The easiest explanation for toner versus dye is this: Dye will shift the color of your hair up or down (lighter or darker), while toner will shift the existing color along the spectrum right to left (warmer or cooler). Hope this helps someone who may not still understand.
Can totally relate! Ive tried so many hairdressers to get the perfect balyage and each hairdresser has just basically gave me highlights..not blended or anything😭😭
I watched this after getting highlights and I now understand why my hairdresser gave me something I didn't think I asked for... I wanted partial saturation balayage and for it to be cute and subtle natural tones (I literally showed her the exact photo Brad used for partial saturation on the left) but instead she gave me large sliced highlights up to my roots in a platinum ash tone. I left the salon in tears because the difference was a lot harsher than I wanted.
Girl, same same. I’m still soo mad but nothing can be done. U can wait abit then try again if your hair feels healthy enough. Mine is fried! Also always ask if they use olaplex at the salon or not!
How do you manage the bleached hair, which always tangle! mine are good looking but falling. Hair wash days scary these days. I wanted something that needs less maintenance instead i got into mess for I don’t know how long! Any solution to avoid tangling?

I've literally been getting a full head of babylights for like 5 years and I always dread it because I have a ton of hair, so my hair appointments take like 4 hours - now I know there's a faster way!!!!!
I see this video is old but it’s helping me decide what I want I like a super blended look (baby lights) ok half of my head I care about the front more than the bottom half but I don’t want the bottom half to be super dark and love the idea of doing balayage with chunky pieces in the bottom and if it saves me and my stylist time then i love it whenever more. I’ve gotten a full head of baby lights multiple times and omg takes so long
Thinking about doing the partial balayage to add some extra dimension to my hair without a drastic change. I feel like the balayage would be perfect because I won't have to keep going in to get root touch ups! This video was a huge help! Love you Brad!❤
I seriously need Brad to save my hair! I was in a bad car wreck two years ago in Oct 2017. & this wreck took my ability to walk for two years(still not fully walking with out assistance or I am in my wheel chair.) Was supposed to lose my leg and I have had 25 plus surgeries/procedures to get my leg to be saved. Lost my entire ankle joint and 2 inches of my tibia! Now that back story is out there. My hair is DEFINITELY showing the medical/medications/anesthesia/ect that I have had administered to me! The trauma made hair fall out right after my wreck. & when I was in the wreck I have Looooong beautiful, naturally curly, bright Red hair. I went to get the red out because I couldn’t afford to keep up with it after not being able to work anymore- due to losing my ability to walk. So.. needless to say. It has been bleached, stripped, bleached some more, toned, I had a Malibu done as well. Now, I have light orange, brown, blonde, blue, silver, golden blonde, ect in my hair. My roots are the darkest blonde and the lightest brown you can have, almost a mouse brown with streaks of all these colors I recently listed! I seriously need help.. I lost so much hair already from this entire process. I know it takes forever and many processes to get Red out. But, in all seriousness. Can we make appointments with you? Ugh. Hellllpppp me. 😩
@@EmyN I lost my entire ankle joint. Am two inches shorter in they side and can’t bend my foot or my leg fully. Might end up being amputated, sadly! But I kept pushing and am walking again, even though they said I probably wouldn’t! Thanks for sending love, dear!!b
Thank you for a really informative video! I go to a stylist who is not only a genius with the scissors, but a colour expert. As I have short hair, she uses baby-lights, two-tones, and gives me a flattering auburn blend. As I'm in my mid-fifties, she makes me look at least a decade younger, it is such a flattering style! I love Balayage and baby-lights - much more flattering than a block colour.
Brad I love how you are always so positive and helpful, even if you don't like a hair technique (like the money piece) you're still like this is how you can do this if you want it.
Fun Fact : "Balayer" in French means "to sweep" (like with a broom) :-D "balayage" means "sweeped" or more literally "a sweeping" :-P. 'J'ai balayé le sol' - 'I sweeped the floor'. "Un balais" = "a broom".
