I 100% agree. Men are demeaned so much these days in society. But most dads are awesome and love their children so much. My dad was a strong, hardworking, manly guy. But he was also very loving, taught my brothers and me discipline/respect, great example, and he treated my mom like a queen. Dad's are so important.

Interesting fact - America's Most Wanted aired Jim Burnside's case three times - the first time in July 1988, only five months after Annette's murder, all without success. And the actor that portrayed Jim on UM did the same on AMW.

I cannot imagine what it would feel to be separated from your baby girl. That must've been a nightmare. While they cannot get those lost years back, I hope they built a positive relationship from then on. You could tell mother and daughter bonded instantly.
@TenderPawsM.....I think the boyfriend and the dad are very much alike. She probably picked him for a boyfriend because he was like her dad. She didn't realize it but she probably spent her whole life trying to be close to her father and found him in the boyfriend.

But why? Oh, why? You have unprotected sex, your boyfriend ditches you, your father does not accept, so you give the baby away!! What's the fault of the baby in all this? Many people run after doctors to have one child, and here some just give away a precious god's gift 😭😭
''He looked like he was just about to enjoy a large steak'' As tragic and horrifying as this case was, that very line gets me every time. We all know that Jim Burnside spent the rest of his life in prison for the murder of Annette but reportedly, jail was not very kind to him. He died behind bars in 2015.
The John Novotny story got me...what a beautiful reunion. Excellent reminder that the little things we do each day really make a huge difference in the lives of others. Bravissimo
Annette's story is just heartbreaking..... I am grown man and it almost brings me to tears thinking about what this poor woman went through. On some level I think she knew she was in grave danger, but she just decided to put her kids in a safe place and try to maybe live as normal a life as possible for as long as possible. It just makes me sick to my stomach thinking about the fear and terror she must have felt in those final moments. At least she had the courage to try and make a run for it. I just don't understand how Jim Burnside did not get the death penalty.
If it was a plea deal and Jim pleaded no contest, it’s likely that’s why he got life. That guy was evil and selfish. The re-enactment from this story is always one I feel sobered watching.
What a filthy human being Burnside was. And although the mother sensed that something was wrong with Burnside, she didn't seem too bright. "I suppose it's God's will" (after this man threatened HER life to get revenge on his wife)?? It's good that she wanted the daughter out of the toxic marriage, but it's not "God's will" for the entire family to be in danger! Maybe, they all should have moved to another state and changed their names??

@@TF80s There's a lot of cases profiled on UM that will lead you down a rabbit hole. Jacob's cases is so heartbreaking. I'm happy his family was able to finally lay him to rest.
Wow. My husband is from that same small town (and his brother is about the same age) so this was a really personal case for him (I remember when the newer developments came about a few years ago). Seeing the poster is kind of chilling (especially out in a Nevada station). They also think the guy that did it had been driving around the neighborhood they grew up in spying on other kids as others recognized him after it all came out.
In the 80's and 90's families had to use Unsolved Mysteries to find lost family members. Today we have the internet and DNA! Sometimes progress is good!
I've watched Unsolved Mysteries ever since the 80's and was particularly fascinated by the "lost loves" section. My family of origin was very toxic, but I loved the idea of nice blood relatives waiting me for out there. This month my husband gave me a DNA test for a 13th wedding anniversary gift. I made a tree on Ancestry and added 450 relatives in the first week. The second week, I saw a picture of my great grandpa...so young and standing in a picture with a pretty bride I didn't recognize. Underneath, a caption with wedding date and a first wife, I didn't know about. I reached out to the owner of the picture. I found out there was a first wife and son in the family line. They filed physical abuse and cruelty charges against my great grandpa and won in court. There was a divorce, they left the toxic, and my then dysfunctional family of origin spent the next few generations ignoring their existence. This line of the family literally lives an hour away. My daughter and I just met them a few days ago. It was really great to connect! They had no idea that my great grandpa kept them a secret, they thought absolutely nobody wanted to know them! Well, I do.💞

I’m so frustrated with the story of Annette and Jim. If Annette knew and saw how dangerous he was, why the hell would she come back to Florida! She had a clean escape and he had no idea where she was. Annette gave Jim an easy way to find her. Sad.
I’m sure there’s other context behind the decision other than what we can readily see. She probably feared extensively for her parents who were also threatened by this guy, and felt it was unacceptable to have them possibly murdered and felt responsible if anything happened to them. On some level she probably knew she would end up dead by his hand.

