Wow Rob, this is an informative video for many Olympus shooters. I was already aware of these issues, but many are not. The focus clutch thing is something that has to drive Olympus/OM Systems nuts -- no telling how many people have returned cameras as defective due to this one issue. I bought my E-M1x from Olympus as a 'Refurb', and I am convinced it was a return over some issue like this -- it looked brand new when I received it, and had only 236 shutter clicks on it -- I've not had a moment of trouble with it. Another default setting that drives me nuts, personally, is the 'EVF Auto Switch' function. I instantly turn that off on any Olympus body I have. If I want to use the LCD, a simple button press turns it on and off. Thanks for all your helpful and informative videos.
I think everyone hates the clutch when then first get the OM-1. I know I did. However, after you train your muscle memory to check the clutch when you pick up your camera you will find it is a very useful feature. In fact I am disappointed that the 150-400 is missing it.
Yes, many find it very useful. I haven't found that I miss it on any of my other lenses. Still, I think it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Recent series of videos have been really excellent. Well done and best wishes from the UK. Wife particularly liked the educational ones for people starting out in photography.
Good stuff again. I would set a few things differently, but that is the beauty of OM-1 an other Olympus cameras. They can be customized to different ways or photographing.
Turning the beep off is the first thing I do. I used to keep the focus clutch off because of the same reasons and stories you shared. I had just got my E-M1 mark III, pulled my camera out on the boat going over to Mackinac Island and could not figure out why the hell my camera would not focus. lol I stuck it back in my bag and had to wait until I got to out hotel and figure it out. I felt so stupid. Sometimes frustration blinds me :)
Hello Rob -for 4:28 - after updating to firmware 1.6 the behavior changed. In firmware 1.6 the set home no longer brings the AF target mode to the set mode, but rather just bring the focus point to the center or home position, without changing the current AF target mode. Please let me know if you also run into this when you update. I know this is a relatively old video but I had to find this video to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.
Loving your uploads and very easy on the ear presenting style. I've just treated myself to upgrading from my trusty E5 to OM-1 and I'm really enjoying the experience and pleasantly surprised how intuitive the menus are and how it feels in the hand. I very much appreciate your info on the confusing settings. Your file naming fix I found and rectified on my 1st session after getting the duplicate file name problem. Something that would had me scratching my head about otherwise. I'm not sure if you have covered it in a video as I havnt had chance to watch all of them at present but I discovered the mode dial lock today and it took me a couple of minutes to realise I'd accidentally pushed the lock button 😳. Thanks again for the info. All the best from the UK
I use the ProGrade UHS-II v90 cards. They are a bit pricey, so I recommend the ProGrade v60 cards. I tested them and they are just as fast in-camera as my v90. You will save at least $100 on a 256gb card. amzn.to/408FwrW
Thank you Rob your tips were very helpful. I especially liked the auto focus tips, it's working much better now. Turning off the clutch also will stop me from doing exactly what you described. I also turned on the SF with MF which helps me to tweak the focus if needed and I don't miss using the clutch to go into MF. I appreciate your videos and all your tips. Thank You
The most annoying change in the OM-1 was the change they made to Home Position. I wish you had taken the opportunity to criticize that change. In the previous EM-1 models (starting with EM-1 mk II), the Home Position included optional settings for AF Mode, AF Target Mode, and AF Target Position. So you could use it to reset any combination of these settings. I used it to switch from either of the two AF settings controlled by the function lever (which for birds I had set to a large and small target mode in some variation of C-AF) to S-AF small target mode and no change in target position. A second press for Home Position function (I used a funciton button on E-M1.2, but the joystick on E-M1X and E-M1.3) would return to the previous settings. My biggest disappointment with the OM-1 was, when I went to set this up, to find that they had dropped settings for AF Mode in home position, and dropped the return to previous settings when pressing Home Position again. Instead of a toggle, it's a one-way ride. The implementation is completely inconsistent with the use of the function lever to store two settings, you wipe out what you set and have to reset it. So I don't use Home Position on the OM-1, I just use the switch to AF view and center position.
