    Very educational information. Could save you thousands as most shops will lie to you and tell you to replace the whole transmission. Great job

    Love all these videos! It seems I have an issue that isn’t talked about much. In my 1992 200k 300d with a 722.4. I lost all engagement with no warning.
    Story goes like this. Drove to the post office, handled business, try to leave and the car never moved again under it’s own power.
    So, I should say that I work at a shop but we do zero internal transmission repair. we send that stuff out along with machine work. The car for sure is not worth the cost of a three year warranty rebuild for 2k, so I want to try to fix it myself.
    I don’t actually have a line pressure gauge but from what I can tell at the cooler lines there may be a flow issue however there was no pump whine like I would expect. I dropped the pan and to my surprise the fluid is pretty clean, doesn’t smell burnt, and I don’t see debris in the pan or filter. So, without much more though and 45 minutes later I have the transmission on the bench assuming I should find an obvious pump issue, but I didn’t. The pump gears are nice and not scored. all seals seem to be intact(rubber and Teflon). I went back and looked at the drum bands and don’t see any broke bands and from what I can tell none are “smoked”. I took a hard look at the linkage and the valve body shift selector and all seems normal. I want to fix the car for fun but I don’t want to throw parts at it.
    anyone seen anything like this? Am I overlooking the failed pump/bushing/seal? Could a bad torque converter act like this without seeing all the debris?
    Also, when the car first had its fluid checked it was overfilled but I believe the fluid level had risen after it failed like the converter drained. There is no whining or noise coming tranny it is silent.

    rebuilt the valve body, check the piston on the side and put in a new lip seal, now still no 2nd and we lost 4th... 1 to 3 and that is all...
    Any suggestions?

    Question... I have a 400e skipping second but holding until higher rpm to go to 3rd and then again into 4th. Slowing down or stopping, it seems to bind up and is really unhappy... Any thoughts?

    I have a 722.3 that had coolant contamination from the radiator. New fluid and filter and now it will not shift out of first.
    Any ideas, suggestions?

    1984 380sl 722.3 - 1st and 2nd with no issues, shifts smooth, but no 3rd or 4th. I changed the filter and fluid but still the same. Two weeks ago I was driving and when I pulled from a light it started...I pulled over and verified the fluid level was fine then I just, while stopped, went through the gears then pulled out and it worked again. I tried that but it didn't solve the issue. Any ideas? I just signed up for your patreon. :)

    Hey there I have a 1996 Mercedes w210 e230 4 cylinder petrol which comes with 722.440 automatic transmission. I need a transmission replacement when older transmission came out it was 722.438 which is of e300d. Which has almost same HP and torque and it is a cable transmission not the electronic controlled one as I have the 4 speed transmission. My question is if I put any 722.4xx transmission which comes out from a 6 cylinder or a 4 cylinder less HP and torque transmission will it effect my car performance and drive .

    Hey, so i changed my K1 spring on my 722.3 because i have a pretty big flare from 2-3 when under load, when im off throttle it takes a second or 2 to shift to 3rd. Changing out the k1 spring didnt help. Im wondering if this is an vacuum problem because when i put it in “D” it almost instantly goes to the 4th gear and kickdown doesnt work. I have to stand still for it to downshift

    Thanks for all the information. My 1994 E200 (722.431) has similar problem. In the beginning it started to shift to 2nd gear a little bit too late, then it started not to shift to 2nd gear on uphills. So is the problem k2 piston seal for sure? (Transmission valve body repair was done a year ago.)

      does it skip second and go straight to 3rd?>

      Only skips when going uphills. If i go slowly from a complete stop then it shifts into 2nd. Also when i'm in second gear if i manually select "2" it stays in two unless the car comes to a stop.

    Pierre, what do you think about 5-speed conversion? I have a 1985 300D. I really wish she was a 5-speed. People say Getrag 717.400 would fit on these. Have you ever done a conversion like this? Do you agree with it? Do you hate the transmission swap ideas? It'd be a good video topic i think... Thanks a bunch...