I think most victims don't really think the perpetrator will kill them even the violent ones 30 years ago I threatened to divorce my husband and was filling out the papers at the time. He never indicated he would harm me. When I see stories about women being killed at this stage in the relationship, I feel it could have happened to me. My spouse was a drug addict. He died before the divorce was final. But I never thought he would harm either but I'm not so sure.

I can't believe that nobody on here made a comment about the man who's father left him and his mother alone and then went to that big brother place and he got a big brother and then was reunited with him after 20 years apart. I thought that was a great story too.
Patrick Maruniak one of my favorite lost loves stories. To have someone like that man in your life is a blessing. But I can see why the Burnside case overshadowed everything else.
That Delia story is terrifying. To think that outside authorities like parents and the church were able to exert such overwhelming control over a woman who was a legal adult. She even considered that she was giving up her child "unwillingly!" It's so hard to understand just a few generations later why she didn't assert her rights and walk right out of the situation.
40:38-41:27, one of the most satisfying update reenactments in UM. I loved how Burnside was still handcuffed against his truck even though the sheriff shot him twice, hopefully Burnside felt a lot of pain from those wounds.
AT the same time, women like Annette piss me off. Acting idiots all the time, marrying a douchbag, staying with a douchebag, doing exactly EVERYTHING you should NOT do while leaving a douchebag, not having ANY survival skills at all. I am not blaming the victim, I merely just say that when women keep acting exactly AGAINST all advice possible, they are gonna get killed. And yes, I am a woman myself.
Wow that cop pretty much said 'If a stalker wants to get you, he'll get you.' What a wonderfully defeatist attitude Mr. Law Enforcement. Great way to make victims feel good.
I would rather someone be honest about the situation than tell me something to "make me feel good" ... we need the facts so we can protect ourselves accordingly.
I don't think he was trying to make anyone feel defeated but at some point we have to empower ourselves with more than just calling the cops. They typically don't arrive until AFTER a crime is committed. Domestic situations are complex. No cops are watching victims 24/7. Those are facts. Cops got to follow the law. So if you have a person afraid to go to jail, a protective order might help you. But if you have someone that doesn't give a d*** about the cops, court, protective orders, etc , you have to decide to do something to help yourself. Protective orders are for the court room. Weapons and defense strategies are for your personal safety outside on the street. Just Facts.
@@CrustyUgg I would rather law enforcement solve the problem of stopping a stalker before the stalker gets to murder the victim. Police should be proactive, not reactive.

Because she was stupid! I mean she should be able to come and go as she pleases (everyone should), but she knew that she was dealing with a psycho. Therefore, take the necessary precautions.
I wonder i subconsciously she knew he'd find her somehow so just wanted to keep him away from their daughters. I agree it seemed a weird choice, but perhaps her mind was also just in denial about a lot of thngs. Then again I also question the fact that her parents let her drop out of school because she wasn't as popular as she was in their previous school (which among other things, limits her choices and makes her likely to have to be dependent on somebody else).
24:35 awkward is right....what happened is pretty easy to surmise: he had to make a delivery of frozen food in Las Vegas. He got the money for the shipment and had the bright idea to make some profit for himself by gambling with the money. He loses the money (big surprise), then decides to disappear and go underground, living on the streets. He probably thought he could find a job and get on his feet, but without an identity, Social Security, driver's license, etc. there is no chance of finding work. When being broke and staying in homeless shelters grew unbearable, he decides he wants to return to Boise, and somehow comes up with the bright idea to fake amnesia, hoping it will somehow absolve him of his stupidity. He couldn't say the shipment was hijacked, because he had made the delivery and gotten paid. If he had acted right away he maybe could have ditched the truck and claimed he was robbed, but he waited too long after ditching the truck, laying low, wandering the streets of Vegas, trying to figure out what the hell to do. When he finally hit his breaking point and decided to go home to mommy, all he could say is he lost his memory and had no idea what happened to the truck or the money. Dumbass.
Hopefully neither of you work in law enforcement. It doesn't matter what you think it matters what you can prove. Idiots like you folks are the reason why Americas Justice system has no justice anymore. Maybe you are right but since you have no proof you should include that in your statement. But nope you think you KNOW what happened with this complete stranger you don't even know. On the night of the broadcast, two viewers contacted the telecenter to report that Jim was living in Shelby County, Alabama, under the assumed name Al Wilson. He was working at a flea market at the time. The next morning, federal authorities arrived there. He noticed them and ran to his pickup truck. He pulled out a gun and began firing at them. They fired back and struck him twice. He was arrested and sent to a nearby hospital. Apparently, Jim had seen the broadcast as he told his coworkers the day he was arrested that he anticipated having problems that day. He was convicted of assaulting a federal officer and then returned to Florida. He pleaded no contest to Annette's murder and the attempted one of Dave. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He died there on November 27, 2015.

