2017 Ducati SuperSport Review | MC Commute

- Motorcyclist staffer Zack Courts is always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights. We thought some of it might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts, so we strapped a camera and microphone to the side of his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. A lot of him talking in his helmet is complaining about drivers, yelling at red lights, and wondering why billboards aren’t more expensive. But sometimes he actually talks about the bike, and those are the parts we keep. Got a bike you would like to see discussed? Let us know and we’ll send him home on that one next.

It's no secret we're always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones that always seem to have too much to say. "Write it down!" we always shout at each other. Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he's riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts. So we strapped a camera and microphone to the side of his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. This time, we sent him to Spain for the launch of this new SuperSport from Ducati. First, a flying lap of the Monteblanco Circuit and then a cruise through the Spanish hills just outside Sevilla. Rough life, Zack...

Ducati talking to reporters - "It'sa street bike, it'sa street bike, it'sa street bike"
Ducati talking to themselves - "Let'sa call it'a SuperSport."
CTFU
So much hate towards this bike for absolutely no reason. It is NOT a panigale. Its a relaxed, street oriented street bike with relaxed ergos and clip ons that won't break your wrists after 20 min of riding. People have been asking for a bike like this for years.
Not everyone wants a 200hp street missle. Is it overpriced? Yes. But is there a demand for it? Hell yes there is.
On to the looks. Again, its NOT a panigale. Is the windshield awkward? A little bit, but i love how the bike looks in pictures. I will reserve any judgement on its looks when I see it in person.
Go out and ride the thing before you call it a ninja 300 like an idiot.
Still trying to figure out how the bike is overpriced..
Texarmageddon The price is its biggest fault. it's Panigale money for a bike that is nowhere near a Panigale. huge mistake from ducati. I wanted one but am not prepared to pay £13k for one when I can get a Panigale for £14k...
the SS is a compromise on a Panigale...but at the same price????
Ducati could have had a massive winner with this bike but theyve killed it with the pricing.
With all due respect it's not a Panigale, it's a sport Touring bike. A bike that will get large Touring aftermarket support where as the Panigale or Any supersport/Naked bike will NEVER get.
Also, are you guys even aware of what a NEW 959 Panigale cost? A brand new CURRENT YEAR Panigale 959 here in the US is 15, 695. This is Before OTD taxes etc.
You can get into a VFR800 for $10,799 Brand New before OTD taxes. These are heavily Discounted now as they didn't sell.
You can get into a Ninja1000 for $12,199 Brand New Before OTD taxes.
You can get into a GSXS1000F for $ 10, 999 Brand New Before OTD taxes.
You can get into a FJ-09 for $10,699 or an FJR1300 for $16, 390 Brand new before OTD taxes.
You can get a Turismo Veloce 800 for $15, 998 or you can get Stradale 800 for $14,598
You can get a BMW 1200RS for $14,995 , K1300S at $ 15,995 , F800GT for $12,095, and for shits and giggles I'll even throw in the R1200RT which is $ 18,145.
Lastly, you can get a KTM 1290 SuperDuke GT for $19,999...
So there you have it... When you compare the Supersport price with all the sport touring bikes.. $12,995 isn't exactly expensive in this market... Especially since the ONLY bike worth a damn in the sport touring segment that is cheaper is the GSXS1000f.. It's not a full fledge sport bike neither is it a full fledge touring bike... That's what makes sport touring a great class.. cause you can get a bike that leans to one side or the other, but still won't be as aggressive as a supersport/
Texarmageddon I'm well aware of the price of both as I have a test ride on both at my local Ducati in 2 weeks time where I will ordering one of them there and then. Currently in the UK the Panigale is around £800 dearer than the Supersport S...and granted I haven't ridden them both yet, but I have sat on both and I immediately noticed the SS has a lot cheaper feel to it...the Panigale feels a lot better put together and strangely looks like better quality parts.
