Me too. I combine what I learn from MangoldProject (piano), with what I learn from Jens Larson (guitar) to get a better understanding of music theory in general. Sometimes I don't understand what Jens is saying, so I search for a similar tutorial on the MangoldProject channel - it really helps.
You're doing it right! That's good! I also play guitar but find applying many of my studies to the piano keyboard makes understanding theory topics a lot easier as the piano keyboard is laid out in a very straight forward way! Good luck in your studies!
Appreciate Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for learning piano fast without the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my buddy finally got cool success with it. #advanced jazz chords piano
Wow thank you so much! I'm so glad got to finally figure this out! This is one of the most beautiful things to do to a progression in the world when not overdone in my opinion.
I'm so glad I've found your channel! You are an amazing teacher. I'm going to check on the Anomalie vid right now, I've recently learned of his music and now it's pretty much all I listen to these days. Thank you so much for giving us, pianists and aspiring pianists such valuable tools!!!
I think ur explaining the family of four minors that Barry Harris taught. Taking ur example of D minor, if u form a Ddminished 7 on the shared D root note, anyone of those in the diminished chord can be substituted for the original Dminor 7 chord. As you’ve shown in this vid, Fmin, Abmin and Bmin would all be examples.
I wish you'd gone a bit deeper into why the dm to fm to A♭works so well. dm is D-F-A-C-E, leading to fm with is F-A♭-C-E♭-G. The voice leading here is very strong as the D resolves up to E♭ and the A resolves down to the A♭, which is contrary motion and is the same basic voice leading you have in dominant resolution. The same is true going from fm to A♭m, whereby F resolves up to G♭ and C resolves down to C♭. Contrary motion resolution by half step is strong voice leading and I think it's the secret sauce of the mediant sequence with modal borrowing.
Sorry, where is the anaysis of the piece by Anomalie? I think I know exactly which passage in Velours you referred to, and I've been searching for an analysis of that bit since forever! Also: great class!
Thank you for the tutorial, it’s really helpful and insightful. I have a question: At 2:41 how come it isn’t an F major rather than F minor (7) because you’re going up a third in the d minor? Thanks:))
the coolness of the technique in this vid is a way if "playing outside", doing notes outside the scale to get super jazzy. Noah kellman has some good vids you can look up about it so what he's doing here is transposing the whole chord regardless of the scale it was originally in to get a cooler more modern outside sound instead of a more boring "inside" sound
I liked this idea quite a bit, but the term of "modal sequencing" is throwing me - isn't it just the axis of b3 substitutions (and a tritone sub) as Coltrane and others did? Can someone 'splain me how this is "modal"? Thanks.
Nice, although I knew this tricks and I call it the same still it is very helpfull and inspiring! You bring the creative element in the Ring I like that!
Thanks MangoldProject. In the first part you showed us, would it be suitable to put a "B flat dominant 13" between the "F minor" and the "A flat minor" (which would add the out-of-key "dominant 5" into the modulated part of the progression)?
But I should say that you don't always have enough time to squeeze in all those chords, especially if you are reharmonizing and existing tune and only have X bars.
@@kaitobellamy7172 Thanks - I'll be very careful of when to implement it - more likely in the creation of a song rather than in real-time improvisation.
Hey Mangold.. long time no chat.. i know that you mention that you did not advertise much with your channel but do you know anywhere apart from Facebook and reddit where i can promote my lessons?
@@MangoldProject but you are a good teacher. . I guess i just have to wait too but hope that someone would check out my piano lessons for kids based on the bastien series
The Fm is a G in negative harmony, right? So it has the same function? Then the Abm is a minor 5th cadence to the tritone substitution, which obviously resolves to the tonic C. Is that correct? Just trying to get my head around it. I've heard some people saying that negative harmony is bullshit before
Thank you for once again offering such inspiring content! I really love the way you explain things.
Thanks Dave. Next week: minor jazz!

Wow, you make the hard things easy , thank you .
I would say I make the complex things simple, but not necessarily easy: you still need to practice a lot to internalize this!
Absolutely right,
This course is very very very beneficial
Watched for about a minute then subscribed! Great explanation and nice playing. Very helpful. Thank you!
Welcome about Nathaniel.

You could also run a Bb minor with the 2-5. Awesome video 👍
Yes. Possibilities and variations are quite endless.
This substitution set really add some beautiful colors!
You are incredible.
first to say thanks!
last to master this in 12 keys :3
Well, technically since you're mostly moving in minor thirds you only need to master this in three keys!
@@MangoldProject ahhh diminished groups. I'd love a tutorial on the 6th diminished scale, it's grouped the same way.

Who knows? This is an old video from five years ago, I barely remember even what's going on :)
Nice, but I’m not convinced about your D natural added to Db7. It doesn’t work for me.

Its using modal interchange i think using f minor instead of major and b minor instead of diminished

You could but by doing so, you'll break the parallel motion of minor third done through the ii-iv-vib
