As an older hairdresser of 40 years who’s still loving doing hair but obviously having to learn new techniques I have to say your video is so informative, makes perfect sense to me and gives me inspiration, I thank so ❤️
I really really appreciate how you have these honest conversations about your prices, I understand these are luxury services it’s an art form. I’ve left some salons feeling ripped off because we didn’t communicate.
I have been a stylist for 30 years and these techniques are new to me and admittedly actually frightening but I can no longer avoid them to stay current. Your video helped me so much especially about the money piece. I did a client yesterday with a thicker money piece and her hair looked incredible when it was down but pulled back it looked odd. I failed to explain that to her or even know that I should have. She is coming back for me to weave a few low lights. I am also getting used to these techniques take longer when I used to do a traditional highlight, cut and style in 2 hours. I felt like I was doing something wrong taking so long I like that you explain the costs and how to communicate this to clients. Next thing to tackle is toning. I sweat the entire time the toner is on afraid I am going to ruin the work I just did and cover it up too much. But anyway I am going to watch all your videos. Thank you for teaching this old dog some new tricks.
Of course! Thank you so much for watching! With toning, pull the hairline pieces aside and tone last cause they grab faster, tone underneath first if your unsure how it's going to process. If anything grabs too dark, or whatever clarify it out if you need to. Usually it will pull the overtone out and leave the tone really pretty
Kristi, I want to come on here and say thank you! I did this exact foil method on my cousin who came to my school and it turned out so beautifully. I wish I can show you! Thank you times a million, you hold a special place in my heart and I always come back to your videos.
So true, I have been told SO many times “my hair is virgin,” or “natural.” You were smart to do the strand test. Her hair is so dark, I really thought it was colored.
I love how well you explain the process and price to your client. I have dark and thick hair and the times I’ve gone to get a balayage done, I’m always told “I’ll do my best to get a closest as I can to that tone”, which meas that I never know what my hair is going to look like. :( I thought that people just don’t know how to work with dark hair but here you are doing an impeccable job! So beautiful!! 🤍
“I thought her hair was to her shoulders” this sh*t happens to me all the time. I love the beginning of the video talking about pricing and appt time it’s raw real hairdresser complications
Wow just beautiful!!!! Your literally the first person I have seen who show the whole process of your Techniques thank you for sharing again this helped me so much.
love this , thank you for sharing. I love you breaking down the hourly rate because I have always hit that wall of figuring out what you're going to use before I can asses the client or , surprise! there are layers of color
Yes! I always give this is the max..... and over quote incase anything comes up. And if you dont need to charge so much, win win cause then the client is happy it wasn't sooooo bad
I really enjoy your videos! I like your realness, like how you don't front about your formulas (like you admit when you don't have correct measurements, lol, your appearance, everything! I incorporated your face framing techniques and your root shadow techniques ( which are sooo easy to understand, btw) into my services and WOW! Beautiful results! And thankyou for giving us the confidence to charge by the hour because girl, products do get expensive! I quoted $180 and it tool me 4 hours! I was pissed! Anyway, I'm subscribed!
Oh yay! Thank you so much for all that! That really makes me happy to know! I try being honest in everything cause I hate FAKE instagrammers and you tubers. Like girl, we are not always smiley and perfect. Lol And yes! Start charging your worth!
Thank you for the good tips! I like your confidence doing this job and that you have been very honest and clear explaining the client before starting, that's a good professional! Loved
Wow your work is top notch!!! I really love how you thoroughly explain everything of why you’re doing something or using a certain color or technique, that is so super helpful thanks so much for your videos I am learning so much from you! thank you❤️
I’m a hair stylist myself too. I love your technique and the hair results is very good. But most importantly is consultation. You re very detailed, I will take that advice to consult my client better. Thank you sis ?
