    The best way to discharge a capacitor is to set your multimeter to Volts. Go across each terminal and read your meter and you will see it go to 0 Volts. I was taught this way, safest and professional way. Good vid!

    &Thank you for making this video in the first place! My grandma’s A/C went out (mid summer in the valley - worst timing EVER) and the repairman quoted nearly $500 for the repair. He said the capacitor needed to be replaced(2nd time for this system) & told my grandma it was possible to replace it without hiring a professional. I’ve worked on cars in the past and am pretty good with repairs, so I’m going to save her about $400 by doing the job myself. The only bit I was worried about was discharging the capacitor, which led me to this suuuper helpful video! :) My grandma and I both really appreciate it!

    I want to thank you for your easy to understand video! My A/C stopped working yesterday and I discovered the condenser fan was not turning. I did research and found the likely culprit was the capacitor, but I felt a little uneasy messing with it. After watching your video my confidence was boosted. I ordered a replacement capacitor, followed your steps, and I am very happy to say I have A/C again! What probably would have cost a few hundred dollars for a service call only cost $11 from Amazon and 15 minutes of my time! Thanks again!!!

    Thank you for this video. My air conditioner pooped out during the night and the capacitor has been changed a few years back and I am hoping I can just change it out again on my own. I can't thank you enough for posting these vids. My old capacitor was a 70+10 +/-6%. The new one I installed (thanks to you) is a 70+10 +/-5%. Does this 1% difference matter? Again, TY for being so thorough and speaking for the true beginner, and never assuming that we "must already know" certain details that others leave out, that could kill us if we don't.

    • @IanCazabat
      @IanCazabat Рік тому +1

      Nope, the +/- is the tolerance of the measurement. So, 70+10 +/-5% = means the herm should be between 66.5-73.5 (which is +/- 3.5 or 5% of 70), and the fan should be between 9.5-10.5 (which is +/- .5 or 5% of 10).

    Not expecting a direct response but I have an odd issue.
    On a normally working system, when turned off for a while, the air handler will turn on and blow very hard without a call for cooling or heat.
    Comp and cond fan stay off
    It just blows super hard after being still at comfortable temperatures.

      You might have a thermostat with a fan setting set to "circulate." If you have this on, the indoor fan will come on every 15 minutes regardless if the outdoor condenser is running or not.

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Jeremy! What TK said might just be what it is. (thanks TKGotWings_!) Another thing you can look for is an air cycler control (I don't remember the specific name for it), typically located somewhere on the side of a duct, by the furnace/air handler. Some houses will have that thing installed and it basically does the same thing as that circulate option on the thermostat.

    I like the story at the end. Thank you for this. Did you use just a regular screwdriver? I believe my capacitor went out and my AC isn't cooling. It's miserable. Unit kicks on and buzzes for a few seconds then goes right back off. Its done this before a few times. I know I'm supposed to spray the outside of the AC unit with a hose, but we don't have any working faucets outside anymore.

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  2 роки тому +2

      Glad you liked the story! Yes, any regular screw driver or even a pair of pliers is all that is needed to discharge it. Sorry to hear about the AC problems, I've lived in toasty environments like that before so I know what it's like. Likely this has nothing to with spraying the unit down, from what you described it does sound like a bad capacitor. If you want to clean the outside coil, you could try brushing it and vacuuming it. It's not going to do as good of a job but if there is a bunch of stuff on that coil, you will still lessen the air restriction.

      Almost all modern dual run capacitors have an auto discharge mechanism so yeah very rare to get shocked by them or any HVAC capacitor. Just a couple of days ago I had an issue with a residential unit overamping and pulled the capacitor (which was a titan I had replaced about 6 months before) and the thing shocked me. They all do have built in dischargers so something was wrong with mine for sure but it hurt enough I will be more careful from now on!

    Should the capacitor be discharged by the motor coil once stopped or power off?
    The capacitor is in parallel to the motor coil technically in theory, unless the coil is broken.

    What HVAC manufacture would you recommend? I currently have an American Standard. It’s 27yrs old and been a great system. Wondering if American Standard/Trane is still the system to beat. Carrier? Bosch? Thanks for any advice.

    Question, if just changing the fan blade, maybe it's bent or cracked etc...motor is fine...after pulling out the fuse on the outside wall, do you have to shortout the capacitor, does that capacitor have enough juice in it to make that fan blade spin while taking it off the motor....

    Can i (generally, but fully) trust this process? The spade connectors on my wires don't have insulation on them, so i want to be sure i can discharge the capacitor and disconnect the wires AT THE CONNECTOR, and not by cowardly pulling at the wires themselves. Thanks!

    I would like to have seen a live/hot capacitor get discharged to see what kind of spark they make. How would i know if the capacitor is good/bad? Can you do another video?

    Could you make a video on unhooking a 250v ceiling fan capacitor and discharging it?

    Great video, your videos are so informative and easy to understand 🙌🏻👍🏻
    Do you need to discharge the capacitor before disconnecting it from the unit to replace with a new one ?
    Thank you 🙏

      Thank you, I'm glad to hear that the video are easy to understand.
      Preferably yes, discharge the capacitor every time before disconnecting any wires (power is off of course)

    Hello we have a gsx14 and it will trip the breaker after running for a good while. I've watched all your hvac videos and thanks so much for all the info you share with us. I've check all the components no shorts capacitor is within range and the inrush amps are good. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us.

    Thank you for this. I was wondering, can you discharge the capacitor by unplugging the HVAC unit, hooking the motor directly to the kill switch and pressing the kill switch to complete the circuit? (similar to testing the motor without the power being plugged in?) I do this all the time with electronics before I open them up and mess with them. Curious if this method would work with AC power as it does with DC. Thank you for your time

    Hi my friend how long take to change the Capacitor I have 18 years with them it’s okay to replace it for a new.?

    • @WordofAdviceTV

      Changing a capacitor is usually pretty easy. 5-10 minute job. Here is a video on how to replace it: ua-cam.com/video/9ZGfvC-PMWU/v-deo.html
      Personally, if it works well I would not change it. But it would be a good idea to order a spare capacitor just in case. I talk about that in the video above.

    Eak - at 6:16 your finger is on the shaft of the screwdriver as you demo the discharging! This is why folks should at least use a proper VDE screwdriver if they want to shortcut the discharging.

    If your screwdriver accidentally touches the body of capacitor will it ruin the capacitor or make it weak ?

  • @j-j-co

    Maybe if the capacitor is dead there wouldn’t be a spark (even slight). I just swapped out a cap here at home (first time doing it…pretty easy for sure). I shifted the wires from the old to new leaving the old still mounted in the cabinet. Then removed the metal strap from the old and finally affixed the new. The new one has a smaller diameter so fortunately, the metal strap has several holes. Lastly, I discharged the old cap. No fireworks 😢
    Kick on the A/C and back in business. Just for reference, the original cap was in operation for six years. Location is Indianapolis so the A/C gets used a bit throughout the summer.
    Lastly, suggest to buy American made caps from AmRad.
