It must have been a wild time at NBC Burbank in the 60's and 70's. You had The Andy Williams Show, The Dean Martin Show, Laugh-in, and The Hollywood Squares all competing for studio space. Plus, "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" starting in 1972.
O yes I am commenting again now....The opening theme got me so worked up too, when Kenny Williams would open by saying "One of these stars is sitting in the Secret Square, and the contestant who picks it first could win a prize package totaling over TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!" (canned audience OOOHS) Which... star... is it? Wally Cox, Rose Marie, Jan Murray, Kent McCord, Jonathan Winters, CCCHHHHAAARRROOO, Charley Weaver, Joan Rivers...or Paul Lynde....all in the Hollywood Squares! And here is the master of the Hollywood Squares, Peter Marshall!
That's a great picture of the HS set! I wonder what became of it? It should be in some television hall of fame. It was a TV icon. The show lasted for a couple of decades. That's a monumental achievement for ANY TV show and it deserves its due recognition.
It ran on NBC daytime from the Fall of 1966 until June 20, 1980, when Fred Silverman put The David Letterman Show on in its place for an ill-fated, 4-month run. Hollywood Squares would be resurrected in later years and be hosted by such names as John Davidson, Tom Bergeron, etc. I think Shadoe Stevens of Federated Group fame was the announcer at some point. The show, in my opinion, really wasn't worth watching after Marshall's stint ended in June 1980.
More than likely it was dismantled after the final year in Las Vegas. I once read it was just under 17 feet tall, in order to fit through the scenery doors at NBC Burbank.
@@ApartmentKing66 Merill Heatter felt the same way; he called the John Davidson version "a circus," according to a book I have on my kindle. It also says that the producer for the original, Art Alisi, got a call from a confused elderly relative of his who called to complain about John Davidson, asking, "Why is the dummy asking the questions now?" However, Shadoe Stevens was the announcer for that era, and for the first part of the 1998-2004 run with Tom Bergeron. Jeffery Tambor announced the last two seasons after Whoopi Goldberg quit, and Henry Winkler (the Fonz) took over.

i searched this because i was watching an episode of in living color the other day. they did a skit called the east hollywood squares. of course they had peter marshall as the master of the squares. the next thing i knew i came here to search the hollywood square i came across this. i remember hearing the theme music when they would go through what the prizes were and at the end of the show. i never realized this complete theme ever existed. it brought back memories of watching the show as a kid in the 70's during the summer months. george gobel was always the bottom left square and paul lynne was forever center square. now i know george replaced charley weaver at bottom left when he died. this theme music brings back memories especially of game shows that used celebrities to assist the contestants like the match game. kudos for adding this!
I was always hoping when they were running the credits of the show that they would play the entire music all the way thru!!! They never did. But thanks to UA-cam. I finally herd the entire theme! I love this show. Big part of the 1970s!
They played the entire theme song through during the 1976 Storybook Squares special episodes. But it was missing the piccolo solo heard in this version here.
I have a CD with TV game show themes on it, and it plays this one all the way through. I'd never heard the ending either. And the marching band at my high school used to play this as a practice piece, and we even played it on the field once before a game. I was 1st trombone, and still play to this day. (Jan Griffiths).
@@valerieteti1755 They played the entire theme on the daytime show in 1976. On one of the party shows with Paul Lynde (as son of Muskeeter) you can hear through the applause the end of the theme. They then started over.
Jeff Missinne The version found on the CD you mentioned is an edited version of the music that started being used on the show around 1977 or 1978. That version repeated the first verse and eliminated the piccolo part as well as the second organ solo. The version on this video is the unedited original version of the music.
I can never get enough of this theme music!!!...first one I didn't care for, and the last one (disco music), just went with the times. I don't know if you could of ever find an excellent M.C. to replace Peter Marshall!!!
With all due respect; Barker, Narz (or his brother, Kennedy), Cullen, Trebek, Dawson and even Monty Hall could never be Mr. Hollywood Squares the way Marshall was.