Oh Kristi, thank you so much for this video!!! I have been wanting to do balayage but I couldn’t as all the videos I see the hair of the clients already in other colours.. Thank you thank you… Now I can do balayage
Thank you for the breakdown on the price, my rate is also around $70 an hour, I feel like stylist don’t want to put a price tag on their work or say how much it really costs, whenever I ask no one answers me, they’re like “ it depends on the length” and area you’re located “ but the more we are open about it to our clients and we value our work there’s less confusion and feeling that we are working hard and not seeing revenue. And also this particular method I call “Fiolayage” because I use foils, if it’s open Balayage is one price but foilayage is more expensive because I take thinner sections and more bleach versus the open Balayage where is “free hand” and quick for me. Thanks a lot great color and video😍
You do such great work, Kristi!! I love your work!! Wow!! It's a lot of work. That's for sure! That's why you guys charge a lot of money. However, it's worth it, if that's the color you want. I had highlights for five or six years. My hair is the same color as your client. I absolutely loved the highlights. My hair colorist used a honey blonde color on my hair. It was absolutely beautiful!! I loved it!! However, I learned that I needed to moisturize my hair with a deep conditioner at least twice a week for the highlights to look good. Since then, I decided to go back to the dark hair. However, I sure do miss the highlights. They made me look much younger, which is a good thing, since I'm 66 years old. Lol. The highlights blend in better with the gray hair, too. 💖
I'm getting foliage tomorrow and I have black hair I'm sooooo excited!!! This turned out great!!! She looks amaze balls 😍😍 I'm getting golden honey caramel highlights!
Thank you for the video. I’m a hairstylist. I’ve been doing hair for 37 years. I’m in doing Baliage foliage all of it. It’ll be very informative for people if they could see the color of the lighted hair before you tone. If it is a dark gold if it is a pale, gold, accelerate, etc.. And was the hair dry when you turned it was at work when you turned it. Also, let them know if it’s a dark gold. He may want to add more blue. If it’s a very light pale gold, you may want to add more purple picking your toner is everything. Also, it would’ve been great if you showed how the front came out.
Hi Kristi WOW!👏🏼 absolute stunning as always and my heart just felt for you when you said you didn't realise how long it was🙄 I remember when I was salon based and clients would telephone for costing and when asked the length of there hair it was always "just to the shoulder " and yet when they arrived there shoulders had "dropped to there waist" 😳🙄😉 yet then had to stick to the price quoted 😫 needless to say I soon asked them to call in the salon for a "proper look see" ! 😉 ooh blimey she was like a cross between Rapunzel and lady Godiva 🤣 but it was a beautiful result 👍 stay well Kristi and thank you as always Paul 😘💋x
Yes! I didn't know what to expect! Her hair was falling out of her pony tail that was wrapped up.... when she pulled it down, whoaaaaaaaaa ok yeah this won't be just 2 hours! 🤣🤣🤣🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
This is a awesome video!! Great job going through it all step by step. 🥰 a lot of videos don’t go through step by step like you did. Thank you so much. And I love that you did a long dark hair , both my daughters have long long dark hair and so this really was helpful. 💕😀!
I don’t agree with lower volume especially when you aren’t using heat. The volume cuts in half when you mix with anytime so the proactive time is reduced. My opinion and I’ve learned from many professionals. You are amazing!! I just don’t agree with that statement. 30 years in the business also. Educator, platform artist and lover of hair!!! Merry Christmas and God bless!!
I went to beauty school over 20 years ago and am not currently working in the Hair industry my specialty is more on the makeup side but your videos help me to do my own hair. My only question is if you have gray roots do you just go in and do a root tap and let it process before toning it?
Sie haben das sehr schön gemacht nur leider sehr ich nicht welche farben und wieviel sie davon benützt haben.?Schreiben Sie mir bitte wie sie die farben und welche oxid % sie benützt haben
Il post it on my Instagram there so you can check it out if you want, @kristi.at.the.cottage The service was like 6 hours long and I knew she was in a hurry to leave so I didn't want to take forever on pictures

