Nothing more soothing than a stress free ride on a comfortable bike that has a headlight that reflects the scenery as you pass by. I had a Honda VTX with a huge chrome headlight that had a reflection like watching the surface of a calm lake. This BMW reminds me of that feeling.

How times change, from memory the road tests back in the day heaped praise on the exceptionally good brakes. Also back in the day I can remember one old boy saying making silent gear changes on a BMW is like starting a Velocette first kick, easy when you’ve got the knack. One of the blokes in the bike club I was in bought one of these brand new with a matching Steib sidecar and we were all in awe of it, not least because of what it cost. Another cracking video.

Bikes back then were designed as everyday transport and most of them were comfortable. These days, most bikes are a toy, used occasionally and are a fashion statement for many. Back in 1959 a bloke near me had a beautiful new R69; I used to drool over it. 👍

I think you’re 100% correct. As RE and others more recently have proved, there is most definitely a good market for mid sized 400-600cc simply engineered ‘retro’ bikes. I have no doubt BMW could re-create a basic R65 that would sell well if they do it at a competitive price. As the owner of a 1983 R100RS with over 100k miles on the clock I may be biased, but in reality it is all the bike you’d ever need. My friend (on his ‘83 RS) and I did a tour of Alpine passes this summer through France, Italy (including the Stelvio) Switzerland & Germany, 2500mls in 10 days and both bikes performed perfectly and let’s say that no modern bikes would have gone any faster! In the real world (outside of a racetrack) these bikes are all you need 👍

Great video, I'm a big fan of the old air-cooled BMW boxers twins, having owned a few over the years. These earlier bikes were the "Gentlemans" motorcycle and were an expensive bike at the time. Nice video TAYM and a lovely bike. My 1970 Puch had exactly the same end of the handlebar indicators and same ignition switch/ key type. If BMW made it today as a modern retro they'd have to spoil it by tuning it to 60BHP and that would take away all the charm. Back in the day they were priced almost double what a Bonneville cost. So would you pay £18,000 to £20,000 for one. of course it will need disc brakes, ABS, fuel injection, traction control, LED lights, E-vap cannister, catalytic converter etc etc.

The R60 certainly is an old classic, perhaps a little too old and classic to meet my needs in a bike but then perhaps I'm overly concerned with "chasing speed" 😂 I remember taking a shine to a more modern R100 in the local BMW dealers, perhaps fueled by the fact they were the police bikes of that era. As I'm maturing ( getting old) I can appreciate the joys of ambling along admiring ones surroundings. When I started my biking journey I had little choice but to do that, my first bike being the Raleigh Wisp. Look it up if you don't remember it, that'll give you a chuckle 😊😂

Well I think it boils down to environmental issues Mr TAYM, as to why BMW doesn't produce a modern version of the 65' R60/2.
Everyone would want an upgraded/modern version. Think about all the resources that would go into Billions of these bikes sold world wide. We'd have to start harvesting the asteroid belt, the moon, maybe Mars just to meet demand.
Knowing BMW they'd charge $35,000 US for it. BMW would become the dominant corporation/World Government and 2/3 of the World's population would work for them.
    Mayhem, pure mayhem...
    😉
In all honesty, this has become one of my top 10 bikes ever produced, it's a wonderful bike to look at and listen to.

    it rides nice ;; but if bmw were to make it again - the tooling , the brake upgrades -- which would need forks to handle them ,, emissions e.t.c. the cost would be more than the gdp of a small country ,,, for the 10 people that would actually buy it ;;; so savour it while you can ;;;

That's right why don't they make stuff like this anymore: short answer they want ya to take it to the stealership so they can make money off ya. See has to be over 50 years old and still ticking like a well maintained watch. Way to turn mickey on his head😂😂🎉.

Bmw should not recreate this bike,as like all the other imitators, it waters down the spirit, leaving us with a poor imitation of the original idea.

BMW could produce a bike like this nowadays . After all , Moto Guzzi are able to make a bike very reminiscent of their 1960s and 1970s machines .
One could say that the R18 is that bike and certainly it is the only good looking bike that BMW have made in 50 years . But the R18 is a power cruiser and a bit too much for most of us who want a practical "everyday" machine.
If BMW were to make a replica R60 , they would probably make it in China .😮
With a quick shifter ( for those who can't operate engine speed clutches ) and 3 ride modes :
sepia ( for the nostalgic experience ) ,
blitz black and white ( for the lightning fast experience ) and
teknicolor panorama ( for the laid back cinematic full armchair life experience ).
The bike could also have radar , but that is a secret .🤫
Plus the usual ABS , TCU , Bluetooth , TFT and tyre pressure monitoring etc etc etc .
BMW are hooked on teknology .
Rather takes the fun out of it I think .🥲
