I never seriously thought about learning this song. But this is one of the best rhythm guitar lessons I could imagine. If a beginner worked their way to playing the main rhythm figure properly, they'd jump ten steps on the rhythm guitar journey.
I’m using it as an example from now on. Never really threw light to it before in lessons but you’re right. Plenty to take away from it when discussing the relaxed strumming hand and not breaking that rhythmic helix. 🧬
Good lord, where has this channel been all my life? I’m not even a third of the way through this video and I can already tell this will be my new favorite guitar channel.

This is, by far, the best tutorial I've ever seen. I mean that. I've been occasionally tooling around with this song since I first heard it at age 14 back in 1995. I have a "dad rock" band now and we're progressing to the point where we've been closely studying Zeppelin songs and trying to nail them (we do a mean "Out on the Tiles") but I digress. Your teaching method and overall approach/demeanor is absolutely perfect for the average player wishing to take it to the next level. I wanna thank you.
Mr Spedding, I've been obsessed with this song since I first heard it in 2012. You're the first guitar teacher i've come across who picked up on the little irregularities throughout this song and emphasized them so much. Amazing lesson as always, hopefully I'll be able to play this song properly now

A lot of Zeppelin fans hate this song. I don't understand why. I've loved this song since I was 5 years old. One of the best on "Houses of the Holy!!!"
I don't get it either. Love this song & Bonham's drumming is Fantastic, this song once again proves the Brilliant Diversity that all 4 members were equipped with. In the Pearl Jam Documentary "Twenty" Bass Player Jeff Ament is sitting on a Bluff talking about his band wanting to be like Zeppelin and refers to "Chameleon" That's what Zeppelin was. You really can't put a label on them because of that Diversity. They could be anything they wanted in an instant.
I love how you are trying to explain how people like me just play what they feel , I don’t think what I’m playing I just do it , I have no idea what Im doing , it’s just feel

Very much like my old friend from 🇧🇷, a very good musician as well, answered with when I asked him 30 years ago. Why can't I play the blues like Jimi?? Jorge' simply said, it's because you ain't sad enough. 😎😎
7:15 "You're only ever going to hit the B to C (high E string) on the Am chord" (or something to that effect). This would be because your 4th finger almost cannot physically slide only to the C on the high E-string when at the same time your 3rd finger is sliding to the E on the G-string. But you can fix this by fingering the first sixth (that's the interval when you play the G-String and the E-string simultaneously like this), which on the Am chord is D and B, with the *reverse* fingering. That means start your slide on the Am part with the 3rd finger on the High E-string at B, and the 4th finger on the G-string at D. In this position, when you slide up, your 3rd finger naturally wants to stay behind at the 8th fret while the 4th finger, on the G-string, naturally wants to go ahead to the 9th fret, at E.
Sped spedding. You are a very good guitarist, and teacher. I have come late to playing the insrument. Oh, I have picked away at it for years but am now, in my later years trying to see how good I can progress. I am greatful for you instruction, and would like to thank you for your help.