Great video! Very descriptive! My only question is why start in the front before the back top section? Usually the front would need to be washed out before the back then unless you used a lower developer up front.
My Beautitian just bleached my dark brown hair and didn’t tone it and now it looks Cooper! I’m not happy at all! She did it last Thursday and I’m debating if I should use a dark color to fix it because I don’t know what to do!!! Thanks
I LOVE YOU KRISTI!!! Question, do you ever do root smudges on clients like this with a very rooty balayage. I’m only asking bc it looks so well blended like you did but you never mention it and don’t show the process. Just curious
I love this! Did you tone her at the bowl or dry at the chair and how long did you let process? I love this and have a client that wanted exactly this! Thanks for the tips! 😘
considering going to a salon to get a balayage, but i'm just thinking about maintenance... once you get it done, do you need to use a special shampoo ? how quickly does it fade on hair like this girl's ? does it start looking crusty if you don't go once a month to the salon ? so many question s🤣
So, just a couple of questions. First, I’m noticing that you are going all the way up the strands to the back combing on some of your sections and then only halfway up in other sections. Maybe it’s just the angle of the camera, but it looks like you are only “halfway” applying mostly on left side. 🤔 and I’m sure it’s the angle of the camera throwing me off! Lol! But can you explain that? I was getting a bit confused on your explanation of brightening more on the ends. But that’s my 52 yr old brain! Lol! And second. I ONLY ever use Blonde Me. There is a built in bonder already incorporated in the product and I was told NOT to use any additional Olaplex. Do you think it made much more of a difference?? Blonde Me, I’m my opinion, is the BEST lightener to ever use! I’m SO confident with it. But I still watch it closely and never take it for granted. I was so excited to see a tutorial using Blond Me!😃👍👍 gorgeous! You did an amazing job!
I just had my dark Long hair done yesterday where it was supposed to look like the one in this video but it doesn’t and I’m so unhappy with it. I will go to a different place to get it fixed. It sucks to pay so much money and not being happy with the results.
Hi, this is my first comment on UA-cam. I really enjoy watching and learning from your videos. Would you tell me how long it took you to apply the foils.
I feel so honored to be your first comment, thank you! Her total application took roughly 3-4 hours.... the total service time was roughly 6 hours. I always take a long time foiling, but I don't feel bad about it anymore. Quality over quantity!
@@hairbykristijennings6648 hi! related question, at some time of the application do you take out the first foils you made? or you take them all out once at the bowl?
I am gearing up to do something like this on a virgin hair black wig, any recommendations or shortcuts I can do? The wig is 22" and I plan on cutting 2-4 inches off, plus adding long layers. I want a similar color. Also how much Olaplex do you add per bowl (formula please?). Thank you Sooo much for your very detailed and excellent tutorials. I ❤U
Oh im not really sure about on a wig since it's already been heavily processed so idk how it will lift and also olaplex lists instructions for what to use
I have a young women who wants a balayage. I did a test strip. Bright near the scalp. Gold in the middle darker on the ends. She has layers of black die, not black. Level 4. I’ve been doing hair for 33 years and I’m worried about how I’m going to even put her hair looks like bands under the color. What should I do? Send her down the road? A lot of work, HELP!
Do you mean like minerals in the water? Anything that deposits and leaves warmth in your hair, toning a warm color will work with it instead of fighting against it.
Hi, I do have the same dark color natural hair. I want to highlight my hair with loreal (630 caramel). Can you please tell me the amount of 20 vol. used ? How much amount of developer and colourant creme should be mixed ?
As an older hairdresser of 40 years who’s still loving doing hair but obviously having to learn new techniques I have to say your video is so informative, makes perfect sense to me and gives me inspiration, I thank so ❤️

