That’s definitely not true I know for a fact NY is no different than basically any other state all you need is a high school diploma or GED I know too many cops in New York personally that brag about how easy it was and how few hours of training it took they say it’s harder to become a barber or hairdresser than to be a cop

It is if you want specialty positions. It depends on the agency but a college degree can be pretty useless with actual police work, therefore no degree is required and most agencies won’t pay more for a degree unless it’s related to policing like a criminology degree.

In my opinion, all of them should require a minimum of an associates degree in criminal justice or law. It teaches responsibility, and a good starter amount of information for a future officer before they go to the Academy.
I agree. They are basically useless degrees now. I've been researching about it becuase that's what I wanted to major in. I will most likely do a social work degree with a minor in criminal justice. But I'm still figuring it all out.
Every cop I have talked to has told me to avoid a degree in CJ or criminology. Everything you'll need to know for the streets should be taught in Acedemy and FTO, and what isn't will be learned by experience and going above and beyond with your own studying. If all you have is CJ, you won't have many options if you have to quit, get injured, don't like it, etc.

This does differentiate from department to department and job to job. Such as, being a normal police officer is something that some departments will not really care about that college degree, others will not require it but will have a preference toward it, and others will require it with different standards. Working for the state it can differ I'm guessing in other states, but here in Ohio if I wanna join Highway Patrol I don't need a college degree at all but I'm pretty sure to be a k9 officer for highway patrol you would need one. And though some might qualify these as different jobs from being police I'm still counting them, working as a CO usually doesn't seeing as you can join at 18, being a parole officer does require it last I checked, and being like a marshal requires a degree as well if I'm not mistaken.
I can reference Alabama. The hiring process to be a law enforcement officer requires: passing ACT work keys assessment (3 sections with passing scores). Some here require a pre employment test like the civil service exam. Its ranks you within the hiring group. You need a High school diploma. You must obviously complete the polygraph, two psychological testings, a character and personality test included, some require you to sit down with a psychiatrist during the process. You must complete a rigorous physical test then complete a medical exam. You must complete your back ground check, some require finger printing. Then a board or high ranking interview. Your information must be 100% precise when filing out the police academy online attendance section. You go through a secondary check prior to attending. If any information is wrong, you will be declined entry. THEN you are required to complete 12 weeks of basic police officers academy. Its a pass or fail academy. The hiring process can take up to a year before being accepted into the academy.
Here in BC Canada. Municipal Police Agencies require 30 credit from a post-secondary! Only required for two reasons!! 1. Every officer brings their own experience and education. 2. It’s a plan B incase policing isn’t for them. They can rely on their education to get them somewhere else!!

My military career comes to an end in September after eight awesome years. I start the police academy in October to pursue a job I’ve always wanted nervous is an understatement but I’m extremely excited.
In South Florida literally none of the departments give a shit about a college degree, they care way more about the academy certification, meaning you paid yourself.
My sisters friend in Long Beach police department said it is honestly better to study some law in college then joining but in her department and most departments that I know of you require a highschool diploma and that’s it

Most states require only a high school diploma. Federal jobs such as FBI require a 4 yr degree. I’ve found that if you want to move up (promotion) you need a college degree. Personally I have a masters degree, LEO 18 yrs.

You probably should of mentioned that almost every department does it differently. And many of them do require college credit hours
