After episode 8, I had to put this anime in my top 10. It's honestly a masterpiece at this point. Everything just works. It surprises me that this show isn't more popular than One Punch Man. I think it's better in every way.
my top five anime on my list. . . . 5 - Tensei shitara slime datta ken 4 - Dororo 3 - One punchman 2 - mob psycho 100 and my top one is 1 - ATTACK ON TITAN
Yeah they are also well-written. I specially love how Serizawa parallels Mob and i like the complexity of Ritsu's feelings towards Mob, but they really can't compare to the development Mob and Reigen go through in the whole series (up to the manga)
I'm curious if you've read the manga, because nearly all of this is down to One's brilliant writing and the overall arc he's setting Mob up for by this seasons end. To accomplish the narrative role Mob is gonna play in this seasons arc, Mob needed to grow a lot from the kid who was using as his powers as a last resort to save his friend until he was told it was 'okay to run away' by Reigan. A small spoiler warning but only for the episodes already out but He needed to- episode 1) see it was important to hold things he thought were special and /act on his emotions/, and that his powers indeed helped with that, they could be a force for good. episode 2-3) realise more about the complexity of his situation as an esper, the power he had an esper ranging beyond what he'd been using them for at this point and the evil that could be done with said powers depending on what he chose to do with them. 4-5) The mogami arc taught A lot, from helping him realise a whole new perspective of how Cruel and lonely the world can be, to being grateful for his situation/family/friends and how important they are to him. And most importantly that /His/ powers can Save people, and people Can /change/. He's changed as a result of all this, and he can help others to as well. 6-7) Was helping him get independence from Reigan, which he really needed. And realising he Has grown up. And being recognised that he has, and because of this its okay for him to make choices by himself, to do things for himself. Now we're onto probably the final arc, what all this growth and development was building up to- and for him to make the choices that he does in the next few episodes, it was crucial he went through all the other stuff and stated clearly to the audience that He has grown up and changed, or else it'd feel unbelievable to jump from season 1s finale to season 2s. Regardless to say, Bones is handling it tremendously well aside from probably having an episode cap which meant mogami arc was a little rushed in my opinion. But Episode 6-7 really hit me with how amazingly they were paced and I'm so excited to see how they handle the final arc. (woops long message but mostly, tldr One is a great writer and bones is handling his story very well)
One thing to consider is that the source material was already done before the anime was adapting it. So what your calling season 2 is really part 2 out of (probably) 3 and there's no need to do filler like show like Dragon Ball had to.

Gotta give it to ONE, how does one guy make two absolutely amazing and brilliant stories simultaneously that are translated passionately and gorgeously by manga and anime studios, this guy is truly fucking brilliant.
It also helps that Bones has followed the manga pretty much panel for panel both seasons, but also made it it's own. You're in for a wild ride the rest of the season! There's so much more to cover and there's only... 4 episodes left, right? That studio is a genius, being able to pace it in such a way that it fits in 2 single core seasons
I wouldn't call season 2 a reinvention. Season 2 is more of a natural progression. Everything season 2 does feels like this is how the character would and should evolve in time. It's not giving us more of the same from season one because that's in these characters' past. It's experiences not episodes. Everything that happened earlier is what makes the characters what they are now and that is why season 2 works. It's the most natural continuation of a story that works off of seasons I think I've ever seen.
I like how mob, in one of his s2 battles, finally drops his emotionless face and actually shows what he is feeling with his eyes. Even if it was only for one episode so far, it felt like a huge step for mob

I feel like sometimes when you go through and binge watch an older show, you kind of get lost in it, and it fails to feel like something that, at one point in time, came out in incremental installments. arcs might have climaxes, and ops might change, but if the story is well written, the shift between arcs feels like a natural progression for the story to take. and I think Mob Psycho 100 is heading in that direction. sometimes it feels as though update culture kind of changes the tone of certain stories. when there's a new episode each week, you experience it with everyone for the first time, and you get plenty of time to dissect and reflect upon what you just saw. but when you binge something, you see the story as one solid picture. in your own everyday existence, life happens to you constantly with no interruptions. binging a show really pulls you into a world and keeps you there, and when a story builds up momentum, you get to keep the ball rolling. and beyond that, with Mob Psycho 100, I think there's this feeling of separation between the first and second seasons, which might not be so distinct once both seasons are out and you have the option to binge them back to back. I think it's not really fair to judge whether season one is better than season two... season two wouldn't be near as good without season one. the reason why both seasons work as a unified story is because, while season one had it's own buildup and climax, season one also functions, in its entirety, as buildup for season two. and a good story will layer its buildup and payoff moments. each episode has them, but so does each season, and hopefully, so does the whole story once it's complete. the structure is strong because the building blocks themselves are strong. what makes these characters realistic is the fact that they started different than how they are now. and that means that, early in their stories, they might be doing things and learning things that seem fundamental and basic in comparison to their more complex growth later on. but if you hadn't watched them learn those things, and just took it for granted that they started out at least that mature already, then the progression feels less like growth, and more like basic activity. so, looking back, the characters might seem less developed in the earlier seasons... but it's sort of like looking back on yourself in middle school. you have to start out a little underdeveloped, so that it really means something when you grow up. and I think the real magic of Mob Psycho 100, is the fact that the first season started so strong and still found ways to grow the characters. it started with a good thing and still found a way to get better.

Yess, even characters we only get to see for one episode or less are much more fleshed out compared to some protagonists of other anime.
