The cool thing about all the live videos of his is he sounds like the record. Not just the production, but even his phrasing. If you didn't know better, you'd think,"this dude is lipsynching". But he wasn't. Very few artists sound as much like their recordings. It's a true talent. Thanks for posting. Hadn't seen this one, before. Kinda like a lost treasure, for me.
I agree and although this live version lacks the gentle drums/ percussion, it's stripped down approach somehow makes the song even more intimate and personal.
It is kind of unfortunate that Maury didn't get more "fame" for his part of the duo. Feels like his death in the same plane crash was kind of brushed over. Such talent though.
The sound of this song, the guitars, the vocals and lyrics came from such a deep emotional place, I became a huge fan of Croce and his Maury. The talent is still mind blowing.
This take sounds as good as the studio one.The second guitarist and second voice was also an excellent musician, l understand he also died in that tragic plane crash. RIP both of you and thanks for the legacy.
Thank you Dick Cavett, I have viewed your Show so many times, during the span of your Career . Jim Croce and his BEST Friend Maury, were ever so Beautiful, when they sang together ; as Jim toured, on the Road. He wrote this song at Ft Dix ( one pay phone to call your girlfriend, sweetheart, or fiance ' at Ft. Dix) ....only to have your heat broken over a telephone number..... True Story. The guy's would stand in line for hours, awaiting their chance to call upon the " love that they hoped would" be waiting ... Thank you to Jim and Maury , you are our Band in the Heaven's ....as we remember YOU BOTH SO WELL.; You usic, lives on ...💔💔♥️♥️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟☄☄☄☄☄☄☄☄☄☄🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🕯🕯☎️🎵📰🇺🇸🇬🇧 You Both are absolutely Brilliant Songwriters ... Rest in Peace 🎼🎵🎶✨
This song always takes me back to being 12 years old. In my room with the radio tuned to CFBC Saint John, reading a Brains Benton mystery. "Operator" would come on and l would have to stop reading and just listen. The lyrics, the melody, the unique sound of the lead guitar...beautiful. Coming up on 50 years later and still gives me goosebumps. RIP Jim and Maury.
Singing - A+. Playing A+. Songwriting - A+. I was 7 when these two died. I have been trying almost my whole life to play this song in one take - it's really, really hard and they make it look effortless.
I just love the lyrics. I can imagine a broken hearted man, at a payphone trying to muster to the courage to call the 2 that broke his heart, while at the end realizing that he's better off letting them go. Amazing musician.
Jim was amazing. He didn't need a band to back him up, but just his guitar and Maury's. This hit the top 40 in Nov, 1972 and like many others I remember it on Casey Kasem's countdowns.
Cry at this song and Time in a Bottle Cuts my heart like a knife ! Wow ! Jim and my neighbor from Trenton Maury ! Sending Love to you -see yuz on the other side
Unvergesslich
"you can keep the dime" wow, he packs so much into each line. Obviously, the operator won't ever receive the dime personally. He's saying thank you for listening, and he has no one else to call.
Never fly in a private plane! Look at all the singers who died. Croce, Patsy Cline, John Denver, Buddy Holly, Richey Valens. It never ends. RIP to all that perished!
All private air transportation helicopter. Remembering the Legend Kobe Bryant and his beautiful young daughter Gigi. May they all Rest in Paradise 🕊️ 🕊️ 🕊️
He was an amazing songwriter/performer! One can only imagine what else he would have done, mind blowing and a huge loss to the world of music and the fans!
"For teaching, scholarship, education and research." Wow, wish there would be some fine musicians out there who could "build" on these ideas and musical style. The world would be a better place if there was more of this and less "useless" music. This music crosses all genres and moves the listener in a way that is rare in today's world. 10/27/2016
If I had to pick a favorite song of Jim's it would be impossible....they are all fantastic, his career was just starting and ended so suddenly....in 2021 I still wonder how much more great music he could've written... 🌹 😞
I'm not sure he'd have continued forward, he was a beast in the short time he was here.. he reminds me of my dad and I riding to country roads after hauling hay.. we played two Croce songs at dad's funeral...
I think the closest thing I've come to experiencing anything like Jim Croce live was seeing Aamos Lee. Yes different, but there was such a wonderful sing/songwriter feel to him and I barely knew who he was since the concert was a gift for my daughter who was a fan. I know Lee hasn't risen to the fame that Croce had but listening to Lee still brings back Croce vibes.
I won tickets to see him. I gave the tickets to my brother because he could drive and had a date. Croce died in a plane crash before my brother got to see him in concert.
Memories of my dad, kneeling down on the porch, smoking a cig just thinking to himself bout god knows what. He loved Jim Croce and had it playing on his radio all the time, also Blood, Sweat, and Tears. He used to sing this song but would say "A burrito". and make me laugh. I miss my old man. He wasn't the greatest dad but damn do I miss him. I had some pretty good memories with him.
Been listening to Jim for years but had no idea how to pronounce his name, tried to find a late night appearance so I could hear his name announced, glad Dick could so explicitly clarify.
I was in school at Fort Rucker Alabama when news hit that he was killed. I was in shock. When my car radio broke the news back in September 1973, I was stunned. I hope i will meet him one day and ell him how much I liked his music.
I never understood why, when Maury did the harmonies and most of the guitar work that made the song what it is, he did not get credit for it. It should have been Jim and Maury just like Simon and Garfunkel. Don't get me wrong, I loved Jim and his songs that he wrote and performed but, they would not have been the same without Maury. I grew up with these songs and only later found out that Jim played with another guitar player/singer.
Maury was Jim's "band". Excellent musician in his own right. Jim sang backup for Maury on his only studio album Gingerbread around 1970. Then fate intervened.
Pirate Labs, Yes, I've been curious about this too - and a little sad, given Maury's exceptional musicianship. Mostly Maury is one step behind Jim on stage, whether sitting or standing. Jim gets the billing. Was this Jim's wish or Maury's - or both? Maury was a self-effacing guy. Presumably Jim had financial control, receiving the fee from the promoter and paying Maury out of it . . .
It was Jim’s show and that’s why it worked so well. Maury was supporting him 100%. I get the feeling that if Maury’s had had his own gig that Jim would have been happy to just support him. You get a real brothers’ vibe from them.

