Through my husband’s passing and leaving me a widow at age 45 with 2 kids, I became closer and closer to God. I was so hurt, angry and sad; I wanted to leave His church but He pulled me closer and closer to Him. Today, 13 years after my husband’s passing, I have finally completed my BIY and now, almost graduating in the CIY. I thank God for not letting go of me, and my 2 kids. I love Him, with all my heart, mind and soul.
I am so grateful that God brought Fr. Mike (and all the folks at Ascension Press) to us so we can not only hear and read the Word of God, but can understand His Word more than we would if we just read the Bible ourselves. God bless you, Fr. Mike. I'm praying for you and for everyone at Ascension and everyone who is following both the CIY and BIY! Goodnight, everyone.
I just want to add to your commentary that we also need to ask for the intervention of the Holy Spirit to help us understand and see the Truth and avoid misunderstandings. Without the HS we'll remain at human capacity only
So our knowledge of God is limited; sin seems limitless; we are in trouble for our sins for eternity if we don’t get it right yet God loves us unconditionally. 🤯
How can we speak about God? CCC 39 In defending the ability of human reason to know God, the Church is expressing her confidence in the possibility of speaking about him to all men and with all men, and therefore of dialogue with other religions, with philosophy and science, as well as with unbelievers and atheists. THANK YOU FATHER MIKE!❤
I make notes on a pad when Fr Mike is discussing things. Following along with the reading is sometimes hard due to the pace (I know the speed can be adjusted but it makes things drag a bit too much). But writing down important notes helps me stay focused. Not that I often go back over them but maybe I will pull out last years notes to see how much I missed.
Went to RCIA last night and it is awesome how many there were going thru this series. Awesome. I was at place where I needed to exchange truth and lie. MY truth was "God don't love me" the lie was "God loves me". blessed to exchange these for the better... "God DOES love me"
Thank you Fr. Mike. Praying for you all. And I feel really united to you all as we accompany Rome today in Pope Benedict's final send off. Pope Benedict, pray for us 🙏
What I've learned: 1. The ability to reason reveals the truth that helps us perceive who is God, but reason is limited. Our language of expression of God's identity is limited. We know only as much as He has revealed Himself. 2. Pope Pius XII, Humani Generis: Truth and reasoning is the natural law written in our hearts by the Creator. Original sin causes man to have disordered appetite. Sin distorts us in a manner that when we find truth to be inconvenient, we doubt it or call it false. We need God to enlighten the truth through revelation. Revelation is possible only through self surrender and abnegation. Abnegation (noun): the action of renouncing or rejecting something. Similar: renunciation, abandonment, denial. 3. Reasoning helps us dialogue about God to people of other religion, atheists, philosophy and science. 4. All creations have some resemblance to God especially mankind. We are created in the image and likeness of God but God transcends all creation. Although created in His image, we have more different than we are the same to Him. 5. Wisdom 13:5 "For from the greatness and beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator." 6. Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom: "God is the inexpressible. God is the incomprehensible. God is the invisible. God is the ungraspable. Our human words always fall short of the mystery of God." 7. Lateran Council IV (paraphrased): "We can't tell who God is but we can tell who He is not and how everything else relates to Him." Prayer: God, reveal your heart to us today. Help us to remove all obstacles that's in the way of know you. Open our minds and hearts that we may readily receive love and let you love us. Amen.
Please pray daily the Holy Rosary for world peace and the Chaplet Of Divine Mercy for the conversion of poor sinners and for the forgotten souls in purgatory. Jesus I Trust In You
The sweetness to surrender…. The sweetness of God’s Love….. “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7
In terms of thinking about how God is beyond definition, beyond human expression, God is incomprehensible. I thought I had was how sometimes we try to put God in a box or are flesh and our Temptation that we can experience can be feeling like our problems are too big for God to handle. So I drew encouragement from thinking about how you know God is so big that you know we have all of this knowledge from hundreds and hundreds of years and yet we still can't perfectly capture in human expression who he is. I'm vision impaired and I'm using dictation on my phone I apologize for the typos
There’s a great irony (and a great pain) that the catechism implores people to have apophatic theology; yet most Catholics I talk to, even priests, still have cataphatic theology when they talk about God. I attribute this to the Enlightenment that changed a lot of thinking even, and perhaps especially, theology in the West. I agree with the Catholic catechism and the language it uses. But I mourn that this type of thinking about God and humility towards Him, especially the great mystery of God, is not the norm in the circles I’ve been in. Men speak as if they’ve figured God out and know everything about Him and His attributes. They presume to know everything about who He is.
Self-surrender and abnegation are 100% the challenge. Even if I dedicate the time and space to delve in the mental focus it is such a challenge when reading these snippets or going into prayer. Like walking into a room of exploding thought bombs. The imagination is the enemy :S. Getting into the zone is such a struggle but when it clicks and I learn something new, it's party hat time :D
Definitely, can't grasp/understand these words/sentences by myself. Thank you so much for everything you're doing & you'll be doing to help us all in this journey, and for everything you've put aside/give up in your life, you're always in our prayers, God Bless Fr. Mike!
I accept mystery and things that we can never understand about God but I have learned through my spiritual growth that the Holy Spirit will help us fill in the gaps and give us the grace to understand a small degree of our creator. But I love that this is being put into words that we can use to explain why without having to see it or understand it we believe it because we were created in his image and likeness the connection to accept and surrender and trust is the key to growing the relationship with God.
I'm glad your keeping the readings relatively short so they can be at least gone over twice. Thank you Fr. Mike. I pray this endeavor brings much fruition in the hearts and minds of those who read and hear wisdom and understanding of the Faith. Let us now put into practice what is taught that we gain further meaning and understanding through Christ our Lord: Wonderful Counselor; Mighty God, Everlasting Father; Prince of Peace.
