  • This Tom T. Hall-penned tune was one Keith rarely performed live. This was recorded during a tour of Holland he embarked on just weeks before his untimely death. Keith had developed quite a following in Europe, which started with his appearance at Wembley Stadium in London and the release of his debut single in the UK, "The Birmingham Turnaround."

This is superb. That "dislike" was caused by someone mashing the wrong button because they couldn't see through the tears. This is real country. There is no substitute.

Thanks for the reply - I live in the Czech Republic now and there are lots of Keith Whitley fans here as well. Our Bluegrass band also does its best to promote his legacy - we recorded the Birmingham Turnaround and Don't Close Your Eyes on our first CD and are in the process of recording Miami, My Amy for our second release. Thanks for promoting Keith's music . . . it's just so much better than anything you get to hear nowadays . . .

Every song Keith Whitley sang was amazing and I don't know how any one could argue that his songs were absolutely beautiful I just wish he could have been saved country music today would have been a completely different picture more artists would have been inspired to sing and write like that

Wow! Cool! It constantly amazes me how many people from Europe have been touched by Keith. He's got quite a following in many European countries such as England, Germany, Holland, Greece, etc. And yes, Tom T. is still alive and doing his thing. A phenomenal storyteller he is, too!

Great song by Tom T, and his version is the one to measure others by, but Keith Whitley was the absolute master of the sad song, and this version is terrific. Would that he had lived to record a studio version. But would his label have tolerated a stripped down backing like this?

    • @RossM3838

if Keith and Garth Fundis has a say the answer would have been yes.

Wow, Keith, what a vocal performance again . . . I wish I'd been there - coming from Holland I feel kinda guilty . . . well, huge thanks for making this available on the net!!!
By the way - I think Tom T. Hall is still alive, kickin', pickin' and writin' - hope I'm right.

No, this was from a bootleg concert recording from a concert he put on in Holland in the spring of '89, when he made the trip to Europe to make an appearance on the Wembley Country Music Festival that year in London. The few tracks I have from this concert are relatively poor quality--low volume, etc. It was not recorded from the soundboard.

One of the greatest songs that I have ever heard. A GEM ! Wonderfully performed by an artist that would have been another "George Jones", had he not passed on. Tom T. Hall composes the BEST ballads of all time, like this one. Give his "It Sure Can Get Cold In Des Moines" a listen, too.

If Carson Chamberlain’s steel break at 1:59 doesn’t give you chills I don’t know what will. Keith insanely gifted on his own, but his band really gave him an edge.