Brent O'Brien Peter Marshall will ALWAYS be the master of the squares John Davidson nor Tom Bergeron can replace him However, Peter and Tom both won Daytime Emmy Awards, something that Johnny D has never done
Brent O'Brien Were you surprised that Peter and Tom won Emmys? and I guess you're not surprised that John Davidson never won an Emmy for The NEW Hollywood Squares also, what did you make of Peter Marshall not being a fan of Whoopi Goldberg and what's your take on Merrill Heatter calling John Davidson's NEW Hollywood Squares a Circus? and what does he mean by that?
TehJew22 Peter Marshall was also the master of the Blitz Board on the spin-off All-Star Blitz and Trebek hosted the spin-off Battlestars, but yes, Marshall is the master, Tom did a good job, but it got better once Whoopi left (although I liked the 1st Season better) and John Davidson, I have mixed reactions about him and his version, Shadoe Stevens did a great job as announcer
Peter Marshall made this classic game show an all time great. Kenny Williams was a great announcer!! William Loose did a great number on this game show theme. Most of today's game shows and themes rot to the core.
Edward Nygma You got that right and also, Series Co-Creator Merrill Heatter called The NEW Hollywood Squares with John Davidson a circus I wonder what did he mean by that? Too much comedy? Too many jokes or John Davidson didn't keep the stars in line like Peter and Tom Bergeron did?
T-Bone Hubbard Listen to Rose Marie!! Peter knew how to take a line, and give a line, and when to say lets keep the game going!! Whoopi can't match up to Paul Lynde, or should be in the same class as Paul Lynde.
Brent O'Brien I heard THAT, I also agree with Whoopi, as much as I love her acting ability on TV and Films, she wasn't fit to be a Hollywood Square and King World letting her be the Executive Producer didn't do wonders either, but when The Fonz took over as Producer, it got better and Martin Mull becoming the Center Square for the Final Year was a good idea and it felt Old School with him, but yes, Peter knew how to keep the Squares in check and Tom did that, too, but as for Johnny D., he let them go on and on and on and let them get out of control like JM J. Bullock and that's probably one of the reasons why Merrill Heatter called The NEW Hollywood Squares w/John Davidson a circus
T-Bone Hubbard I wasn't a Tom B. fan., but he knew how to keep control. Also, I get tired of these entertainers telling us how to live and how to think when they don't do certain things themselves. For ex., drive a economical car. I'd see facts in that point, but where I live, Spokane, WA., you need something for year around, 4WD that can be put back into 2WD. Thankfully, I have an F-150. Not great gas milege, but when winter times comes, its a great tool to have, when used properly. I call it my space ship.
Dont forget Kenny's intro: "One of these stars is sitting in the Secret Square, and the contestant who picks it first could win a prize package worth $_____. Which star is it? (reads the stars' names) All in the Hollywood Squares! And here's the master of the Hollywood Squares, Peter Marshall!"
I got this one: One of these stars is sitting in the secret square and the contestant who picks it first could win a prize package worth over $6,000! Which star is it? Bayley and Carmella? Neil Patrick Harris? Tim Barr? Earl Hebner? Judge Lauren Lake? George Gobel? Gilbert Gottfried? Catt Sadler? Or Paul Lynde? ALL in The Hollywood Squares! And here’s The Master Of The Hollywood Squares, Peter Marshall!
The original Pyramid with Dick Clark had a good one-so did Match Game --whatever year; the late 70's Cross wits; Jackpot! with Geoff Edwards and yes, even the Big Showdown all had very good these-and so did the original Wheel of Fortune with Chuck Woolery. Such a lost art form...
This is one of my favorites along with the theme to the original High Rollers with Alex Trebek, Tic Tac Dough with Wink Martindale, Password Plus, Body Language, Bullseye with Jim Lange and Split Second with Tom Kennedy among others.
The original Pyramid theme is called "Tuning Up". The newer one sounds similar---like the original backward. Match Game in the 60s had "A Swigning Safari" (Bert Kaempfert) and the 70s one had the best (don't know the name of the tune). Jackpot's was good too---the original one, and so did Press Your Luck. Most game shows had great themes, and some can be found on CDs. I have 3 of them. (Jan Griffiths). @@steveblaugh2180

Paul Lynde was my favorite. How appropriate that he was always The Center Square. The one I missed most from that game was Wally Cox, loved his voice especially when he did Underdog.
