How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyrobin.com The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website

BEAUTIFUL‼ Way back in the time before dinosaurs (1972), I took one of my Mom's empty, wooden spools of thread and put 6 smalls in the top. I then made my own iord out of cotton string from the hardware store. I made reins for my horse. I still have those reins‼🐎

I like to run a piece of rope through the middle so the I-cord is stitched around the rope and then when I have a good long length of it I coil it up and sew it together to make baskets to hold all sorts of things.
Could you use this technique to make handles for a tote?
@@MaryAnnMakes you totally can, I've done it a couple of times. It works great, you just have to make sure that you catch the end of the rope in your stitches when you are sewing the handles to the tote so that the yarn doesn't stretch out and leave a gap between the rope inside and the end of the handle.

as a child my parents took a wooden spool and small nails and made this for me , you use a crochet hook to flip the yarn . i made these for my grand girls and their friends, the
y had a blast. we called it rope crochet. so fun

I love this tool as well. It's so fun. They need to make one for chunky yarn
I know it's not exactly the same,speed,& difficulty wise,but if ur feeling adventurous u can do like me & just make a t.p.roll loom,or use a reg./lg.guage, round or long,knitting loom if u have 1,& using only 3-6 pegs(4 is pretty good 4 chunky,imo-u can find yt videos on how 2 use any of those I mentioned)..I use these things to make chunky yarn,cuz I can't afford 2 get that much of it at a time,but have tons of worsted weight & finer that was a bargain!

I have used an i-cord machine before and all I've done with it is make an i-cord to weave through a cowl I crocheted. I'll give the leftover fingering weight yarn i-cord making a try and figure something out to make with the finished cords. Fun video!

Never heard of a knitting mill but once I saw it in action, it reminded me of the wooden spool painted like a doll that I had when I was little. Would never of thought to crochet with the cord. Thank you so much for having the patience & creativity to try this idea & make a video of it...Am so thrilled that I've finally found this video & know that someone else thought it'd be a neat idea 2 use icord 2 make a blanket(or lucet was originally what I thought about using 1st,but later when i made a t.p.roll loom decided i cord would prob.be more stretchy),cuz I've been wondering about this...I haven't been doing yarn craft very long,only a couple months.I started learning everything I could about finger/hand knitting,when I saw someone make a chunky(jumbo #7) chenille yarn blanket by hand(& the next video was 1 made w/a huge crochet hook),& decided it looked so cool,rewarding/fun,& easy enuf 4 me 2 try..Of course I had no idea how much yarn actually costs,& got so disappointed from sticker shock,when I found out it would likely cost no less than $120 to make 1 like I wanted...I was still interested in yarn crafts tho & kept finding yt videos & articles,& watching tutorials to learn the hows & whys,& when I saw a lucet fork & cord making/braiding,I started 2 wonder if i could take a bunch of cheaper yarn I got on sale & make it into cordage,then maybe that could replace the expensive chunky #5 & #6 yarns & although it'd be a lot of work,I'd have help since my little nephews have been learning to use the t.p.knitters we made 2 & we could all make & put our i cords together...I kept learning about other things too,like embroidery,crochet,knitting,spinning/making yarn & loom knitting,& started building up supplies for over a yr.b4 I finally just made myself jump into it 2mo.ago..Now I am(we are I should say) ready 2 make whatever we can dream up,lol😂!!!

I got this for kindergarten work. It was very cute as mother day gift, my children made for themselves and put some Felt- flower in the middle of the cord. Love your I- cord. Prym is situated in Germany and a very good quality company!

@@HookedbyRobin Most welcome. For those out there who handspin, I use wire fox terrier undercoat (resembles bunny fur) to handspin yarn then knit/crochet/weave blankets or crate pads. The terrier outer coat makes nice leashes.

Absolutely fabulous. Have you ever tried the manual one? Instead of cranking you turn the unit and you use a tool where you lift one loop over the other then turn to next peg and repeat . A weight would be good. But I've never had a manual one come with a weight.
Thank you for this lesson on the Prym Knitter. I am viewing this tutorial on 08/21/2022. The fact that the clear plastic top does not come off is a bit cumbersome. Good to have choices in knitting machines, like looms.

Cool machine. When i was a kid, Im 64 now, i had corking machine. It was plastic with 4 prongs sticking up and i did the same as your machine but by hand. Cant remember what i did with it. Thanks for sharing. Xo

My i-cord maker came with a weighted peg, which has broken. I have found that I can use table cloth weights quite successfully. They clip on well, even to the first thread, and I can move them up the i-cord with no issues.

If you make a slip knot that is adjustable it won't fall off the hook of your weight. Use same knot that you use when crocheting.
Do you know if it is possible to make the stitches live again after you disengage?

I have been looking for a better method to make those gorgeous 'arm knit' blankets that have been all the rage - but i know that giant roving yarn is not practical and will only fall apart in the end. This looks like a great solution.

I used the fishermans knot (magic knot) to join yarn pieces and it didn't effect the mill - I just went fractionally slower until the knot was knitted into the cord 👍
What is the thinnest woll or can it be used with hand sewing(Maschine) thread too 🤔
I'm struggling to use mine, after the first 4 hooks to get it started, the yarn only flips over one of the needles and doesn't carry on flipping over each needle it just goes around them. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.
The yarn can be tied to the weight instead of using a bulldog clip.

Thread the end through the stitches and pull tight, hide the end inside the cord using a wool sewing needle

Ah ok, so I didn't cover that in my video because my joins aren't 100% perfect BUT how I did it was to grab a needle and sew the ends together. I sewed the end of my new piece through the 4 loops of the old end and then sort of sewed up and around.
Not very neat but you don't notice once you have crocheted it up :-)
If I can find a truly neat solution I will do a video 🙂👍 x

Thank you for video. I have also treated myself to this Icord machine and the speed is wonderful BUT I am having trouble with the icord below the weight curling back on to itself. Any suggestions on why and what I should be doing differently.
Mine did the same - it drove me potty 😅 I rolled up the excess into a ball and popped a rubber band around it to keep it in shape so it could spin around freely underneath as I cranked out more icord. I hope that helps!

Just use a needle to thread through all the stitches. I add a couple of sewing stitches to make sure it won't unravel then hide the end inside the cord. Forgive the 'm' at the end of this message! My delete button is not working! m
Can you use for handles for totes?
Hmm it is quite stretchy so I'm not sure it would be strong enough for handles - perhaps if you used something stiffer like mercerised cotton it could work?
How do you attach new colours?
I tie the yarns together using a fishermans knot and then feed them through the machine as normal (and for joining the icord pieces, I sew them together 👍)