I really really wanted the SS as it's perfect for what I want a bike for...but in the back of my head I can't stop thinking..'only £800 more and I can have a Panigale'.....this bike SHOULD have been released at around £3000 cheaper than the Panigale and not £800.
Ducati have seriously dropped the ball on this model regarding the price. Nobody can justify having the SS when the Panigale is only a fraction dearer
So you want a bike that comes with Ohlins Suspension to be priced at 12k with 113hp & 70 ft lbs of torque, Adjustable windscreen, 463lbs, every electronic Aid Common to most bikes, Anti-Theft, and SSSA...
I don't know what to tell you guy...but anyone who knows about the supersport.. they aren't looking at the Panigale anyway.... LOL
Say it with me: All day sportbike
Oh man it is so great to see how much fun you have on those roads ! It has been raining so much in NorCal that I can't wait to get the bike out this weekend again. Thanks for sharing the fun moments :D
just bought one 2018 mod, i couldn't agree more with this review 🙂
Mines a Supersport with quickshifter and termignoni exhaust fitted afterwards by ducati dealership in norway
It sounds amazing and for a newbie like me its really nice to have one of the easiest bikes ever, ive driven bullets, mopeds, yamaha mt07 and its easier to handle than honda cbr 250 indian version which i drove alot in india! blew my mind! love the windscreen, good seating for 2 and you can easily turn the backseat into storage with aftermarket bags.
The best is the looks, if you havent seen one in real life, dont even dare judge it ! its a beauty in red with black accessory!
Best summary of the bike i have seen so far. manufacturers need to hire you more often. i feel like i just test rode it myself
Love these last few track/street reviews!
Beautiful bike, back to basics with style and finesse. Definitely getting one!
Nice review, as always. I do like the idea of having one. I can't believe that there are people that think this is ugly. Sure, there are better looking bikes, but ugly! They're not right in the head.
hollowaysteve Believe it, she's a butter face.
It ok to like it tho, different horses, different courses. Have a wheely day.👍
Really liking this one. Finally a decent looking sport touring bike that doesn't look overly goofy amd has a more laid back riding position with clip on bars versus straight bars. I like the S version in white best but prefer the price tag of the base model with a seat cowl and quick shifter. This one is on my radar for the future.
One of the better reviews I've seen on this new machine. I think for an older rider this makes the cut for consideration. Having ridden the Monster my questions would be the heat thrown off by the motor and cooling fan.....and the quick shifter, how'd you like it?
I love this bike! Test rode it and it was great! Can't wait to get one for myself.
So basically Ducati has built a Honda VFR with better electronics and a bit more power. I had a 2004 VFR and now have a 2015 VFR. It always made me wonder why it seemed so few people got the concept of the VFR, and now Ducati has built this. I hope the SuperSport sells well. I think we need more bikes like this.
Great review as always, and an interesting bike. It looks cool (especially with the single sided swing), sounds very Ducati-ish, and seems like a great alternative to a sports naked, like the Monster. I like the price point (both models) as well--slightly overlapping the 959 while offering a more relaxed ride. Good stuff!
Fantastic review! What great roads!
That road has probably been there 1000 years or more. That was almost as good as riding it myself!
Awesome review! can't wait to test one...
Great video, love this bike. Finally a comfortable non naked Ducati!
Glad someone else is making a good sport tourer. To me, they are the most versatile and sensible bike for a lot of riders: those who ride road, maybe commutes, long distance tours, and wants to carve twisties and do it well. These days there aren't too many options.
Bravo Zack. I enjoyed the video. I wish I had a GoPro on my adventure. I was watching your video laughing because most of what you said about the Supersport in real time riding was what I was saying to myself. Full disclosure I sell Ducati, BMW, etc. My adventure was in South Sardinia, Italy. For those of us who ride sport bikes like panigales , s1000rr, R1, ZX10-R, etc, will enjoy this bike for the sport edge of the bike coupled with comfort. For the road the power was plenty. Price point especially for the S model is great. As Zack mentioned in the video the quick shifter up/down was fantastic, along with ohlins suspension superb, even better. My S also had the low mount akrapovic which sounded, as you can guess, wonderful! Again great video Zack! Now you have a similar opinion from a humble salesman. Definitely put it on your shopping list if you like sport coupled with comfort.