A tough episode to watch, because it included cases of two of the greatest male turds I ever saw on this show: Jim Burnside, the worst and sleaziest abuser this show EVER profiled, and that wretched half-a-coward of a Catholic father. I'm not sure who pisses me off more, after all this time.
You could have mentioned the bf too dude.... He abandoned her completely and threatened to say it was other men who got her pregnant....is he not a half coward either?? Just easy always to kick religion isn't it????
I don't know who is worse between the Catholic father / granddad or the sleazy boyfriend. Maybe, she slept with this guy because she wasn't getting affection at home.
Even though I guess it was kinda more common for young women to marry much older guys in the past, even for the 80s that seems way too creepy. He was possessive and controlling and violent, and it's just sad that by the time she left him it was too late
Where was ANYBODY?! Jesus christ, the mother even says she knew her daughter wasn't going "to make it". What kind of attitude is that? Stories like this are completely infuriating.
"How do you remember that if you have amnesia!" Fucking police intelligence right there. Barney Fife just solved the case! Makes me feel nice and safe.

My friend had a “big sister” through Big Brothers/Big Sisters who was older, maybe in her 50’s, and was more like a Big Auntie, but she had a piece of land, and horses, and was just so kind. I accompanied her to her ‘Big Sister’s’ a couple of times, and recently learned that woman passed away, and that her and my friend remained in contact over the past 30 years
I love it when we see good stories on here. Simply because this world does have some wonderful people in it. Not everyone is bad or has bad intentions out there in the world.
That first lady’s story is so sad. I just gave birth 2 months ago to a baby girl and I also have 3 boys and the thought of being forced to give any of them up is just unimaginable.
Segment 2: That guy faked his amnesia to get out of the legal trouble and other responsibilities. He was given 3 numbers from UM to call, his father, wife, and mother. He called his mother whom he was most likely to sucker. He never called the others. He refused to be reunited with his now ex-wife and children and remained in the Las Vegas area after serving his 90 days imprisonment in Boise. He had a heart attack in 2007 that left him in a vegetative state. This info is from his ex-wife who has posted in the comments for the original episode where this story aired.
Absolutely on point. His mother is most likely the reason he feigns illnesses. Always babying him. You see none of the other family showed up to be on the show cause they know his azz was lying. Especially his daddy. He just wanted to get out of that marriage and kids. Plus he got that money for that frozen food and trycked it off in Vegas. Absolutely Looney!
His estranged wife that he hasn't seen in 2 years? Who intends to hear from their spouse that they are estranged from? If he really did know her, of course he wouldn't want to talk to her, but if he didn't remember her (and I don't think he did) he likely figured there was a reason they'd been estranged for 2 years. And do you know him personally to know who would believe him? You know his mother and father? You realize that most people on general though when asked to pick between parents, usually choose their mothers. Since he grew up in a time where mother's were the prominent figures in their children's lives as they more often stated home to care for the children over fathers, he likely figured she'd know more about him.
Delia's father was a jerk, to put it mildly. Paul Beal, most likely, had either a severe breakdown or other stress induced amnesia episode. He did what he did, but without knowing details it isn't surprising that the show didn't delve into what cannot be proven. Jim Bearnside was a predator and what happened to Annette never should have happened. The fact he didn't do it again was a miracle, but it was only a matter of time so it is good he was finally caught.
Dave Arnold if Delias boyfriend will take the responsibility of his actions marry her nothing of this would it happened some parents are very moralist about these type of things it’s their ideas and how can you change the way of thinking of each person . People should take actions about their own mistakes
Paul beal tricked off his employer's money in Vegas. He called his mother because she is the one babying him. She even said he's made many mistakes but not anything criminal. Just keep making excuses for a grown ass man , married with children. His daddy didn't go down to that jail cause he already knew his azz was lying. Further research (Google) showed he didn't even want to reunite to get to know his wife. That dude got serious psychological issues and it's not amnesia. That officer told him a warrant was going to be issued for him and in 3 days ,so he knew he was in trouble. He made up that ruse. Sounds like a confused teenager when he don't want to do something but his mama seems to be a huge part of why he feigns illnesses.

