Woodturning Half a Log into a Small Bowl
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- About a year ago I wood turned a bowl out of a log I cut in two, and I really liked it. I'm a little better at turning now, so I thought I'd try it again. I didn't go as thin as last time, but I really like the shape of this bowl and the grain of the wood.

Duuuudeeee. It looks so cool when the rotation syncs with the camera framerate. Looks like the wood is in slowmo while everything else is full speed. And we can clearly see what's happening.
Yeah I love that too. Unfortunately I’m not the best at working the camera, so it’s hard for me to get right
Nice turn, came out great. The question is, of course, do you know what wood it is?
Thank you! It’s eucalyptus
Nice work - what kind of wood is it?
Can you tell me what size gouge you used in the first part of the video? It looked large and useful!
It’s a 3/4” Sorby. It’s nice and hefty, so it doesn’t bounce around when I’m roughing
Beautiful shaped bowl and it works perfectly with the grain too 🥰
Thanks so much 😊
So I cut my log, mounted it in the screw chuck… turned the lathe on and IT TRIED TO LEAVE THE ROOM! I have a pretty small lathe, it was reeeally boogying. I cut off a little excess, and once it started to get close to round things settled down. Tomorrow I’ll finish hollowing. Thank you for posting, I wouldn’t have tried this without your inspiration.
Haha I know that feeling!
What size is that last forstner bit you use and who makes it? I can't find any that are bigger than 2" that are reasonably priced. All the ones over 2" they want an arm and a leg for
I’ll find the link for the one I bought. To be honest it’s not great quality, but I sharpened it and now it works pretty well
Here it is. I have 65, 85, and 95mm bits. amzn.to/2QEJkSR
For some reason, my Forstner bit smoke after a couple of minutes
Happens to mine when they’re dull. Also happens if the rpms are too fast
Parabéns vcs são professores da tornaria ficou muito bonito trabalho nota dez excelente peça 👏👏🙏
The wood grain in that bowl was definitely amazing. I would also imagine that turning bowls were probably some of the first trial projects you began with, but when they turn out this nice, I would also imagine that your home is full of various bowls, as well as many friends and family. LOL!
Thanks Lynn! Yes I started with bowls from the very beginning. Most of them were “learning experiences” meaning they became firewood haha, but the few good ones I give to family and friends
Beautiful bowl with nice grain 👍
Cheers
Would be so much better if you talk to us. Narrate your videos. Tell us what you're doing.
Nice little bowl! Two suggestions: 1) make a flat platform around the hole for the screw chuck - that will give a firmer grip and on small bowls you will not even need support of your tailstock. 2) Give a bit more attention in the sanding of the "wings" - elbow grease may be needed but it is worth the effort. Kind regards.
Beautiful bowl! What are the sizes of the forstner bits snd brand or where can I get them? Thanks
Thanks! These are the ones I use, I have 95, 85, and 65mm (and one smaller one that I forgot the size). amzn.to/2RNjGM4
Beautiful shape and gorgeous grain pattern. Excellent job. 👍
That is a very pretty bowl but also very cool video work. I can watch wood turning videos for hours, but have never tried it. How difficult is a making bowl like this, on a 1-10 scale?
Once you know what you’re doing it’s relatively easy compared to some other things on the lathe. But getting it perfect is the difficult part...
Amazing colour variations in the wood!! Cool shape too, me like!!
Beautiful little bowl! How much are these when you get them done?
I think this one sold for $50
Congratulations ! It's a very very beautiful Bowl sincerely !! Good day and Hello from France !!!
Thank you as always!
Great job, lovely bowl! Simply beautiful!
Looks great love the shape and color keep turning stay safe👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
really love the grain :) any idea which wood it is?
It’s jacaranda
Love the shape of the bowl and the way in which you have shown off the grain in the wood.
Thank you!
What size is your forstner bit
At 3:52 it looks like you are turning the air. Absolutely gorgeous.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Yeah I love watching those parts!
Wow look at those gorgeous lines! Thanks for sharing this one. Stay safe, Vickie
Thanks Vickie!
let me see if I have this correct :), since you only used 1/2 a log and due to the height of the rim the person using it only get's half a bowl of something?
Haha yep, it’s my method for cutting calories
But what about all that fibre?, it can't be good for the body.. ☺
Beautiful piece of work outstanding finish really brings out the grain.
Thanks!
Forgot to ask, what kind of wood was used?
This is some species of eucalyptus
加油,你做的很好,是我的榜样,马上10万了。
What did you use for your finish? Bowl turned out really nice.
Thanks! It was butcher block oil. It's a mix of mineral oil and beeswax
Love the shape of this bowl, well done.
That grain looks fantastic
Yeah I really liked it