THIS IS THE BEST I'm always trying to explain with non-stylist terms and now I won't sound so confused lol. My hairdresser is gonna be like girl who you been talking to?! lol
A few years ago I decided I wanted blue hair and I bleached my hair myself. And I was like omg why is my hair yellow? But then I remembered color theory and dyed it dark purple and it turned into a pretty ashy blonde. I was so happy. xD Yay for toning.
Lady Steele yes , for example I get them blond and my whole hair looks full blond, but the highlights still pop. But it looks good if you do it right🤷🏼♀️
Tip: if you have VERY fine porous hair, for some reason, they absorb the toner even if it is a lighter color. Tested on myself. You basically can color your brown hair almost blond with just a toner. Go toner and don't bleach (if not for highlights).
I love my fine porous hair for this reason - it takes dye and toner so easily. I have lots of grey and it is zero issue to cover it and keep it covered! But on the other hand.. if a hairdresser who doesn't understand it gets near it that "light brown" hairdye ends up black on my hair.
I'm getting my hair done today for the first time ever... I only ever dyed it once with an Arctic Fox dye almost 7 years ago and that washed out in a month .-. I was so nervous and had no idea what to begin to ask for but thanks to your videos I feel allot more confident
Love love love this color on you! I miss having my hair salon colored. I had to quit my job to care for my Mom and that is one expense that had to go away. Love living vicariously through all your videos!
Thank you, it helps. The worse is, which is common, when you show pics and explain. Stylists are so busy indulging in their stories, with emotion that they don't fully listen, are not grounded and cant recall - so most times it doesn't end up like you had asked. When I asked for face framer highlights, I ended up with subtle darker flat 'morticia' front and dimensional hair in back instead, removing all the ranges of highlights I naturally had. Thats no bueno. But you end up leaving with your wallet lighter and now you have hair memory of all their drama. Our hair is an antennae, not to be absorbing someones' frustrations about their lovers etc. It is terrible to let someone leave with bad energy into the strands. I will not go to a stylist ever again. Maybe you'd be different Brad - but It's too common of a scenario.
Thank you SO much for this. I’ve been in the process of going from plum purple box dye to blonde over the past year. I’m finally at the stage of getting a full head of highlights on Friday, and my head will be blonde! This vid has given me so much more confidence! Love you 💕
When Brad said “ I don’t know anyone named root smudge!” It made me laugh so hard because it made me think of “ no I neva been to uba java. “ Anyone else??? No...just me ? 😂🤷🏻♀️
Stumbled across this video accidentally, so glad I did. Life changing!! Now I know why I’m waisting hundreds of dollars and not getting the result I want. So much power in knowledge. Thanks for sharing.
I just got my hair done and I wish I would’ve seen this before. I asked for something and my stylist didn’t understand and I got something totally different.
Where has this channel been all my life..I just barely found it. I've been looking to do my hair for sooo loong( im talking about almost 2years) but don't know exactly what it is I want. My hair is long and thick and had a few people mess it up before even permanently a couple years back. She put bleach in my hair and under blow dryer and kept it on for a long time until i felt it was burning my scalp and hair hasn't been the same since. I had patches of blond near crown and its been crumby thin since in those areas.😭Even after these years I think about it everytime I do my hair.. so now I just want a nice look...here i am studying before I go blindly to stylist. Your hair looks superb👌 btw.
I was about 22 in the early 2000's and wanted "chunky" blond highlights in my dirty blond hair. The hairdresser suggested I get a light brown highlight in between... I don't know what she did wrong, but it was WHITE & BLACK!!!!😱 I looked like Corella Deville, my sisters said it made me look 10 years OLdeR. And you know your sis is going to be brutally honest... It was NOT a look🙈!!!
the same thing happened a few years ago woth my mom. she has dark brown hair, the hair stylist fucked up and bleached her hylights BRIGHT WHITE. she looked like a skunk lmao
Girl I had almost the same thing happen! All of the girls in my class had highlights and I wanted them so bad. I finally convinced my mom and she took me to her friend's salon... I walked out with Yellow Fucking Spots. Literally just random chunks of yellow. It scared me off of blonde to this day, 16 years later.
