Intel ARC A380 and Davinci Resolve Studio - A decoding prodigy?

- The Intel dedicated GPU's like the Intel ARC A380 include intel's quicksync hardware encoders and decoders for fluid processing of h.265 and h.264 footage. Unlike the Nvidia gpu's the implementation includes support for 4:2:2 chroma subsampled footage from the Sony A1, A7S3 and other cameras on the market. While it doesn't have the raw power of my RTX 4090, does offloading the decoding of 4:2:2 footage in Davinci Resolve Studio 18 warrant the inclusion of an A380 in my system?

I'd love to see how that A380 performs as the only GPU in a lower-end editing rig with a mid-range CPU. How the timeline performance compares to an nvidia GPU, how it works with Fusion, etc.
John, I wish you could make a video that shows any performance enhancements during editing (even if subjective). You see, every time someone tests a new GPU, it's all about encoding or decoding. But what about if we had an Intel integrated graphics card to do the 10bit 4:2:2 *decoding*, and an nvidia or AMD card to do the REST of the work (e.g. plugins, grading, effects, fusion etc). Is that even possible, or would Resolve just use the Intel card only because that's the one that can hardware decode 4:2:2, and won't use the discrete card at all? That's the kind of question I have that I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I basically need to know how Resolve works with two cards, when one is setup only for decoding, and the other one for gpu processing only.
You nailed exactly why I bought the thing. I intended to run it with my 5950x, 4090 machine and let it handle only the 4:2:2 footage. Unfortunately I could not get it to offload the decoding from the CPU to the intel GPU with the 4090 in there. I recently switched to an intel processor 13700k which has a 4:2:2 decoder in it so I’m going to see what i can get done with that and offloading
@@johnsfilmsllc Check my recent forum post on BM's forum, under DR's subforum, about Intel ARC gpus. There's a guy replying with screenshots on how to make it work, and he says "make sure you don't connect a monitor to the iGPU".
Question, do you have a Nvidia or AMD GPU from the 3000 series or 6000 series as AV1 is great and is looking great for all platforms.
However I am curious to know just using the intel arc for the AV1 encoding for renders comes out better still with the older gpus.
Its far cheaper to get an intel arc GPU if you just want AV1 with existing systems then any of the new gpus from AMD and nvidia

Well you mostly work with your own footage. So either you work in 4:2:2 all the time > it's worth it, or never and then it's not worth it.
And if you can chose the system just go with an intel system with iGPU (here a test of hyperencode with both the iGPU and the intel arc is still needed)
Agreed, and in the past I've been irritated with the 4:2:2 while editing with my 5950x and 3090. With the 4090 it hasn't been as bad (though there have been microcode, firmware and other CPU chipset updates since then). Honestly I expected to show a Intel win here and keep using the card. Now I'm dropping it from the system...
Probably the best combination intel 13900k iGPU quick sync and 4090ti.
Intel UHD 770 iGPU can decode any flavor of H.265
I just switched to a 13700k and 4090 pretty great so far :)

Hello ! I have purchased a 380 to try that too. I have a 9900k and a 3090.
I cant get the a380 to do the decoding during the playback of the timeline. Its only the cpu that is working. The clips are longGOP 422 H265 from a Lumix S5ii.
I have tried selecting the QSV only in the decode menu. Nothing works. It works only for h264 8bits files from my gx9....
I dont really understand whats happening 😢 any idea ?
for a while time, I was finding if my I7-7820x ( no IGPU) , could management 10 bit 422 videos of my a7iv, my GTX 1070 ti can not do it, if I add a A380, can I do it and work in premiere pro? it would be a litte upgrade of harware but with a huge benefit in workflow.
I haven’t tested in premiere. I had to do some gymnastics with bios and driver versions to get the two cards to place nicely with each other

How was the A380 connected to the CPU. Just noticed that uncompressed 8k 10bit footage oversaturates a PCIe 3.0 x4 connection. So even without back and forth you would at least need PCIe 4.0 x4 connection and that is with great transfer efficiency. So if you have the A380 hooked up to the chipset with a shared by 4 link it might starve. Better would be a direct x8 link to the CPU (which limits the 4090 also to x8)
You are correct and great clarification, had x8 and x8 configuration, the limiting of the 4090 doesn't hit me in video editing
How did you export to AV1 in davinci resolve? I thought it wasn't available. I've had a good look many times myself
I'm using studio, don't know if it i locked to that but render to container MP4 and it defaults to it for me

Nice nice - interessting is - HOW this work with ProRes 4444 and so - because i use Arri cameras and/or sometimes ZCAMs with ProRes ...
Would the results be any better if you used an A770/A750 instead of the A380?
The compute tasks would be a bit better but the decoding would be the same

"Should I use the Intel ARC A380 for it's Hardware Decoder" - Wow, "it's" is even highlighted as a potential spelling mistake and you still left it uncorrected in that card in the final video. Some diligence right there. Wonder where else you're paying as much attention … or even less still.

Could you by any chance get an access to those M1 Pro/Max MacBooks or Mac Studio? It feels like those have pretty good encoders/decoders, especially for 4:2:2 footage. Would they be faster in Resolve than your current setup?
My testing on the M2 ipad tells me you are right (they have the same media engine the Pro/Max do) and they would be pretty freaking good (likely beating these if the use is just cut and color)

I have disabled the built-in graphics card in the BIOS.
Nothing happens when starting the DaVinci Resolve. Then disable device a380. .restarting DaVinci Resolve respond cannot initialization OpenGL！. @@johnsfilmsllc
Hi who would like to chime in? Would 4070ti be strong enough for editing 4k video in Resolve using Sony xavc s 4k clips from the Sony zv1 videocamera?
