I had no interest in playing a Wizard, that is, until I heard about Scribes. I had a DM that would absolutely target your spell book and generally target your character's flavor, and that has kind of made me build characters that can survive the DM. Scribes is a Wizard that can survive that kind of DM.
One of my favorite parts about this subclass is that it actively encourages you to be the greediest wizard you can be. Between your quill's ability to copy spells in mere minutes, your desire for multiple damage types per level for you to alter your spells with, and the need for several "throwaway" spells you can sacrifice for your big "oh shit" ability, you are downright rewarded for stuffing your spellbook with as many spells as you can get your nerdy little hands on, regardless of how useful or even good those spells would usually be. Sure, every wizard dreams of getting every spell in the game, but no other subclass incentivizes you to do so quite like the Scribes Wizard. Granted, this does touch on the Scribe's biggest weakness, in that it's power level is almost entirely dm-dependant. You need to be playing with a dm that is actually willing to give you access to the spells and gold required to pad your spell list the way you like. That being said, if you find one that's willing to play ball with you, this subclass really lets you go wild
I've been playing a Scribes wizard for a year now and I really like being able to get around damage resistances. And my book's mind manifests as a spectral black cat made of ink with white eyes.
Scribe Wizards are the most fun, even if they're just changing damage types. But when you're a Spell Attacker, you can change things into mostly Bludgeoning-type, and Piercing and Slashing for a Wizard who took Crusher, Piercer, & Slashing. Slap on three levels into Sorcerer of your choice and Metamagic Adept and bam! Seeking Spells like homing Missiles.
I had a concept for a Scribe wizard once using the Charlatan background. He specialized in forging documents. I mean, you have a magic quill with infinite ink and writes in any color you want (including in some Royals favorite Blue color, or a Regals Red). Not to mention, if you are able to copy a spell that normally takes hours, but you do it in minutes, imagine how fast you can copy/forge documents. Rogue: *Brings stack of stolen documents to the forger* "Forger! I need these documents copied with myself and my crew as the sole heirs, and I need them ready by tomorrow night!" Forger: "Hm, 20 pages, all in specialized colored ink." Rogue: "Well, can you do it or not?" Forger: "Oh, I can, but it'll cost you." Rogue: "Name your price." Forger: "100 gold" *rogue tossing coin pouch on the table* "Per page." Rogue: *heaves a chest of gold onto the table* "There! Remember, I need this done by..." Forger: "All done" Rogue: "Well... that was fast." Forger: "Pleasure doing business." *Snaps fingers as rogue and forged documents are shunted out of the shop."
As the price of learning spells doesnt change but the time shrinks, we can discern the info that the money in this subclass goes to the cocaine required to write and learn the spells this quickly
Scribe wizard is definitely the class that makes me want to make a full a wizard in a campaign. It and illusion wizard are definitely the most fun to me
If the world of DnD _was real_ and not a game that is *carefully balanced* to make it "fair," then Scribes Wizard would be the best and safest class. DM's generally won't steal or destroy your spellbook because it's such a disaster, and it completely nerfs the players' Wizard character. *But life is not like that.* Every other Wizard subclass must be paranoid every time they sleep and are terrified of theft. There would be specialists rogues that target spellbooks, either to resell to Wizards who don't have those spells or for commission to take down a rival. Don't like a particular Wizard - Hire "that guy" to really take down their power level, even a Bladesinger would be in trouble if their spellbook disappeared or was destroyed out of combat. And of course, there's always targeting an enemy Wizards spellbook in combat.... As a Wizard need to drop everything and run? Well, your spellbook effectively has hidden cloud storage backup. Now, being captured and having all your possessions taken isn't such a disaster to your magical career. This is especially useful with the Clone spell. For other Wizards unless you want to go to the _expense_ and time of creating a complete copy of your spellbook and leaving it next to your Clone jar (and what about new spells learnt since then?), coming back from the dead might still be very detrimental to your health. Imagine you had problems with a (non scribes) Wizard? It's the most obvious but effective move that doesn't include murder... Until they're now weak enough to be killed. *Wizard horror story:* Your spellbook is gone.
Fabricate solves the time issue of copying a spellbook. The gold cost remains, however. Note that wizards do not need calligraphy proficiency to transcribe spells, and in fact gain no benefit from it, so the rule about high-craftsmanship items does not apply. You are "proficient" in transcribing spells just by being a wizard.
Character idea : a dragon born who idealized dragons hording things and desided to make there lifes mission to hord every spell ever , think kinda like orochimaru wanting to learn every justsu
I really like this one. Being able to swap in another spell's damage type is particularly appealing, being even better than ignoring elemental resistances since you can actually capitalize on weaknesses too.
