DIY how to aquarium fish tank automatic water changes
Built a system nearly identical to this a few years back. Works great. Opted out of a safety float switch... bad idea lol the overflow failed from a siphon break and thhe water took a secondary route. Over the edge of the tank lol. Also, hard pipe EVERYTHING. Clear tubing gums up and sometimes kinks.
How does that overflow work? And I don't understand the way that he has that pump tied into that overflow

only issue I could see is your sg creeping up due to evaporation. so keep your freshly made saltwater bucket with a slightly lower sg to compensate for the difference if you run it continously. nice build.
my current diy is an ato with high water shut off to skimmer and return pump and float valve.
then building a automatic weekly water change. mainly a relay system with a 24 hour electronic timer. my goal is to just add salt and dump waste water.
Nice. Only one question... How do you compensate for evaporation? On a saltwater tank, the water that evaporated needs to be replaced by fresh water.
Wow! I love the fact that you can do diy for aquariums. Love your ideas and your explanations are on point. I am on the roll now! starting with the filter system cause I hate these filter system with to much water pressure flow into my tank which my fish don't like, but love the bubbles instead. Nice!
Another great job there Joey. I have a suggestion that may just take this concept to another level. On the input side of your system, consider getting a really cheap dehumidifier with an optional external output. It will take the moisture out of the air, pump it into the tank, where your overflow system can now maintain the tank water level. The dehumidifier will most likely contain some optional settings that will allow you to control how long it runs. I have been wanting to send this info to you for some time now. It would be worth a video to walk folks through and I think it will really help anyone who has a large number of tanks inside the home to prevent rot or moisture damage.
Thanks please continue to evolve this project it is a great start. How would it be using your overflow system where you would have it pump out x amount of water first (some kind of float switch to control how much get pumped out) and then have it pump in new water when completed to ensure that you are always getting the old water out first and clean water is not being drained with the old water? Not to complicate things but under the sand you could have a simple pluming system that would stir the sand and move detritus out by water injection right before this would all begin. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,

Interesting to show the concept as an alternative to (e.g.) a Reef Filler/ChemTech pump or the the more-elaborate commercial systems used on bigger tanks! (I'd think this would be worthwhile on anything around 10 gallons or less.)
(Need for the Aqualifter indicates the same design issue as the CPR overflow, FYI. Plumbing needs to be in scale with the flow.)

Awesome build, but wouldn't it present a problem if the supply container went dry and the auto shut off only turned off the supply pump? I would think the prime pump on the overflow would still come on and continue to drain water until the timer shut off. Maybe connecting the prime pump to the auto shut off switch in the supply container or adding an additional auto shut off switch in the supply container would correct the issue. Keep up the builds love the show.

Funny this is pretty much the system I had before I ran mine from my toilet water supply line through a 3stage chloramine carbon block drip to the tank then a continuous siphon weir on the other side draining to plants outside...they are great systems thanks joey its really just the same thing as how a toilet works

That's a good setup but what about us Reefers who already have an overflow and sump? Can you demo how it would work on that system?
Would you recommend a undergravel air pump in a saltwater tank looking to start a saltwater reef tank and heard this could be a good idea! Since the fish waste food and everything else sits in the gravel and the only time I would mess with that is a water change!

I like this because I was wondering about the safety of city water. I would do this because I can use RO water. I would just get a 5 gallon jug and weekly put it in the suction uptake.
One day I need to make a review of my fully automated continuous water change system. No electronics at all and less bulky :). Changes water one drop at the time.
One small problem though, gas in the water during winter time makes it stop, so I need to restart it. Would be fixed with a small hand pump, like the fuel pumps they have for small boat motors. One press and it would remove the air.
hi joey i want to ask a question about moving bed filters.how can we make it by using internal filter,inside the tank?how can we make it without using air pump?i mean can we put media front of the internal filter?(the way is:water flows in the internal filter and flows out,then flows into the media which we put front of the internal filter)

Yes. The common description is freshwater sole, or freshwater flounder, but it is actually a brackish water fish.

Joey can you show us how to make an aqualifter pump?? It costs too much and I cant afford it
just thinking if you did have a water source. like you did with your drip system and add a carbon filter (like the ones you would use on veggie gardens, connects to hose) Then use a 24v irrigation solenoid value ( about $12.00) wired into a 24v transformer (about $12.00) And plug that into a timer. Or cut one wire of transformer and splice in a float switch. So that when water level drops the float switch makes a complete circuit and turns on the solenoid value and water drips back in at 1 or more gallons per hour.(drip emitter) And when water level reaches the float switch it disconnects the circuit turning off the solenoid. thus stopping the water. And then just add a submersible pump with a timer say worked out to pump out 5 gallons a day into septic or sewer thru your washing machine hook up or water softener's 1/2" overflow line going to your septic or 5gal bucket (bucket water for your garden) Would this not make for a good auto water changer and auto top off combine? I would like to see you work this out DIY KING and post another video. what do you think?
Way to step up to the challenge Joey! When you made the over flow pipe drain, did you use pvc glue? Or is it because it comes out at a slow flow that you dont need it? Thanks

