MUTABLE INSTRUMENTS BRAIDS - Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 чер 2024
- I'd always assumed that Mutable Instruments Braids was just an older and not-as-good version of Plaits. Actually, it's a very different and independent module (with some overlap), and I like it a lot. Is it better than Plaits? Watch to find out :D

Love Braids, it will never be obsolete. Look at that green digit display! ^^
I looove the display!
Holy cripes, I was literally JUST looking up some Braids videos for inspo with my Blue Lantern clone, and I run across this 30 minutes post-upload!
You're a saint, Ali.
Haha perfect timing! Just finished filming parts 2 & 3 too :D
@@TheUnperson I legit cannot stop coming back to that Comb mode demo - some big dirtnasty jungle potential there. Neeeed more. 🫠
don't think I ever bothered to watch a video about braids because its was already "obsolete" when I started on my full dive into modular journey in 2020. its pretty impressive compared to plaits. now its going to become more expensive after more people see this video. great video!
Needless to say, lots of clones still available, plus VCV.
I think I got mine in 2021 and for some reason I still prefer it over Plaits in many cases.
I picked an OG braids up for 190 quid on eBay ~ such a bargain for such a cool module :)
Lovely use of Braids. It does so much.
between the accent and the music, you've got a good thing going on here. kudos to using the TE as a real instrument and not just cartoon sound effects.
This sync jam is epic. 15:53
You're an incredible synthesist, and I love your explorations in a major way
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying the vids ☺️
This video demonstrates that no matter what digital osc goes through an analog filter, it will sound great! I used to have a braids some years ago, I sold it because I could appreciate only its VA oscillators so I got myself some real analog ones. Great video as usual BTW.
Cheers man! Yea analogue filters can make any sound source sing!
I really like the chords in Braid. Especially used with quantizing or not. I started using them with a livelooper and it's great for drones when used with reverb.
I haven’t tried the quantiser yet! Gonna get on that :)
I always use the trig, but without sounds just lovely. Love your approach to the modules. Really inspiring
Thank you! I wasn’t using the trig too often, tho did use it for the physical modelling modes coming up in the next vid :)
Great video, as always. Braids were a HUGE deal in the first wave of Mutable modules, but I get why people think it is "first Plaits minus one". Btw, just for the clarity sake, that C Saw algo, that is, as you rightfully mentioned is an homage to CS80, is basically a shark fin saw (if you look at the oscilloscope) and it is beautiful for plucky bass that you have patched at the start of the video.
Yea I feel like Braids was really ahead of it’s time! Still a powerhouse all these years later. Thanks for info on the CSAW algo!
Great braids refresher! I’ve got a maths n a og braids spare for the palette. Might get this going.
Maths and a Braids is a perfect combo!!
Nice! Everything always sounds so good with you! Do you have any mastering or any kind of post prod to improve the sound, or are you just good at making things sound amazing?
Thanks! I do some post production in Ableton, but nothing much. I did make a video showing the post editing in Ableton for patreon if you want a closer look :)
You should do a series about braids. It still has relevance because of the numerous clones out there. TallDog, Michigan Synth Works, CalSynth, etc. They still offer this module, so it is still alive and well.
One of the best modules ever. Excellent video as always.
What kind of case are you using @theUnperson
Thank you!
A friend of mine built the case using old floor boards :D
@@TheUnperson nice. I just built a case from someones old discarded cabinets. Doesnt look anywhere near as nice as yours tho lol
Nice to see Braids get some love. I only have two osc modules in my system - an OG and a DIY. Don’t have a massive need for an analogue osc as these are so fat. Output on the original seems a little hotter but otherwise they are interchangeable to my ears. Original is more pleasing to look at though :)
Got both a Plaits and Braids in my rig, though the Braids is a DIY 12-bit DAC version. They both have their use for me; Braids for sounds that are more well-established in the larger language of electronic music (supersaws, acid lines, FM, formant sounds) and Plaits for more contemporary sound design. I'm not saying that's only where they shine though, even after having both for a couple years I still keep learning more and more about them! Great video, convincing me to build a couple more of both ;)
It’s great that the modules are so deep that we can still learn new things about them after all this time. Gonna check out some of the Braids alt firmwares next!
I have both a Plaits and 2x of the diy Braids. Even with that 12 bit dac they are awesome.
Nice man! You must be getting some epic oscillators with those 3!!
Congrats on snagging an OG Braids. This is giving me bad GAS for this.
I am dying for you to do a tides v2 video one day.....
I had a tides v1 back in the day but I think I didn’t really understand how to use it back then. Maybe one day I’ll snag a V2!
@@TheUnpersonv2 is much more intuitive. V1 is strange
i just bought a second Braids, this one with Renaissance firmware. any thoughts on the two versions?
Good old braids!
Best clickbait ever.
Could you please help how to see in Braids which firmware version I currently have installed?
I've always liked both, but in VCV there are a couple of Plaits clones which are polyphonic (Pallete and Surge XT Twist) which makes it a lot more versatile. Sadly, there isn't a poly Braids yet, but that would be awesome.
Ohhh I’m gonna have to try the poly plaits ~ that sounds fun!!
There is 2 great alternative firmware for braids as well. Bees in the trees and Renaissance. Very easy to load them. Try them out.
Around 16:20 - Super! Would love to hear album no. 2 soon...?
I’d love to release an album soon too 😅
You should think about installing the Renaissance firmware - the SAM speech modes are great
Luckily my Disting EX can do both. But I do regret selling my Braids to get my Plaits. Braids had some cool modes if you installed the aftermarket firmware.
Ohhh I haven’t tried the alt firmwares ~ gonna check that out now!
I thought the alt firmware was more about envelopes and quantization and such?
You can make a _potato_ sound good!
But no really, I do think Braids sounds beefier than Plaits. It's probably the output stage that has a grittier sound, rather than the algorithms themselves. Never heard anyone do a back-to-back comparison for the common algos, but that was my impression after having owned Plaits for 5 years.
I’m gonna give it a try ~ braid’s definitely sounds beefy but I’ve never A/B’d them.
I think she even said the sound engine was improved from Braids. Makes sense.
BRAIDS4LYF
Do you have a filter in that rack ?
uVCF next to braids.
That’s correct, the Intellijel uVCF :)
add traffic and use meta mode and you will have a nice little drum machine ;-)
I’d forgotten about meta mode.
Is Traffic an alt firmware?
It is a module from jasmin and olive trees also in vcv rack it can more or less turn plaits in a drum machine @@TheUnperson
@@TheUnperson i thought you had traffic module in your collection, yeah check it out it's great.
traffic is such a fun module. loving hotel mode. bit like pet rock on steroids
Bit of an odd choice how you patched your stereo data bender singal into beads there 😉
It’s actually verrry clever and unique patching technique 😅
@@TheUnperson Chaotic modulation source i see :)
lol, good catch
Luv me braids
Simple as
Personally i prefere Braids.. maybe because i have some nice alt firmware installed :0
Is it the renaissance one you’ve got? I haven’t tried the alts out yet
come on! make time go faster! lol( 28 min until it drops)
Haha you were by far the earliest here :D
Heck ya! Your channel has become a staple in my UA-cam viewing. Always something interesting, and often I rewatch your vids and get inspired to make music :)
Jeremy from Red means Recording did another good video on this:

Always felt braids sounded better, definitely fatter to my ears.