Seen and sat on this bike at MCN London, looked fantastic and I will be riding one this spring, can't wait :-)
Great review!
I want the 2017 or 2018 Ducati Supersport S to be my next bike in arctic white.I think it will be out for 2-3 years and than they will stop making it and it will become collectible.I think it's the best bike for the street Ducati has ever made.Ohlins fork and rear shock.Ducati up/down quick shifter.Relaxed comfortable ride that has enough HP and Torque for everything you will encounter.IF i buy this bike.It will be the last motorcycle I ever own for the next 3-4 years and than we will look at the market again. My best friend was drooling over that I might purchase this machine. As he is a old sport bike rider who now has a huge overweight cruiser with floor boards that he tries to keep up in the canyon windy roads. It's crazy.
True to form, a Duc engine sounds awful on video but I'm sure is great in person! Good review as usual Zack, and I'm sure they had to twist your arm to travel to Spain. Terrible. :-)
Also, "gentleman's express" seems a perfect term. Nice one. As a side note, I love the new print format - it was a pleasant surprise receiving my issue this month. Bravo to you guys.
That's funny because I always find them to sound better in person. Different strokes. :)
love it!! that's one of my favorite bike in 2017..either way its the S model or the based your riding it and that color awesome!! 😉👌
Great review - thanks. I'd consider getting one as I'm at that age where getting on a full on supersports bike is neither practical or useful to me. When the sun shines I want to go distances and a supersport just doesn't do it for me any more, even though I still like the looks of them. Thumbs up to Ducati from me then. Really though I'd have to put it up against the Ninja 2017 1000 SX or similar before deciding.
my 04 viffer is this ducs grandfather. the OG (gentlemens express)
Michael Constantin i love the Ducati Supersport ,hence why ím here , but your 04 is the Dukes Father my 97 RC36 is it´s Grandfather.VFR750 does the same thing and arguably sounds better with its gear driven cams V4.
Have not seen the Ducati SuperSports since mid - late 90s. For nothing else it is good to see Ducati release this to the market.
GREAT Video!!!
nice review :)
Great video! Muchas gracias.
I got mine yesterday and I rode it and I love it
Exactly. I've had a few bad bikes but this one seems just right....
LOL at the green flag start. You were the only guy on this 'race day' haha.
That's a nifty little dash. It displays quite a bit of information, and I wonder why Ducati doesn't use it on the Monster 797/821.
What is your mic setup ?
Great content as always :)
Follow the regulars out to San Diego ans checkout the roads around Alpine, Julian, Campo. Lots of great riding out there, It's the one thing I miss when I moved away. Mount Palomar in the fog is always fun.
Reminds me of a great bike by Honda, The Superhawk, VTR1000 which was a sad loss to me.
It's a street bike, it's a street bike, it's a street bike.
Let's name it Supersport.
That road is superb. Twisty and smooth too. I wasn't even thinking of the bike. I was just thinking I've gotta have a go on that road on any bike. I'm UK so it's achievable for me to visit.
Give us the heads up please Zack.
You must of made at least a mental note of it.
I tried an MT09 SP, a CB10000R etc etc. Loved the MT09, disliked the CB10000R and tried the Ducati. Now own it because it’s completely different from my Blackbird which I love dearly. The Blackbird is my idea of a perfect bike. Docile at low speed and insane when you wind it up , handles like it’s on rails but heavy and a bit scrunched up even with bar risers, The Ducati is light and flickable, has loads of torque and on normal roads will give any super bike a run for it’s money. It’s not slow at all and is loads of fun. The handling is superb.
