Yo! That pressure plate thing sounds like a hitbox assignment feature. I bet it works in a way where every body part of a character is given a tag that is also shared by other characters. I bet they use it when assigning hitboxes. I bet dark samus is a special case where her foot tag is not in a posistion where it can touch the pressure plate, so they assigned it the default y axis of her model. And for ROB, I believe where his wire connects to his base extends a bit lower than his base so due to that I believe the pressure plate was coded to get the lowest point of that foot tag and trigger on that point touching it, with a bit of padding.
Seems like with the pressure plate, it's where the "foot" bones are, with the specific exception of perpetually floating characters like mewtwo and dark spamus. and ROB's foot bones are probably where the what i'm going to call back wheels (idk what it is) are.
A lot of pressure plate shenanigans are probably because Smash is 3d, and it's hitboxes actually reflect that. I think the thing with Rob happens because his rear platform dips a bit lower than the rest of his body, and the thing with Dark Samus is probably because in some situations Smash can be a bit spaghetti-coded.

Hi pkbeats i'm a BIG fan of your videos i rewatch them WAY to many times your one of my if not favorite favorite smash bros fact channels(whatever you call those) ever

3:17 Ridley main here, this isn't accurate/practical as Ridley's Side B is very easy to DI up and most opponents live up until 130-140% Also, Ridley's Space Pirate Rush is just not really a good move, even for a command grab. Compared to other command grabs. It comes out at frame 22 and again, there are *much* more powerful command grabs. Bowser's starts at frame 6, Incineroar's starts at 16 and both can kill considerably earlier. Bowser can use platforms and it kills off the top, and incineroar's correct timing one just kills way earlier, not including revenge and incin's lasts longer. Ridley's command grab if it whiffs has a hefty 44 frames of lag. Bowser has slightly more, but his comes out way faster. ALSO, unlike the vast majority of command grabs, you can actually mash out of Ridley's and deny him of a fairly hard to land move and damage, and it becomes easier to mash if the percent difference between ridley and the opponent are high.

There will probably be some nay sayers but with the tools and kit Ridley has you'd be surprised at how well he does to shut down a lot of Steve's stuff, blocks indirectly buffing him and also being destroyed easilly and safely, nair making minecart non existent and Steve can't hit ledgehang with lava. There is also the situations where if the Steve tries placing blocks offstage and near ledge to stop a recovery with side b or so he can stand out there and use a move there are times where this will lead to the Steve getting wall slammed against the stage wall itself and can send them at a nasty angle killing them, it also looks extremely janky animation wise. Now this isn't saying he wins, if anything it just feels really even, there's nothing Steve does that can be considered janky or cheesy on Ridley that a lot of the cast can do to Ridley and way worse. Just comes down to being outplayed in this mu. My favourite use of the Side b is when Steve is making a wall to mine by the edge of the stage, Steve's unaware of this will do their standard strategy of hold shield and punish if someone tries to jump over the wall. What I do is jump over and use the multi jumps to hover over to ledge and then proceed to side b them into their own wall, since they've made the same condition that was shown in the video. I beat a guy using Steve online with ganondorf once and I had never used ganondorf before then, the sword went through the blocks and he didn't expect it
7:50 i think it's because ROB is slightly elevated by his wheels, which act as his 'feet and actually touch the plate. When approaching from front he just hovers over the plate. But when you taunt, his back wheel rolls over and triggers the plate
8:48 Dark Samus sets off the plate at the center of mass because it flies by exerting force directly below it, causing it to hover off the ground. 6:18 I guess rob just has a lot of weight where his cord connects to his base? the only thing i can thing of is that it's really hard for a hovercraft to set off land mines, but a hovercraft's weight is distributed evenly... strange...
Fun fact I just learned: if you use sephiroth's f-air in the gap created by breaking the ground on green hill as the floor pops back in, you will hear an attack sound, you will hear a sephiroth damage sound, and get knocked out of the pit, but take zero damage
I think he reason R.O.B. doesn't trigger the pressure plate when approaching forwards a bit is due to R.O.B. hovering slightly except on the back. R.O.B. has a little protrusion on the back of it's model that raises the entire "foot" up off the ground. So it doesn't trigger until that protrusion touches the pressure plate. It's like high heels except it's only the heel so the rest of the "foot" doesn't properly land on the pressure plate.
Idk if you’ve covered this already, but Captain Falcons Dtaunt changes depending on which way he’s facing. If he faces the camera (left), he holds his entire hand out, with all 5 fingers outstretched. But if he faces away from the camera (right) he only holds 3 fingers up, in a kind of finger gun formation. One of the most useless facts I know about smash
Hey PK! Where did you go to see the totality? My Dad and I took a trip to Kingston Ontario to catch it (this was the second one we've caught together).
ROB kinda appears to have the two "nubs" in front and a larger "square" in back with most of his base being elevated. This would be what's interacting with the pressure plate, and that giant ROB's gap between, shall we say, "toes" and "heel" is large enough that yes it passes around the pressure plate in the z-axis, failing to trigger it.
perhaps the pressure plate thing has more to do with a character's ECB or collision box, rather than anything else. it really just makes the most sense, i'm sure there's visualizations modders have put out there or something
Didn't they ban Steve in most competitive play? Or was that just being discussed for a while and decided against it? Because if they did, it kinda ironically turned out that this alternate move is STILL not in competitive play 😂
After doing some testing myself, I suspect that the pressure plate is getting set off by the same logic as their environmental collision. Donkey kong's fists not touching the plate is likely the reason why he sets it off so late, as the hitboxes in this game exist in a three-dimensional space even if you can only move in two of the dimensions. Additionally, upon close observation, it seemed Rob's _elbows_ are what stops him from phasing into a wall (best seen with the forward lean done when transitioning from slow walking to running, as well as uptaunt bumping him away when his elbows would phase into the wall). His baseplate, on the other hand, seems to only matter when touching a ledge that connects to a wall while airborne -- and even then just the front side. If you drift backwards into the wall, you can phase partially into it, up to the point where -- you guessed it -- his elbows touch the wall. Interestingly, this is farther than you can go before setting off the pressure plate. Jumping doesn't push you out, unless you double jump because he does a spin there and it causes his elbows to touch the wall. The rest of this is just pure speculation, but I think the front part of his collision extends while airborne to make ledge grabbing more consistent (because otherwise it would be very easy to drift past the edge), but is too high up to trigger the pressure plate when landing. When grounded, then, the front side lacks collision so that he doesn't fall off of any ledges too soon (I neglected to mention this earlier, but the point at which he activates the pressure plate is roughly the same as the closest he can be to the ledge without falling). Why the back end of his base plate triggers it from so far away is anyone's guess. I've spent far too long on this already someone smarter than me go figure out the rest.
With the pressure plate rob one, the rob amiibo is slightly lifted off the amiibo base, even though the mario series princesses take up the base, so maybe rob is floating