Im building a automatic waterchanger thingy in my appartment, using some of ur builds but using 2x25 liters buckets for the watersupplay and overflow, do u think it will give enough throughput?
I have something similar, I use gravity to bring fresh water into the tank. One bucket is above the tank and hose draining into the tank. I adjusted the flow with a (cannot think of what it is called) find them on IV bags in hospitals. I have the overflow going into the second bucket.
Would the overflow still work if I piped it directly to a drain? Or would I need to pump it to the drain?
Why wouldn't you just use a doser and take a few litres out a day depending on how much of a water change you done every week? I personally do 50-75 litres a week and have been thinking of doing it with a doser. Is there any down side to doing it like this? I'm not a big fan of having equipment everywhere I like for my tank and sump to look nice and tidy.

Hi Sir, I am planning to have 70 galon tank with 250 g/ph capacity canister filter. Q1: Do you suggest me to add a UG filter also in it? Q2) I have a flower horn in it and in future I am planning to have Arwana, or Stingray, or Oscar, or discuss. please suggest gravel is better or sand?
if you're going to keep anything bigger, you need a bigger tank. I'd say stay with just the flowehorn if you're only dealing with 250gph...

Can you set this up as a drip system? Would it work to leave the pump on, restricted by a drip valve, and time it to see how long it takes for the water to get, say, an inch over the outflow and then cycle the outflow primer pump?

What should i do if i can drive a drip system but there is no possibility to get rid if the old water below the aquarium rack. How do i manage it with a pump or something?

How simple and safe could this system be made for a freshwater aquarium if I have a water line that I can run to a drain and I have a water supply coming piped in from safe well water? Can I make this system with no buckets? The Overflow water would be able to flow straight into a drain, and the fill water would be coming from a plumbing pipe at house Plumbing pressure?
For the removal of the old water you're gonna have to use a submersible pump or a powerhead directly discharging to the drain, use a 110/220V relay controlled by 5/12V connected to a float switch set upside down so it would turn off when placed 75% from the top surface of your aquarium.
For the top off, use a solenoid valve coupled to your tap and again use a float switch placed right side up to the max water level you want so it would switch off once it reaches the level.
There's the concept. Be creative and good luck with your project. 😊

....Or maybe (added to my comment a few minutes ago)... simply use a 40g trash can full of treated water as your water source and fill it every few days. A system straight from my water supply sure would be fun to try, though. I am still curious what a safe level/% of untreated water would be?!?

How do you calculate the salinity of added water ? U are adding salt water to the tank, it overflows into sink. But we also have water evaporation, where salt stays in tank. With current setup we cant have top off fresh water. So in this case salt will be constantly rising if we add salt water same salinity as tank. So we need lower salinity, how is that calculated ?

You are correct, the salinity of your new water should be slightly below your tank salinity. If you have the same salinity and are NOT topping off with RODI water occasionally, you are slowly adding in more and more salt, because water evaporates without salt. EDIT: lol old post, sorry
I’ve got a float valve in my sump that has a feed of fresh RO to continuous drip for evaporation. With this technique, adding 2 gallons of water daily to the sump will raise the level and push 2 gallons out the overflow, then the float valve is right back in play for the other 23 hours and 45 minutes daily. I haven’t put this in practice yet, but I will tomorrow. Everything mentioned in the video to accomplish this was already sitting in my garage. I’ll keep daily checks on salinity.
How are you keeping the fish from going out the overflow especially small fry ?????
You could attach a media filter sock over the overflow pipe. Probably the cheapest and easiest way.

Seems to me that you could connect the system to your house's water supply with something that limits it the flow to only the number of gallons would want to change per day. Say, 15% of your aquarium. Then connect the outlet/overflow to your house's sewer/waste piping; where your toilets and sinks empty. I would think your tank heaters would be able to keep up the temperature. My only sticking point would be the some sort of dechlorination, but I would imagine 15% of the water with may be okay. Maybe 10%? Joey, is there a safe level/% of untreated water you could add to an aquarium?

only problem I can see with this setup is if u have a sump. The sump would take the extra water before it would go over into the other bucket.

I give a neg star on this video. He went thru everything so fast I had to watch it over more than I wanted. Was this one of the let do a 5 min vid that helps no one?
I would have thought slowly mixing in fresh water with the current water and taking off the overflow would be less effective than removing n litres of used water and replacing it it with n litres of fresh. That's what I've found doing small daily changes and weekly bulk changes anyhow. I guess if you went crazy with this you could have a system that drains water out and dumps it into the drain and then slowly refills it from the water supply. If only sensors to detect the various "don't wants" in water were cheap/available. Then you could have a system that knows when it should do changes too.
By setting the overflow to the right height inside the tank, you could remove n liters/gallons of water. You put the pump that primes the overflow on its own timer, and run it maybe 20 minutes before the pump that adds water to the tank. If the overflow becomes unprimed when the pump connected to it turns off, then you will have a system that removes n liters/gallons of water, then replaces n liters/gallons of water.