I went to the hair salon today and got a balayage and it’s platinum! I told him I wanted highlights but like triple the amount he would normally do and he said so like a balayage and I was like sure! I’m in love with it and it’s pretty much white! I’m in love😍
Thanks Brad. You should get your cosmetology teacher license, if you don’t already have it, because your very good at getting people to understand the complexity of hair color.
My hair stylist combines a bunch of baby-lights, then sat.balayage, and then a shadow root. My natural hair color is a very dark cool brown, which I don’t love, but I go a long time between coloring my hair, so I like it to grow out looking as natural as possible (hence using a shadow). I end up with a lovely sandy beige “BRONDE”, so shimmery and lovely! (My profile photo is not a reference, that was a bright yellow blonde I had years ago).
Thank yoooou!! I’m getting highlights for the first time and I literally said to my hairdresser what you said people tend to say at the beginning. Now I know how to communicate highlight preference. Xx
The only time I went to a salon to get my hair done I asked for balayage, and they gave me grey highlights, I looked like I was going grey, it was awful. I bleached the ends myself and faded it up and it was perfect. I have since done my own hair every time, blessing in disguise maybe
Hi Handsome....love your sweater...I just went to a new stylist...came highly recommended I showed her a highlight I liked and told her to surprise me with a cut and color. I love it...had it done 6 days ago. Everyone tells me they love it.
I wish I had seen this video before I went to the hairdressers! I asked for a subtle balayage on my naturally dark hair and came out the salon with big, brassy highlights and yellow-ish pieces all over 🙈 THIS is why we go to box dyes...because at least it’s cheaper if we screw up 🙃
Same thing happened to me! moreover, i wanted balayage as i heard its needs less maintenance . However, my hair are so tangled all the time. And falling out even after I combed it multiple times which never happened to me before Balyage. I am just waiting to grow out the bleached hair and have my old natural hair back. Anyone faced tangled hair? What did you do? I really need to know!
@@amansrankhangura after getting what you got done did you use purple shampoo? It is a must after trying to go blonde. I went with a friend and got one and I have medium a little on the darker side brown hair. The first time they got it pretty light but yes, it had yellow patches. I never experienced some excess tangles in my hair but you do have the occasional 5 hairs that might come out in the shower which always happened to me... I had to go a second time to get it touched up and blonder. Well, they got it blonde. Now I want blonde hilights in the middle of my hair all of the way up to the top but it's going to come out yellowish I'm sure and the bottoms will be that platinum that I achieved on my ends! My friend convinced me to go again on the 16th😒 and I'm going to see what they say. I don't know how they will make it blend in. Salons are so expensive for nothing!
@@henrysmith180 NO! Salons are so quick to say oh, I don't want to damage your hair.. you shouldn't go any lighter. I said cut my hair an inch and I'm out of here. I got my friend to bleach it and we started at the bottom instead of the top and biiiiggg mistake. Since the brown was mostly on the top of my head we should have started there but we did the bottoms and she rushed the top. By the time we got to the left part of the top my underneath was about to fall out! Lmao it's not to bad but from now on a salon won't do it and no more bleach for me. My ends were literally falling off and I was screaming. Thats when I went for a cut 😆😅🤣
Tia King same , a few years ago I went to dye my hair for the first time. I had no clue of what the fuck should I do it so obviously I went to the hairdresser . They picked a nice color and now every time I go I just sit and let them do lol

"You know, blonde and brown hair, Blair Walnut. Make me a walnut too"
Sarah H, lmao
lol I loooove Blair Walnut
I literally just got highlights today XD apparently I got partial saturation highlights. Good to know for next time. Props to my hairdresser knowing what to do when I said I want to bring summer back but still kinda winter XD
I've literally been getting a full head of babylights for like 5 years and I always dread it because I have a ton of hair, so my hair appointments take like 4 hours - now I know there's a faster way!!!!!