Actually, he was not always the center square in the early years. In fact, while he was a regular on the daytime version for most of its run, he only made a couple of appearances on the 1968 NBC Primetime version and was NOT the center square on any of those (Buddy Hackett on almost all of those was the center square).
@@WaltGekkoYes. In fact, when Buddy was center square, Paul sat to his left. Paul was the center right square at that time before becoming the permanent center center square.

I'm 5 years old again, circa 1977! I loved it when the show was going off and hearing this tune, especially that piccolo solo. Plus the board flashing with the stars all shown and waving during the credits. Better times!😊
To TehJew22, my brother with special needs, who just passed away, always enjoyed this music and show with me!!!...he liked the illumination of the squares!
Charley Weaver, shown at 1:31, is the grandfather of the Arquettes: Roseanne, Patricia and David. His real name was Cliff Arquette. Also, what would've been cool would've been to have the "Brady Bunch" cast occupying the squares corresponding to their grid positions on their show.
I used to get a kick out of hearing this theme song and seeing the closing credits and see the stars waving to the camera or grooving to this theme. It’s real Hollywood swinging style!
The middle parts where they hit the high notes on the horn and keyboard solos remind me of the "Soul Bossa Nova" by Sam cook. The one you hear in the "Austin Powers" movies. It's such a lively tune! It seems like it would be a hit song back in the day but now it would be too good to fit in anywhere, except a "Hip Hop" playlist. It's a real toe-tapping tune. Great post, OP!
The game show world lost another legend today when Peter Marshall, "The Master of The Hollywood Squares' Passed away at the age of 98. RIP PETER... If there is a Hollywood Squares in heaven, We know who the \Master" is!~ RIP PETER MARSHALL 1926-2024!!
Love this theme with the trumpets, organ, and flute. Peter Marshall was a great host. It's too bad they didn't use him as host of the other Hollywood Squares version's!
As great a producer as Mark Goodson was, I will be irritated with him FOREVER for not putting Gene Rayburn and Peter Marshall together for Match Game/Hollywood Squares in 1983. The format sucked anyhow, but it would have sucked a lot less if Jon Bauman hadn't hosted. Bowzer is a fantastic singer, but he's not a good game show host.
@@steve760 It was NBC's call. Marshall wanted to do a revival and had a stake in Hollywood Squares but made some bad business decisions that caused him to lose that stake, as well as doing something to make the NBC execs not consider him as host.
@@trevortuominen8233 NBC has a say, of course, but if one of television’s most influential producers doesn’t want you hosting, you’re probably not going to get the gig, and I understand Goodson just simply did not like Marshall.
This theme song reminds me of my days as a kid in Toronto in the early 70s. That was on in the morning. And Peter Marshall was the host. Many reboots were tried but didn't last long. I would like to see a reboot ONLY WITH THE ORIGINAL 60s THEME SONG
In my lifetime, the first time I heard of the game was the Tom Bergeron era. I didn't discover John Davidson's era until later on in life; however, while they each have good things about them, they don't top the original version with Peter Marshall, and Paul Lynde in the center square, making everybody laugh so hard. (The Davidson era had a killer theme tune, though; kudos to Stormy Sachs for writing it; he also wrote the music to "Caesars Challenge" if I am not mistaken, also using a saxophone lead for that one.) Peter once said he refused to appear on any of the shows with Whoopi Goldberg because he thought they were way too crude in tone. However, she was a vital part of the popularity, and so when she left, the ratings dropped with it.
If anything I would love to have Peter Marshall's old desk & where the 2 contestants sat beside him Mr.X and Ms.Circle.I would also love to have one of those old Hollywood Squares microphones.
According to William Loose's sheet music to this song, there is a section of the music that says " voices". However it is unknown whose voices they actually are. I seem to hear one male and one female voice in certain parts of the song. I would assume they were members of William Loose's orchestra.