Since when the album came out, I also thought it is was obvious that this song was intended to poke some good natured fun of 50's and early 60's pop.......similarly to The Crunge as a satire on James Brown's funk which was really popular at the time....( still is) It was like " Here you go folks.....Led Zepplin kicks the crap out of a standard early rock progression. Haha...I just stumbled on to your channel and you rock. Great playing and great lesson. Oh and ya cracked me up a couple times too. Thanks for the lesson, cheers
Funny on the pronunciation of the title... I'm Gen X and was weened on 60s and 70s rock and initially I thought it was Dyer maker because in American English common use of the apostrophe in slang situations guides us there (C'mon >come on, L'il man >little man etc...), so when we see D'yer often times we're gonna want to say "Dire Maker". I once read Robert say something about how "all the Americans call it Dire Maker", and I never knew what he meant because I didn't "hear" him say it, I just read it. When I finally heard you "say" it, it made perfect sense (D'yer Maker, Der Maker Jer maker, "Jamaica"), how was I supposed to know. It's not like you guys speak English or anything like that... 😆 Just kidding.... Cheers 🍺😎🎸
I know a lot of this channel is tongue and cheek but just wanted to say Sped that I have learnt so much Zeppelin from your channel and in quicker time than any other places I have tried to learn these songs from. Is it because I have progressed as a guitar player? eh maybe but I truly believe it is your style of teaching and you really leave it up to the student go to as deep as they shall. Anyways just wanted to sing you some praises and toot your horn a bit lol...
40 years I've been calling it Dyer Maker and always wondered what a Dyer Maker is. Makes sense now, Thank you! I can sleep better now! Just found your channel 2 days ago, loving it. Great work!
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I remember the first time they came to the Fillmore West in SF. I was in high-school at the time in 68 or 69. Tickets were $3.50. The handball had an avocado on the front, unfortunately, I missed my ride and never did get to see them.
Hey, Sped! Great video! This one has always been on my bucket list to learn, but I've been putting it off for years. I've always known the progression, but I never took the time to nail the strumming patterns. Like I've told you many times and in many ways over the years...I like and trust your timing, strumming, solos, and nailing all the feel and nuances of Jimmy's playing more than anyone else on youtube...or elsewhere for that matter. So, this is gonna be fun, now...Thank you, Brother! Btw, I don't know why YOU would be feeling old...I was 14 when this album came out...
Haha I was in minus figures so yeah, I get you… but I was just trying to soften the blow for everyone. 🤣 I’m stoked you’re gonna give this a go with me to once and for all. Do report back with how you get on with the rhythms!
Thank you! This is why I love music. Everything they have to offer and it’s some peoples favourite and some people’s least. I think it’s a wicked tune too.
I've always thought this was a cracking track, I don't give a sh!t what the critics say. Pagey did a great job on it, as did the rest of LZ. Good work btw, thank you ✌️👍💜😊
A member of Deep Purple (I don't remember exactly which one) said that Led Zeppelin was the only band that could play any genre of music and not look bad doing it....The most versatile rock band on the planet and for that and many other things the best. Incidentally, D'yer Maker shares the same chords as the Rosie and the originals Angel Baby song...Hence the reference to the end of the song on the original album.
I spent some time in the Caribbean, about every guitar player I have seen and/or played with have this playing style mastered, it's actually quite easy after few hours spent reviewing different figures. Nonetheless for a guitar player who's not familiar with this rhythm style, there's a good teacher on this vid. It's more a about to let flow the rhythm through chord fragments than a heavy fingering study. (much easier while on the beach under a hot sun and a cool breeze 😉)
Sped you really know your Zeppelin.Closest ive seen.I play all of em even Dazed and and confused with the violin bow...whole lotta love. ...theremin.. Blackmountainside etc.etc.etc...Best is to play your tunes. What tunes have you made.jam on.

Even nailed the Jimmy accent maybe that encouraged your court challenge to a Peter Andre - I have even got the big book since seeing your use age - didn’t like this song back in day but love it now - good work again Sped
When I was younger I probably skipped it more than I should have. Our tastes change don’t they, it’s only natural that we will like different songs, books and films as they do.
As an American, I never got the joke. Thank you. I love songs that are loosely played (pattern not set in stone) or progressive in complexity (like Breaking Benjamin.) The song is far less mechanical and has far more heart. Led Zeppelin was genius in so many ways.
Outstanding as always Mr. Sped…here in america we pronounce it just like it’s written…I’ve heard DJ’s on the radio and they always say die-er maker…so it’s just kinda stuck with us like that…great stuff👍
Just stumbled upon your channel and I’m sold. Great way to share the information, not just showing it, but really teaching the musical salience underlying the effort. As a guitarist, I really dig your pedagogy and the fact that you’ve nailed the guitar tone so well. And as a cinematographer, let me compliment you on your terrific lighting. Well done, I’m signing right on.
Welcome aboard! That’s all wonderful to hear so thanks a lot. I have taught myself a lot about cameras, lighting and sound over the years. All from other UA-camrs in that field of course. Glad it’s showing. 😍 Stoked you enjoy the way I teach.
Every Breath You Take was ripped off of (appropriated) from the last few lyric lines of this song and the chords are identical, apart from the arpeggiation. Such is the genius of success.
QUESTION: Sped, I just found your channel a week ago and I’m hooked! Your breakdowns on these Zep tunes are excellent and your tones are amazing. My question is: What kind of gear are you using? Have you covered this in a video already? Is it a Helix and if so, do you have any presets available? I would buy them if you do. Thanks, my dude! Cheers from Arizona 🤘🏼
@Sped Spedding the first vinyl I bought with my own money was Houses of the Holy. $5 COD. I've always liked D'yer Mak'er, but have never tried to play it... though I have tried The Crunge... such a weird one, but solid funk.
I figured out the chord progression several years ago( which is obviously not the challenge) but the rhythm and picking were so crazy I put it on the shelf. I will take this challenge and report back🤔
Awesome Mike, let me know how you get on. Just keep that picking handing relaxed and bouncing. Don't stress if you hit something by accident as it'll probably still sound good with the right chord on.
I don't understand why so many people dislike this song. It's like lazy opinion these days, it's almost as if people don't think about it, but when they see hate comments they want to blend in and go: "yeah it sucks" without any reason and thought behind it. Bizarre.... It's a wonderful song
Its impossible to play this just like jimmy page, his timing is impeccable and spot on,ive found that where it sounds sloppy, its to keep it in time,, ive tried it and je just blows me away
Brilliant. This was one of my all-time favourite Zep tunes back when it was a radio hit here in the 70's. I just assumed it was pronounced like it was spelled. Dye... er... maker. (Said with a western Canadian accent.) Because it didn't make sense any way I could think of, and I had no idea what it meant.
This is one of my all-time favorite Zeppelin tracks, I'd tried learning it once or twice before and just got frustrated because I couldn't come anywhere _close_ to the beauty I heard on the record

