@@cameronadair4135 Gospel Music was fairly new to the European public. I recall that it was the 80s when black gospel music came into prominence. Those folk knew how to clap in time because of us pentecostals coming into the country during 50s and 60s. 😂 Seriously Mahalia would have told those brothers and sisters to clap in time.
@@keepingitrealandtruthful.5081Gospel singers were traveling to Europe by the 1960s, the Europeans acknowledged it as a genre related to the Blues, Jazz and R&B. Before that they were familiar with the recitalists who sang Negro Spirituals (Anderson, Roberson, Hayes and the Fisk Jubilee Singers). So it’s not like they were completely in the dark to the music coming out of the ‘Black Church’. Nevertheless, Mahalia caught their ears in the late 1940s because she reminded many European jazz and blues fans of Bessie Smith and that intrigued them. After they invited her there in 1952 the rest is history.
By the late 60's she had become as famous as a rock star. Whenever I hear her sing I get the spirit and that's saying something for someone who is not a religious person.
Religion is what you practice(repetition) show from the outside. Christianity is who you are in Christ Jesus. When you accept Christ Jesus as your Saviour, the Holy Spirit then makes room inside your heart..
I don't know what she was experiencing when she hit that last note of "Elijah Rock," but I felt ecstasy. That's the gift. When the singer makes you feel it. That's why people loved her. That's why I love her. She made me feel love for God.
In the words of Jesus to the mother of Zebedee brother which means " the sons of thunder": are you willing to drink of the cup that Jesus had to drink? In order to know God like Mahalia: are you willing to suffer the loss of ego? Your presumed Identity? Something to think about...
Amen. God sees the desires of our heart. He said if you draw nigh to me I will draw nigh to you. If we keep on desiring God he will draw closer and closer to us.
Minimally her voice accompanied with piano or organ and flat footed delivery. No frills, no over dressed wardrobe, just voice and being in her knowing she is doing God’s will. Sing Mahalia, sing!
It is so good to hear Mahalia preach as well as sing. I so look forward to hearing her sing and hopefully even meeting her when I get to heaven. Thank you for this post!
Now that was true ministry in action! The souls that she touched that evening! It's about using the gifts and talents that God provides to kingdom build and to glorify Him. THAT was Mahalia Jackson!
She felt tht thing..the anointing can be shut off jus becuz she stop singing..she had to let tht out she quoted Jeremiah when she said its like fire in my bones...only living saved n living holy will allow u feel the fire jus like tht..praise Him Mahalia
Elijah Rock shout shout sunset the rules of shame but I can tell the world he been a rock and a shelter for me keep on singing with the heavenly choir in my head I'll be up there singing with you one day and play that piano again rest in peace Mahalia🎉🎉🎉🎉🎹💽🎤🙏🌷💙💯💯💯👍
Respeto y admiro a grandes cantantes como Odetta, Rosetta Tharpe, Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, Aretha Frnaklin etc, pero en mi opinión, Mahalia Jackson fue la mejor voz y cantante femenina que hubo.
Oh my goodness did you hear the loud thunderous applause from those in the audience ? It was a sight to behold I just love this anointed woman of God beautiful soul
she moves me, from when I was a young child, like she moved my mother, my sisters.. she still moves me 50 years later, every time I listen to one of her great performances
Lord how I wish I could have been born in the days of Mahalia Jackson! This woman sings with every fiber of her being, what an awesome talent... She’s Holy Ghost filled and I feel it! She’s the QUEEN 👑! #period
I LOVE me some Mahalia Jackson. I love to watch her sing her hair into a mess! Just sing those wigs all down! A true Gospel Evangelist. I was raised on her records and she's just the greatest. I can't wait to meet her in person!
MAHALIA JACKSON had a lot of complications with diabetes; and she eventually passed on when her heart failed in 1972! She was definitely an awesome woman. Peace and love...
Mahalia Jackson was not a singer or performer. She was and is an Artist. An Artist that perfected her craft. She has cemented her place as the greatest gospel artist of all time. She is a treasure and we are fortunate that her spirit and legend lives on. Listening to her always lifts my spirits. It never fails. She never fails.
Mahalia Jackson touched the hearts, souls, and minds of millions of people, and even on today, her marvelous voice echos the joyful praises of godliness. She was truly an example of what a Gospel Singer is, and is not. You cannot find another today that stands so vividly before the people as an emblem of holiness as it relates to stardom and true dedication of her profession . . . as that is, giving total praise to the Lord, and not a mere entertainer. She "was not" a show, as is seem today.
AND...I love how she never changed her personality to be a cross-over artist, or changed for the venue. Truly a lover of Jesus. I love it when the Holy Ghost would come on her. Bless her heart.
Praise Him Mother Mahalia @4:59 "oww", it's like fire in my bones" Jeremiah 20:9..that same anointing that Jeremiah felt..u jus can't turn off the anointing..dear Lord..when u feel the Lord is a pleasant feeling u just feel joy u feel like running, leaping, doing somersaults..she jus tried to hold it in but its hard trust me..i would of been running all round the church lol! HALLELUJAH!!! DEAR LORD I THANK YOU!!
The best and in Mahalia`s interpretation unique spiritual to me, makes gooseskin when I hear it, also with the great Mildred Falls on piano in concert, you can hear her handclappin and when she beats with her hand the gran piano (nice vid documents from 61 from Hamburg, Stockholm and Amsterdam). You can see the prophet Elijah acting in the old time , leading Israel.
So far my Middle School chorus has sang 3 songs by Mahalia Jackson. But only me and the teacher know because they don't like listening to the good stuff.
It's amazing how much the culture of the African-American church has changed in just the last 60-70 years. Today, you cannot have enough dancing and music, whereas before you were sinning for waving your hand!
She was not just a singer. She was an anointed vessel of God.
Amen
