    Thank you!!! Genie sent me a replacement motor BUT that wasn't the problem I see by watching your video! So I have ordered a new capacitor and am waiting for it to et here!

    I can only find the shorter capacitators online, where can a find the 4 inch.

    Whoo Hoo. After watching this, I ordered from Amazon the capacitor and installed it and now my 26 year old (installed it myself in 1991) is still working like a champ. Tell me anything these days that lasts 26 years. I doubt the new Genies last this long. The only other thing I've replaced is the plastic latch that engages the screw to move the door up and down. Did that a number of years back. Thank you a million for making this video....!

    My capacitor made a sound like a fuse blowing. When I removed motor cover, there was lots of oil from the capacitor inside. A different issue from yours buzzing. Do you think replacing the capacitor will fix it? I hate to throw good money after bad if thats not the actual problem. Thanks for great how-to video

    Out of all the videos I've watched yours is the only one that went straight to the point. I'm going to order the capicitor and hope it works...mine is doing the exact same thing. Thanks again?

    Thanks for your video. As others described, I waded through many videos before finding yours that accurately met my issue. $20 capacitor and it works like a charm again. I'm not sure if you are able, but renaming your posting to include "hum with no movement" might help search results.

    Thanks for the Video. I have a 1/2 HP Genie that was only going up 6"-12" and then stop unless I held down the wired control button. Only then would it go up all the way. After doing that a couple of times the heard a crackling and say smoke come out of the box. I opened it up, ran it again and smoke came out of the capacitor. Now it does nothing. Do you think the capacitor was the problem to start with? I had every joint and moving part lubed up. Please advise and thank you!

    Thanks for the great video! Once question: can we use the shorter capacitor when it used to have a longer one?

    I wanted to ask for some advice. I went ahead and replaced the capacitor as you did here and made sure it was the same specifications as the original. My issue is the motor sounds like it is struggling just like yours before the replacement of the part and is still doing the same thing after the part replacement. when I press the hard wired button the motor runs forward for 1 second then backwards for 1 second then shuts off. The same thing happens when using the wireless remote. I have checked the door infared sensors and they are not blocked and the lights are a steady green. If I try it a couple more times the motor freezes and make a humming noise but will not move. I can actually turn the rear of the motor by hand without much force and I am testing the unit without the door being engaged. Do you think it may be the motor itself? There is some play at the back of the motor and I can push on the plastic fan like wheel on the rear of the motor and it moves back and forth maybe a 1/4 of an inch. I also have removed and inspected both boards and do nto see any bulging or burn marks on either. I would say the unit itself is about 10 years old. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

      It is rare for the motor to go bad. Not impossible. It is usually the parts around it that go out. The capacitor and the sequencer board are the most common. When these go out the motor usually will not turn at all. Maybe make a clicking sound. The sequencer board does not usually show visible damage. There is also a coupler that joins the motor to the rail that wears out and makes it hard for the screw to turn. You need to take the motor down and remove the two bolts that hold the rail to the motor to check the coupler. Older models did not have a coupler. The rail was installed to the motor by the manufacturer. These models have a clutch that wears out. I am not sure which model you have. I have also seen the casing that the motor mounts to crack and cause problems. Also these motors have a shutoff, if you run the motor too much it will shutdown for about 20 min. Don't waste too much time and headache on it. You can find new motors on sale for a reasonable price, if you install it yourself. Let me know if you need more. Good Luck.

      G S Overhead Systems Thank you for the information. I just wasn't sure if it would be the coupler if I can turn the whole screw assembly by hand but I will check that out. I really appreciate it! Thank you for posting the videos.

    My Garage door makes the has the exact symptoms as the opener in this video. I changed the capacitor with one that is known to work and it still has the same symptoms. Any other ideas what will cause this issue? I have also replace the sequencer board. All wires are tight and show no signs of wear. The the wall switch is turned to the "off" position; when the button on the wall is pressed the opened shows the symptoms when it show actually not be working at all. Model H6000-07. Please assist.

      +Tony Smith Those 2 parts are usually the cause of that problem. The only other thing I can think of, maybe the coupler joining the rail and head is worn out and causing the screw drive to be stuck and cannot spin. One time I tightened the 2 bolts that are holding the rail to the head too much and the screw could not spin until I loosened them a bit. Also, I have had times that the grease in the screw rail is too thick, dried up and causing the screw drive to freeze. A little spray lube may free it up. Then re grease with correct grease. If you unplug and remove the cover. You may be able to spin the screw manually for a few turns to free it up. Also. check that the limit switches are not stuck in the closed position. That is all I can think of right now.

    thank you, be ware out there there's a lot of scamers, I just got charged $30 for " service fee" but no service was ever done two guys to come over ...looked at my unit and say..."you need to replace the motor" and there you go $30 down the drain. be careful out there

      That service fee was for the SERVICE CALL! The fee to have someone come out to your house dumb-ass. No scam, I don't know if your aware, but time and gas for the trip cost money!!! DUMB-ASS

    I thought this was the same issue I had because the noise was the same as in the video but I replaced the capacitor and it didn't make a difference. Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    I have a genie H8000 07 and have eliminated all other possibilities. Any way to determine whether a problem is capacitor, motor, or circuit board?
    (Lights work, no sound of any kind by using wall switch, car remote, or outside wall entry switch, safety sensors good).

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  8 років тому +1

      Motor very rarely burns out. Sometimes the capacitor explodes or starts to come apart where the wires are attached or you can see burn marks or smell. The circuit board has a set of contacts like point that may get stuck in the closed position. I guess the correct way is to get specs and an ohm meter to test. I usually carry extra parts and replace one to test.

    • @StanWilhite
      @StanWilhite 8 років тому

      Thank you for your reply! The capacitor isn't leaking or coming apart. Are the "contacts" you brought up mechanical contacts? I have an ohm meter and I'm familiar with electronics.Is there a way to ck the cir brd?
      Thanks again, Stan

    Don't you need to discharge the capacitor before taking it off?

  • @strouja

    Hey, thanks a million. I had the exact same problem with my old Genie I think it was Model 12A (probably 20 years old or more). It just made the same buzzing sound you show in your video. I could not easily see the damage on the capacitor but as I was replacing it could see the
    damage. I got this capacitor Genie Garage Door Opener 19988A Capacitor
    from Amaazon from here
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSWZV2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00
    and followed your instructions. I think I blew out the capacitor by installing and testing a smarthings hub and relay switch to open and close garage door
    via smartphone. I was opening and closing the door a lot that night and it eventually broke.
    Two of the contacts were very hard to remove and I had to loosen the grip on them with a thin flat head screw driver and a box cutter razor (I had to pry back the contact a bit).
    Thanks again this helped quite a bit (I try to be handy and usually end up making things worse, in this case I had success and I owe a lot of that to you).
