Just to clarify the mileage after I asked my neighbour. The bike has done 200,000+ KM's, had a top end rebuild at around 130,000 in Munich, Germany. Other than that, just regular servicing.
RoyalJordanian Beautiful, nice to hear your helping the older generation 200,000 wow and people get rid of their bikes because they think 30,000 is a lot. You are an inspiration. Cheers.
For me that's the best video you have ever done. It's not posh. it's not flash. it's just real and a great story and it's not even your bike even better. The fact you help him to maintain it is so charitable. :)
I'm early but i'm not good under pressure; So here is the ingredients to a Christmas cake : 175g (6 oz) raisins 350g (12 oz) glace cherries, rinsed, thoroughly dried and quartered 500g (1lb 2oz) currants 350g (12oz) sultanas 150ml (¼ pint) sherry, plus extra for feeding Finely grated zest of 2 oranges 250g (9oz) butter, softened 250g (9oz) light muscovado sugar 4 eggs 1 tbsp black treacle 75g (3oz) blanched almonds, chopped 75g (3oz) self-raising flour 175g (6oz) plain flour 1½ tsp mixed spice To finish and decorate Mary Berry's Christmas cake: About 3tbsp apricot jam, sieved and warmed Icing sugar 675g shop-bought almond paste Packet royal icing mix to cover 23cm/9in cake
The owner must be an incredible guy. What a story. Had a grin from ear-to-ear on the drive. It sounds a real peach. Even the clunky gearbox is charming. Thanks for keeping them both in top order.
What a stunning machine. The sound's of classic motor engineering is calming, and the smell must be amazing. I do like the story behind this bike, would never hear anything like it to these days. RJ it must of put a heavenly smile to your face Sir.
Great story indeed as many have said, I sent the link to my father who is also mid 70's and the below is his response having experienced the era first hand so to speak...... ''He certainly got his money's worth. I don't think the handlebars are original fit. The gear changes seem as noise as I remember. In the days the Germans could still buy Zundapp flat twins and there was interest in lighter British twins, the German BMW critics called 'beemers' farmers bikes. My Jawa had an ignition key very similar to the one shown. The Czechs were forced to make DKWs for the Germans so they must have cribbed the idea.Back in the 1960's most buyers opted for the R60 600cc model, so that R50 must be very rare these days''.
I love it when man and machine share a life and a true love. This is a fantastic story, absolutely love it! Thank you for sharing this RJ!! and it's great that you're being a true biker and helping others, but more importantly helping an elderly neighbour. Good on you RJ!!
Now that, boys and girls, is the bike that I rode pillion on in 1966! Well, not that one, but one exactly like it. The engine sounds fine AJ. Bless you for helping a Yank and a not so young one at that! Thank you for sharing this story.
What an awesome motorcycle! Truly great to see one that's completely original and not café racerified or turned into a bobber. Hope your friend will enjoy countless more miles on it.
good old BMW, the sound is just phenomenal! My grandfather has got a BMW R60/6, a massive motorcycle with loads of torque and it's still running as if it was new - love it
That takes me back, I had a 1962 R50 in 1967. It had a few "S" bits - rocker boxes and air cleaner, and so I was told " S " camshaft. I was only 20, it was the type of bike that put you on your best behavior. Having said that it was good for 80 all day long and a good 90 flat out, happy days!
Love the video! Nothing like the sound of a /2! My father left me his 1967 R50/2, and it’s puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Definitely agree with the brakes, give yourself that extra space. I’ve updated my brake shoes to a modern material along with new cables, and it does help, but still give yourself that extra space. Safe travels!
My boss has two of these bikes! He rides one in to work and it has a front windshield. The other one is sitting in his garage waiting to be worked on. Fantastic bike, and it runs fantastic!
this is amazing!! love the bike! Cool guy driving in his mid 70....my dad still drives his Harley softtail classic -91 and hes only 68....love storys like this....
Lovely low rpm on tick over, plus very quiet. She's running pretty sweet just listening to it RJ. Nice work on the old girl. Good engineering stands the test of time always.
To be honest, some of the meanest guys on the country roads are the ones with the 45 years old, greasy, worn-out leathers (mostly black), those are the ones that you should fear, for there is nothing more fierce than a guy in his 70s knowing his stuff for 50 years...
That bike is heaven, it sounds so nice and looks to run so smooth for an old classic. SO much technology out there these days but this is more than that by far
Great story, great bike and what a great owner hanging on on his first bike even after fifty years ! I hope he can enjoy his 'friend' for many years to come 👌👌
You can't beat untrasonic cleaners for carb cleaning. That and a compressor. It's the slow circuit and the diffusor holes that always gets clogged and the tubes are so tiny - Nice work RJ
Beautiful bike and lovely history. Wish I was as privileged to have a conversation with your neighbor as you are. Regards to the owner and my compliments on a beautiful machine.
Oh that's a great one! Reminds me of our friend's father, who bought his first motorcycle also in the mid-60s and took it for a spin from the Netherlands all the way to Greece and back. No helmet, he departed just in his shorts and a shirt. Stories like this really make me kind of jealous of the real adventures back in the day, that really must have felt like the proper "exploring" :))) Cheers!
If I ever had to own a motorbike, I'd get this. Has a lot more character than most modern bikes. I'm a car man, but I do appreciate a good looking bike, and boy is this one good looking!
INteresting how stories of different people have something very common. A friend of mine went 400miles for a Royal Enfield in the 70s to GB in winter and drove home all the way without insurance almost freezing to death. But also have things that are very opposite, because he hated that bike sooo much. He called the Oilfield instead of Enfield because there was always something to fix. Those old BMWs are really a masterspiece of engineering for their time and made to last, they don't build bikes like that anymore and the sound in natura is just shaking it's soooo good
Amazing story, I recently purchased a Nuda which has been my dream bike since they came out and have already done 3000km's in a month. Hope I'll be like this gentleman one day!
Great Bike! Better story! BMW Motorcycles are the best motorcycles in the world! I put over 280.000 on a R80/7 with 1000cc jugs. It was my daily rider. Loved them so much, I got a job at my local BMW dealership. Mainly to learn how to maintain my own motorcycle. Howdy from Texas!!👍🤠👍
It is a lovely bike, my brother used to own one. He let me drive it now en then.and hè once had a 69/6 that rode like a rocket. Now he owns a 1200 gs. A lovely bike too. Love to see and hear you ride it.
Brilliant. A few years ago whilst riding here in Aus I saw a very elderly man on a Harley with his nephew close behind on an R1. Old mate was on his Ls! I asked the nephew why now? It was his 70th birthday and he just wanted to ride. I was grinning like a madman for hours after this. Love your content RJ. Ride safe.
That's a nice bike and a nice story too. :) I have a friend in the same situation: he bought a (Hungarian made, so not very well known 250ccm 2T) Pannonia P10 brand new in 1969 and can't live without it. :)
I think I would love your grandpa Jacob. Any person that is over 60 and still riding is way cool to me. I miss the 60s something fierce. We were a wild bunch. Just ask your grandpa. lol
That is a beautiful M/C with out a doubt! Thank you for sharing!!!