Would you say the half fairings and windscreen offer a considerable/noticeable improvement in wind and buffeting reduction over a fully naked Monster for instance? In the video, you didn't sound completely convinced in the windscreens efficacy. If I were to choose between a new Monster 1200S and a Supersport S, one of my main decision factors would be wind control. I could sacrifice the M1200's extra power if the fairings and windscreen on the SS make a considerable difference, but not if the difference is marginal.
Nice review. Where in Spain is this road?
flying fast today sir
I have this S model in red, what a great bike...couldn't fault it on the test ride so bought one at my Ducati shop.
ChuckNinja Kawasaki
How is it so far?
@@reerbaadia1896 apologies I’ve just seen your reply after 3 years 😩. I still have my ducati and it’s been awesome , still in excellent condition with just 7k miles. I also ride a bmw f850gs hence why the mileage is low. Did you get one ?
What is the green light that's constantly on?? Looks like the neutral light and that would drive me nuts. Otherwise I really like the bike and thinks it looks pretty good for just an everyday sportbike.
Enjoyed to video, Zack. But please, if you get a chance, do an "MC Commute" video on the Multistrada 950. Thanks!
Ruptured two discs in my lower back can’t ride sport bikes anymore this is my porn I watch other people I tried Harley Indian victory the big Japanese cruisers just the most boring and useless machines ever devised so I bought an old cuda and over the years I have built a beautiful car nothin original left on the car except the badges and then Ducati god bless them built the Diavel and I can sit on it for hours now I’m a happy man
I've been looking for a replacement for my 20 year old Ducati ST2. I didn't think there was anything like it anymore. The ST2 is a small, simple and light weight sport tourer with a slightly hard edge (sporty riding position) to it. I can put the bags on it, ride it comfortably 500 or 1000 miles to get to the twisties, and then when I get there, I'm on a great looking, sporty bike that doesn't compromise the sport riding. This SuperSport is an ST2 20 years later. I'm probably going to sell my 848EVO (too fast and uncomfortable) and my ST2 (getting old) and get one of these.
Dude that bike is pretty dang sweet.
Zack Courts and Ari Henning, when are you guys bringing out some more on two wheels videos. I am waiting in anticipation. There are so much new bikes like the new CBR, the new GXSR and what about the new BMW GS 310 R. Can't wait to see some more great videos from you
dont forget the new ktms
Stay tuned! We're working away on our GSXR episode and it should be out next week.
Great!
what do you think about the vibration?the mid range seemed to have lots of vibes when i rode it but it was not broken in
I hope you do something out of the ordinary such as trying out the Harley Davidson Roadster as it would be greatly interesting comparing it to superbikes, a sportbike contender from a famous cruiser company. Oh and envy working in Orange County, specifically Irvine as you're probably a great company to work for vs the other companies in Irvine that generally do suck to work for.
I know this would be boring but could you make a video on how to safely ride on highways and split lanes in california traffic.
Love Ducati
I've really been warming up to the SS. I wouldn't mind something a little more up to date, better suspension, faster than my S2R1000 and a little more street friendly than the 1098S
iv been on theses roads twice with my sv 650s, the spain is awesome country to ride. i Did last picos de europa, north of spain just take 2 days with a pause in a hotel. That was awesome, you should go ride there. Where are that road on the vids, close to sevilla ? in 2014 i did a big trip around spain but it was only highways... i should go back to discover and spend more time in that beautiful country. cheers awesme video
forget the bike. your riding skills are off the roof!!!!
Hi! What about the ignition key, isn't it to close of the helmet while speeding?
Spot on for the street. But, I could just get a CBR650F used for 5500. DUC is better for track days though. It's a Ducati so you get the cool factor and going to dealers on weekends is fun. I really like the motor and riding position. Like my old VFR, something you can ride and ride and ride.
Zack would love it if u did a mc commute on a monster 821
i hope they will make a 1200 version of thiss
Sounds like it would compete with the Honda VFR800. Which doesn't seem to sell real well these days...
damn! thats a good looking bike.
now is it just me or is triumphs electronics and full color display much better?
