Yellowbrow was his disciple who turned against him, stole some of his power, and pretended to be him a couple times (when hes in the yellow robe and ranting like an egomaniac). This was mostly explained by him explicitly in the cutscene after you defeat Yellowbrow. Chapter 1 teaches you to not be greedy; greed can easily ruin everything you built in life. Chapter 2 teaches you to be discerning; good and evil are not only relative but also depend on the point of view. Chapter 3 teaches you to let go of obsession; it drove many good people mad or worse. Chapter 4 teaches you to treasure your time with loved ones; sometimes people cross paths and never meet again. Chapter 5 teaches you to accept that there is often no correct decision; such is life. Chapter 6 give you two choices; to not learn the lessons and repeat the cycle of life's struggles, or rise above it all to achieve enlightenment(or at least carry on with the journey). Actually there's an overarching plot of conspiracy between the taoist deities and buddhas; much of the story references life of Chairman Mao Zedong, but that requires more reading(reading and understanding journal entries can make it a different story) And the whole thing gets a bit like MGS2, where you're set on a destined path to be conditioned into the next wukong(or not) and you're not necessarily with the "good guys".
Interesting. Chapter 1 sorta gave me the obsession thing too. The elder baby head (forgot name at the moment) was obsessed and had to have the last special object that he could never have. So he burnt the place down looking for it or something
the story is a lot less confusing when you learn about journey to the west, this game was definitely made for Chinese and Asian people who grew up with the 1986 tv show
Erlang is kinda corny tbh, has a shield and literally has combo strings that last 20 seconds ffs, once you get his health down the A.I just starts spamming to the point the fight becomes a parody of actual good boss fights. @@MrParis215 There are guides that will help a lot in getting through the tougher parts, and almost every secret boss has skills that will counter the main boss of the stage, while you can skip the optional boss until you've leveled up more. If following those routes the game is much more accessible.
I’m very selective about which games I make a “Complete Guide” Series for. My only other 3 before this was for Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Dark Souls 3 (which was sort of a throwback). In any case, Black Myth Wukong definitely passed the bar and was easily deserving of such a series in my opinion!
I’m currently going into NG++ on Wukong and can’t thank you enough for your videos! They’ve helped me not only get 100% achievements but also appreciate the game so much more
The reason people are confused by the cut scenes and characters is because Game Science originally just intended the game for the Chinese audience, who grew up watching the 1986 version tv show of Journey to the West. It is even more popular and well known to three generals of people than something like Star Wars is to Americans. This is why nothing was explained and even deep cut references are major characters and plot lines in this game. No effort was made for localisation because they didn’t think it was necessary.
2 small details I can pick out that I absolutely love in an amazing game would be that gear changes look as you upgrade it, and the different animation styles used for each of the end chapter scenes. So beautifully done all of them
Dragonball was heavily inspired by the novel Journey to the west, which tells the story of Sun Wukong, Saiyens transforming into monkeys, Son Goku having a tail when he was a young boy etc etc
It’s been 3 weeks, 5 days, and 17 hrs since I last felt sleep. The voices in my head tell me sweet nothings. The shadows look at me with awe. The still air fills me with solemnity. And yet, here I am. For another Joe video.
Yeah, Joe, I know you couldn't breathe at all with that duck mask over that lion mask. Edit: Annnnnnnnd I just skipped to the end to see if there was an outtake and sure enough I was correct.
The baby buddha is the Laughing Buddha (Budai, or Maitreya), the buddha that can see future. He can take any form, in this case a kid (9 years old, to pay tribute to the 9th year of passing of the original actor of the laughing buddha in the 80's Journey To the West TV show). Yellowbrow is Budai's pupil.
For almost all the main bosses, if you go through the hidden optional area, you will get vessels (4 of them in total), which will help you immensely in boss c ombat. For the Rat, you can go and get the wind tamer which will give you Damage Reduction and immunity to Strong Winds so you won't be affected by the Sand Tornado in the 3rd phase. For the Centipede, if you use the weaver's needle at the right time, you can skip the whole stamina reduction phase. To understand the watermelon scene you have to know the original story which a little digging will help.
You also get the fire piece mantle in the first chapter after defeating the greedy monk in the secret area, that helps you immensely against the chapter 1's final boss
You readed my mind man... This game is SOOOOO FREAKING HARD many times, but also sooo beautiful and spectacular! It´s a masterpiece, and it really deserve to be the GOTY!!
Just finished watching the video. I 100% agree on the 9/10 (that was my own rating) and I think you were very on point with all of your criticisms that keep this from being a 10/10. I am equally looking forward to what these developers do next. Definitely a GOTY contender (if not winner) in my opinion!
Yeah at least it didn't reuse bosses like Elden Ring or give you no direction or have only one NPC put a mark on your map the entire game, or make armor useless or have 100's of weapons and most of them garbage, I could go on. ER gets too many passes just because it's a "mer Fromsoft" game it's 7/10 unlike this.
@@The1stDuhZeezIt does reuse several bosses with different color palettes or elemental-themed moves. some ppl complained about it, but its a dumb thing to complain about in Black Myth Wukong and its dumb thing to complain about in Elden Ring, which has 2-3x the number of unique bosses (counted once) and unique enemy types as any other FromSoft game, who are very ahead of the curve on enemy variety, and which Black Myth Wukong roughly matches, but in a much smaller & more linear game space.
@@mediumvillain What are you talking about ? "Elden Ring has 2-3x the number of unique bosses" ??? Compared to the unique bosses in Black Myth, Elden Ring is just a copy-paste, recycle, and lazy reused models sticking together everywhere...There are only 40+ actually unique bosses max...While BMW has like 80+
Just to be clear, I think Elden Ring is a 10/10, and I place Baldur’s Gate 3 at 10/10 as well. Those games are not without flaws, but their strengths far outweigh and hold up the rest to reach 10/10 status. Wukong has 10/10 potential but just has a bit too much invisible wall issues and a significant number of bosses are difficult because of hit box issues rather than fighting mechanics.