I still can't help being angry with Annette's parents. I dare a 46 year old man to come sniffing around my teenage daughter and yet this mom is just like "well Annette loved him!!!".
It is amazing they didn’t put their foot down and gave into that “well she loved him”.
Or for that matter they put up with her quitting school.
At 17 she is legal in all states
If she wants to - she can.
I also don't think it's right but a lot of the commenters speak boldly about breaking the law to correct a moral a moral situation. The daughter was already messed up before she met the butcher or he would have never gotten to her.
He: Do you want to?
She: yes.
He: Are you legal?
She: yes.
He: let's party
Done deal.
I'm by no means taking up for predators, but the woman was the bringer of her own Doom.
* I won't be back so your comments won't be seen by me.
I agree with you but she was 18. They had no legal choices.
I know, really! It's even more upsetting as to what the hell she possibly saw in that ugly, old pedophile esc. creep, as it's not like he was some handsome, Brad Pitt, type supermodel, or anything like that!? She also didn't need to go back to him, and easily could have gotten the police involved when he made a clear threat to kill her family if she didn't allow them to be together once more, after he beat her, and initially forced her to seek refuge. That of which SHOULD of gotten him locked up way before he actually was after murdering her, when it was too late to have her life spared when there was still time to make that happen. Love is indeed as blind, and stupid as they say it is apparently too!
dont be an ageist. your child is not your possession. "my teenage daughter". if she loves that 46 yr old it is all cool. i hope your daughter finds an older man and they both shut you out of their lives due to your toxicity!
I met my big sister at age 10 she has given me so much confidence and her husband was also a great role model...best thing that ever happened to me!!
I cannot imagine what it would feel to be separated from your baby girl. That must've been a nightmare. While they cannot get those lost years back, I hope they built a positive relationship from then on. You could tell mother and daughter bonded instantly.
I can't decide who is worse, the granddad or the boyfriend.
@TenderPawsM.....I think the boyfriend and the dad are very much alike. She probably picked him for a boyfriend because he was like her dad. She didn't realize it but she probably spent her whole life trying to be close to her father and found him in the boyfriend.
@@tenderpawsm473 neither she has a right to choose, so should he to be a dad. Accidents happen but only one person gets a choice, that’s wrong. Also her dad would have to financially support both daughter and baby after ignoring his rules under his roof? I posted a comment a few years a go but I'm rewatching the series so I just remembered that I had found Laura's obituary and it didn't mention Delia. Made me sad because I assume they had a falling out after the reunion. I also remember when I searched them their Facebook's popped up and they weren't on private or anything so I was looking at their pictures and neither ever posted each other.
@@sassycat6487 That is so sad, after all that time to be finally reunited, and then to have a falling out. I guess there were too many years missed and the relationship suffered for it. Thanks for sharing this update though!

