I saw him here in Phoenix on Strange Highways tour at a small club called the Roxy (which no longer exists). The first band was Atomic Opera....great show!! After the concert, Ronnie signed autographs outside by his tour bus and spoke with fans...what a great guy!!! Then I saw him on Angry Machines tour a couple years later with Great White opening up, I think that one was in Tempe. I know this is against what most people think, but I actually like the Tracy G era the best. And, all though they're both great albums, I think I like Angry Machines more.
i can tell Dehumanizer is weaker than these two ones. These are real bangers.Tracy G's era albums are simply the BEST two albums of DIO, where he finally found his own unique sound and atmosphere, not being a copycat of blackmore/black sabbath like in other albums, it's the most congrous of all that DIO made. BRILLIANT COVER ARTWORK, BRILLIANT EERIE RIFFS, BRILLIANT EVIL VOICE & LYRICS, everything is amazing here. it's such a shame Dio made only two albums with Tracy..
I have every Dio album and like these 2 alot. Saw Dio on tour for both of these and the new material sounded great live amongst all the other classics. I especially like songs like Hunter of the Heart and Double Monday from Angry Machines
Tracy G is an underated guitarist. I use to take lessons from him in the 80's when he was in Swift Kick and before Riff Raff and WW3 (his sister was my hair dresser). Funny, talented beyond anyone's imagination.
Forgive me if I posted this before, but Tracy is great in all that he does. I remember back in 93 my wife and I went to a family reunion and my uncle Tony told me that my cousin Tracy got the gig with Dio. I was blown away. I was never a Dio fan but when Trace would send me back stage passes it was a blast. I couldn't hear for days but it was a once in a lifetime experience. You ought to hear him play the blues and classical, incredible!
Lair I agree with you, Tracy brought a different but very cool timbre and riffs, I really like his work and I believe he should be much more recognized for that and for the many works he has done over time.
Agree, also got Angry Machines in ‘96 and dug it. Was tough being into metal at that tine. Got Strange Highways later. Also, Backstreet Crawler, nice. RIP Paul Kossoff
it doesn't need to be defended. Tracy G's era albums are simply the BEST two albums of DIO, where he finally found his own unique sound and atmosphere, not being a copycat of blackmore/black sabbath like in other albums, it's the most congrous of all that DIO made. Dude these albums kick serious A$$!!! Honestly, even though Sacred Heart is my personal favorite, Strange Highways and Angry Machines are close behind.
Great riffs from Tracy G, underrated guitarist with a unique style and great sound! Angry Machines I like more than Strange Highways, for now...All guitarists in Dio were superb, but to me Tracy G and Craig Goldy are favorites! The cover to Lock Up The Wolves I guess is my favorite
Glad I discovered this! Strange Highways is excellent. I enjoyed Angry Machines as well, but I don't think it's quite at the Strange Highways level. So very good, but not excellent. I thought Tracy G's playing was great on both albums, particularly Strange Highways- cool riffs, great soloing, intersting sounds. Great playing on both albums.
It's interesting that you're reviewing these albums. I was going to write an article about Angry Machines. I just haven't got around to it yet. The guitar playing on Angry Machines is really great. Plus, it has to be one of Dio's heavier albums. It's highly underrated, and I really think people should give it another listen before passing final judgment on the album. I don't think many people give it a fair shake. Just my two cents.
Next to Iommi, Tracy G is actually my favorite Dio guitarist. I am not a big fan of Angry Machines, but I love Strange Highways. It's as close as we got to a follow up to Dehumanizer which is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Dios Inferno Live is a overlooked album. Tracy G is a badass unique player... I remember when that come out AND I heard a few songs AND didn't know who the guitar player was. Had to find out. Glad I did. Nobody ever heard of TRACY G back then.. great comparison he was a Great noisy player..