What a beautiful bike ! And I really love the story of this BMW. The sound is amazing ! I really enjoyed the "clac" of the gearbox, looks like the mechanic part is living with the rider... I love this kind of classic bikes. Thanks for sharing RJ :)
Fantastic looking bike, I love the indicators and the key, it would be nice if modern manufacturers took inspiration for their new "retro" style bikes.
What an amazing story! Especially sitting on your couch in Frankfurt, what a surprise :D Motivates me to get my 20y old first bike that I still own, for 10y's now, to a trip to Vienna (were my family once lived, but I've never been) :)
Nice bike, and a great story! I'm driving my dad's 50cc Tempo Corvette 380 from 1971 and I calculated that if I don't ever sell (which I probably won't), I can ride it when it is 100 years old and I'm 72! (I'm 17 now). Hope I can keep it alive, because that would be such a cool experience :)
50 years ago they would have been the best road bike brakes you could get, on more or less the only bike that would run at high speed without leaking oil and vibrating parts off. Unfortunately, they looked funny and cost twice as much as a British bike, so very few were sold. BMW had to first fit telescopic forks, creating the R69US, then design the more up to date and easier to manufacture /5 series, which saved BMW Motorrad. Now we oldies who wouldn't have been seen dead on a /2 40 years ago can appreciate just how good they were. Nice video RJ, and I hope I will still be riding in 10 years' time.
Wow - great bike and fantastic story of the rider. Good on you for helping him out as well. Quite a few vids back I came across a vintage bike rally, and talked to one of the marshals who had a 1955 BMW R69 Sports 600. He had not owned it since new, but the bike looked like it had just come off the showroom floor - in spite of the fact he also rode his bike most days. I guess the Aussie weather is a bit more forgiving :)
The bars are original to the US market. Over on this side of the pond we like to swap out US bars for the lower Euro bars. The idle was a tad high but the bike sounds like it's running just fine. Good job RJ.

