The little "modal interchaaaaange" at the beginning still gets randomly stuck in my head two years on
FRIEND: “Bro sick chord suggestion on that jam!”
My brain: MODAL INTERCHANGEEEEEE
AHAHAHAH me too
Just came back to this 4 years later just for the intro
Anytime I see a train station with Interchange in the name I sing X Interchange to this tune 😂
SAME. ITS BEEN FIVE YEARS SEND HELP
this give me 10 year more of my life expectancy
That's what *you* think! toot-toot
That is because you eat fruit, not because of modal interchange.
I lost 10 years trying to read that
Yes!!!!!
An entire 4 years of college level composition and theory in a little over 4 minutes. Very impressive. God bless UA-cam.
I cannot believe this is 6 years old and I haven't seen this somehow. The detail in everything from arrangement in tandem with your voice and the editing itself is so crazy.
i cannot believe i am 6 years old and haven't seen this somehow. where did my gold fish go
this.
Yes. It’s crazy clear and that’s what I need
mm yes totally… rain world pfp spotted
same and its so fun, im jost bobbing my head while lsitening
I love how the whole video was in tempo
That was the only way he could make it all possible

Same here dude! :D
Truth, Sandor Dude.
when the video quality is so high that just saying the title of the video make you sub the channel.
lmao samee
I'm yelling out loud every time he throws a different chord in there. This shit is insane
Haha. I thought I was the only one. I go "Whooh" every time.
that Db maj7 chord was my ultimate woah moment
Thsi video is very adhd friendly lol
IT is be very r be e easy t for yuo e f t watch whe ndrunk and have ahdd and autsisms too
There are a bunch of UA-cam tutorial videos that spend 4:25 getting as far as "welcome to another episode and today I'm going to tell you about...". Thank you for cramming so much into so little time.
can you show me the better tutorial of the modal interchange?
Wonderful
Yes a lot of useful info for sure. I find it easier to pause it at certain points to digest the info & take notes, otherwise it goes too fast for an absolute beginner (such as myself).
and 3 more minutes asking you to "subscribe to my channel, to my gf channel, to my gf side-nigga's channel, check my patreon, my online store, my uncle Joe's spotify, pet my dog and do a backflip. Now, back to the video"
The audio examples in this video made it much more understandable. The fact that this wasn't too in-depth made it easier to follow along.
I love the fact how there are two comments on the top side to side, one saying how they wish this was more in depth and the other saying it is great how it is not so in depth. Makes you see how people perceive things differently on the same subject.
How can it have taken me 6 years for the algorithm to deliver me this essential video?
A lot of people come here and demand "more content like this". What they don't realize is that this actually goes beyond education; this video is an artwork in and of itself. Myles' smooth voice, the well-toned drums, the tightly interlocked fills hitting just before the end of the speech, the examples of modal interchange themselves and that brilliant melody work together to put this video in the realm of spoken word music.
i think everyone realized this i mean it’s kind of obvious
Many demand , but little are giving back .
@@crouchjump5787tbf I can’t speak for anyone else but I don’t think I’m ready to write something like this. It would be a little hard to “give back” in this way
This is honestly the best presented Music Theory video I have ever seen on YT. Concise, funny and the animation and music accompaniment is fantastic. I wish it were a *little* more in depth but in any case I hope it's the beginning of something really special.
sanctu TRUE STORY
amazingly coordination of explication and examples!
Seriously this is an amazingly well done video.
EXOTIC COLORS
Agree 100% and couldn't say it better myself. We need more of this.
This is THE best music theory video I have ever seen. It's just revolutionary, a leap ahead of the usual stuff. Unbelievable! Please, create more videos like this! :) Bravissimi!!!!
Easy boy, nothing revolutionary here. Just an ANCIENT concept explained like you were 5yo lol Any decent teacher will make you understand this content in 30 minutes. Stop being cheap and get proper education.
Somebody is W O K E
D. Corso I think he meant that it was revolutionary in sense of video designing and editing, and actually, I wouldn't say that this kinda theory-playing stuff will necessarily work faster with a teacher than a video like this, I mean, two different environments and ways of teaching. Anyway, practice is the most important part of learning
D. Corso he meant the actual lesson itself was revolutionary, not the theory dumbass
That is a fully grown man--that "boy" sounded condescending as fuck. Tsk tsk.
So good. "Only scratched the surface" he says, but it's already far beyond any explanations I've seen before, and it was only 4 minutes long! Thank you. Awesome.
It looks like it's been said a million times already but I'll say it again, that is one of the best modal and music theory explanations I've ever seen on UA-cam. Concise yet full of great examples packaged in a lovely and engaging presentation. Love how the jam musically changes with each point!
agreement.