Tracy is very creative I love that I can’t figure out where he is going to go with things. He doesn’t resolve phrases in the normal ways you’d expect. He is fantastic. I love how he played the older stuff it was different but still amazing. As a long time fan it was great to go and see Dio and hear older songs sound new again
You are totally, 100% dead-on! What he did with the older stuff, adding his own flair was AMAZING, and the Tracy G critics I think, need to listen to his live stuff. I find myself always defending him on the UA-cam comments where his stuff is. So, I'm going to throw this out there, what he did with Rainbow In the Dark, and Last in Line, as well as Heaven and Hell, was really innovative. Great stuff. But also, Double Monday, Hunter of the Heart- mind-blowing live. Institutional Man and Big Sister are my 2 favorite on the album.
You are my new friend 😊 ! For me - Strange Highways is THE Dio album. Best of them all. For whatever reason I have pretty much totally skipped Angry Machines....until today. I listened 2/3 of it and man, my mistake for not done it before. Most likely in coming monday I am in record store buying that one. I am with you on that that it's not as catchy as Highways but still so gooood! During Angry Machines Tour they played in small 800 capasity club here in Finland and I wish that I would have been there. My friend was and he is so happy for that. To see Ronnie that close would have been awesome 🙂
Always loved Tracy G. He mixes it up so much as his sound is so different than other players. You know absolutely it's him playing from the first chords. His live shows with Dio are awesome! Vivian is always my favorite, but Tracy sure came through! Strange Highways is one of my favorite albums of all time. Great post and discussion. Thanks man!
I like these 2 albums, but it took awhile for me to get into them. There is so much texture to the songs in this era. I remember when these came out and indeed, the music climate was changing. I liked the songs that got airplay so I bought them. I was like “holy shit! DIO has something new again!!!” But the other songs on the albums took a while to get into. I really like them now, very good songwriting, dark and moody.
Strange Highways was a killer Dio record, as worthy a part of his catalog as anything he's done The live Stuff with Tracy G was great as well and he (Tracy G) was totally phenomenal on the first WWIII album with Mandy Lion. (..basically the band DIO with Mandy Lion on vocals in place of Dio)
Hmm… Angry Machines might be my favorite Dio album. After Last in Line. Just before Holy Diver. I love my Dio heavy, fast, and I don’t mind dark and depressing!🤟🏻😎🤟🏻 I absolutely see Dehumanizer - Strange Highways - Angry Machines as an (un?)holy trinity👍🏻
Doug Aldrich did not fit to DIO at all. blues + metal = nah. doesn't conjoin , Craig Goldy is also weak. Tracy was perfect musician for DIO for sure, he made this eerie atmosphere that gives you goosebumps
"Strange Highways" is a masterpiece in my humble opion and "Angry Machine" is not a bad record either. Nice that you put some spotlights on these cool records. Great job! I also loved the live record: Dio's inferno. Tracy G. was a great guitar player for Dio. Yes, very different from the others. It gave Dio a modern sound. I heard Tracy play Stargazer in 1998 and he totally ruled.
I enjoyed hearing this take on the Dio albums with Tracy G. Some of what you are saying here feels familiar to my own mindset at the time. I had mostly left metal behind in the early to mid-nineties and was looking for something new. Tracy G fit the bill. There's nothing formulaic about his playing. The Angry Machines track "Stay Out of My Mind" is one of my all-time favorites from Dio.
I enjoy what Tracy G brought to the table. RJD really pushed out some abrasive sounding vocals where needed. I missed those tours but welcomed the belated release of the Live At The Hammersmith 1993.