I definitely missed that one. I remember toggling between AF modes but didn't use it that much myself. I setup my custom modes instead. Still, the toggling is certainly faster and easier if that's all you need to do.
Having recently bit the bullet, as we say, and sold a load of little used cameras and lenses to buy the OM-1, i really dislike the new menu structure and much prefer the old one as per EM-10 mk ii. Take your first example, what have sound settings got to do with Drive Mode? You also have to go through all the settings pages in order to move through them. I can't find a way to go straight to one of the later pages of settings
@@RobTrek Thank you so mush Rob, I really appreciate this and it goes a long way to helping me understand how to use the menus and hopefully getting more out of my OM-1. It's going to go on an interesting journey with me in about 6 weeks time.....
Thank you, Rob. Your videos have been very helpful. One thing i noticed the difference with my previous EM1X is that previsouly, the multiple selector, if you press it, you can set that not only to a single point, you can change the autofocus setting from caf to saf, but it seems this option is gone now. Did you find that option or is this being taken out?
I don't have an EM1x, so can't compare. However, there are no af settings for the multi-function button. You basically have to use the fn-lever to switch af settings. The other work-around is to save different af settings to c1 & c2, then assign a button to each.
Useful. A couple of annoying things (for me): 1. The green square indicating the focus point is difficult to see on the OM1 (compared to the previous models), in particular in single point size. This typically occurs when I use the joystick to move around the focus point on green plants. -- Is there a way to enhance the visibility? Thicker lines, change color? 2. When moving around the single point sized focus point, it moves in big jumps. Is it possible to change this so that it moves (slower, but) in smaller steps?
@@RobTrek Re:point 1, I dont know whether changing Grid color will help. Gear, tab 5, Grid Settings. There’s preset 1 and 2 but you can change there colors. This also effects focus box which move depending on your point of focus interest
I just joined „team olympus“ 😁, thanks for your video. A question: when selecting a single focus point (smallest), I can only choose every second point, which is a bit annoying. I tried to change that in the menu, but couldn’t find anything. Is there a setting that takes care for that?

I don't own one of these new OMS top cameras, but who knows. Rob's videos are so practical that they are interesting to watch e g. just the tip about cameras not AFing!
My camera still looks pretty new. I think Rob has been able to use his a lot more than I have. I set my file name to AUTO. The reset options has caused me to accidentally write over a file more than once.
I'm presently using sony as my main camera. I'm getting an OM-1 in the next few days as a carry camera for it's light weight. An issue for me with sony's 90mm macro is the fact that if I use it's clutch. I immediately lose focus whenever I use it; and have to refocus again. It's a real pain in the rear. Please tell me that this is not an issue with with the 12-40mm pro 2.
I have the version 1 of the 12-40pro. It maintains the focus point when engaging and disengaging. The trick is it remembers the last manual focus point used. So if you switch to AF, refocus, and then switch back the clutch to MF, it will focus back to the original point of MF, not the new AF point you just did.
Looking into my crystal ball, I see a guy named Rob, buying a Canon R7 camera :)). The problem is longer lenses, weight and pricing. Time will tell on how that plays out however. Great tutorial on OM 1 settings to change, or not to change. That beep is not so great on the street, and other places. The rest of setting to change - yea! Strange about the Olympus Super Fine setting -- always been that way. Why not just SF as standard, then C for crappier for medium quality images. ;) Take care, Loren Schwiderski
The Filename Reset/Auto switch has apparently been moved (on the OM-1?). It is at H1 of the Cogwheel set of Menu items on my EM1ii, iii and Mx and also on the Pen F.
Good suggestions.Since I primarily shoot wildlife and landscapes, it is important to know how to change settings (such as AF confirmation Beep and Manual Focus Clutch) quickly for different subjects. And settings for Birds in Flight is also a completely different animal (pun intended)! Thanks!
