My problem with numerous figures in American History is that many of them are just horrible excuses for human beings. Take Trump's favorite dead president, Andrew Jackson, a cruel slave trader & owner and the man responsible for the Trail of Tears. That some of Trump's MAGA Hatters have hated on a Halfbreed like me and even yelled at me to deport myself to Mexico when some of my ancestors have lived in what is now Canada & the United States for over 14,000 years....
Andrew Jackson was an *interesting* person. But I'd say to that, while certainly there are exceptions on the good and especially bad side, if you're looking through a modern lens, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone in history who holds up to that coming out looking good. And when I say "history" you don't even have to go back that far where that's true. With the exception of outliers like Mister Rogers, you can always find things questionable or awful from a modern lens about almost anyone. So generally best to judge them more through the lens of their own time than ours. -Daven

I have loved these Quincy-sponsored videos so much. Incidentally, my wife and I almost used Quincy as a middle name for our baby born last month, and I had stipulated that we would be pronouncing it correctly if we did thanks to these!
Excellent presentation Dave! You're really growing into your place on this channel and I look forward to your videos! As an aside, I think Quincy should have them as they were gifted to them by our President and rightfully belong there especially now they will have a safe place to store and display them.
This was a very interesting documentary. Now I have the desire to visit a Presidential library or maybe 5 and take some road trips to do so over the next 2 years.
41:54 This is very true. I just told some people about how John Quincy Adams created the standard measurements the USA uses today, and I remembered because of feeling so much like I could relate to him from your video.
it was so surreal that my hometown sponsored this, I didn't expect that and felt all truman show-y for a sec LOL. makes sense tho, city of presidents. :] COOL!
I know that the collection was supposed to never be split up, but given the circumstances, Quincy and Boston must be able to reach some sort of agreement. I’m leaning towards Quincy, at least somewhat. Excellent work as always, Daven.
this has been one of my favorite videos from this channel. granted, i'm biased - i don't have a background in records management, but it is ancillary to my day-to-day. and i have friends who (as they put it) "went to library school" and came out records managers for the government. (speaking of very well-paying jobs with relatively low college debt... that's a career path for people interested in details, process, and history.) for sure, i'll be sending this link out to several people. i was personally interested in the structure of creating libraries and that history... it's totally fascinating to me how funding structure is intermingling with policy. Reminds me a bit of places like the Blair House, which has some private funding while serving executive functions. The between-the-lines is hard to read here for people who've probably never seen or understood the shoestring budget usually assigned by congress to facilities serving in those capacities. frankly, NARA has my respect, given its mission requirements weighed against its constraints.
With all of the Boomer blame the only gripe I have is dropping President Carter for Reagan. I went to the Carter Center to celebrate his 99th birthday.
...Well,it would make more sense for someone from the country,to be discussing its presidents. Its not like Simon writes his own scripts, but, from the viewer perspective,it's logical to have someone who is from the U.S.
Kind of what Simon and I thought too. :-) Deep American history makes more sense for me to host. :-) And as I wrote it too, in my voice and all as well. :-) -Daven
hey, one fundraising goal at a time. Right now his donors are trying to keep his butt out of jail. Besides that, he’s shredded or flushed a lot of the material!
You said $5000 equals $90000 today. No way in 1800 you could buy 40 acres, cleared, with a cabin I upstate New York, for $500. Do you think you can buy 40 acres for $4500 today.
Great video on a very important subject, though I am still a little sour about Obama not having some kind of library in his own state as well as my own. Also the rant about history in school is one of the many reasons I plan to homeschool my daughter. History is about people and our leaders are human and not gods.
Hence why i think modern presidents (trump and biden included, as offensive as they are to many there have been many presidents in the past just as controversial) should have their own libraries with documents of their lives and decisions, with works from both sides of the political spectrum as well as outside it included.
America’s history is truly amazing so much in such a short amount of time!! As an Aussie bird with not the best school curriculum…. I would absolutely love to see you cover some of Australia’s history… could be interesting right?😅🤷♀️
*Where I think BIden and Trump will put their Presidential Libraries:* 45. *Trump:* Probably in the empty lot just next to Mar-a-Lago. Though I don't know how zoning laws will allow it. 46. *Biden:* Definitely in the University of Delaware, on the southern part of the campus.
Such true facts about teaching history. I hated history in high school because the teacher was super super boring and all we learned about were wars and dates of wars, which we had to memorize. Yawn. I had to take history in college and the teacher was animated, interesting, and taught us fun stuff like how many alcoholics were in colonial usa. I got an A in that class.
Curious as to where the presenter found the pronounciation of Quin-Z rather than the far more common, (and dare I say correct?) pronunciation of Quin-C. Having had both sets of grandparents live in Quincy, Illinois when I was growing up, and growing up in Virginia, very near Montpelier, the home of President John Adams, hearing him say Quin-Z over and over makes this video nearly unwatchable. *sigh*
This may shock you, but the video about Quincy, sponsored by Quincy, talking about John Quincy Adams is pronouncing the name correctly. If you're pronouncing Quincy, Illinois Quin-C you're wrong. Quincy, Illinois is named after John Quincy Adams (hint Adams County) , who is named after John Quincy who pronounced his name Quin-z. Also, what does Montpelier have to do with John Adams?
Nah. He'd build at Mar a Lago and charge serious money to visit (and you would have to book three nights top dollar accomodation as well - always the grifter). But there was that bit about an endowment based on floor space - I see problems - he would have to have the biggest, that would cost real money to the government, and real money is in short supply for the Donald. As for the building itself - it remains to be seen if there is enough bad taste left in the world to achieve the appropriate aesthetic. But overall it would be good if his version of events was preserved in a form he could not keep changing as reality catches him out. 🤞
Most countries require pressing need. For example, France still refuses to declassify rifle production from the 1800s. The Wikipedia page for Berthier rifles used to say 2-8 million, now it just says 2 million+😅
Considering the events taking place in 1944 there would be documents that are a matter of global security today. Imagine all of Oppenheimer's work being released to the general public, some terrorist group will create their own Hiroshima with that information.
For the most part after 80 years almost everything should be declassified with 1 exception (that i can think of): Some aspects of our military system are still in use from that long ago. 1. It works, and modernization invites potential issues that didn't exist. 2. It's impossible to remotely hack a thing that existed before the internet, and most people have no knowledge of such ancient technology So outside of stuff like that open the books. I know why not though we (the US) did some shady stuff post WWII. MK Ultra, CIA drug trafficking, and Iran weapon deals while they held Americans hostage all sound like insane conspiracies that were 100% true.
Because they've been the leaders of one of the most important and influential nations in history. Because it's an amazing country which is a force for good in the world.
Because millions of people aren’t brainwashed by the media and other corrupt institutions. You’ll be surprised at what you learn when you conduct your own research. I dont appreciate content sponsored in this manner. If the City of Quincy, that is actually part of Boston now, wants an advertising channel, Quincy can start its own, clearly marked as such, and not hijack a large subcriber base on a much loved channel with an entire series devoted to Massachusetts. Especially when some of us know very well how much of their favorite legends are bullshite that never happened that way. It really is annoying how white men have to Hero-ify everything into legendary status, even if they have to get a loet to lie through his artisticly licenced teeth. And I was being groomed for Madison Avenue, ffs!

Carter was the first president I remember as a child. He always seemed like a decent person to me.
The Boston library should keep the digitized copies! 😂
26:46. What is this! A museum for Ents?!?
