7:35 Just a heads up, you need to put exactly 1 filter item in each of the last 4 slots if you want it to be overflow proof. If you don't, the hopper can get backed up with too many items, the comparator will give a signal strength >3, which is strong enough to trigger nearby filters to start dumping their items, which will break the sorting system. If all the items are just coming from a single hopper/dropper stream, it'll be fine until all the chests are completely, but if you were to throw in more than 28 gold all at once directly into the water stream, it would completely break the diamond and emerald filters.
Would this be a similar issue if using a hopper line as things would come in as fast as going out? Or is it only if you drop large numbers of items in at once? Like if the dropper inputs items faster than a hopper intake? For rarer items that I don't want to have 41 items sitting in the hopper for (like diamonds, or extra heavy cores is all i can think of right now) could you just have 1 in the hopper and rely on their intake speeds to match up?
@@N0FoxGiven tldr: You should be fine with just one item as long as you aren't dumping truckloads of the same item all at once and completely filling up your storage. Long version: It's not an issue as long as A) The filtering hopper can always keep up with the number of items going in (i.e. you're never getting more than 2.5 of that item type per second for a prolonged time, and never put a stack of items all at once directly into the filtering hopper), and B) Your storage never gets filled up. As long as you're putting your items into a single auto-dropper like in the video, and not dumping them into the water stream yourself, you don't have to worry about A. And since you're talking about rarer items, it shouldn't be hard to prevent your storage from filling up completely, so you should be good with B too.

From what I've done so far, this is an amazing item sorter. It can be as big as needed and made into multiple levels, all on the same system. Fantastic work.

It's a lucky coincidence that the dropper spit things out randomly. Proves it won't break if it's connected to something that goes totally random like a wool farm for instance
To prevent the system from breaking in case of an overflow? I would honestly put 4x1 filter filler items and the rest the sorted item. Can’t break it with an overflow.
It's a balancing act it sounds like from other comments I've seen. Having more materials in the filter vs over flow prevention. I'm rather asking the same thing. If the feed rate is enough to feed items through so I don't have to put 41 diamonds into a fricken filter. Or if I could rely on 1. Or if for rarer materials you give a bridge space so you don't over flow to nearby cells.
Omg! I’ve managed to to an incorporate my mob farm into this so as I’m sitting afk my mob farm connects to my sorter and o never have to arrange my items again from it!! I’ve got an iron farm which I plan to incorporate into it too!!! Sooooo good thank you so much!!!
Just hooked it up to my castle tower witch is Aldo a iron farm but at night spawns mobs 😅 it's amazing lol imma add a roof to make it a iron/ mob grinder

Why not put in 11 filter items so you only need 1 true item and you don't need 5 diamonds to sit there for sorting. Edit: this got answered. TL:DR, you have a chance of having enough items in the hopper to create a stronger signal bleeding to the hoppers next to it. If you have a mobfarm direct input or something pushing large amounts of items through. It is better to have the singular items or fewer as filter items as it keeps the signal low and prevents damaging/ removing the filter items from the hoppers and breaking filtering in that section causing a gradual over flow. Though with systems like stated that are throwing a stack or more through. Make sure to have more spaces/hoppers/chests along the line for those items to go or not all of them will be collected. Fun tip: there is no reason on renewable resource farms you can't set this system up with a single item and 4 named items and let the farm populate the filters for you. Doing this on a tree farm, iron farm, and several mob farms in the near future.
Is it possible to put different blocks in a single row, for example can you put cobblestone and deep slate in one and have like diamonds, iron, and coal in another? Or do you just have to make one row per every item?? Thanks!! Love the vids keep up the work

