- This is the start of a new boat building project where I'll be building a 22ft Richard Woods Janus catamaran in my garage.
Some very (very!) kind people have asked how they can send a donation my way, so if you wanted to contribute to the catamaran build you can do it here...

Really like the design you’re going to build, once I finish my current boat, that will be my next boat to build, I look forward to seeing your progress mate,
And hopefully move back down to the central coast in the coming years
Thanks again mate and keep up the great work
Your boat name has meaning for you and that’s awesome
Yeeeeeew
good name, Skimmer
Thanks mate
Thanks, take me along on your build. Had a R. Woods Strider and loved it for 10 years. Best boat I ever owned. Your going to love Skimmer.
Good to hear from another woods owner/sailor. I can’t wait fir the first sail!
Skimmer is perfect, I just bought a trimaran named Koyote and I thought the exact thing about the radio.Good show mate
Thanks for putting this vid up, Aaron. All your reasons add up. I like all kinds of boats but the only ones I want to use are beachable and transportable. Skimmer should be easy to own and fun on the water - and have room for all your crew.
so excited cant wait
Looking forward to this!
Very cool, looking forward to your build.
Wow exciting news! Looking forward to seeing your build :)
Thanks mate!
I think you should call it Hugh
just do it!
I love my cat, it's a bit bigger than your Skimmer, it's a Wharram Tiki 38, and yes fast is fun.
Thanks mate, is Pilgrim your tiki 38 that sailing fast on some videos here on UA-cam?
@@Aaron.deRuiter yes, I bought it two years ago from the builder and renamed her Pilgrim's Way
I like the rationale. Those are the same reasons I'm refurbishing a Farrier TT720. Which can be rigged from the trailer and launched in less than an hour.
The farriers gave a great folding mechanism, no wonder you can get yours on the water so fast!
@@Aaron.deRuiter Yeah true, but I've yet to prove it on mine which needs new beam boxes. But i have watched and timed an F27 at 1hr 15 mins, pulling up at ramp to floating on pontoon ready to sail
Cool Aaron. Yeah. I have a couple of Richard's plans - the Duo tender and the 18' Chat. Still wondering if I will ever build.
I do recall that Richard did a pod for a mid sized cat he built. That was basically the same sort of space that his Wizzard has (although I'm not sure about the pop top/bottom.
Hav fun in the build.
Did you ever get round to building any Col? Yep, saw the cuddly cabin mod, definitely something to think about.
@@Aaron.deRuiter unfortunately not. Had some predictable health problems and when I got over them I could not convince my wife (who was a cat sailor when younger) that we needed to have a boating life. We got a camper instead. I did get her interested in the SUP and we do go paddling here in Coffs while‘enjoying’ this lockdown.
We did charter a lagoon 420 out of Airlie earlier in the year, and she did enjoy that. But there are plenty of the often told stories about boats in her family. I have only had good experiences on yachts, including Navy in the day. But she was part of a yacht delivery cruise for her Dad before I met her. Days of diesel fumes and going back on watch only to see the same lighthouse.
I’ll certainly be watching your build. As you probably know, there’s a video of a guy with a Janus launching and assembling one in SA on you tube. Polish chap I think.
Richard was really helpful with advice and GIS forum was the same. Haven’t looked at it for ages, but there was a lot of activity on it. Possibly, Brexit has slowed things down.
your next project should be a submarine. just so you can call it a g'sunder :D
great channel and great projects! and I like the name Skimmer!
Haha! I like it. I’m actually thinking of getting some Skimmer t-shirts made!
Subscribed, been considering building a Janus myself, also considering jarcat and spirited designs stowaway
Thanks for watching mate! I haven't heard of the stowaway before but it looks like a motorsailing cat so not going to have the best performance to windward but would have great accommodation for coastal cruising.
Looking forward to your build from the other side of the world! I really like that design. I’m considering a Wharram Tiki 21 build or newer Mana 24 and order the kit to save some time. The waters I sail here in Florida US are similar to yours, and the Bahamas are tantalizingly close. Catamarans in this size range tick off a lot of things on the list for a family with young kids that want to explore. Last 2 sloops I’ve had a huge are is given to the cabin, that nobody uses. Can’t wait to watch your build and sailing!
Mana 24 looks very good. Much more room than tiki 21.
Thanks Jonathan, I considered the Tiki 21 and also the Acorn 21 (also by Richard Woods) but both of those designs had their limitations for me. They both had only 2 berths and couldn't stretch out to 23ft as easy as the Janus. Sailing to the bahamas would be epic mate!
We will be down in Florida West Coast in April/May on Tiki 21 Beto if you want to get onboard for a sail and check it out
Skimmer is a great name but as you will know Submariners also call them 'Targets'. Looking forward to seeing the new build.
Yes, we sure did call them targets! But probably not a great boat name. Thanks for watching Matt.
When you bought the old boat, I thought that you will refurbish them... Personally I love CAT and I think you did a nice choose because it is not so big. Keep in mind: Big boat big cost.
Let´s keep tuned to follow your construction.
I live in Brazil and there is a couple constructing a huge cat. I don´t know they are adding subtitles in English.
You are talking about Fausto and Guta and your Guruçá Catamaran. But is a self made catamaran with own plans. No one can build another and it's very expensive too. For people who wants affordable cats Richard woods, James Wharran and Bernd Kohler is the way to go.
Thanks Jeferson, yep cats all the way!
So amazing what are you doing Aaron!., I'd like to build a little one to sail in a lake close to my home (Covis NM US). Could you recommend me a book or a course to do in order to learn sailboat woodworking? I believe this is what I want to do!!!! thanks!!
Thanks Gonzalo, I built my first boat after reading Gary Dierking's book... Building Outrigger Sailing Canoes. It's a great place to start!
Will there be some drawings from you on the last episode like your SUP?? :-)
There could be!
Great stuff. Why did you not fancy another trimaran? Or even a big er proa?
Thanks mate, I just like the arrangement of the catamaran with the safe wide decks so the kids have room to move around.
@@Aaron.deRuiter makes sense. Can't gon wrong with woods stuff, Conservative but tried and tried and tested..... I'll keep an eye on your journey. Good luck.
WHERE IS THE CAT
I’m building it! Stay tuned for the next episode.