Lord, You are the inexpressible, incomprehensible, invisible and ingraspable God. Continue to reveal yourself to us in your great mercy. The whole world reveals your glory, but sometimes our disordered appetites, imaginations, fear and difficult circumstances can blind us. Enlighten our minds to understand your truth and hold fast to it. Thank you for giving us the capacity to know you because you’ve made us in your image. Help us to humbly surrender to you day in and day out while denying our selfish desires. Even when our human words cannot capture you, Lord, we invite your Spirit to pray with us. We give you all praise. 🙏🏻

Thank you so, so much Father Mike Schmitz. I am so thankful for this new podcast The Catechism Of The Church in a year podcast with Father Mike Schmitz and Ascension Press. I have been Catholic my whole life. I was very, very poorly formed / Catechized. I decided to be baptized or to become Catholic when I was four years old. I grew up in a house / family that is not Catholic. I demanded to be baptized Catholic. My mother grew up going to a protestant church called Sana Doctrina it's similar to Mount Zion. When I saw that my mother was not giving me what I wanted so, I chose my God mother ( Maria Argueta, may her soul rest in peace ) and talked to her about my desire. I finally was baptized September 11 four days before my fifth birthday. My Catholic faith is very important to me. Viva Cristo Rey. 🙏😇👼❤️❤️❤️☕🍩😁
Thank you Father Mike. I loved the paragraph which says “All creatures bear a certain resemblance to God, most especially man, created in the image and likeness of God. The manifold perfections of creatures, their truth, their goodness, their beauty all reflect the infinite perfection of God”.
Yes, our God is beyond our understanding and "God transcends all creatures. How awesome is our God. Praise be His name forever. Thank you Fr. Mike for a very clear, deep and sweet explanation you are sharing with us. God bless you.
I am truly and deeply enjoying this catechism lessons - I came to the Church last Easter Vigil and we barely covered the catechism! God bless Father Smith!
I CANNOT WAIT to hear you tomorrow..! ❤️👍🏻 We are so blessed to have you with us..! Thank You, Lord, for the gift of Fr. Mike..! I am praying for you. ❤️👍🏻🙏🏻 Please pray for me..! ❤️👍🏻🙏🏻
These paragraphs are beautiful. My son was asking me this morning about how to imagine a god that always is and always was. I think it broke his little brain. It breaks mine too.
As respectful response to a previous comment, I am very happy to hear the appropriate CS Lewis references. I am here today in part thanks to him and Mere Christianity. The book caught me where I was, which was not ready to get into discussions of internal divisions inside Christianity. I had to build a case for God first. His apologetics reach the modern mind or least my modern mind so well. I wish he had become Catholic. But barring that, he offers us truth of the faith with wonderful reasoning.
GOD, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-totally surrendered to Him, draws near to us and 'we' draw near to Him. The truth is written on our hearts. We were made for Him. He, 'who is beyond us' 'is' and 'longs' that we know Him as Father.
Father Mike, thank you breaking down and further explaining the points of the catechism for all of us. It helps to further understand it. I am so grateful and I am praying 🙏🏽 for you. Good bless you.
St Carlos Acutis would be so happy that this podcast is so popular on UA-cam. We appreciate all the effort from the whole team to get these podcasts up.
Thank you Fr. Mike! I've been reading the catechism for the last year, and it is incredibly awesome. The depth and breadth of the philosophy is so very helpful, always telling us what we can say but acknowledging our limitations, which I personally am aware of! I've been steadily trying to write my testimony, but I'm so hindered by the inadequacies of my words to match my experiences. I think this process of reading the catechism with you and the Holy Spirit will considerably help me. I do wish that I had read it earlier in my life, but its never too late!
Praise Jesus for you, Fr. Mike, for all those at ascension press and for all those listening for helping the world grow closer to Our Heavenly Father through this podcast. Yours in the Love of Jesus through Mary and Joseph ❤️ Come Holy Spirit come! 🔥
This was enlightening, thank you, Fr. Mike. Honestly, I was raised secularly and lacked the funds for a Catholic education in my youth. Perhaps I wouldn't have appreciated it so much at that station in life. However, the discussion on "disordered loves" in the catechesis strongly resonates with Dante's Divine Comedy, which I only recently read as an adult. Thank you very much, and God bless!
Fr. Mike, you are in my prayers, and I am so grateful to God for you. I have started the Bible Course three times... this is the third time, but I am determined to finish it this year, and I LOVE the Catechism. I Love, Love, Love it, I love the way you present it. Thank you so much!
Dear Fr Mike and team, Thank you so much !This podcast gives me a way to articulate the truth about my catholic beliefs. Its a way to articulate what has been experienced in my heart .I am sitting back and saying ah yes… i experienced this truth.. it validates while it also expands. I wish this would be used in parishes all over the world.. we are thirsty! Thanks for giving us drink! May we all grow closer to Jesus- God bless you!
Thank you Father Mike for sharing the Catechism with us. I tried to read is years ago and no did not make it. But after two years of Bible in the year, I am so grateful that you are sharing this will us because now I will have read the catechism by the end of the year. I feel behind and on day eight and watching day 5. But I will catch up. Praying for Father Mike and anyone in need of prayers.
This is awesome. Thank you God for this amazing gift. We're all so blessed to be here. May God increase in us as we decrease. Praying for Fr Mike and his team and everyone who is on this amazing journey too. 🙏

I feel behind and on day eight and watching day 5. But I will catch up. Praying for Father Mike and anyone in need of prayers.
Each day gets better understanding the Lord. Thank you Father Mike and Ascension
