Great song by a great singer & when the instrumental break came along i got goose bumps, played exactly like my late drummer & my bass would drive the leads. Sorry we all have a meter that expires unpredictably.
That's me on guitar!! I was with Keith for 8 years. Played bass for a few years then went to lead guitar. The steel break was one of Carson's most interesting!!!
"Only the GREAT Die Young" Just like another great and a hero to Keith, Hank Williams. So many similarities. Mr. Whitney landed and spread his wings .....got me hooked then he was gone. Hank Williams made a lifetime of hit songs and influenced the industry in a span of really 4 years. From his 1st hit in 1947 " move it on over" to his last" I'll never make it out of this world alive" 1947-1952 he charted 35 singles and 11 number 1 songs. 1 year after his death he had 4 Straight go to number 1. Keith Whitley's first song ti(l) the charts was Miami my A=¥t>I_my in 1986. Span of three years from 1986 to 1989 he had 10 top 10 hits and 5 go #1.. RIP Fellas
Just like Lefty! Of all the recordings by so many other people, this is the one that I could not tell apart from Lefty's. Sensational. We miss you, Keith. RIP
Marietta, You are right. I should have said just like Lefty, not a lot like Lefty. Really can’t tell them apart. I wish we still had singers like Lefty and Keith. They are few and far between. We can always count on Gene Watson to belt out a good one.🎸
Does anyone know what’s going on with the Steel Guitar around the 2.00 Mark? It goes very low for a few seconds. Was it supposed to sound like that or did he accidentally go too low then recovered? Even the crowd noticed that something didn’t seem right. It almost reminded me of like a power drain, but he ended that rift with the same low note. I just found it interesting.
Terribly, terribly sad how he died. From alcohol, such an incredible voice, so talented, so likable. Life was too hard for him. We miss you, Keith. I hope you are singing where you are so they can all hear you.
We love Keith Whitley. Beautiful!! Hank loved recording with Lefty !
The Legendary Guitarist Hank Garland Family
Love Keith and all his songs - especially "Don't Close Your Eyes" - such a shame he didn't love himself as much as we loved him.............

Keith does a nice job with this tune, but he still takes a back seat to his idol Lefty Frizzell who wrote and sang this tune!
Great voice, great backing!!

Just like Lefty! Of all the recordings by so many other people, this is the one that I could not tell apart from Lefty's. Sensational. We miss you, Keith. RIP
I had the joy of meeting Keith in Georgia

Sounds a lot different. Even better.
Great
You can really tell that Lefty had a big influence on him when he sings this song
I think I should dedicate this to my boo, Annie. I love her a thousand ways.
Keith Whitley and Lefty Frizzell had something in common: They were left-handed but played guitar right-handed.
Roger Barrett you really have me curious now. I’ve never heard this before about Keith. Could you tell me how you know he was left handed? Thanks!
yeah.
If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was Lefty singing
I'm not sure I've heard a better cover of this song.
Gone too soon
Original song by Lefty Frizzell 👍

Hay Day Tinker Terri I personally thought it was on purpose it sounded really cool.
oppps,,,Alaska
A worthy copy of Lefty's version.