The only way I know to keep the settings separate from the camera is using the OI Share App. I think you can do it in Workspace as well, but I've not used that feature.
A good simple to follow video. I just wish I'd seen it before I set my custom settings. Each time I changed the copyright and home point I had to re-save each of the custom settings :( didn't take long but ... unless there is a simpler way to make some settings persistent between custom and the other modes.
Thank you very much for the inputs, however: - I’m going to keep the clutch operative, as I can switch MF to AF in a click. - As files sequence, you in US have a fantastic format to catalog: the way you write the date. YYYY-MM-DD or 2023-01-01. There’s an option as naming the file that has the date as first number, followed by time. No matter how many times you format or switch the cards, the sequence will never be the same because the date and surely the time, will change automatically. Having said that, the rest of the suggestions are useful even for me, as my settings are those ones too. But one thing puzzled me: - On the E-m1 mk2 when visioning the previous image on the monitor, as soon as I’d get close to the viewfinder, the image would disappear and I would be ready to shoot the next frame. On the OM-1 it stays on. Has anyone figured out yet how to disable this really annoying function? Thank you again GG
Hi Rob - trying to get my head around setting up the OM1 having jumped ship from Sony. The main issue I am having is trying to disable the focus from the shutter button when using back button focus. The Sony allows this - just press the BBF and let go and the focus is locked. On the OM1 it appears to be different. If you use the BBF and let go it can still be overridden by the shutter button initiating a different focus point. This is where my issue happens - if I use BBF and then need to use the front wheel I , on many occasions, just glance the shutter button and it chooses a new focus point. Is there a way to disable focus from the shutter button, am I doing something wrong or do I just accept that I need to hold in the BBF whilst using the shutter button. Thanks
Hi, Tim. Sorry I missed your question. I actually answered a similar question in this video here ua-cam.com/video/8LRWb8KNsNU/v-deo.html&lc=UgwCtXgCd2Gqu9LuEYN4AaABAg Here is another tip given by a viewer Tim Evans After playing with the AF settings for a while I found that for me the most convenient way to use BBF is to set "AF-ON in MF mode" (the first AF menu) to "yes" and then, if I want to use BBF, set the focus mode to M. The AF-ON button still works, but half-pressing the shutter button doesn't change the focus. So you don't have to change settings for the shutter button which you might forget to reset before your next shootings. With the focus mode set to M via the manual clutch, however, this does not work - it disables the AF-ON function.
hi, love these tips. But I typed in my copyright info and accidentally added a character on the end. I can see the little rubbish bin icon but I have pressed every button on the camera but can't find how to get to the bin or delete the character. Any ideas?
@@RobTrek hey - as you are on here, can I ask - do you have a flash video for OM-1? I just realised it doesn't have an inbuilt one so wanting to buy one. Looked at Fl-lm3 but maybe need something powered for a flash course i am doing too
I don't have any specifically for the OM-1, but have a few videos using flash. They are not in-depth tutorials, so maybe I'll do one soon. But here is my flash playlist: ua-cam.com/video/quMtMkkVCXU/v-deo.html
The most annoying setting on the OM-1, is that when shooting in video mode, I have to change the shutterspeed in increments of 0.3 with the back wheel. So it takes forever to change it from 1/60 to 1/120. Is there really no other way to change it faster, like I have used on all other camera before OM-1? This is super annoying.
[1] Beep: Hell no… the 90s want their focus beep back [2] Clutch off: Well, ok for beginners, yet the clutch stores its position, so very useful to reset to a point For me personally, it gets better from there: [3] Great tip, I was not even aware that the click on the focus joystick could do anything [4] Didn't bother me yet, though did not even know that reset was the default [5] Useful, though a bit clumsy [6] That default „fine“ file format I would even classify as a bug
Video has no sound., I have tried everything!!! Out of the box , this camera video sound is turned off by default .. BUT HOW DO U TURN IT ON ??? I am ready to return this camera 😂. No sound on video … grrrr., Where is the setting to turn it on ??? Thank you for any help !!