i searched this because i was watching an episode of in living color the other day. they did a skit called the east hollywood squares. of course they had peter marshall as the master of the squares. the next thing i knew i came here to search the hollywood square i came across this. i remember hearing the theme music when they would go through what the prizes were and at the end of the show. i never realized this complete theme ever existed. it brought back memories of watching the show as a kid in the 70's during the summer months. george gobel was always the bottom left square and paul lynne was forever center square. now i know george replaced charley weaver at bottom left when he died. this theme music brings back memories especially of game shows that used celebrities to assist the contestants like the match game. kudos for adding this!
I was always hoping when they were running the credits of the show that they would play the entire music all the way thru!!! They never did. But thanks to UA-cam. I finally herd the entire theme! I love this show. Big part of the 1970s!
Luther Jennings I do remember they did once maybe during the night time version but they never did it again ☹️
I thought it was so cool!
@@megamanj2004X Saw that on GSN in 2002! Recorded it! But CD of Game show themes in 2003! But thank you thou!
@@valerieteti1755 They played the entire theme on the daytime show in 1976. On one of the party shows with Paul Lynde (as son of Muskeeter) you can hear through the applause the end of the theme. They then started over.
William Loose and his orchestra, and no, this unedited version has not been released commercially as of today.
Jeff Missinne The version found on the CD you mentioned is an edited version of the music that started being used on the show around 1977 or 1978. That version repeated the first verse and eliminated the piccolo part as well as the second organ solo. The version on this video is the unedited original version of the music.
Oh, this sounds FANTASTIC!
Haven't heard this in ages, and first time I heard the full version.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Sure did.
Another celebrity I thought would hit their 100th birthday but came so close.
We will miss you Peter
I can never get enough of this theme music!!!...first one I didn't care for, and the last one (disco music), just went with the times. I don't know if you could of ever find an excellent M.C. to replace Peter Marshall!!!
With all due respect; Barker, Narz (or his brother, Kennedy), Cullen, Trebek, Dawson and even Monty Hall could never be Mr. Hollywood Squares the way Marshall was.
Brent O'Brien Peter Marshall will ALWAYS be the master of the squares
John Davidson nor Tom Bergeron can replace him
However, Peter and Tom both won Daytime Emmy Awards, something that Johnny D has never done
T-Bone Hubbard You are right!!! Peter had it!! The two others, in black and white couldn't match up to him!!! Burt Parks one of the hosts!!
Brent O'Brien Were you surprised that Peter and Tom won Emmys? and I guess you're not surprised that John Davidson never won an Emmy for The NEW Hollywood Squares
also, what did you make of Peter Marshall not being a fan of Whoopi Goldberg and what's your take on Merrill Heatter calling John Davidson's NEW Hollywood Squares a Circus? and what does he mean by that?
Edward Nygma You got that right and also, Series Co-Creator Merrill Heatter called The NEW Hollywood Squares with John Davidson a circus
I wonder what did he mean by that?
+FreewayFan ForLife Maybe they could do this at a school dance, it's a weird enough song to do, LOL!!
Every morning before school, I watched Hollywood Squares. I was a huge fan of the original show.
This is one reason why I love UA-cam!
I got this one:
One of these stars is sitting in the secret square and the contestant who picks it first could win a prize package worth over $6,000! Which star is it?
Bayley and Carmella? Neil Patrick Harris? Tim Barr? Earl Hebner? Judge Lauren Lake? George Gobel? Gilbert Gottfried? Catt Sadler? Or Paul Lynde?
ALL in The Hollywood Squares! And here’s The Master Of The Hollywood Squares, Peter Marshall!
hey that;s my line
This syndicated weekly / twice weekly opening was from 1971 to 1978.
@@danalong1237 well thank you Kenny Williams
Good evening and welcome to The Hollywood Squares! Hello Stars! (Celebrities: Hi Peter!)
I learned a lot from this show. I was a year old when it first aired.
this is by far the best game show theme ever
The original Pyramid with Dick Clark had a good one-so did Match Game --whatever year; the late 70's Cross wits; Jackpot! with Geoff Edwards and yes, even the Big Showdown all had very good these-and so did the original Wheel of Fortune with Chuck Woolery. Such a lost art form...