Amazingly they also got me Masters of the Universe Hawkwind to one year. One of my mates from church brother also gave me all his Motorhead albums too. Lucky me!!! Im ashamed to say I sold them for money for drugs later ...rock n roll!!!
@@darrentatem429 You're not Aquarius by any chance, funnily enough Darren is one of my aliases when Im not in full on messiah mode. Lol
I tried playing this song a long time ago in the 70s and I never got it quite right. Thanks for the in depth lesson.
No problem! Always curious to see which parts people change after watching. 🤘🏻
I learned something today - that D'yer Mak'er is a play on "Jamaica". I had no idea but now I can't un-hear it. Great video. I love your accent :)
I think a lot of people will be learning that today as well haha! Thank you, glad you liked it - video and accent! 🇬🇧
I knew this all along, hahaha... 😄 Wait, this is a brand new video? wohoo!
Haha...I just stumbled on to your channel and you rock.
Great playing and great lesson.
Oh and ya cracked me up a couple times too.
Thanks for the lesson,cheers
Welcome aboard haha! You’ll be pleased to know nearly all videos are laced with the same kinda stuff. 😂
Sped, you're an excellent guitarist and teacher, and an all around cool cat. Thanks for another great upload!!!
Thank you kindly!
Just kidding.... Cheers 🍺😎🎸
I’m going shopping this weekend for an electric guitar,I’m a beginner and a huge fan of Led Zeppelin…thanks 🎸
What you after? 😍
@@SpedSpedding a Les Paul… probably be a Epiphone brand bc of price ..
Another master class of my favorite group!
Thanks 👍
Glad you enjoy it!
oh jesus, after 45 years it's about bloody time I play it right!! Thanks Master Sped!
Hahaha, I love the seriousness of this comment! “For god’s sake, fine!!!” 🤣
I learned something new! Ive gotta get me that book 📙
Wow. This is really good. One of my favorite Zep tunes ever as well. 🔥
Thanks for listening and glad you liked the lesson. It’s a useful lesson in picking and rhythm.
When first got this album when I was 13 , I called D'yer Mak'er by way I read it , Dyer Maker and I did not know much about Jamaica at 13 either .
You're not the only one, I thought the same thing, just a kid being a kid! :)
40 years I've been calling it Dyer Maker and always wondered what a Dyer Maker is. Makes sense now, Thank you! I can sleep better now! Just found your channel 2 days ago, loving it. Great work!
Glad to help! So many people have said the same hahaha!
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I remember the first time they came to the Fillmore West in SF. I was in high-school at the time in 68 or 69. Tickets were $3.50. The handball had an avocado on the front, unfortunately, I missed my ride and never did get to see them.
Thanks again Sped! Not my favorite Zep song but now I've seen this video I'm definitely gonna learn this one. It's a masterpiece!
Enjoy playing it. A lot of people have said the same.
Great Vid as always , thank you very much , I keep tying to learn that one , I think you've helped me find the missing link.
That’s awesome! What was missing? ⛓️
Lol your Page impersonation was spot on
😂 amazing. It’s becoming a thing!
I’m stoked you’re gonna give this a go with me to once and for all. Do report back with how you get on with the rhythms!
@@SpedSpedding I certainly will...you young pup, you...😊
Even though I knew how to play the song I couldn’t resist watching the video just for the story time! Great job bud
Haha that's awesome! I reckon one day I will have read the whole book. Just in a ridiculous order.