      I've driven several 4 speed conversions...I don't like the combination of manual transmission and diesel engine , the second gear is not as strong as it should be. if you want to undertake a conversion like this, be prepared to spend a lot of time troubleshooting vibrations and make sure to replace the syncros in the donor gearbox before you install it.

      are you referring to a 2w-3 slip or a 3-4 slip? A 3-4 slip, especially a severe one , is a sign that the clutch plates might be worn out.

    HI, my 4 speed has no problem going into reverse, 1st and second gear are good too, but wont upshift to third and fourth. There are no leaks that I can see anywhere and I removed some fluid to inspect and found it to be dirty brown colour.

      change your filter, as it is probably blocked. this causes low modulating pressure, resulting in no 3rd gear shift

    Hello,I have a 1994 s500 coupe and I was wondering do you know where can I get a gear shift rod for my 722.3 valve body the yellow piece on the end of rod broke so my car won't move and I can't find it anywhere,do you know where or are you able to get hands on one for me,thanks!     hy Pierre i am from Europe and have last month problem with no go at the 4th gear,,,,I went to do service new oil,fliter and radiator and still is the same....1.2.3 shifts normal but no 4th gear please can you give me a hint what too verify

    My transmission starts mostly in second gear unless you make kickdown. Sometimes it passes from 2nd gear to 4th. What kind of problem I have? Thanks

      what mercedes/model do you have? if its a 722.3 the rubber seal on the second gear piston must be bad

      Yes transmission is 722.3. After changing the atf and filter the problem seems like have solved. But I'am not sure. Thanks for your dear technical information. Probably we have to disassemble the transmission to reach that rubber seal.

    hi my w124 1995 722.4 Transmission . the car dose not go forward or reverse Suddenly .oil is full i change oil filter to solve it but nothing .i think problem in valve body but i need to know what is the specific piston in valve body i should replace?

    my Sd 1985 started to act up lately. it wont go to 3rd. As it tries to shift 3rd it just flares up and loses power until it goes back to second. There are time it shifts good to 3rd. I know its not slipping cause once it successfully shifts to 3rd, I could feel the strong firm engagement and pulls the car forward. Could it be a vacuum problem? Any tip would be a great help. Am already planning to overhaul already. But before I do, I am looking for other advices. Thank you.

      i think you have a blocked trans filter...unless the fuel filter is blocked and you have to push the accelerator so hard it is causing upshift delay.

Actually when I got her second hand almost 9 years ago I already noticed the flaring from 2 to 3 but but she still shifts to 3rd right after the flare. lately the shift to 3rd is sometime is lost and she loses power.. it longer shifts to 3rd even after the flare and I just go to 2nd manually and press the gas hoping she shifts to 3. But more often than not, after quite some time ( a minute or so) the shift to 3rd still comes. I just hope its just the transmission fluid and filter and nothing else. Again Pier, Thank you very much for your help. I appreciated. I'll get back to you when I have changed her trans oil.

      @@EndofUSA how did this resolve? I have the same problem. The third gear wont engage until the transmission is at work temperature. Then it shifts just fine. I have replaced filter and oil and also drained the torque converter. It became a tad better but the problem is still present. Next up i will try to remove the valve bodies and clean it up. I have bought new nylon rings for the pistons and new springs from mercedes but this is a major job for me so i hesitate into doing it unless i know the problem will be fixed.. thanks!

    So my 722.4 shifts into 2nd and almost immediately 3rd 95% of the time. On occasion it will hold 2nd gear. No flares

      You will need the k2 piston seal and the seal ring for the cover. You also need a heck of a long bar to compress the piston cover.

    Great video.. I am in Mauritius and just purchased think the last 300SEL 3.0 6l still on road.
    My issue is when Reverse is engaged, it gives a BIG kick and need to press hard on the stop pedal to limit the jerk.
    Can you please help as I really want to keep this car and spares are quite scarce on the island.

      Achmet, how long does it take for reverse to engage? Also, what is your idle speed? If the engine is idling way too fast this will happen. It sounds like your idle air valve or maybe your over voltage protection relay might be acting up.

      It takes around 2-3 seconds to engage even in R and D.
      Idle seems ok around 700-800 rpm.
      I must point out that my central locking not working but can hear clearly the vacuum pump in trunk.
      Any guess.. As i just want to keep for a long journey.
      Also the speedo showing 87k