Brad,
1. Your hair looks AMAZING
2. You have literally taught me so much about hair, thank you
I was literally just thinking about getting highlights or balayage!
Edit: now I know that balayage is under the realm of highlights
I see this video is old but it’s helping me decide what I want I like a super blended look (baby lights) ok half of my head I care about the front more than the bottom half but I don’t want the bottom half to be super dark and love the idea of doing balayage with chunky pieces in the bottom and if it saves me and my stylist time then i love it whenever more. I’ve gotten a full head of baby lights multiple times and omg takes so long
Brad Mondo got a look going on, We heart it.
that hi beautiful every time makes me really happy
Julia Grudges, right?
Thinking about doing the partial balayage to add some extra dimension to my hair without a drastic change. I feel like the balayage would be perfect because I won't have to keep going in to get root touch ups! This video was a huge help! Love you Brad!❤
I love how your hair is done it really brings out your eyes
Hope you can get that sorted and feel better soon!
Naomi Pommerel thanks doll! I still have not got in, sadly. I have been trying to just take care of my hair and then I will get it fixed! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
God bless and He loves you! Jesus cares for you
Omgg I hope you are ok now!!
@@EmyN I lost my entire ankle joint. Am two inches shorter in they side and can’t bend my foot or my leg fully. Might end up being amputated, sadly! But I kept pushing and am walking again, even though they said I probably wouldn’t! Thanks for sending love, dear!!b
When you discover what you get is actually called babylights and not just "hey girl, yes the usual"
Brad: Thinks silver hair is getting old
Brad: Not a big fan of short hair on the sides
Brad:
Someone should tell him lmao
lol
I’m dead 💀
Everyone: listening to what brad says
Me: staring at his face and falling in love!🔥❤️
Maya vxl same but he’s gay
I love Tom Holland we all do but yeah
Puffiii uh I wanna be his best friend!
When I'm having a bad day I watch Brad Mondo just to cheer myself up.. "hi beautiful" does it everytime. ❤️
I literally just got highlights earlier today 🤦🏼♀️ on the bright side, they turned out well and my stylist and I bonded over you!
Brad I love how you are always so positive and helpful, even if you don't like a hair technique (like the money piece) you're still like this is how you can do this if you want it.
Last time I went to a stylist:
Stylist: We could do some highlights and really bring out your waves.
Me: Screw that, make it all purple.
truly needed this 😂 i’m having a hair makeover next week and can’t find an exact photo of what i want
I just want to let you know that you saved me and can now tell my hairstylist about root smudging! Forever love you!
Fun Fact : "Balayer" in French means "to sweep" (like with a broom) :-D "balayage" means "sweeped" or more literally "a sweeping" :-P. 'J'ai balayé le sol' - 'I sweeped the floor'. "Un balais" = "a broom".
I'm going to destroy my hair so he can react to it
You'll be serving a great cause😂
I will totally watch it lol it’s kinda my guilty pleasure
Lmao, yes.
Good idea! 👍
😂
I normally don't get impressed with a video! I LOVED LOVED LOVED this...very informative, well presented and fun to watch! Thanks Brad
Who else wants brad to do their hair? 😩.
Meeeeeeee
Mèeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedeeee toooooooo9
THIS IS THE BEST
I'm always trying to explain with non-stylist terms and now I won't sound so confused lol. My hairdresser is gonna be like girl who you been talking to?! lol
Brad you're doing the lord's work. It's one of my worst fears to be a dumb client but your channel has educated me THANK YOU!
i dont even wanna get my hair done im just here for brad and his energyyyyyyyyyyyy
A few years ago I decided I wanted blue hair and I bleached my hair myself. And I was like omg why is my hair yellow? But then I remembered color theory and dyed it dark purple and it turned into a pretty ashy blonde. I was so happy. xD Yay for toning.
I thought you wanted blue?
@@elliott209 you need a white blonde base if you want to go bright blue, if she put blue over the yellowy colour it would have gone green!
Brad has such a huge heart ! I love him and wish him the besttt
I get a full head of highlights everytime I go to the salon. I love them!!