actually we already see a lot of chinese lore in western media, it's just they sell it as japanese lore or korean lore. for example: 9 tails fox actually was originally chinese lore, but more popular in western media as japanese and korean lore. there's many more actually.
Well, yeah, China and India are basically the sources of all lore and culture for everything east of Central Asia. It'd be sort of hard to find too much lore that is truly and originally Japanese or Vietnamese, unless it was fairly recent.

Totally agree on everything here. Perfect 9/10 game that would’ve been 10/10 had the invisible walls not been such a huge thing. The art, the lore, the expansive gameplay, the awesome bosses, the level design, everything. There was so much work put into this game. They deserve GOTY

No *_"Yellow Paint"_* (that will treat you like a toddler of what to do or will hand hold you to your exploration) I encountered so far in the game except the yellow sparkling lights whenever you are close to Shrines and that's fine.
I wanted to quit a lot. 4 bosses took me 2 days to beat. I have kids so i could only play an hour or 2 at a time. Beating the bosses gave me so much pleasure. My 6 year old would root me on and then tell me at certain bosses i need to stop fighting him and go back to practicing on the little guys lol
This game should be goty! Although its system is a DS copycat but holy moly it gave you the same dopamine just like any other DS series. Any dev who can copy the essence of DS system properly is a big welcome (yes lop is also great game and not you nioh/broken system soulslike game). Thankfully it's optimized, kudos to the dev for letting me play without any big lag with gtx 1660ti. Some flaws in the game: 1. Invisible wall but you can die because of falling in some places. Weird inconsistencies from game science. 2. The map is huuge in some chapter but without any clues where to go. I could've been lost and got dizzy (esp. chapter 3). Fortunately, its shatter provided us with great walkthrough. So as a souls game lover from the heart, YES AGREED 9/10! what a breath of fresh air for AAA game.
one baby buddha is the buddhavasta or whatever, the other is yellowbrow also the alien who bleeds gold in the cartoon, the monk who was wukongs ally during the journey is the one who comes to yellowbrow. Yellowbrow just mimics him to trick you
Having lived in China for about 15 years, it's good to see that the game is introducing people to a more nuanced and balanced view of this country. We only hear the bad things about China if we switch on the news in the West (and yes, we only hear about the bad things about the West if you switch on the news here) but in fact both cultures are full of rich history and nuance that really makes us feel that we aren't so different after all. If it takes a game to do that, bring on gaming.
For in depth myth and lore explanations I recommend watching AvenueX’s Black Myth Wukong playlist. She goes through the chapters one by one and compares the in game story with the original JTTW and does great breakdowns of naming conventions and other cultural traditions that are easily missed.
I think you guys should get Alex to do tutorial videos on each boss in Souls like games. He would be good at it and help me out tremendously because I suck at souls like !!
Even Chinese can't understand all or know all the lores, it's the hybrid of Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese demons. That baby buddha in the game is Maitreya Buddha.
I didn't mind the invisible walls THAT much.... I mean yeah, it was a bit annoying having such a beautiful looking open world and not being able to explore... but lets face it, we all know it would have otherwise turned into a game where we end up exploring for hours on end, and then thinking "Uuh...... what were we supposed to be doing in this game 3 hours ago?" The ONLY frustrating invisible wall I encountered was in the temple near the end of Chapter 5 after fighting in the monotone arena. I looked over a railing and noticed there was a tiny turtle chest that I hadn't opened. I tried jumping over the railing but it WOULDN'T LET ME! Had to literally walk the entire way around just to get to that freaking little chest.
I don't really agree, because I think there are better ways to do it; steep cliffs, thick forests, deep water, big rocks, all of these can be effective barriers. Sure, yeah, you can always be pedantic and say "Why can't I slip between the trees?" or whatever, but it's more immersive than random barriers for no apparent reason. It also lets devs get lazy, which is what I'd describe your situation as. Similar to having gaps in the invisible wall that lead to secrets. But it's forgivable when everything else is great--hopefully a bigger budget follow-up of some sort will do a better job with level design.
I didn't want to rest and respawn all the enemies before the rock golem fight so I started it with no potions and half health and I found out there's a boulder on the southwest side of the battlefield that you can use to make him keep canceling his attacks. Cheesed the shit out of that boy!
Honestly with the lore, artistry, and detail that went into this game. This is a pretty solid 10 out of 10 for me. The sheer amount of lore in just the enemy portraits, the beautiful artwork slabs at the end of every chapter, the subliminal life lessons, and the insane enemy and boss variety. Chapter three was probably the weakest for me but just about every other chapter I can't even think of a point in the game I was just hoping to get done with. Up there with Elden ring, the Witcher 3, Baldur's gate 3. I'm doing a new game plus run right now because I wanna make sure I platinum this game.