Great production and great information! I can't say there are many youtube educators out there with quality near this. Can't wait for more!
This page is that of a band, so it's unlikely; They'll probably do these very sporadically.
Joshua Mallard this is the BEST MUSIC PRODUCTION VIDEO LESSON i have ever seen. so fun, so interesting, so inspiring.
fuck
indeed
Can't agree more!
try Adam Neely
Woah, this is just fantastic! Keep up the good work!
Still fresh as a daisy in 2023. Not only is modeal interchange really inspiring musically, as a musician, keeping the beat going all the way through the video is such a great dopamine hit
The production quality and content flow of this video is so good that I want you retire a multi-millionaire at age 35.
Damn this video is really REALLY well made!!! no basic stuff, straight to the point, very informative and presented visually and musically sooo perfectly!! Love it, subscribed immediately!! also the fact that you structured the whole thing as one long song with explanation is such a creative format! :)
my words exactly
You have ticked every box in the "my content is easily digestible". Clear, clean and precise. What a brilliant video
That's the best explanation about modal music that I've ever found. Thanks a lot!
How the fuck is this video so good ? Perfect rhythm, balance, nice voice... just WOW
Very well formatted, extremely concise, and clean presentation. I just learned that I've been doing this for a while, but I didn't know much of the theory behind it or the name to put to it. Thank you!
The word I think you're looking for is Synesthesia.
i love when i find videos like this, its unbelievable and i never understood why most musicians talk harmony without mentioning melody, i mean, its all one big package!!! great video!
I’m surprised I never saw this video, since it’s already been around for 6 years already, but, truth be told, you are spot on. Modal interchange, (and other techniques) has always been magical in my mind, as staying diatonic is limiting without a doubt.
This is one of my favorite UA-cam videos ever. I love how the examples given in the video fit in perfectly with the backing track.
This is the best video I have ever seen on modal interchange. Holy snap dude, awesome job.
Please do more of these man! So concise and well presented- honestly the best lesson of any kind I've seen on UA-cam. Subscribed! Can't wait for more!
I think is one of my favorite videos on music I’ve ever watched in my life! Very well made and I love the constant drum beat in the background which makes it feel like the whole video is a song. Great job and thank you for this! It’s super helpful
Man this video is 6 years old as of rn and is 10/10 for quality. The drums in the back turning into the focal point is amazing. Keep on keepin on brotha
This is fantastic, easy to understand, and the soundtrack that doubles as an audible example knocked it out of the park!
You explained such a complex concept in not even a simple manner, just an easy to understand manner. I feel like I just learned a lot more than way more videos have taught me because of the way you present it! Also having a backing track playing the whole time that occasionally fills and goes into the musical examples you show really helped string it all together, this video is put together like a perfect song.
Everything about this video is absolutely amazing! I also love the constant beat in the background. Keep up the great work!

Music with Myles dude your tutorials are really really amazing! I love it :)
Music with Myles
Thank you.
Hey Myles, I loved this!!! So, Im pretty familiar with music theory, and this gave me an amazing way to look at things that I didn't really understand!!! One question though, and I'll try to be brief, because its actually pretty simple. So, Im a huge radiohead fan, and they obviously utilize this technique to perfection--but in the examples you use; and the examples i can create, use a lot of chord extensions which makes this process a lot smoother and easier, which is why i think Jazz can work so well (because it allows you to connect those modes). Do you have any comments on utlizing this type of techniques with more simple chords??? So for example, a i, III, VII, VI chord progression....if i swap out a iii for the III from the ionian...without adding extensions it can be super jarring....I guess i was wondering if you had any ideas about this??? Regardless, this is an amazing video, and I had never thought about this in such a simplistic (in a minimalist) way before. SOOO many kudos.
Can you recommend some books?
Very informative and an excellent presentation which can be of real value to a jazz player like myself.
Amazing job designing this presentation! Every single frame was perfectly thought through. Thank you
This kind of videos will get you 500k subs in no time.
They will not, because people like looking for shit retarded videos more ( pranks, challanges ) than on videos that give them knowledge.
*It will attract 500k people who care about theory and enjoy it
(To Misiek)
Dude, honestly, this was the best and coolest lesson I've ever seen. Thank you, you rock!
There's so much I love about this video, please make this a series!
Amazing presentation, I think you almost reached the ultimate perfection of how to teach music theory. It's absolutely practical with the constanc music example.
Please continue making these!
Love this lesson. Minimalist, easy, and relaxing at the same ways. Good job
I absolutely love the way this video is structured, especially with the endless drum groove makes it so much more engaging
Que genial que cada vez más canales de música se preocupen por subtitular al español sus videos. Muchísimas gracias a todos esos canales que ensañan musica no solo a su público anglosajón, sino también a los hispanos.