Top 5
@@tubelover10 IT STILL WOULD BE NICE IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT COULD PLAY THE OLD SQUARES THEME FOR WHEN THEY SHOW A DREAM CAR EITHER IN THE GOLDEN ROAD GAME OR 3 STRIKES OR EVEN DURING THE SHOWCASES!!

Classic theme of "The Hollywood Squares" with original host THE MASTER OF THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES PETER MARSHALL!!!!
I remember this theme song as a child in the 1970s. I haven't forgotten it!!! Great song. Those were great times ❤
Paul Lynde was my favorite. How appropriate that he was always The Center Square. The one I missed most from that game was Wally Cox, loved his voice especially when he did Underdog.
Same. (Jan Griffiths).
I always loved the occasional shot of the set from behind the squares or off-center front shots.
This takes me back to my childhood, in my living room in Ewing NJ. I'm 7 years old again hearing this. This program, this theme and especially the Secret Square sound effect all got me more hyper than if I had eaten 2349723492374927349732 Hershey bars in 3 minutes. Even when Pete would ramble off the rules, even THAT got me hyper as Hades........(jumping up and down hysterically now listening to this theme)
Youust have watched HS on KYW TV 3 now CBS,4 me it was WNBC TV 4 since my family lived close 2 NYC
Yes we got both Channel 3 KYW and Channel 4 out of New York. Similarly CBS Channel 2 WCBS out of New York and WCAU Channel 10 out of Philly, and ABC was channels 6 and 7 for us.
I CAN DEFINITELY RELATE!! THIS CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD SQUARES THEME TAKES ME BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD IN THE TWIN CITIES MPLS.ST.PAUL MN FROM 7-1-1974-5-15-1981 FROM AGES 2 UNTIL 9 YEARS OLD.I REMEMBER BEFORE THE MARCH 5 1979 NETWORK SWITCH--Hollywood Squares would come on in the morning on KSTP TV CH.5 when it was originally NBC BUT the nighttime syndicated Squares would air on KMSP TV CH.9 when it was still ABC.However March 5 1979 THE GREAT TWIN CITIES NETWORK SWITCH!!--KSTP TV CH.5 WAS NOW ABC & WTCN TV CH.11 was now NBC!!--before it was independent Metromedia 11!!--& finally KMSP TV CH.9 BECAME INDEPENDENT. CBS stayed with WCCO TV CH.4 & PBS STAYED WITH KTCA TV CH.2 & KTCI TV CH.17.I didn,t start school until Sep.1980 until May 1981 before me & my parents moved to Baltimore Md.Hollywood Squares now aired on WTCN TV CH.11 (KARE TV) in the morning before the daytime show left in June 1980.Nigjtime Squares continued to air on KMSP TV CH.9 even when they filmed their final.year in Las Vegas.Myself and my mother Lois Ann Routhier 10-28-1934-5-6-1984 & father Phillip Anthony Routhier 9-17-1924-8-6-2001 lived at 1182 Selby Ave.St.Paul Mn.Dad was a roofer who worked for 2 roofing companies--JOHN A.DALSIN AND SONS(1975-78) & RAINVILLE CARLSON ROOFING CO.(1978-81) Mom was a stay at home mom(RIGHT!-OKAY!!) I went to J.J.HILL SCHOOL September 1980 -May 1981 & I.d remember watching Squares at 6pm 2 or 3 hours after coming home from school & doing my homework & afterwards drawing pictures of Squares.(aside from drawing our old house & the buses that I use to watch going back & forth passed our house & Dad,s car) I remember Dad driving 🚘 his 1968 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Station wagon which he had for 7 years until after we moved to Baltimore (1976-83) & put 180,000 miles on that car & not once did it burn a drop of oil
I can even remember my own mother Lois Ann Routhier 10-28-1934-5-6-1984 telling me that when she carried me on the day I was about to be born April 12th 1972 & when Dad had to take her to the 🏥 hospital--earlier that morning she was watching The Hollywood Squares.I was.born in Santa Rosa California at WARRICK HOSPITAL which of course now is SANTA ROSA GENERAL HOSPITAL at 4.20 pm.I have no memory of California or New Mexico-I have only memories of my 1st childhood home The Twin Cities Mpls.St.Paul Mn from 1974-81 from ages 2-9 years of age & My 2nd childhood home of almost 43 years in Baltimore Md.