i almost choked on a french fry when that image of DK appeared for the second time
I beat a guy using Steve online with ganondorf once and I had never used ganondorf before then, the sword went through the blocks and he didn't expect it
Try to activate the pressure plate with zss/snake while crouching backwards, that would be interesting as well.
7:50 i think it's because ROB is slightly elevated by his wheels, which act as his 'feet and actually touch the plate. When approaching from front he just hovers over the plate. But when you taunt, his back wheel rolls over and triggers the plate
When the world needed him most...
Ridley is a Steve counter confirmed.
They really need to buff Steve this is unfair
For the pressure plate, what about Bowser Jr?
“Like Halloween candy and fentanyl” had me on the floor
I think he reason R.O.B. doesn't trigger the pressure plate when approaching forwards a bit is due to R.O.B. hovering slightly except on the back. R.O.B. has a little protrusion on the back of it's model that raises the entire "foot" up off the ground. So it doesn't trigger until that protrusion touches the pressure plate. It's like high heels except it's only the heel so the rest of the "foot" doesn't properly land on the pressure plate.
I call that part of R.O.B. his foot but I might start calling it his hoof.
If you think that Ridley tech is cool, just wait til you see what Steve can do to Ridley lmao
I remember him saying that in an older video, and as far as I know,I think it's pretty well known
sick video man
Hey PK! Where did you go to see the totality? My Dad and I took a trip to Kingston Ontario to catch it (this was the second one we've caught together).
I’ve played this game for so many hours and NEVER have I EVER knew about this animation, wtf
Miss ya PK! Any day you pop up on my notifications is a good day 😊
This might be a second comment from me, might be the first, I posted the first one but cant see it anymore, but anyway, glad to have ya back, man
Day and night? You mean ecli-oh he pointed it out as a cheeky segway. Nice pics
perhaps the pressure plate thing has more to do with a character's ECB or collision box, rather than anything else. it really just makes the most sense, i'm sure there's visualizations modders have put out there or something
what about bowser junior and the pressure plate
probably one of the few people that knew about the ridley tech beforehand lol have a friend who played ridley and i died super early on a custom stage
I wonder if taunts where you lift off the ground would activate the pressure plate? For example Ganondorf's spinning taunt
Dunno if it's called elsewhere, but in these part of the woods, a Juicy Lucy is a cheese-stuffed burger.
“To some demographics, hotter”
It’s me, I’m demographics
Didn't they ban Steve in most competitive play? Or was that just being discussed for a while and decided against it? Because if they did, it kinda ironically turned out that this alternate move is STILL not in competitive play 😂
Lucina's going to HATE the name of this tech.
I think the pressure plate might be set off by the character's bounding box. That thing is contantly changing size.
Rob's fckn power cord *clips* through his torso when he does his spin taunt
shit game
With the pressure plate rob one, the rob amiibo is slightly lifted off the amiibo base, even though the mario series princesses take up the base, so maybe rob is floating
happy to see you post