@@tripppierce13 Actually it will break if it overflows. If the hopper has more than 64+4 items in it, it will break any filters next to it. If you only put one filter item in each slot then it'll be overflow proof so luckily it's an easy fix.
@raizo17x3 so I was having the same problem and apparently the water flow just wasn't high enough? I put a packed ice with a button right by the first hopper and a new water source, it seems to only work for me in streams of three
Been using your original sorter with some tweaks. Why sections of 3 vs sections of 5? Love that i don't need soul sand or cakes etc anymore though. Much easier to build this in a new world without having to go to the nether or ancient city for the sand.
Ok I built this and did 5 sections and it works. May need to add a button on the very first section of packed ice. Other than that I have mine running perfectly and also have it set up in a U shape. Use 4 packed ice and a button to make the bend.

just built this with my xp farm/skele grinder, and i keep having items get stuck on the packed ice before reaching my misc. chests. any ideas? built it exactly as shown here
I believe you could, just have to get creative. If it doesn’t flow right around corners you could just have it end on a hopper, hoppers wrap around the corner, and feed a dropper that spits it into the next stream
I have a problem with one I made one in a iron farm/ sugar cane /mobfarm and works perfectly but then i made mone in my guargian farm and the first chest work but on the second one all items go down the chest even the named blocks... ive tried re building and everything but all items keep going down Weird thing is that on the next rows of chests everything is perfect and filters correctley
Empty out the broken filters and any filters next to them, then refill them but make sure there's only one item in each slot (1 "good" item then 4 "filter" items total). I'm guessing what happened is that your guardian farm produced more items than the filter can handle, so it "overflowed" and broke nearby filters. Using only one filter item in each slot will make it overflow proof.
My only issue is that the empty chests on the bottom don't get filled from the items in the chests above so I have to access the top chests to get all the items.

It’s cause the two observers are constantly ticking back and forth, I believe you can use a comparator to register if there are any items in the dispenser… that should then be able to provide power out of the comparator into a sticky piston… when that piston extends it pushes an observer into place to power the dispenser just like in the video but maybe oriented differently, should then be powering the dispenser but only when there are items in it. I know there used to be videos of how to do it but maybe the red stones changed since then… I’m trying to make my own version of this build atm but it doesn’t seem to be working how I want.
@@paulcurtis7516 you CAN stop the ticking… by doing a little bit more. Just need a lever, comparator, red stone and sticky piston. Also helps with lag cause it’s not constantly running… you can go ahead and do it your way… and I’ll explain how it can be done to the person that actually asked. Have a good day
Works amazingly for me make sure you got 10 of the items that your sorting and the filter items also check you’re red stone the comparators should be glowing when it works
It has to do with the strength of the redstone signal measured by the comparator. The signal given off by the item you want to sort + filler items is one item less than is required to unlock the hopper, that way when the item it is sorting drops in, the signal strength is strong enough that it powers the redstone torch (turning it off and unlocking the hopper) and then once it moves one item down it once again gives off too weak of power and the hopper is locked again.
@Playfast12 this sorting system can can help with all stackable items like emeralds, witch drops, etc. But a lot of your drops are non-stackable (weapons, totems, potions, saddles, that kind of thing). There's a reason why you don't see UA-camrs typically hook up a sorting system to these, just lots of chests. Best advice I can give you is to mirror the design for the input via chests and hoppers from your killing floor, create a sorting slot for each of your stackable items, and put in a ton of over flow for your single items and empty bottles (which only stack to 16 and will break this sorter because it screws with the comparator signal strength)
@daveconner224 you'd have to dig to see what the sorter would need to look like for junk items. I can't say yes or no but probably asking for trouble having two different types sitting together. The comparator outputs based on stack fullness not total item count. I've screwed these up in the past with 64 stack filters (I had the wrong ratios of item vs junk) and linked comparator outputs where one would unlock the one beside it. It would probably happen too easily with a 64 next to a 16. If you were going to do it I'd have a dedicated area with 16 item filters spaced at least one block away from your 64s in your storage building. But even then unless you have an enderman farm you won't get these in a big enough quantity to worry about throwing into an automatic sorter imo, and if you did have an enderman farm your probably best just bringing back a couple of stacks and going manual anyway.

figured it out, it has to be a 4 wide chest with packed ice beginning a new flow each set of four to get enough speed to pass

Why do you use extra filler items?