On top of that, being able to cast from your spell book's manifestation is great too. Imagine you're in an Anti-Magic Field and you manifest you summon the manifestation outside of the field, then cast Dispel Magic from there. Boom, no more Anti-Magic Field.
Because it's so quick and easy to copy new spells into your spellbook, having a whole bunch of _pointless spells_ in your book to temporarily "burn" for *One With the Word* with at most 18 levels of spells that you don't care about being unavailable for up to a week. All those spells you never use, they're now an insurance policy. So any spell you don't have has a potential use, and considering you can copy a 9 level spell in 18 minutes, taking a short rest gives you the opportunity to copy 30 levels worth of spells from another Wizards book. Go for the entire Wizard spell table......
If only it cut the cost of copying as dramatically. This is my favorite wizard subclass but it feels the weight of those wizard student loans like no other.
A while back, I finished a campaign with a Scribe Wizard/Tempest Cleric. His signature move was a maximized Lightning Bolt from his spellbook. And goddamn did it hit like a TRUCK.
I really like casting spells directly from the book like a fire emblem mage, that specific visual/fantasy has beeen in my mind since I was like 11 and I've always loved it.

LOOK! After reading the Eragon books and then watching the movie was a small agony. They literally kill two things that serve as a MAJOR plot point later in the story. And completely screw up the relationships that really matter. And then the sequence where Saphira just.... GROWS UP IN 10 SECONDS INSIDE A DAMN BLUE LIGHTING CLOUD! It was an unpleasant experience.
This was my all-time favorite book series growing up and I watched this movie as a birthday present to myself. Normally I am a pretty calm person but I was yelling at the screen and throwing popcorn this day.
Man I love combining spells. Its just such a cool concept even if its only changing damage types. Fireball is boring fire, but scribes can make it actually cool!
bugbear. 3 levels scribes, 5 levels wildfire, 6 levels alchemist or artillerist, 6 levels djinni. elemental mastery and metamagic adept. you now have plus 3d8 or 2d8 plus int on every fire spell down to cantrips and can make that eldrich blast into 4 fire darts of death.. along with everything from catapult to scorching ray getting those bonuses. could sub out artillerist or draconic and not lose much. hits for like 12d10 plus 24d6, plus 24 and 50.. through resistance. you are now the pyro of pyros.
As someone graduating with a Masters in Library and Information Science in the next three weeks with a specialization in archiving manuscripts and special collections...I have never felt more seen by a D&D subclass 😅
It's remarkable how much from the Lore wizard actually got translated over to the Scribe wizard. It'll, obviously, never *be* the Lore wizard, my beloved Lore wizard... but, honestly, it's *much* lower maintenance and much more tactically versatile. Best wizard. Honestly, *this* is the wizard that oughta be in the PHB. It's the wizard of wizards.
Anyone know why there was an editing error at 0:06? I think there is suppose to be an image but its just a black box (Incase anyone is wondering this is a joke. We dont talk about the Eragon movie or acknowledge its existence)
A useful misdirection for Awakened Mind is to make it look like a ghostly figure; a spectre, a spirit, a spirit guardian!.... or a ghost of an animal. Something that doesn't scream Wizard Spellbook, but looks like it could scream.
I know this is a great wizard wizard, but scribe mix with a fighter as Triton gives you a wall of water and frost wave to make an ice cage they are stuck inside with you.
I once ran a Barb/Scribes Wizard, Goliath who held a vendetta against other wizards and learned magic specifically to take them down and steal their spells. So unhinged
I saw artwork, of a dwarf with a HUGE scroll slung under her shoulder and I had to think Could a Scribes Wizard write magic missile a thousand times on 1 scroll basically making a magic machine gun
@@marcusblacknell-andrews1783 if you're only going to do the three levels necessary then I recommend fathomless warlock as the feature it gives you is basically just a better spiritual weapon with no spell slot requirement. And considering wizards struggle to find uses for their bonus action outside of flaming sphere, or the telekinetic feat it's a great pick. Taking only three levels will also make sure that you don't miss out on 9th level spells AKA wish, while also giving you two second level slots that refresh on short rests so you can be a bit more frugal with your spells at that level. Oh- And the tentacle slows creatures 10ft so it's great to combo with aoe effects like the black tentacles spell (to perfectly matche theme). Or even just as a great use to keep beefy melee combatants off of you. 👌🏽
@@marcusblacknell-andrews1783 that is a good one, but personally I feel like since there are so many ways to get temp hp (armor of agathys 👍🏽) or to cause fear that I'd rather go for something that wizards otherwise don't get as easily. The immunity is nice though.