Glad you did this. I really like those albums and find the songs really catchy. I would say Strange Highways is better though. I put those 2 albums higher than Master of the Moon, Magica, and Lock Up The Wolves. I personally can enjoy every Dio album, except Lock Up The Wolves...I just don't like that one.
it doesn't need to be defended. Tracy G's era albums are simply the BEST two albums of DIO, where he finally found his own unique sound and atmosphere, not being a copycat of blackmore/black sabbath like in other albums, it's the most organic of all that DIO made. BRILLIANT COVER ARTWORK, BRILLIANT EERIE RIFFS, BRILLIANT EVIL VOICE & LYRICS, everything is amazing here. it's such a shame Dio made only two albums with Tracy..
@@Gregbaltzer classic albums are cool , i'm ok with them, but they are just an hommage to rainbow's era. It's a typical classical hard & heavy music , that had nothing special, you could find ф a lot of other bands who sounded the same. And it's totally another story with SH & AM albums. They are very individual and really evil, giving goosebumps, like no other DIO albums
Hopefully you read this or already know, Tracy G. is back! He is in a new band " Dark Mile" s/t album, with Mark Huff former singer for Quiet Riot. Found it on the DANGERDOG MUSIC REVIEWS site. First audio single is "The Boy" and it's a rocker.
I've learned to really like this era. It's absolutely the continuation of Dehumanizer, but none of these three are what most fans thought they wanted to hear. All these years later, they have a freshness compared to the more-standard Metal sound of earlier Dio-fronted albums. The live albums are both (London and Inferno) highly enjoyable, if you think of them as Black Sabbath playing Dio band songs. Yeah, Tracy G. can't play Vivian's solos, but Iommi wouldn't have been able to either. One more thing, Lock Up the Wolves is enormously subtle, it took me many listens before it clicked, but it eventually did...
That’s a good take on those albums. I’ll need to revisit Angry Machines because, no, I didn’t like it much at all back then. Adding to that I saw the tour at the Palladium in Worcester, MA in Dec96 and left a bit early, disappointed. That was more due to Dio trying to follow Motorhead. Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio, Megadeth, I saw those brave titans take Motorhead out and then couldn’t follow Lemmy’s onslaught. Nobody could really.
I really liked what I'm gonna call your "ruthlessly inspired" in defense of early 1990's Dio. Haha For me Strange highways would be the 4 or 5th best Dio album.
Its strange and unfair I think, while especially "Angry Machines" would need more listens from me and wouldn't agree with a "technoprobe/ primitivistic" world view, Dio was taking a more "hands on"/ "real world" lyrical approach with less fantastical lyrics & themes, yet those who criticised him for be too fantastic also criticised his "realistic period" as Dio himself described it, which makes sense when one considers the grim global political economy of the early 90's, not least on vulnerable sections of society like the youth.
Saw DIO 7/8 x times in the NJ/ NYC over the years. Own entire discography. Strange HIGHWAYS is heavy duty. IMO. Grunge” never did it for me. / highly depressing IMO. Great 👍 job LAIR
I personally am not a big fan of the "slow plodding" Dio, but Strange Highways is pretty good. I saw him on that tour at a small club. Tracy G was in the same early band circle as Eddie Van Halen. There's a lot of him in the VH Rising book.
Tracy got screwed over by the record company and they pressured RJD to go back and rehire Craig Goldy to have two guitar players. Tracy felf that stifling. I see Tracy as a better live guitarist...as Craig is a stick in the mud on stage. Nothing against Craig, just that RJD should have an electrified live band.
that's all good but no need to defend anything...DIO sang great on those 2 LPs, people will like or not like whatever, & live they just play a couple new songs mixed in with all the hits so no problem...you go to the show you will get a good show...