Fantastic review my dudes!
I couldn't agree more about this chapter's 2 final boss! There is in fact a way to make the last third of the fight easier but it is hidden behind a side quest. Literally broke my teeth several times against this boss, went to level up and explore, completed that quest, came back: beaten him 2nd try. Same for the last boss, lost 4h trying to beat it in a fair way, without leveling up, but couldn't. Did some level up, discovered that one ability was really OP for that boss, beaten it 1st try afterwards. So for those getting stuck at any point, do not get too stubborn: explore, re-visit some areas, upgrade some abilities, and you'll be fine.

Beautifully summarized
Interesting. Chapter 1 sorta gave me the obsession thing too. The elder baby head (forgot name at the moment) was obsessed and had to have the last special object that he could never have. So he burnt the place down looking for it or something

@@MrParis215 There are guides that will help a lot in getting through the tougher parts, and almost every secret boss has skills that will counter the main boss of the stage, while you can skip the optional boss until you've leveled up more. I’m very selective about which games I make a “Complete Guide” Series for. My only other 3 before this was for Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Dark Souls 3 (which was sort of a throwback).

If you read all the journal entries, I think they provide enough context.

You readed my mind man... This game is SOOOOO FREAKING HARD many times, but also sooo beautiful and spectacular! It´s a masterpiece, and it really deserve to be the GOTY!!
You know why characters in DB have so many forms? Journey to the west did it first. Its the "can Goku defeat this character" of its time
If you read the books the chapters even end with lines like “how will monkey defeat this new threat, find out in the next chapter!”

Some flaws in the game:
1. Invisible wall but you can die because of falling in some places. Weird inconsistencies from game science.
2. The map is huuge in some chapter but without any clues where to go. I could've been lost and got dizzy (esp. chapter 3). Fortunately, its shatter provided us with great walkthrough.

I love Chinese history and culture. I hate practically every government.

Even Chinese can't understand all or know all the lores, it's the hybrid of Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese demons. That baby buddha in the game is Maitreya Buddha.
Do dragons have asses or just a magic hole? This is now my favorite quote.
I didn't mind the invisible walls THAT much.... I mean yeah, it was a bit annoying having such a beautiful looking open world and not being able to explore... but lets face it, we all know it would have otherwise turned into a game where we end up exploring for hours on end, and then thinking "Uuh...... what were we supposed to be doing in this game 3 hours ago?"
The ONLY frustrating invisible wall I encountered was in the temple near the end of Chapter 5 after fighting in the monotone arena.
When you needed help, you called Alex to come back from vacation early to defeat a boss. lol
I didn't want to rest and respawn all the enemies before the rock golem fight so I started it with no potions and half health and I found out there's a boulder on the southwest side of the battlefield that you can use to make him keep canceling his attacks. Cheesed the shit out of that boy!
There's also another rock boss that you can spawn in that area and you can use that one to fight the rock golem.
