  • German Short Rows are one of our favorite methods for working partial rows to add shaping and dimension to your knitted fabric. In this Brooklyn Tweed knitting tutorial, we show you how to work German Short Rows for sock heels, bust darts, to raise the back neckline of a sweater for a better fit, to create a high-low hem, or wherever else you can imagine!
    Slip & Pull (S&P):
    0:38 Work the number of stitches indicated in your pattern for your first short row, then turn your work.
    1:13 Slip & pull (S&P) purl side facing: Slip the first stitch on the L needle purlwise with yarn in front. Pull the yarn tightly up and over the R needle so that the two legs of the stitch in the row below are pulled up and exposed.
    1:37 Hold tension on the yarn while working the next stitch to keep the pulled-up stitch in this position.
    1:48 Bring your yarn up and around your R needle to the front again (as if creating a yarn over), pulling tightly. Continue as directed in pattern.
    2:43 Slip & pull (S&P) knit side facing: Bring your yarn to the front. Slip the first stitch on the L needle purlwise. Pull the yarn tightly up and over the R needle so that the two legs of the stitch in the row below are pulled up and exposed. Continue as directed in pattern.
    5:13 Resolve your Short Rows:
    5:38 (Knit side facing): When you reach the two loops of your slip & pulled stitch, knit the two loops together, pulling your yarn tightly.
    7:05 (Purl side facing): When you reach the two loops of your slip & pulled stitch, purl the two loops together, pulling your yarn tightly.

    This is the best tutorial I've ever seen on the subject. There's only one area that I can't comprehend. I don't understand why you bring the yarn to make 2 legs only to knit or purl it as one stitch anyway

    • @BrooklynTweed_Official
      @BrooklynTweed_Official  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you, Donna! Pulling the stitch up & over the needle pulls the end of the row up, effectively making the row shorter at your turning point, so that there's not a one-stitch-tall gap as there would be if you simply turned and knit back at the end of your short row. TECHknitter has an excellent post on various short row methods here: techknitting.blogspot.com/2009/10/short-rows-method.html (German short rows would fall somewhere under variation 4 or 5)

Your explanation made it easy to understand,other videos I've watched had me thinking I either just slip the stitch or knit it with no double stitch thingy~I never knew which to do so it was always just a random guess with both choices being incorrect~!! When you turn, hold the yarn in front and slip the first stitch off from the right needle to the left, and then pull the yarn up and over. Ta da. If you are purling, bring that taut yarn to the front and keep purling the row. If you are knitting, keep the taut yarn in back and keep knitting.

    Excellent tutorial! Thank you. Can you explain how to do GSR if you are doing 1X1 rib? Do you do it exactly the same- considering which side of your garment you are working on OR do you do the steps according to whether you are working on a knit or a purl stitch. I have a cowl collar that I am working on with 1X1 twisted rib and no matter what I do it does not look good when I pick up the short row stitches. Thanks

    • @BrooklynTweed_Official
      @BrooklynTweed_Official  7 місяців тому

      Thanks so much! Great question - GSR is a good choice for 1x1 ribbing. You'll work your slip & pulls the same way after you turn - if the yarn is already in front, go ahead and S&P, if it's in back, bring it to the front and work your S&P. When resolving your short rows, work your stitches in pattern. Here's a tutorial by Laura Peterson that you might find helpful to visualize how it looks in 1x1 ribbing: ua-cam.com/video/uColOXXyVKI/v-deo.html

    Thank you for demonstrating the GSR. I have two questions.
    1. Does anything change when you use the continental style of knitting as opposed to the English style. I am finding it a little difficult as I use the continental style
    2. At 2:43 in the video when you demonstrate the GSR moving from the purl to the knit side you don't actually do a "yarn over" as you did at the beginning......or am I missing something.
    Im a late learner so please forgive my silly questions

      @BrooklynTweed_Official  2 роки тому

      Hi Sharon! Thanks for watching!
      Continental may be a little more fiddly when you're pulling your stitch up and over since you'll have your working yarn in your other hand, but you can use your right hand to help keep the pulled-up stitch secured on your needle until you make your next stitch.
      There's not actually a yarn over happening, you're just pulling the stitch up and over the needle (if you did this more loosely, it would be a yarn over, but you're pulling up all the slack).
      There are no silly questions - we're here to help!

    German Short Rows

    I'm just starting out in knitting - when and why are German short rows used? Thanks.

      Christina Apostolopoulos I use short rows for shoulder seams and when I’m working a curved neckline.

      Exactly! Anywhere you need to add shaping / extra fabric in just one area of your knitting.

    I am new to German short rows. I learned the Wrap and Turn method earlier this year, but the GSR method has me stumped. Is the purling part of your pattern or is it because of the short rows?

    • @BrooklynTweed_Official
      @BrooklynTweed_Official  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Nathalie! The purling is to stay in stockinette stitch - knitting on the right side, purling on the wrong side. You can work German short rows with any sort of pattern stitch. Try practicing on a swatch with two different color yarns, as we've done here - it will be easier to see the slip & pull stitches. Happy knitting!

    I'm trying out a v-neck slipover pattern which tells me to do short rows for shoulder shaping. What's the purpose of using short row when it's all going to be the same colour? Is it to help with shaping?

    • @BrooklynTweed_Official
      @BrooklynTweed_Official  3 роки тому

      Hi Nicole! Yes, we just did our short rows in a different color here to make them easier to see, usually you'd be working them in the same color to add shaping in a certain area of your garment. Happy knitting!

    At 4:41 your verbal instructions are to “bring it up and over” but at 4:42 your fingers undo that action. I assume I should ignore the verbal instructions at 4:41?

      @BrooklynTweed_Official  2 роки тому

      Hi Betz! Great question - Jared brings the yarn up and over, takes it back down to readjust, and then brings it up and over again at 4:43 (it's pretty quick the second time, so easy to miss). You'll always want to bring your yarn up and over when working the slip & pull. Thanks for watching!

    I'm trying to do my first sweater and it incorporates German Short Rows into it right after the I-cord cast-on method and seeing as I hadn't done either of those things it was slow going! I have a tendency to pick patterns that are a big challenge (to me) as starters or else my brain gets bored. I apparently can't "just make a washcloth"! I am having trouble with the German Short Rows, however. This tutorial helped me understand what they were and how they were made and what their function is, beautifully. I'm (attempting) making the Sorrel Summer shirt with Loops and Threads woolike yarn. If anyone has any tips, it'd be grand :)

    Thank you so much for this clear & concise tutorial. I knit Icelandic jumpers and the crew neck versions always migrate to the front of the neck due to being knitted in the round. I tried the wrap and turn shaping but was always left with small holes I needed to fix later. These German short rows are PERFECT - raised-up back necks and NO HOLES..!

I can now knit the 3 sweaters I have had waiting on the shelf while I worked up the patience & courage to learn how this is done. My swatch came out perfectly. I appreciate your explanation on how to sub gsr for w&t in my pattern. I’m excited! 🌿🦋