With Master Scrivener add Cartomancer and you have two open spell selections per day.
Emerald Quill magic item!
"As a heavy steel strapped oaken chest levitates on an invisible platform a tiny imp and it's homunculus look-alike load it with the pieces of loot... errr of a precious artifacts, and some unseen force is loading larger items of value. Meanwhile, a dusty and ink stained gnome intently studies the carvings around the ornate ruins, marking it all to memory for recording later. Hovering over this scene are a pair of glowing, eye like orbs keeping watch for anything that should approach.
Oh how the gnome wishes they had a real fully equipped expedition with them, so these excursions could last more than an hour in the dark and under constant risk of violent encounters. They could write their notes on site, with time to translate texts more properly. This is what all that training was for after all."
1/8 cost and 1/32 time of producing Common/Uncommon Scrolls. 1/4 cost and 1/8 time of other scrolls. 1/2 cost and 1/4 time on other Common/Uncommon magic items.

Love th ability to mesh spells together
My main dnd character rn is a scribes wizard:)
Man I love combining spells. Its just such a cool concept even if its only changing damage types. Fireball is boring fire, but scribes can make it actually cool!
The nerdiest wizard subclass and a bit underrated. You can do some magical shenanigans.
From the title, I thought a Scribes Wizard was someone who could make whatever they write down happen in the real world
As always great content, you are my favorite DnD creator! keep it going!
pair this with the tempest cleric subclass and the elemental adept (lightning) feat and you are now your party's favorite DPS
Man, these videos never disappoint
Woot!!! Thank you very much for the video.
Okay lol so that dwarf picture you used that was smoking a Cigar hunched over is the art I used for my dwarf wizard!!!!!! 😂❤️❤️
Love seeing my favorite subclass
Ah yes, the Frieren subclass..
Anyone else considering creating clippy as their awakened spell book form.
Anyone know why there was an editing error at 0:06? I think there is suppose to be an image but its just a black box
(Incase anyone is wondering this is a joke.
Just use a deck as spellbook, cards as scrolls to send your enemies to the shadow realm
My Scribe Wizard tattooed his spells on his skin. So, I shed dim light at one point lol
Now imagine if you will, taking pulse wave and turning that fireball into a concussive blast
I made a Battlesmith/ Scribe wizard with Magic initiate for Find familiar, and summon spells to become a pokemon trainer
The ad ends at 3:03
King
I know this is a great wizard wizard, but scribe mix with a fighter as Triton gives you a wall of water and frost wave to make an ice cage they are stuck inside with you.
Hats of to you Jesse!!
When all you wanna do is double down on being a Wizard rather than choose a gimmick.
Scribes is awesome as now when you are inside a resilient sphere you can still cast outside it with your book. 😆😁🤣
I once ran a Barb/Scribes Wizard, Goliath who held a vendetta against other wizards and learned magic specifically to take them down and steal their spells. So unhinged
I'll be waiting for the War Magic wizard to show up🔥
Another amazing video. Keep it up.
I have an idea for a Scribe/Gunslinger whose spell book is a deck of playing cards and his wizardly quill is a fountain pen.
Yesssss finally my favourite subclass I’m too stupid to play right
My favorite wizard 🧙♂️
This is indeed a true wizard.
please can we get a video on the swarmkeeper!
If I multi class Artificer Armorer with Scribes Wizard can I use my armor as a spellbook?
I saw artwork, of a dwarf with a HUGE scroll slung under her shoulder and I had to think
Could a Scribes Wizard write magic missile a thousand times on 1 scroll basically making a magic machine gun
Congrats. You are now Lantry.
Perfection!
Sorcerers: Yeah, but you can still only cast one spell a turn.
Hope oathbreaker paladin makes the poll.
Crazy Idea: What if you gave a “Scribes” Wizard the “Eldritch Adept” feat to gain the “Book of Ancient Secrets” Invocation?
Unless you are at least three levels in warlock you can't take that invocation as it requires Pact of the Tome
@@ImpaleTheLiving, then perhaps, a multiclass is in order?
@@ImpaleTheLiving, in my opinion, I’d rather use the Undead Warlock from Ravenloft, but that’s just me though.
@@marcusblacknell-andrews1783 that is a good one, but personally I feel like since there are so many ways to get temp hp (armor of agathys 👍🏽) or to cause fear that I'd rather go for something that wizards otherwise don't get as easily. The immunity is nice though.