Lady Steele yes , for example I get them blond and my whole hair looks full blond, but the highlights still pop. But it looks good if you do it right🤷🏼♀️
I feel like I’ve hit a brick wall with my hair. I want to just sit in your chair and let you work your magic. Transform me. 😩
What color of toner for example?
Yessss living for this look! 😩❤️
I’m a VERY new stylist and this taught me SO MANY THINGS cosmetology school didn’t
Brad, do a video on people that have gray hairs on how to handle the roots after they've done these techniques you just showed.
CAN 👏🏼 WE 👏🏼 GET 👏🏼 A 👏🏼 CURLY 👏🏼 VERSION 👏🏼
YES PLEASE
AGREED
YESSS💗
If I’m not mistaken, the same procedures apply, just with curly hair, you’d start with straightening it first
Erin Moore that makes absolutely 0 sense. It wouldn’t look the same curly as it would straight. And not every curly person wants their hair straight.
You couldn’t have done this before I ruined my hair like a week ago 😂
did you post a video?
Theresa Chacon no but there’s pics of it before and after on my insta
OMG SAMMMMME I DID MINE NEW YEAR AND IT BE FOOKED
OMG yeah for me it was perfect timing like dayumn he saved me 😂😂💕
I was about 22 in the early 2000's and wanted "chunky" blond highlights in my dirty blond hair.
Oh I loved that movie!
But yeah I can bet you were grateful when your hair grew out
Girl I had almost the same thing happen!
I’m in love😍
are you naturally blonde?
"who is that? I don't know anyone named root smudge!" 🤣 Yep that's me, so thank you Brad
Same though
Thanks Brad. You should get your cosmetology teacher license, if you don’t already have it, because your very good at getting people to understand the complexity of hair color.
Love this video. PLEASE go into more technical details about root shadows and how you like to do them. Sounds fascinating.
(My profile photo is not a reference, that was a bright yellow blonde I had years ago).
me: I'd like a balayage
literally almost every hair stylist in my area: ........???? What's that?
Yikes ohh noo
SAME IM SO PISSED
Ikr! It's so frustrating not having any trustworthy professional nearby, I think I'll end up doing my own hair
i’m getting one from my aunts niece who is my hair stylist today!
Um what? It’s a technique every hair stylist should know... that is concerning...
Brad Mondo your my fav person ever, thx for always explaining :p
Hi Handsome....love your sweater...I just went to a new stylist...came highly recommended I showed her a highlight I liked and told her to surprise me with a cut and color. I love it...had it done 6 days ago. Everyone tells me they love it.
I wish I had seen this video before I went to the hairdressers! I asked for a subtle balayage on my naturally dark hair and came out the salon with big, brassy highlights and yellow-ish pieces all over 🙈 THIS is why we go to box dyes...because at least it’s cheaper if we screw up 🙃
Rebecca Lauren same thing happened to me a month ago!
@@gocowboys51411 How did your hair appointment go? Did you get what you wanted?
I have my first color appointment a week from now and this video is going to be a life-saver. Thank you so much!
Thank you! Best video I've watched today regarding hair lightening. I've been wanting to go blonder for so long.
I legit just asked my hairdresser for “bare highlights” and she gave me what I wanted sooo?? No fancy words needed 😂😂
Tia King what the f are bare lights?? Ahhaha
Say what ?
Tia King same , a few years ago I went to dye my hair for the first time. I had no clue of what the fuck should I do it so obviously I went to the hairdresser . They picked a nice color and now every time I go I just sit and let them do lol
Are you British bc I feel like I understood this comment? 😂😂
@@BradMondo it means lots of highlights 😂
I’m getting highlights after my hair grows a certain length this is the perfect video for me to watch.
Thanks! You’re a great teacher Brad 💇🏼♀️ Balayage is a French term for Sweeping the colour. I think this will help a lot of us to know what to ask for on our next salon trip!
Some people do balayage with foils called foilyage
If you post something- I click! Before even reading the title 😭✌🏽😂