Saludos desde México
This is fantastic! I'll definitely have to explore this more!
Man ! You've come with the perfect structure of video. Rythm, explanation, timing... It's the new standard everyone should use to explain music !
Finally someone who doesn't just talk but moves forward! Love you!
This is literally going to transcend my chord progression structure by 100 fold. This actually makes beginning a song fun, and not so overwhelming. I hate building random chords from a singular scale.
This is great ^^
Wow i love the constant flow of this video whilst being short and informative, thanks
now THATS how you present music theory in an engaging way! incredibly good video
You should make a video specifically about the seven modes of music and how they sound normally and the how they'd sound in different contexts
that progression at 1:17 gives me such heavy Nujabes vibes, I'm in love.
was maj7 -> -7(b5) -> maj7 his trick all along?
True!
I think this video finally made me understand why the modes are important. Whole new level unlocked, haven't had a breakthrough like this in five years. Thank you!!
This video is made amazingly good. I really like the constant playing background beat, that allows these gorgeous transitions between your speech and the chord examples! This video is basically a music piece itself!
"Prettyyy cooooll"
I was just wondering how I was using chords outside of the key lol
This is the best straight forward video to launch yourself into colorful chords! I love this!
I love your production style! A music theory based channel that keeps everything on a constant beat makes so much sense and is so original. Keep up this awesomeness!
I swear I just eargasmed at 1:21
Me too!
2:42 for me. I literally had to write it down so I can use it in a song
The D-7b5 literally made my heart melt
#xmas
You should listen to more jazz then
I've been playing Synth since 10 years atleast now, I do these things unknowingly. But when you put in in words, I went like "WHAT THE HOLY F**K?!" Man, that was an eye opener. Kudos from India!
This is insane, I am glad I found this channel. Thank you Mister!
I love how you get right down to business in your video. I never found myself getting bored and you made the material very easy to understand. Keep up the awesome work!
Please do more chord lessons.Atmospheric or emotional progressions such as dark,mysterious,melancholic,epic,godly,inter-dimensional would be nice.
Dminor7flat5 = B flat 9 = F minor 6= A flat 6#11....👍
I love the pulse of this video ! its so well constructued
This is one of THE best videos on this topic. It's straightforward while being playful, engaging, and very, very informative. Do more! Many, many more!!
So, jazz? Right?
You know AC/DC used modes? About as far from jazz as you can get, right? inserting COLOR in a chord progression doesn't necessarily have to make it any genre of music. That's going to have much more to do with rhythm, instrument choices, etc.
nope, the modes and modal interchange were completely theorized in so-called classical music evolving from the greek and the church modes
daaronk You know, my original comment was just a joke but that’s actually really interesting. I haven’t thought about it that way.
@@PanikingCamel was it a joke? i guess i fell for it then haha but that surprises me a bit if you are a musician... it´s usually non-musicians who are not aware of the history of western music ... but glad it gave you some new information ...it happens often though that we take something for granted and then discover some info that alters how we perceive it
Me: **sees UA-cam recommend me a music theory video** alright cool let's watch this!
UA-cam video: **is amazing**
Me: Wow this is great! I'm gonna subscribe!
Me: **as I go to click on subscribe, I see the channel's name** Native Construct?! That's one of my favorite bands!!
Hi I love you guys! Please keep making more awesome videos and music! (Speaking of which, when's your next album coming out?)
Well god damn, this was the best channel find of the year for me. Your lessons are incredible and very entertaining!!! Thank you so much!
wow!!! THAT is how teaching should be! amazing work!
This is an awesome and super helpful video. What an awesome concept! Is there anywhere to download that chart with all the modes based on C with their respective chords and qualities?
This works for me in Firefox:
If you click with right mouse button on the paused video, it will give you the contextual menu of youtube, but clicking right mouse a second time will give you HTML5 player's default context menu. There you can choose the option to save the frame as a .jpg
Awesome, thanks!
It took me 10 minutes of work : paper and pencil ! (incredible, no ? ...)
Try this Excel spreadsheet I made inspired by this awesome video.. Just enter ANY NOTE in cell "D5". Download safe! www.dropbox.com/s/167zly8oh4hdj9j/Modal%20Interchange%20rev%2004-Jul-17.xls?dl=0
Tnaks a lot bro
What music program did you use for this?
He probably used multiple audio/music programs, one for the notation and one for the actual creation of the music and sounds heard in the video.
Then there was a video editor/animation program where the majority of the time and work was spent (probably).
Thoroughly enjoyed. Even so much more the second time around after a couple years past.
I have been looking for someone like you for a long time. Beautiful video and the music was sublime!