Awesome lesson Sir! My favorite LZ song.
Thank you! This is why I love music. Everything they have to offer and it’s some peoples favourite and some people’s least. I think it’s a wicked tune too.
10/10 lesson, video, explication. Genius!!
Great stuff.
Thank you! You actually did it.
I did! Haha you're welcome.
smashing it as per usual
Thank you mate!
I've always thought this was a cracking track, I don't give a sh!t what the critics say. Pagey did a great job on it, as did the rest of LZ.
Good work btw, thank you ✌️👍💜😊
Well said and I agree with you!
i think the critics have changed their tune in the 50 years this record has been out.

Smashing lesson and in depth breakdown thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Such a beautiful song. Excellent lesson.....
Glad you like it!
That explains the quote at the start then!
And Diana.

Whenever I'm asked what's my favorite Zep tune, I always spit out at least 10 tunes, that are always changing. 😅😊.

Sped you really know your Zeppelin.Closest ive seen.I play all of em even Dazed and and confused with the violin bow...whole lotta love. ...theremin.. Blackmountainside etc.etc.etc...Best is to play your tunes. What tunes have you made.jam on.
You can find more about my original stuff on my website, UA-cam homepage or link in my bio. And thanks,!
This is great. I picked up a couple little bits I hadn’t been playing right. Excellently done sir
That’s wicked, which bits?
Thank you. Yes I would have never thought of learning this song but you made it super attractive. Good teaching and your personality is my favorite.
Glad it was helpful! It’s actually really fun once you get the rhythm down. I rate it.
HOLY CRAP! I dude actually spells out the riffs. Wow thanks man. I've never seen anyone else on YT. You really get it as far as TEACHING. . well done.... Been forever since ive tried but saving this. (thiat right hand is just going naturally) wow man. you actually do rock!
Wow, thanks! Glad you found so much use in this video!
This isn’t my style, not my favorite zeppelin, but that was really fun. Good skills. Always wrong to underestimate zep.
I feel like there’s something in every Zep song worth our attention.
I’m still cracking up about your Jimmy Page impression…..spot on perfect!
😂😂😂😂 glad I got you!
Great stuff. Best Zep teacher on the platform. Thanks man.
💪🏻😏
Great episode! Great song! Great album! Love your channel.👍
Thank you! Great display pic and name! 🙌🏻
The lesson and your playing are amazing
Always liked this song, look forward to tackling all the nuances and intricacies Thank You 🙏🏼
Awesome, thank you! Hope they help.
Outstanding as always Mr. Sped…here in america we pronounce it just like it’s written…I’ve heard DJ’s on the radio and they always say die-er maker…so it’s just kinda stuck with us like that…great stuff👍
Haha do they really! The band would never have thought it’d cause so much trouble. 🇯🇲
Probably due to the sensors...
Robert always said it was a Welsh phrase.

I just turned 50, 4/4/73. My favorite album as a toddler, along with Dark side of the moon.
So cool, happy birthday to you! Hope you had an amazing one.
Stoked you enjoy the way I teach.
Hes back with another banger
Get me a plate of mash! 🥔
I love this riff so much fun to play thanks heaps legend!
You’re so welcome!
Great tone! Insightful lesson
Thank you kindly!
Thank you, Mr.Spedding!! Great Lesson!!!😍
My pleasure!
Wow, I just found this.
I earlly like your style, your commentary makes it great!
Amazing thank you!
"It's a very sweet solo... it deserves our attention."
Well put.
You got it. 🇯🇲😏
@Sped Spedding the first vinyl I bought with my own money was Houses of the Holy. $5 COD.
I've always liked D'yer Mak'er, but have never tried to play it... though I have tried The Crunge... such a weird one, but solid funk.
A really powerful lesson and amazing song…
It’s refreshing how different it is. Glad you liked the video.
Great lesson, and very entertaining as well. Thanks for in depth analysis and humor of course 😊👍
My pleasure as always!
Haha, I reckon what they considered to be an obvious and simple joke has confused millions of people for half a century. That's the British for you!
You made this video/lesson very enjoyable
Glad you liked it!
This is one of my all-time favorite Zeppelin tracks, I'd tried learning it once or twice before and just got frustrated because I couldn't come anywhere _close_ to the beauty I heard on the record
You ready to have another go? 💪🏻😏
@@SpedSpedding I think so man! I really like the way you broke it down, starting with the fundamentals and adding complexity, makes it really digestible and a lot more approachable 👍 you're a good teacher

How about a lesson on Robert Plants' Heaven Knows? My favorite post Zeppelin Page solos.
