Triumph 12 Minute Tune - RTFM #3

  • Many modern Triumphs self-tune over a period to adapt to different environments or changes in equipment, e.g. exhaust change. The Tiger 1200 has this self-tuning, but you can "force it" and do it yourself. If you find your bike running a little rough or have changed the exhaust do the 12-minute tune before looking for other problems, it might just save you a lot of time. It's not a magic cure for all ills just a good baseline of your bikes state of tune.

    Thanks, Terry. Here in India, we weren't told that one has to wait for the fan to kick in to start the 12-minute adaptation process. I just count 12 minutes from when I start them up. Will try this now.

      Exactly. That's what I did yesterday and there was no change. Now it feels like I just wasted some fuel and time lol. I'm gonna try the proper steps today.

    Cheers for confirming this Terry, I had heard of a reference to it but not what was actually involved. Pull the clutch in ☺️👍

      Glad it was useful. They really should call it the 20 minute tune though, it’s like watching paint dry 😀.

    Very interesting, just what i need to know as it only will see a dealer with major problems. 1000km to triumph dealership. I give a service every 6 months filters and oil.

      @@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff CHEERS. Love my tiger. It tours , roundup my mate on HD and i can take it down gravel to beach for a can or two and watch the sunset. Do you know of any upgrades on headlights or riding lights.

      Keith Andrews - not sure you can do much with the stock headlights being LED but there is a wide selection of aftermarket LED auxiliary lights out there. Depends what you are after. Go for a 10 Degree spread for a penetrating light or 30 Deg for a more general wider illumination.

    Just got a '23 900 Rally pro.
    Loved the "FAIL" vid you did on that btw. Does the tune work for these models?
    Saw Someone say it also tuned and/or smoothed out the quick shifter as well. Any truth to that?
    Cheers

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  Рік тому

      It does work for the 900 but there is no reason why it would have a direct effect on the quick-shifter. Having said that a smoother running engine after a tune could make the QS feel more slick than before.

    Put back on the stick exhaust and sometimes on the low gears has a bit of a sudden burble. This was in the morning from cold and been riding it for 20 min. Is it bad fuelling? Should I do this and see?

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  3 роки тому

      The bike should automatically tune over time but it is always worth doing the 12 minute tune if you make changes to the exhaust. My bike is stock and it has always burbled a bit on deceleration.

      I'm not sure as its own capability of making adjustments might be out of the range that is required for the full system. It won't take you long to find out though!

      This is definitely the procedure from a printed Triumph service document which takes a good bit longer than 15 minutes. It is possible Triumph have since changed the procedure on newer bikes.

      BigBear Boyes - I’m not sure how far back this goes. It’s been around for a while. I’m guessing, and it is a guess from around 2015 (2nd model Tiger 1200). It is used on more than just the Tiger though. If unsure I would just ask your nearest dealer.