Something about the height of those clipons with the shape of the cowl and screen keeps making me think you're on a cbr125
TobiasProtector was about to say the same
Totally! The red doesn't help either
TobiasProtector i would change any day haha
clip on that want to be clip on but they are nothing else than an handlebar slip in half for the look
i had a fz6r with the same concept. as much as it was comfortable it looked worse than a plain naked bike.
It’s a Ducati, has to be flame red. I’d get the deluxe version for the OHLINS. It’s the sort of sport/road bike I’d own to go up and down a road like that sun-up to lunch - then again on the way home. Fuel tank is a bit small for touring . The bike has soul. That makes up for imperfections like the rubbish mirrors.
If you want to stop the vibration in the mirrors when you want to see what’s going on behind you,
pull the clutch in for a quick second 🎼🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Please tell me you edited out the cars, that road just wow
i like this bike, an SV1000 very close specs and nice looking, and the maintenance shedule is a jewel... but damn it's costly, you can get an MT 10 for that price, even cheaper
Probably the only Ducati I'd buy right now on principle, would be the new Monster 797 or a used 821. Both have the least oversquare engine Ducati sells and should be more entertaining to flog around the streets. That 803cc 2-valve engine is the last lump they make that sounds tough with a proper exhaust. The LC 4-valve motors have seemed to soften the whump.
Have an idea, test owner bikes with mods, i.e: Brakes, Suspension, ECU flash etc over the standard bike.
Hi I looking forward to buy a SS939 next year, my only concern is the realibility, im living at 700km to the nearest ducati dealer so i don't wan to go there 10 time a year.. any of you guy had trouble ?
Will it shake too much to control? Seems like hard to hold it..
KEY QUESTION YOU MISSED: Which of the 2 should I buy Standard or S? Thanks!
5 years later and he still hasn't answered your question. Unfortunately UA-cam is plagued with creators who have no interest in taking any kind of interaction with their subscribers
Got my S, first Ducati. This bike is absolutely perfect for the street. I like most got an absolutely monster of a liter bike, never used the potential, numb ass, uncomfortable...but I was cool?🤨 150 miles per tank (ish) depends on you wrist. I’m getting old and this bike let’s me play and be comfy, by the time it’s time to fuel up, you get to stretch...perfect timing. Ducs are expensive to maintain do your research! If you can swing it, don’t hesitate. If not, save up, just worth it! If your young and have the need to hit Mach 10, get the r1 and learn the hard way, I will see you in a few years on a sports tour (ish) we’ve all been there. Stay safe all!
they had no bike in mind when developing this bike??! sounds like a nice Italian VFR800 to me.
looks like something i would like though :)
I hate the bike, but this is by far the best review of it... Hands down. Good job.
I test drove this bike a few weeks ago and it's a blast. It handles better than most sport-touring bikes, it's got all the power you could ever want on the street, and it's ridiculously comfortable and confidence-inspiring. Anyone who is shit-talking this bike is a squid.
That said, I hate the name. I don't care that it's based on a previous bike. Supersport means something else, and it's exactly the opposite of what Ducati wants to market this bike as.
Does it vibrate a lot like other 2 cylinder bikes?
@@reinterpret_cast Well it vibrates more than your typical Japanese 4, but it's really not bad.
Do for the track, this or a 959?
Wow, you described this EXACTLY as ChaseOn2Wheels did when he just did his first ride, hahaha.
MC Commute - 2017 Ducati Multistrada 950 video soon?
How about a commute on a Ducati Diavel or XDiavel???
Hello is this good for beginners if I put the ride mode to urban/ rain mode. I was initially gonna get ninja 650 but this is way cooler and will last me longer. What do you think? I do have some experience.
Hello quick silver, so what was your choice back then? Did you buy the Ducati Supersport? Could you share your eventual experience? Would you recommend it for beginners? Thanks for your answer. M.
Does this have quick shift or manual shifting or both?