Polly Ester actually the mother from the UK was sex trafficker for a mob gang. After they met. Her daughter even though in her 20s was forced into prostitution. She was later rescued. 10 years later. A good cry is a healthy thing. Me, too! That was such a beautiful story. It was nice that Laura (Michelle) ended up with such loving adoptive parents.
But why? Oh, why?
You have unprotected sex, your boyfriend ditches you, your father does not accept, so you give the baby away!!
What's the fault of the baby in all this?
Many people run after doctors to have one child, and here some just give away a precious god's gift 😭😭
''He looked like he was just about to enjoy a large steak''
As tragic and horrifying as this case was, that very line gets me every time.
We all know that Jim Burnside spent the rest of his life in prison for the murder of Annette but reportedly, jail was not very kind to him.
He died behind bars in 2015.
Another mf who lived too long or, better yet, should never been even born, and whatever happened to him in jail wasn't enough.
The actor portraying Burnside deserved an Emmy he captured Burnside's evil abusive presence perfectly.
Looked like him a lot too
omg i wonder how many of these actors get the cops called on them becuase people watched this and thought they were the real people
The John Novotny story got me...what a beautiful reunion.
If I were Annette, Jim would have been on the receiving end of a gun...
Monte- some of my family didn’t want the death penalty on the table. My grandpa would have preferred that he was hung from a tree 😏
He should've gotten death even though he pleaded no contest.

It really is.
I prefer the Unsolved Mysteries method myself...much more entertaining.

The Big Brother story really got me into tears. Great story!
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sisters checked the blankets for notes like the one Delia hid because mothers before her had done the same.

Wow that cop pretty much said 'If a stalker wants to get you, he'll get you.' What a wonderfully defeatist attitude Mr. Law Enforcement. Great way to make victims feel good.
Yeah, I thought the same. What a lazy bureaucrat asshole.
No anymore, they don't have to do anything to get arrested or get a protection order, that's why they got these anti stalking laws

Dumbass.

When a person is telling lies their eyeballs frequently look all over the place instead of straight ahead.
The reunion in the first story happened the day before I was born
Very good acting.
Omg the nuns were so horrible to her they made her rake leaves!
Catholic Taliban.
@@MladenPostruznik , unfortunately, most likely.
@@reyez1000 Her father treated the pregnancy and the baby girl that came of it like a secret shame, the convent too stigmatising single mothers.
It’s amazing how us women always take up the slack, and step up to the challenge of being both mother and father!!!! WE WOMEN ROCK😊
not all women. some women drown their newborns in the toilet. funny how you ignore those ones. some PEOPLE step up and take up the slack. stop being sexist, it is pathetic and disgusting.
WWP (watching while pregnant) = who's chopping onions? on that first story. People were so cruel to unwed mothers back in the 60's.
Disgusting that people made such a big deal about whether or not you were married back then. Thankfully people aren't so closed minded these days.
All the onions here
@@bretthosmer6770 The thing is these most young people are unmarried and they don’t have kids and teens today are less likely to get pregnant
The first and last story had me in tears. So happy for these reunions.
I ugly cried, with the first one.
He looked so happy when the producers called and said they found his family 😂😂
30:09: Maybe the "something about him" was the fact that he was 45 and dating your 17 year-old daughter. What a creep!
@Jewel Clark, in Florida a person can marry at 17 without parental consent. There was literally nothing the mother could have done.
Yes. Currently they are trying to change it to be 18.
I never understand how there is real attraction with that difference in age.
Lauren Bacall married Bogart by the time she was 19 and he was 45 if I remember correctly, and they're one of the most celebrated couples in the world.
@@ams554 They married when she was 20!!!!!!!! ANd after 2 years of dating other people ie. Life experience.
The sweat streaming down Tyler’s face during the segment lol
I think John Novotony was a little weirded out by how emotional Jeff Fisher was to see him.
Cops can’t do anything until jim does something first
Kills his wife
Cops: 😮😮😮
RIP John Novotny who passed in 2014. What a sweetie pie. ❤
I'm so glad that he was able to find his BIG BROTHER.
Seeing that little baby girl, knowing that she'd have to give her up made me want to hold my own baby. I'd be so devastated that the one person a baby should trust the most has to give them up.
I'm not buying Paul's amnesia story. He was trying to beat those charges. Gurl bye 🤣🤣
Your comment has me wheezing lmao! Also, I couldn’t agree with you more. 😂😂😂
Absolutely. He conveniently developed "amnesia" when he was facing jail time for theft. 🙄
You think he threw his life away for a frozen meat shipment ?
Exactly..LMFAOOOOO 😂😂😂😂
I'm not so sure. Occam's Razor would suggest as much. But it doesn't add up to me. Maybe he was a spook? Even his mother looked like military. They looked alike but was she his real mother ? Seen that case twice now and something about it bugs me