Good point. They're playing their instruments, too. Maury isnt playing to a backing track
I agree 💯
I agree and although this live version lacks the gentle drums/ percussion, it's stripped down approach somehow makes the song even more intimate and personal.
I totally agree.
The guitar arrangement too is note perfect on every recording I’ve seen.
Sheer brilliance.
Timeless Jim Croce
Maury Muehleisen brought me here. He and Jim were geniuses and played/sang so well together.
It is kind of unfortunate that Maury didn't get more "fame" for his part of the duo. Feels like his death in the same plane crash was kind of brushed over. Such talent though.
@@scottanthony3426 I agree. It's not to take anything away from Jim but a shoutout and a little more love for Maury would be nice.
Maury made these great songs so much greater with his brilliant accompaniment and perfect harmonies.
It still makes me sad knowing the talent and love this incomparable man had, and the music the world missed out on.
This is the kind of music we need today. Just so pleasant to ears.
Yes, and so soothing to the soul! We need this at this time...
Maury is the most underrated guitarst
overrated
Brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear his love songs...
The sound of this song, the guitars, the vocals and lyrics came from such a deep emotional place, I became a huge fan of Croce and his Maury. The talent is still mind blowing.
I was too a big fan ...in college i use to sing his songs in gatherings..
Still mind blowing in June 2023
If this song doesn't bring a tear to your eye, bless you. You've never found real love, lost it and then been left nowhere, by yourself, alone.
Yes I feel like it now 2023 it really does hurt 😞

Same here! This melody got my teen heart, and I didn't even really know what the lyrics meant.
Love Jim Croce and Brains Benton!😊
Jim Croce wrote the best songs at the time and if he was still alive now he would just be awesome God bless him
Singing - A+. Playing A+. Songwriting - A+. I was 7 when these two died. I have been trying almost my whole life to play this song in one take - it's really, really hard and they make it look effortless.
yes! I thought I was just inept---could not play it right!!!!!!
Some music and singers never go out of style. This singer and his music are one of them.
My favorite singer while I was in high school--he died when I was in the 11th grade. So long ago...A great loss.
I just love the lyrics. I can imagine a broken hearted man, at a payphone trying to muster to the courage to call the 2 that broke his heart, while at the end realizing that he's better off letting them go. Amazing musician.
I absolutely agree with you....so sad for the boys boi g ofc to Vietnam...Basic Training at Vt. Dix....🌟🌟☄☄♥️♥️🕯🕯📰💔💔🇺🇸🇬🇧
Jim was amazing. He didn't need a band to back him up, but just his guitar and Maury's.