A video about annoying things to change starts with turning ON the focus confirmation beep? If I'm leading a group I tell them to turn off all sounds or wait in the car.
Hi Rob, Thanks again for your most valuable tips. I got caught out just the other day with lens MF clutch being engaged and I did not understand why I was unable to engage the “S-AF” mode. I realised eventually and being new to the OM-1 and the MF clutch lens system, which incidentally I think is great, I was somewhat relieved that my camera was not broken after all! Another question Rob, if I may? I have adopted your custom settings C1 and C2, which I find most valuable when I loose my way. My question is will I be required to make the menu changes to both C1 & C2 settings or are they now available across all operational modes? I know you often suggest doing a total camera reset, which I did before implementing your C1 & C2 settings. So is it possible to select the C1 settings make the new menu adjustment and save back to C1 (overwrite), or save to C3 and delete the C1 settings? One last question Rob and I will leave you in peace. On my Canon 1DX & 5D I am able to store custom setting to the SD Card, reset the camera and reload the saved custom settings from the SD card. Would that be possible on the OM-1 System? Once again Rob I cannot express strongly enough how much I appreciate your expertise and guidance, so I sincerely thank you for all the hard work and effort you put in to help your fellow photographers.
Fortunately the Copyright information is persistent, so you don't have to re-enter it. Whether it is on or off is not. It is clearly possible to have some persistent information across custom settings.
@@RobTrek Settings persistence does work in the other direction: if I set subject detection on in any of PASM then use a custom setting which has subject detection off (for example landscape) then go back to any of PASM subject detection is still set.
On reflection that's obvious and would be a problem if it were not so. The answer is to get the basic settings right first before moving on to custom settings.
@@boboneill1828 I was going to say the same thing. I sometimes toggle between modes. For example, I setup C4 to be Shutter Priority with S-AF. Then I assign C4 to a front button. I put the mode dial back to S, then change that to C-AF. I can now toggle between S-AF and C-AF in shutter priority mode by pushing the front button. I've greatly over simplified the example, but I'm sure you get the idea.
@@RobTrek I like that idea. I already use the function lever to switch between S-AF and C-AF, as that gives me compatability with my E-M5, but following your example I have set my most used custom mode to a front button. Saves a lot of fiddle with the top dial. Thank you.
It is painful sitting through an 11 minute video when the same information could be presented much more efficiently in images and graphics. You have good information, please change the mode of presentation and it will be much more useful and take up a lot less bandwidth.

Strange about the Olympus Super Fine setting -- always been that way. Why not just SF as standard, then C for crappier for medium quality images. ;) Take care, Loren Schwiderski
Haha! C for crap. I like that.
Thanks!
Thank you!
The Filename Reset/Auto switch has apparently been moved (on the OM-1?). It is at H1 of the Cogwheel set of Menu items on my EM1ii, iii and Mx and also on the Pen F.
Yes, among a few other changes.
I failed to deactivate the touch shutter in live mode based on your recommended settings
Good suggestions.Since I primarily shoot wildlife and landscapes, it is important to know how to change settings (such as AF confirmation Beep and Manual Focus Clutch) quickly for different subjects. And settings for Birds in Flight is also a completely different animal (pun intended)! Thanks!
Thank you!
wITH ALL THESE SETTING CHAANGES IS THERE AWAY TO PRINT OUT THE SET UP SO I CAN RESET CAMERA TI THE SEETING IF I LOSE THEM OR GET ANOTHER OM1
Thanks. I'll have to give some thought to this. Copyright is one, but there are others.
Thank you very much for the inputs, however:
- I’m going to keep the clutch operative, as I can switch MF to AF in a click.
But one thing puzzled me:
- On the E-m1 mk2 when visioning the previous image on the monitor, as soon as I’d get close to the viewfinder, the image would disappear and I would be ready to shoot the next frame. On the OM-1 it stays on. Has anyone figured out yet how to disable this really annoying function?