I want that road!
Feels like a moto vlog but with no meme bullshjt. The meme stuff drives me away. Thanks for making a clean video 👌🏼una bella moto
I've heard now several times that this bike is the successor to the Honda CBR600F series bikes or the VFR series of bikes. On the surface this would seem natural or plausible.
However, as a former owner of a beloved CBR600F2 model, the DucSS simply is in a different category. I've never had or ridden any VFR but I would be willing to bet that the same sentiment would be expressed by owners, past and present of those models as well.
Take what I say with a grain of salt: I only got to sit on the bike, while on a paddock stand and, It was no where near as comfortable or accommodating as my CBR600F2. The DucSS is a sport bike with a slightly higher handle bar. I was stretched out and reaching for the bars.
I'm a short guy as well and the seat height, although given the paddock stand, made the bike too tall for me. I was extremely uncomfortable and had no confidence while just sitting on the DucSS. Seriously I think the Panigale would have been a better choice. I swear there was only an inch of difference in any dimension.
Zack seemed to have fun and I will of course re-evaluate the bike during a test ride in a few weeks but 2 of it's competitors immediately afterwards were night and day different. The Triumph Speed Triple 765 and the Kawasaki Z900. I felt so comfortable and confident on those. We'll see come test ride season.
Meh If it's as aggressive as the Latest model VFR800 there should be no issues... Owner of 2 VFR800s and VFR1200... The aggressive stance inspires more confidence for me, but Too aggressive and I just can't take it for long.
19:10 like a vfr or sprint st?
I'm almost 60 and have always wanted a sport bike..This might be what I'm looking for..
A bike like this and identical to this one is for sale by me ... I’ll have to look it up again bc of year you said.
Italians do it on road courses ..lol
Nice bike! but it feels like it shake a lot on the track (just seeing the handlebars, or is it the track's impurities?). thinking about steering dampers ^^
MK 2 he was on the curbing on corner exit that's why
Well that part is obvious, but in other places it shakes too, look from 1:50, the whole right corner and look at the handlebars
excellent review im 37 years old new rider with a 696 and for my rides with friends i guess after this review supersport s is the right choice between peice different between base version and the s model.i think it worth it thabks again
I’ve been riding a VFR and this looks like an excellent upgrade.
PLZ DO AN MC COMMUTE ON THE TRIUMPH DAYTONA 675R
I have yet to stumble upon a review on this bike that compares it to its closest competitor, Monster 821! Could you please point that out? Especially handing, and dimensions while you're riding it.
Monster 821 is not even it's closest competitor if at all... It's competitors are
VFR800
GSX1000F
Ninja1000
Veloce800
SuperDukeGT
FJ09
FJR1300
F800GT
R1200RS
K1300S
Stradale800
Anything outside of those bikes are not even in the same market guy. The bikes I named are all sport touring bikes.
+Texarmageddon I understand you completely, but the bike is based on a Monster's frame and pays a lot of resemblance to it. The fairing and higher clip-ons dont really mean its a dedicated sports touring bike. Thanks for your response :)
Where in Spain are these roads?
My next Bike I think
Something bugs me a little bit about this category ducati claims is one of its own because sport / tourer motorcycle / a bit supersport does exist with the triumph sprint St 1050 and the vfr800/1200... But nice one though looks quite good like every ducati!
Triumph Sprint is no longer sold in any country/Continent .... VFR1200 is also no longer sold...
There is the VFR800, but that bike is quite pricey in Deluxe form and comparing it to the SS .. it quickly becomes overpriced for what you get compared to the Duc.
Best comparisons would be the Ninja 1000 and the GSX1000F
whats the top speed on this bike?
Can you remeber any of those cool roads? would love to try them for myself.
Spain got all the EU road fixing money... UK nada. I remember riding in Spain and seeing signs all over saying how their brilliant roads were payed for out of EU coffers. Perhaps if the UK had been given some money to fix our roads we may have felt that it was worth staying in the EU.