The man was simply "Brilliant"...His songs touch you in the most intimate ways...Jim's gone but never forgotten, long live his magic...
Man this guy.. & his buddy played it so well....
Timeless, timeless, timeless.
One of the few performers who were as good in concert as in studio.
Cry at this song and Time in a Bottle
Cuts my heart like a knife ! Wow ! Jim and my neighbor from Trenton Maury ! Sending Love to you -see yuz on the other side
Happy Birthday Jim.Ill never forget you. You remind me of when I was young and life didnt suck lol.
A man of true talent. Love him
Love alway💔
He sings with all his heart and feelings
A beautiful guy that we lost too soon. He left us with great memories.
" Memories and Photographs " .....🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟☄☄☄☄☄🎖🎖🏆🏆🕯🕯🎼🎼🎵🎵🎶🎶💔💔🇺🇸🇬🇧
One of the best songs ever put together 😎 absolutely amazing 👍
One of the four songs from Jim and Maury that I really love
One of only four? So you have heard only four of their songs?
Just raw pure talent

One of a kind..The most Evergreen and loved songwriter in the world..
Best song ever written by the best that ever was.
Great story teller combined with an excellent melodic guitar player. What a team!
His music n talent brings a tear 😢 knowing how good he was sad he's gone, gone way to soon RIP Mr Croce .. ❤
We are missing them both..r.i.p.
Jim was so brilliant. I'm so sorry he died so young. And Maury.
"you can keep the dime" wow, he packs so much into each line. Obviously, the operator won't ever receive the dime personally. He's saying thank you for listening, and he has no one else to call.
One of the greatest talents of all time.
Never fly in a private plane! Look at all the singers who died. Croce, Patsy Cline, John Denver, Buddy Holly, Richey Valens. It never ends. RIP to all that perished!
And Rickey Nelso
Helicopters are probably even worse.

Not a singer, but one of the most decorated soldiers' in US history and war hero/actor, Audie Murphy.
Incomparable.
Perfect word
Loved him since I was a little kid hearing him for the first time back in the 70's. There was nobody like Jim Croce!
Maury Muehleisen - best sideman EVER! RIP
These Croce vids are a great treat, ty for these.
Jim Croce y Maury excelente sincronización, temas y voz.
Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Ricky Nelson, John Denver. Such great musicians. SO DEVASTATING.
IN HEAVEN'S BAND
You forgot Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, after all, that was the day the music died.
I got His great hits. He was a genious
Beautiful! Still miss him!
One of the greatest songs of the 70s. It broke my heart when these two died.
He was an amazing songwriter/performer! One can only imagine what else he would have done, mind blowing and a huge loss to the world of music and the fans!
At only 30 years old........
That’s might be one of the best songs ever written it’s all time in my opinion does anyone remember when you could make a phone call for a 10 cents
Ah yes.....Mum always gave us a dime, just in case ; when we went out in the evening... 🕯🕯🌟🌟☄☄🎼🌠🌠
I remember!
I didn't know the second guitarist, Maury Muehleisen, was also killed in the plane crash that killed Croce. Unbelievable.
Singer songwriting personified!!! A story told .. perfectly, beautifully
wow.. this song.. cuts me straight through.
Prolly one of the saddest deaths. He had so much more to give us
Best song written explaining the “Dear John” letters our servicemen received during the Vietnam War
omg ..i love him for his great talent
Jim Croce, Harry Chaplin, and John Denver, 3 of my favorite singer songwriters from the 70s, taken waaat too soon.
Dick Cavett meets a legend.
back when music made you feel
In the early 70s while in the Marines ,I played his songs on my guitar and till this day ,they still please an audience. His songs are timeless.
What a talent
Always loved Jim Croce!
so great and wonderful!
great song, reminds me of dad going to Pa. back in Nov. '72
Jim Croce is my long time favorite. I love his songs and his guitar fingering style is incredible. New friend join you.
oldie but goodie
Sandra Osburn 'oldie but Goldie'...regards to you Sandra from Australia !!
We miss you guys!, i love them!, saludos desde Chile!
I just love that song

Dick Cavett had the best guests

2021 still listening… Resting in God’s loving arms eternally….
50 years ago this year....2023
They should really make a movie about him
I won tickets to see him. I gave the tickets to my brother because he could drive and had a date. Croce died in a plane crash before my brother got to see him in concert.

if this doesn't bring a tear to your eyes, you have no heart.
" You can keep the dime "
At the Martin Guitar Factory, there is a Jim Croce signature guitar on display with the dime on the 3rd fret.
They don't make music like this anymore! God, I miss them so much!
Perfection.

Siempre me había preguntado cómo se pronuncia su apellido. Y en este video lo escucho de su propia voz!
Maury was also a great songwriter.