100% with you here. Both are terribly overlooked and underrated.

Thanks for this video. I'm cranking Angry Machines right now!
You're welcome, enjoy the album!
I really dig Strange Highways probably Dio's 3rd or 4th fave album for me, I also like Angry Machines just slightly less.

Saw the Strange Highways tour in Fern Park at The Station. It was freaking 94 degrees in that dump. Dio was great tho

I absolutely see Dehumanizer - Strange Highways - Angry Machines as an (un?)holy trinity👍🏻
AM my fav Dio album too!!! Waaaaay ahead of the competition without losing the Ronnie Dio heavy metal ethic.
It took some listening- hated the era starting with Dehumaizer .. but eventually they broke in my ears and became some favorites.
I love Strange Highways. There’s something about that album in particular, it has the stronger songs.
I really liked Doug Aldrich’s playing on Killing the Dragon, too. The guitar solo on the song scream reminds me of Vivian Campbells playing. 🔥🤘🔥
Doug Aldrich did not fit to DIO at all. blues + metal = nah. doesn't conjoin , Craig Goldy is also weak. Tracy was perfect musician for DIO for sure, he made this eerie atmosphere that gives you goosebumps
saw Dokken open for Dio in the 80s.....2nd row was great to see Vivian Campbell & George Lynch at the same concert

I actually love both. Still favor Strange Highways tho
I like Angry Machines better than Strange Highways and The Live album was a good live document with Tracy G.
I never understood the hate for these albums. Did people want metal from Dio or not....?
Strange Highways is a masterpiece
I enjoy what Tracy G brought to the table. RJD really pushed out some abrasive sounding vocals where needed. I missed those tours but welcomed the belated release of the Live At The Hammersmith 1993.
Never had a problem with any of Dio's guitarists in any of his bands, Strange Highways is a strong as hell album.
Glad you did this. I really like those albums and find the songs really catchy. I would say Strange Highways is better though. master of the moon is the weakest along with killing the dragon and magica. It was a huge mistake loosing Tracy
@@ВсадникАпокалипсиса-я9е Killing the Dragon is the closest Dio ever came to sounding like his classic first 4 albums. That album is really good

Love Tracy G on Last In Live Live Inferno
Absolutely. I just said that. Very good album. Over looked. Great production. Done on Strange Highways tour
pain ,firehead and hollywood black are my most favs off the first
indeed he Tracy g sounded black sabbath riffs.heavy metal indeed
If you have to defend it, there's a problem already. Even Ronnie said that Angry Machines was an experimental album that went wrong.
Strange Highways is my favorite Dio album and the title track is my favorite Dio song
I couldn’t agree with you more-I love these 2 DIO albums. Lost in America & This is your Life-what gems! 🔥🤘🔥
Dying in America 😉
I got mixed up with an Alice Cooper song.
Excellent video!
Tracy g is my fab Dio guitar player \m/
Love both albums :) I love Lock Up The Wolves, I dislike Magica thou :p
How about the Graig Goldy ones?
I've always preferred Craig. Master of the Moon and Magika are brilliant. No disrespect to Tracy, he's great in his own right.
i agree 100%

I see Tracy as a better live guitarist...as Craig is a stick in the mud on stage. Nothing against Craig, just that RJD should have an electrified live band.
What is the name of the live album with Tracy G?
I've got a CD called Live in London -1993. There's also a DVD from the same concert. I think it was recorded at the Hammersmith.
The Official Tracy G live album is -Inferno: Last in Live
Cool thanks
Inferno Live or something
that's all good but no need to defend anything...DIO sang great on those 2 LPs, people will like or not like whatever, & live they just play a couple new songs mixed in with all the hits so no problem...you go to the show you will get a good show...
It’s a shame that Tracy needs defended.
I don’t know what some people are hearing
It’s okay if you like other players better, but to trash Tracy makes no sense
Tracy G sound in Dio was a heavy sound , but his solo's weren't so good.....
I hate to say this but this is my least favorite Dio album. I remember when I bought it, but it just never grew on me. I don't hate it but I wasn't thrilled about it. I Loved Strange Highways, Killing the Dragon and Masters of the moon.
i dont blame ronnie ozzy was an asshole to dio because of jealousy
That's fine if you liked Tracy's vibe and style with his new Dio songs but he butchered the classics.
I get why people didn't care for his version of the older stuff, he really did his own thing and it sometimes didn't fit.
Tracy G. mmm hard pass.
Craig Goldy is the Man. Magica is a Fantastic Album. Love Tracy G as well.