Thanks for sharing RJ
The owner must be an incredible guy. What a story. Had a grin from ear-to-ear on the drive. It sounds a real peach. Even the clunky gearbox is charming. Thanks for keeping them both in top order.
This is back to basics. It's really the best way to ride. No gadgets, no computer aids, just you and the bike. I love it!
If this bike ever breaks down and he is unable to pay the mechanic, make a kickstarter - this dude deserves to ride as long as he can
never shall this bike break down my r50 from 1952 is full steel iron :)
You're such a nice guy RJ
What a stunning machine. The sound's of classic motor engineering is calming, and the smell must be amazing. I do like the story behind this bike, would never hear anything like it to these days. RJ it must of put a heavenly smile to your face Sir.

Thanks for sharing your dad's thoughts :)
My uncle still has one and these are not the original handle bars.
I love it when man and machine share a life and a true love. This is a fantastic story, absolutely love it! Thank you for sharing this RJ!!
and it's great that you're being a true biker and helping others, but more importantly helping an elderly neighbour. Good on you RJ!!
Martin Carey Absolutely agree!
Wonderful craftsmanship. Nice story. Bike of 50+ years old, still running and with a sound like this. Thanks for sharing, RJ.
It's not just the bike, it's also the stories behind it that make it unique. Thanks Rj for sharing.
That is one beautiful nostalgic bike with a great story behind it! Thanks for sharing this rare beauty!
One of the coolest episodes of this year! Respect your elders and old bikes!
Now that, boys and girls, is the bike that I rode pillion on in 1966! Well, not that one, but one exactly like it. The engine sounds fine AJ. Bless you for helping a Yank and a not so young one at that! Thank you for sharing this story.

What a beautiful story and sentiment too. Seeing you ride that bike was very special.
This put a smile on my face, beautiful story!
+RoyalJordanian, I'm in love with the R50. The hymns it produces are God given choruses.
Truly wonderful.
Thank you
Old bikes are full of character. Thanks for sharing rj
Unmistakable BMW twin sound! Wonderful! A lovely thing you've done.
good old BMW, the sound is just phenomenal! My grandfather has got a BMW R60/6, a massive motorcycle with loads of torque and it's still running as if it was new - love it
That's real peace of art work right there! Should be in a museum. Thanks for showing this motorbike RJ
You are a true motorcycle enthusiast. I love the old bikes!

Dear God that engine sound...and the gearbox...oh my, this bike; I've just fallen in love with it!
my dad owns a 1972 enfield 350 and i love it

Amazing story! And how lucky the owner is to have you as a neighbour, RJ. Respect :).
What a beautiful machine, and an amazing story aswell!
Loved the sound and the story was great, hope he has many more years riding this beauty around.
I might not know what RJ's face looks like, but I know there's a grin from ear to ear in that helmet!
I’ve got an R60/2 and they’re so good - so reliable - and so fun. I’ve done tours on it and it’s rock solid.
It's beautiful... 2 years ago I rebuilt a 50cc motorcycle from 1974, it's amazing to ride, even just on sunday morning :)
Why doesn't UA-cam have a LOVE button? Loved this video and the story.
And the bike of course.