I have one final sentimental note about The Hollywood Squares--I remember my late stepbrother MR.EUGENE B.MONTZ JR AKA GENE 4-25-1939-3-25-1997 who worked at the old Bethlehem Steel Plant Sparrows Point Md.Gene told me that when it would be lunchtime at the.plant the cafeteria would be so jam packed because most of all the guys would be watching The Hollywood Squares daytime show. That cafeteria would be so jam packed poor Gene couldn,t even get lunch to eat.Gene worked at Beth.Steel 26 years from 1969-1995 when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer until his death a month before his 58th birthday on March 25 1997!! I'm 5 years old again, circa 1977! I loved it when the show was going off and hearing this tune, especially that piccolo solo. Plus the board flashing with the stars all shown and waving during the credits. Better times!😊
Gawwwwwd, the memories this brings back. When I was a kid in the 70s, my mom watched this every morning.
To TehJew22, my brother with special needs, who just passed away, always enjoyed this music and show with me!!!...he liked the illumination of the squares!
Really? :O
I'm sorry for your loss. :(
TehJew22 like I said a few minutes ago from my last response, I always think of the good times I had with him. He was also the ladies man.
Brent O'Brien I hope I can be even 22% of the ladies man he was. :)
TehJew22 I keep playing it 3 to 4 times a day, and I know it makes me feel at ease that he had a big brother who looked out after his interests.
Happy 93rd birthday to the MASTER OF THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES! That of course would be Ralph Pierre LaCock Sr. aka (Peter Marshall)!
Man I loved this show when I was a kid. First time hearing the extended theme. Thanks for posting.
Quincy Jones did “Soul Bossa Nova.”
In the 1966-1981 version, the best “Hollywood Squares” theme is or was 1969-1979 Bob & Merrill’s theme.
That's for sure. I love listening to this version.
Absolutely!!! Luv this theme. I drive a old 1973 Cadillac Fleetwood... this is the tune I blast from it.
Thank you for posting this! I will get a smile on my face every time I listen to this. It is magical.

@@steve760 I agree, Jon Bauman was a terrible host.

I remember that. Dick Clark, center square. (Jan Griffiths).
This theme song reminds me of my days as a kid in Toronto in the early 70s. That was on in the morning. And Peter Marshall was the host. Many reboots were tried but didn't last long. I would like to see a reboot ONLY WITH THE ORIGINAL 60s THEME SONG
The original 60s theme was similar to this one, but not as jazzy. I do remember it. (Jan Griffiths).

Paying tribute to the Master of “The Hollywood Squares,” Peter Marshall.
The likes of Peter Marshall will not pass this way again, my friend.
Those voices can be heard toward the end of the theme.

I always watched this show during the summer months and snow days as a kid. Charley Weaver was my favorite.
Charley was hilarious. He and Paul Lynde were my faves. RIP to them both, and I hope to see them in Heaven one day. (Jan Griffiths).
He’s now hosting the “Heavenly Squares.” RIP, Peter.
In my lifetime, the first time I heard of the game was the Tom Bergeron era. I didn't discover John Davidson's era until later on in life; however, while they each have good things about them, they don't top the original version with Peter Marshall, and Paul Lynde in the center square, making everybody laugh so hard. (The Davidson era had a killer theme tune, though; kudos to Stormy Sachs for writing it; he also wrote the music to "Caesars Challenge" if I am not mistaken, also using a saxophone lead for that one.)
Peter once said he refused to appear on any of the shows with Whoopi Goldberg because he thought they were way too crude in tone. However, she was a vital part of the popularity, and so when she left, the ratings dropped with it.
The Hollywood Squares TO ME will always be Peter Marshall.s show.John Davidson & Tom Bergeron weren't too bad but not the same!!
Actually it's Peter Marshall himself.
Would union rules allow that?
