    really interesting to see the differences between the new OM-1 and my [or any other] E-M1 Mkii. Mine can do most things that the OM-1 can, apart from the face/eye detect feature which I have to manually switch on or off in the SCP. The focus point set with small increment adjustment is easy on mine because I have the focus point settings activated with the left pad button and when set to the smallest point and shooting, a press to the left activates the grid and the point is then navigated by the control pad. The Mkii doesn’t have a joystick option for those that didn’t know.
    While the grid and focus point is active [green] a long press of the OK button brings it back to the centre point or whatever point has been otherwise pre-set as the home point.

      I used to toggle between the HP and Center with a single click. I would set the HP to the upper right third when I was taking pictures of my dog. That way it framed roughly the way I wanted. Then when I wanted Center, I just toggled back to it.

      @@RobTrek I did a test last night of all the video settings. I found that all the 1080 modes were significantly less detailed than the 1080 on my GH5 and Lumix G9. The 4K footage in all the H264 modes are also less detailed. The 4K24 in H265 is more detailed than the GH5/G9, but the 4K60 in H265 is again, significantly softer.
      Have you noticed this as well? I was hoping that the OM-1 would be the GH5 we all wanted. 4K60 in 10 bit with good autofocus in video. But from my findings, the 4K60 in the highest quality is noticeably worse than the 4K24 in the highest quality.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 роки тому

      @@hokkanlo849 Unfortunately, I don't own any m4/3 Panasonic cameras to compare. I have the Panasonic S5 which is awesome and definitely better than the OM-1 for video. I'm not surprised the GH5/G9 are better than the OM-1 for video. That said, I found the quality more than adequate for the work that I do. In fact, the OM-1 has replaced my S5 for my paid work. I can only assume the bitrate on the Panasonics is much higher, hence will give sharper results on anything moving. Most of my work is doing property videos where I pan very slowly.

    • @hokkanlo849
      @hokkanlo849 2 роки тому

      @@RobTrek the 4K24 H265 bitrate is quite low, only 77Mb/s, but the image is more detailed than even the G9's 10 bit 4K24 at 150Mb/s.
      It is so hard to determine how detailed the image will be with only the spec sheet alone.
      Before I got the OM-1, I just saw the specs 4K60, 10 bit, and that alone meant it would be superior to the G9/GH5's 4K60, 8 bit. I didn't think there would be such a noticeable image quality difference between the 4K60 footage of these cameras.
      Likewise, the bitrate doesn't tell me much either. I would expect the 77Mb/s 4K24 H265 10 bit from the OM-1 to be much worse than the 150Mb/s 4K24 10 bit from the G9, but it was surprisingly even better.

    Rob, Great as always. Is there any way to use the half-shutter and AEL/AFL trick if I'm already using back-button focusing? I guess I could set up a custom mode, but don't want to waste the limited options on the OM-5 for that. Thanks

  • @peterbudd1803
    @peterbudd1803 2 роки тому +1

    Thanks Rob - I never realised that about the focus point moving in jumps, it was always very annoying. Sorted now.
    Here is a question for you. If in A or S mode and you have the single focus point selected ( the normal one that jumps when moving it ) and you have Face Detection on. If you then use spot metering the camera turns off Face detection and you cannot turn it on while spot metering is selected. However, if you use the custom single point focus that does not jump three places as in your video then Face Detection remains on when you select spot metering. That seems very odd to me.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 роки тому +1

      Wow! Good catch. Actually, I think it makes sense. Since the custom mode can be set to any size, face detect is not disabled and spot metering is fixed to the center area. So even if you make C1 a single point, the camera will treat it like a cross point or larger. I'll have to make a video about this because spot metering is usually tied to a single point and if people follow my instructions in this video they might not be metering the way they want.

    Thanks for another interesting and helpful video. Quick question re the segment dealing with using the shutter release button and the bbf button to differentiate where the camera focused when one has face detection on. Is it the case that you have to disable the half press of the shutter button to acquire focus or not? My thoughts being that if not immediately you had used bbf to acquire focus and used the shutter button to take the picture, the camera would refocus on whatever the focus point was looking at? Thanks.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 роки тому +1

      If you're holding the AF-On button down, the half press shutter will not make the camera refocus.

    Hey Rob. I have a question not related to your video. From time to time when in playback mode (where you take a look at the pictures taken), the camera (OM_1) keeps going away from this function every time I make the slightest move of the camera og tilt it. There is no consistency in it, but it is pretty annoying that I have to keep going back in playback mode because it jumps away. Do you know how to deal with this problem? 🙄

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 роки тому

      That is odd. The only thing that would make it jump away is touching the shutter button. I can't think of anything that would cause this so I don't really have a solution.

    Hi Rob, thanks for your always useful and interesting videos... I wanted to ask you something: why when I choose the focus box (I always choose the "small" one which includes 9 single points, 3x3) when then during the recovery I press the shutter button halfway and the focus takes place ... only one (or sometimes more than one) of the 9 small dots inside the "small" frame lights up in green but the external perimeter of the frame " small" doesn't light up green as well but stays gray and faded instead? I remember that in my previous E-M1 mk3 that same box glowed green in its perimeter and not just in the small dots inside it. This thing bothers me a lot because my vision is no longer that of youth and I would always like to see the "small" box light up in its outline because often seeing only a small point light up inside it I don't understand if the camera has really focused or not. Is it a limitation of the new OM-1 that no longer has this possibility or is there an option in the menu to activate it that I didn't find?? Thank you if you will answer me, and sorry for my english but I'm an italian amateur photographer... :-))