It's so hard! Quoting and then being like, ok no sorry 3x more for the length 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
First timer. Here
I love how you explained in detail the outcome of the techniques.
Thank you for this very helpful

Yes! That makes total sense! I think also it's good to put a price so client see and have a realistic expectation for what to expect services to cost.
Very nice! I like the technique you used as well. It wasn't overly complicated.
Yes! Just simple but time consuming!
Your hair work turned out beautiful...and you seem like a great trainer as well as colorist!

Yes, it can be very drying to the hair. Id imagine some highlights would start showing thru eventually...... they are pretty tones for sure!
Virgin hair is us stylists dream ❤

Wowwww this was gorgeous! Wish we could’ve seen the entire raw lift before toning. Great tip with the water. I’ll have to try that! 🤩
Love your videos I watch them religiously so relaxing and your techniques are amazing!

Hiii!! May I ask how it turned out?! :D
But it’s so pretty 😍
Thank you!
Always so creative...i think i'm addicted to your work and all your videos 😍😍
Heyyy! It's a good thing to be addicted to!

Great video! Very descriptive! My only question is why start in the front before the back top section? Usually the front would need to be washed out before the back then unless you used a lower developer up front.
@24:26 she shared that the client wanted it brighter around the face
Beautiful work girl. I like your way of doing things! #StylistSupportingStylist
Thank you so much! #stylistssupportingstylists, the only way to be!
Clients don’t always know what they want -they often come for advice
That's very true! And sometimes it's hard to give suggestions when they have absolutely no idea what they want. Makes it hard to get the right outcome
I love this!! Amazing work ♥️
Thank you so much!
I’m sharing your video👌🏼🤗
Oh yay! Thank you!
I love your work and I learn a lot from you please toning you use half color with two oxidant
Gorgeous!!!
Thank You !! Amazing Work !
Thank you!
Any recommendations for aftercare? Shampoo? Conditioner?
👍very nice blending of hair🙏
Thank you!
Gorgeous!
Thank you!
I'd love for you to do my hair!
I’d love that too!
My Beautitian just bleached my dark brown hair and didn’t tone it and now it looks Cooper! I’m not happy at all! She did it last Thursday and I’m debating if I should use a dark color to fix it because I don’t know what to do!!! Thanks
Oh man! Can you call the salon and ask to fix? I totally would
I LOVE YOU KRISTI!!!
Question, do you ever do root smudges on clients like this with a very rooty balayage. I’m only asking bc it looks so well blended like you did but you never mention it and don’t show the process. Just curious
Excellent work
Thank you!
I am black hair can you plz give me exactly that formal plz … i looooove your job soooo much
I love this! Did you tone her at the bowl or dry at the chair and how long did you let process? I love this and have a client that wanted exactly this! Thanks for the tips! 😘
I toned at the bowl, towel dried for 10 minutes roughly
Beautiful!!
Thank you!
I have super black thick hair. Is it possible to lighten hair like mine without bleaching?

Hi, this is my first comment on UA-cam. I really enjoy watching and learning from your videos. Would you tell me how long it took you to apply the foils.

@@hairbykristijennings6648 hi! related question, at some time of the application do you take out the first foils you made? or you take them all out once at the bowl?
Hey kristi! Love the video. Could you post a video on how to detangle the teasing on the hair when rinsing? 😊
Yes! Next time I do a big service like this, I'll make a video on detangling.
thank you! Will look forward to it
Have you made this video yet? I’m so curious about detangeling! I feel like is always takes soooooo long!!
Im getting balayage highlights for my 13th bday!

Oh im not really sure about on a wig since it's already been heavily processed so idk how it will lift and also olaplex lists instructions for what to use
Great video! I have a client coming in who wants something similar
When we have rust, will the rust disappear with this color combination?
Do you mean like minerals in the water? Anything that deposits and leaves warmth in your hair, toning a warm color will work with it instead of fighting against it.

Hi, I do have the same dark color natural hair. I want to highlight my hair with loreal (630 caramel). Can you please tell me the amount of 20 vol. used ? How much amount of developer and colourant creme should be mixed ?
Usually it's its 1:1 ratio, but the manufacturer's instructions should be in the box
