English is my second language, but I understood at least the title of the song way back when i was dating my now wife, I was a very shy guy and could not express in words what I wanted to say..so I used this song ..even after his passing this great man helped me out..I think that many more can relate to it..

You guys really rock! You nail this Jim Croce song so gooooood. I love to watch your wonderful and perfectly blended, intricate and technically challenging, acoustic guitar, finger-picking licks, especially the ones on your awesome vintage Martin D-35 guitar. You kinda blow me away with your excellent performance of this tune. I own and play a Brazilian rosewood D-35 myself that I bought new in 1968. It’s nice to see your beautiful Martin guitar so prominently displayed. I noticed on several other videos that Croce himself seemed to like Martin acoustic guitars, too. Bravo, amigos!
Beautiful rendition guys! Ing, you're a wonderful inspiration to listen to. My family just bought a baby Airedale Terrier boy.... we named him Croce. I sing this song to him every night. Love you guys!

Jim is on record in several interviews stating this was written for his infant son AJ Croce, not Ingrid his wife.
If you try to analyze this line , "Every time I'll try to tell you all the words just came out wrong", it's obvious that this lyrics is not intended for an infant but for the woman he's wooing.