Fantastic. great storey as well. I have an R75/5 as well as a new R1200RT and I love the old bike. Great that you help the older gentleman.
That sound! I can't describe that beauty enough with the words. You can only feel it.
Great video BTW.
Lovely Bike! Id like to have one of these. My Father had a R90S when I was a kid. This Sound I will never forget.
Wow...that sounds awesome. So mechanical with the gears whirring. I'd drive that everyday as well.
For your next video can you get your neighbour to ride your Super Duke and share his opinions?
Dean what about no hahahahh
the guys 70 years old man i doubt he can ride a superduke
One never knows, however I would say that he won't ride it because he has ridden this one for over 20 years he is spoilt.
To be honest, some of the meanest guys on the country roads are the ones with the 45 years old, greasy, worn-out leathers (mostly black), those are the ones that you should fear, for there is nothing more fierce than a guy in his 70s knowing his stuff for 50 years...
KingSams0n
LOL I know you didn't mean that to be funny/a joke, but I couldn't agree more. Just didn't want to scare anyone with that bit of info. :)
That bike is heaven, it sounds so nice and looks to run so smooth for an old classic. SO much technology out there these days but this is more than that by far
that was wonderful to listen to, story and bike!!
Great story, great bike and what a great owner hanging on on his first bike even after fifty years !
I hope he can enjoy his 'friend' for many years to come 👌👌
50 year old bike and its awesome, even better than brand new bikes.
Congrats to the owner!
You can't beat untrasonic cleaners for carb cleaning. That and a compressor. It's the slow circuit and the diffusor holes that always gets clogged and the tubes are so tiny - Nice work RJ
What a great bike, owner and story! Thanks for sharing and taking care of it👍
Damn! Those clicking noises when u change gear! Bike has so much character.

I hope I'm riding in my mid 70's! Great video! It's great when you form a bond with the bike.
I love your attitude RJ. So humble!
That Rumble when accelerating, I think I'm in love.

Please tell your Neighbour, i wish him all the best.

A lovely old machine and a cool story behind it.
Beautiful bike and a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing RJ 👍
Really sweet sounding bike and a great story, thank you RJ.
Ride safe.
Wonderful, would love to see you have a chat with him, I bet he and the bike have some amazing stories to share.
That's a nice bike and a nice story too. :) I have a friend in the same situation: he bought a (Hungarian made, so not very well known 250ccm 2T) Pannonia P10 brand new in 1969 and can't live without it. :)
Love this video, I'm 17 and have only just started riding. I started riding because of my grandad who is 68 and still rides his Honda Cbr 1000rr
Jacob Ewers Jesus, really?? That's one kick ass grandpa you got there!
Filipe Corral well thank you, he said he won't stop until he can't walk
I think I would love your grandpa Jacob. Any person that is over 60 and still riding is way cool to me. I miss the 60s something fierce. We were a wild bunch. Just ask your grandpa. lol

10 years of riding motorcycles. I have never seen something amazing as this bike
Wow! What a terrific machine! I also love your passion RJ!
What an amazing story! Especially sitting on your couch in Frankfurt, what a surprise :D Motivates me to get my 20y old first bike that I still own, for 10y's now, to a trip to Vienna (were my family once lived, but I've never been) :)
Now that is some thing, sounds like a bike should, nice mechanical sounds going on there. Very nice to see, thank you for sharing this
Nice bike, and a great story!
Thanks for posting this - a great bike and a beautiful engine sound.
How can 6 dislike this? Jealousy? Great bike & story. Thanks RJ
The Sound on this is amazing :D
What a beautiful bike! Sounds fantastic!
Good man RJ.
I guess the Aussie weather is a bit more forgiving :)

mannnnm upload videos of daily observations of this bike.. people would love it for sure.. please RJ
Gotta love the bin bag saddle bag. Winning.
The bars are original to the US market. Over on this side of the pond we like to swap out US bars for the lower Euro bars.
The idle was a tad high but the bike sounds like it's running just fine. Good job RJ.
