Both better. Than EV! My Skoda vrs diesel has done a faultless 75k miles in two years. And it’s quick. If you do the miles then a diesel is fine.

2014 Insignia Diesel - averaged 66mpg - long runs pipping 80. Good low down torque, all depends what you want the car for. I always steered clear of diesel until 2009 - bought a 2008 diesel Vectra SRI - FAR superior to the petrol Vectra equivalent. Never been back to petrol.

I drove low capacity (550 cc) Honda vans , for years, with good mpg, and unbeatable reliability. Now driving 1.4 litre diesel non turbo truck. Little bit more power then the petrol, 37bhp as opposed to 31 bhp max, more torque, similar fuel consumption.

It depends what you man with "best".... For hauling around a car litteraly big as a small house with a trailer same size, diesel... If you are running a 1000kg 2 seater sport car and want it to be quick and silent running then gasoline is "best".

Drove 3 litre diesels for the last 25 years, now my petrol hybrid gives as good if not better mpg and performance.

I think that if you factor into consideration such things as blocked DPF's and knackered injectors, combined with the odd seized glow plug or two and the guy probably does have a point, Petrol may just eek out any advantages Diesel has to offer, BUT..........on the flip side, you may have none of these problems with a Diesel. Despite having forked out for replacement injectors on one of my previous cars, I still would take my chances with Diesel over Petrol as, in the real world, the modern Diesel performs better.
There is more real world performance offered with Diesel thanks to higher torque outputs at lower rpm's than petrol = greater/safer overtaking capability. So, it's Diesel for me i'm afraid.

That ingenium engine has to be one of the worst engines ever built ,,, the only thing land rover got right was the marketing.

Petrol doesn't have the same mpg as diesel these days, unsure where he got that notion. Perhaps with hybridization, which adds to expense.

I agree, he’s totally wrong about the mpg’s being the same. Doing the job he does he won’t be doing much mileage so has no experience in long distance driving mpg’s

If diesel was by far the majority I'd go with it just for an easy life.
As things are, I'd leave it alone.

Diesel never really caught on in passenger cars in the US, thanks in no small part to the GM diesel disaster of the late '70's - early '80s. There isn't much of it in Japan, either. Europe's love affair with diesel has proven a double-edged sword. And today's DPF business is just one big headache.

Perfectly sensible. The French make the best diesel engine for cars. For the others, gasoline is often better

Diesel, works great in ships, trains, plant equipment, tractors vans ect. Sounds like a set of spanners in a car, and no better in a high end car.

Nothing wrong with old diesel with no PDF filter...
I average 47 mpg on my 1,9 diesel estate, there is no way any petrol would come close to that!

Except the noise and black smoke are not that pleasant, to say the least.

Small engine petrol cars can get that mpg too. I'm talking about the simple 1.0-1.6L engines without any turbocharging or whatever