I'd wish you'd make the minor chords lowercase as well.
That's just me lol
Haah; yup..
Make more
Mind blown. Thanks.
I love the style of this, thank you!
Awesome video! I've always been curious on this subject, but one question. When you are picking a different mode (say C Ionian to C locrian) how do you determine what chords are maj/min in the Locrian mode? Do you just start from C and find your 3rd and 5th or 7th in that mode and that'll determine what it is? Thank you!
That's what I thought, just needed someone else to say it haha, thank you man!
Yeah exactly !! But it gets funky with melodic minor modes because sometimes you can have more than one quality chord starting on the same note.
So basically I can use any chord I want, any time I want
I waa thinling the same but if you have the progression : C E7. F . Is E7 a modal interchange, no. Is anothee type of analysis wich I dont know....
@Commenter in a Box if so, Where would the Am be? Unless E7 does not resolve to the VI. In that case It Is like you said. Agree on that?
@@joseg.g897 E7 resolves into F because it shares 2 notes with Am, A and C. If it's an Fmaj7 chord then it has all the notes of Am, A C E (plus the F in the bass) and that's why it works
Concise and on point thank you for this!!!
Man this video is just fantastic.... thanks for your hard working!!!
The simplest in youtube. Sht still hard af to understand. Really want to learn but its too damn hard. Anyone have tips to learn this ?
Take a piece of paper. make notes. At first learn basics of scales and modes and how to harmonize them. At least that's what Im doing currently, I think its good way to start.
If you already know music theory, learn about tonicization and modulation then learn about the modes, borrowed chords, and modal interchange. If you don't I suggest checking out musictheory.net first its free lessons and practice.
try using the big three I, IV, V, or i, iv, v if you're in minor, and then pick something else from the other scales. for example: C (I) Eb (bIII) F (IV) G (V) (Eb is from C minor)
Another example in C minor: Fm (iv) C (I) Gm (v) Cm (i) (C is from C major)
1:21 look it's the christmas chord
The most important video I have ever watched. Thanks so much
Fantastic! Thank you for posting this!
This video is the only non-scientific method of curing cancer that actually works.
Your graphic at 0:13 confused me since the ones shown as "D-7, E-7, A-7" are actually minor 7th chords. I have never seen the hyphen used to replace the "m" designation for minor. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems confusing to us newbies.
The Naturally occurring 4 note chords in key of Cmaj are:
Cmaj7, Dm7, Em7, Fmaj, G7, Am7, Bdim7
@@abox4415Yeah it's from jazz which they use a triangle for major and a minus sign for minor
Great explanation ! Clear simple and very useful ! Thanks ! I can't wait to try it !!!!
Big ups for explainging one of the more advanced harmonic concepts in about 4 minutes. The links to different modes, and overview of the vastness of possibilities is concise.
How have I never seen this channel before? 🤡
q u a l i t y
Concept of this video and teaching style plus video length. One of the best i ever saw on youtube.
Peak editing and design fr. Actually learned so much thank you
Well, good produced video. But all of this comes from German functional harmonic theory. Without understanding this, you won't really understand this above. It is not enough to say: "Oh that is 'aelonian'!" (btw. these names come from middle European church music from the middle ages, Renaissance and Barock and ment much more than just scales). Every chord progression in Western music that is diatonic can be explained by these three functions: Tonica, Subdominant and Dominant. These are really important! So a "modal interchange" (how Ammies call it) is really a chord which has the same _function_ as the original chord at this spot. This makes them "work" so it doesn't sound awkward to our diatonically trained ears. Google it, Baby!
Exactly. The video could have demonstrated this, for example by starting with a simple I-vi-ii-V-I progression, and then substituting the vi chord with a borrowed bVI and the minor ii chord with the half-diminished one. This would also have made how to use these chords more clear. Now the viewer understands that these chords exist, but I don't think the video really makes it clear how to apply these chords to chord progressions.
The production quality of the video is really good, though. Just wish it would go one step deeper into the explanation, so that the use of this concept wouldn't be so random. Now it's more like "let's try a random chord borrowed from a random mode here". Sure, trial and error is cool, but a theory video IMO should be about more than just trial and error. Everyone can try random chords and find cool sounds. IMO the point of a theory video is not to just say that a certain concept exists - it is to also explain why the chords work.
I know I sound over critical. But I'm just enthusiastic about this stuff. This is just constructive criticism. I actually really liked the video.
I really appreciate your work, thanks mate.
Brilliant, just brilliant!
I have been frustrated with my very generic and boring chord progressions lately. This video is probably the best explanation to borrowed chords. Dynamic, to the point, technical yet digestible. This channel is a gold mine I've been missing out on. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