Thank you again
GG
Thanks for sharing your tips. Unfortunately, on the previous Olympus cameras, there is no way to keep the preview on from Live View to the EVF..
I actually answered a similar question in this video here ua-cam.com/video/8LRWb8KNsNU/v-deo.html&lc=UgwCtXgCd2Gqu9LuEYN4AaABAg
Here is another tip given by a viewer Tim Evans
After playing with the AF settings for a while I found that for me the most convenient way to use BBF is to set "AF-ON in MF mode" (the first AF menu) to "yes" and then, if I want to use BBF, set the focus mode to M. The AF-ON button still works, but half-pressing the shutter button doesn't change the focus. So you don't have to change settings for the shutter button which you might forget to reset before your next shootings.
With the focus mode set to M via the manual clutch, however, this does not work - it disables the AF-ON function.
@@RobTrek Many Thanks - thats what I was looking for
nice tips thanks for sharing :-)
My pleasure 😊
hi, love these tips. But I typed in my copyright info and accidentally added a character on the end. I can see the little rubbish bin icon but I have pressed every button on the camera but can't find how to get to the bin or delete the character. Any ideas?
Use the front dial to move the cursor over to the unwanted character, then push the "Trashcan" button on the camera to delete it.
@@RobTrek thank you! Now I feel dumb - tried every other button apart from that one!
Go into the movie menu on page 1. Turn off Flicker Scan.
@@RobTrek Ohhh you are the Man! You saved my day! SuperThanx a lot 🙂
[1] Beep: Hell no… the 90s want their focus beep back
[2] Clutch off: Well, ok for beginners, yet the clutch stores its position, so very useful to reset to a point
For me personally, it gets better from there:
[3] Great tip, I was not even aware that the click on the focus joystick could do anything
[4] Didn't bother me yet, though did not even know that reset was the default
[5] Useful, though a bit clumsy
[6] That default „fine“ file format I would even classify as a bug
Thanks for the feedback.
Video has no sound.,
I have tried everything!!!
Out of the box , this camera video sound is turned off by default .. BUT HOW DO U TURN IT ON ???
I am ready to return this camera 😂.
No sound on video … grrrr.,
Where is the setting to turn it on ??? Thank you for any help !!
Hi, Bernie. I tried to answer your question in this video: ua-cam.com/video/5_kTokVqaHY/v-deo.html Hopefully that helps. Thanks. -Rob
@@RobTrek thank u !!!!!
@@RobTrek
I will watch this video when I get home tonight , but oh my goodness thank you so much for your time and effort in this
A video about annoying things to change starts with turning ON the focus confirmation beep?
If I'm leading a group I tell them to turn off all sounds or wait in the car.
Ironic. Isn't it? I don't disagree but people have been asking me specifically about turning the af confirmation sound back on for silent shutter.
Hi Rob,
Thanks again for your most valuable tips.
Hi, William. I answered your question in a video here: ua-cam.com/video/oaUePMApWKE/v-deo.html
Fortunately the Copyright information is persistent, so you don't have to re-enter it. Whether it is on or off is not. It is clearly possible to have some persistent information across custom settings.
I was just about to say that. Thanks.
Thank you.
I don't believe that you can get annoyed. You have been so calm (on UA-cam) for past few years...🙂... although you are human. So...
👍
Thank you!
Always get something useful from you Rob. email address in Artist Name is a good idea.
Thanks, Peter!
Hate the beep but i am mainly a bird shooter
I turn the beep off for birding too. It's pretty useless for that.
It is painful sitting through an 11 minute video when the same information could be presented much more efficiently in images and graphics. You have good information, please change the mode of presentation and it will be much more useful and take up a lot less bandwidth.
Thanks for the feedback. I get this complaint from time to time. I really do try to be succinct. I'm not so good with graphics and other video production techniques. The best I can offer is to play back my videos at 1.5x using the youtube settings.
Thanks
