Love the Macintosh plus line in the beginning
I've been been pondering for the last 5-10 years if millennials/gen-z would experience nostalgia for the compression artifacts found in variable shitrate mp3s pirated from limewire, the same way GenX has nostalgia for tape flutter and vinyl hiss.
My hunch has been confirmed in the form of an effect pedal.
shitrate, baby!!
It’s the sound of that Nmesh album Dream Sequins. If vaporwave/synthwave has any classic albums, that is surely one. How forward thinking is chase Bliss, this flavor of filter didn’t exist until goodhertz and now in a hardware pedal form. Kudos, Congrats and Shout outs.
p r i c e y !
if good heartz started to make hardware version of their plug in, i think that i'm gonna need a lot of money
I'd go nuts for hardwave vulf compressor
Fun fact @JorbLovesGear and @Tappo244 , Vulf was created based upon the compression algorithm of a Boss Multi Fx Pedal
@@gianlucamarchesesp 303 vinyl sim
If I ever wanted a VST review it would be VulfComp. Everyone's raving about it but I feel I don't know enough to really understand why@@JorbLovesGear
For the authentic nostalgia experience, make sure you monitor with unpowered pc bundled speakers.
So sick. Glad to have a Jorb demo of this!
😅🙏 Me too
The 106 has such a great baseline tone for testing pedals.
very interesting! you're really getting some nice sounds out of this pedal! The more I listen to this, the more the sounds you get are scratching my brain nicely :D
itchybrain.
Digitalis by Aberrant DSP also does this effect but in VST format and is a way cheaper alternative for those who want to give their wallet a break.
I also find it to be a sorta anti-Lossy. It def provides more than just digital artefacting, and I think thats what makes it cool. The image-based spectral filter just makes it even more spectacular
Thanks for putting stuff out there ❤
Great job. You really made beautiful sounds.
🙏🙏
Oh my god they made one of my fav plugins into a pedal I need this in my life
I gotta guess we're about the same age and you pretty much described all the feelings I got when I downloaded lossy a few years ago..and got the same feelings all over again this morning at work when I saw the announcement and shortly thereafter made the purchase. Great demo and run through...Juno 106 a GREAT choice for the demo!!
🙏🙏🙏🫡
you know, i wondered when we might see interest in digital lofi. now we're just waiting for the granular bass boosted distortion.
lol props for starting with Floral Shop
I wish I hadn't watched this. I love glitchy, lofi nonsense. A lot of these effects remind me of the Data Bender from Qu-Bit, which I love. I picked up an Akai S900 recently as well to really crunch things up... but this could well be next.
This one will go very nicely next to my Gen Loss 2. I am particularly intrigued by the feedback type of sound around 21:30, the combination of the freeze and resonant filter looks like it will yield some endless tweaking.
I want that Retro Oscilloscope….dope af. Vaporwave might be the direction I was already heading with music, I just didn’t have a name or classification for it. Basically heavy use of retro synths, lots of effects (especially reverb) And using Sampling as an artform. Oh yes an also lots of customised Arps/sequences. Only difference is I like more intelligently programmed drum sequences as opposed to some of the more ‘basic’ chillwave patterns. I’m soon about to aquire an S900 and also a TR-09, can’t wait to sample the TR-09 and ESQ-1 into the S900 for some retro warmth and ‘body’ to the sample which you’d be hard pressed to get by using plug-ins inside a DAW. I’ma look up this FX Pedal too…
Gen loss mk2 and lossy is the combo. Great video.
The water analogy is funny and also very intriguing
I cut it out at first but changed my mind 😅
Thanks for the stereo I/O guys! Mandatory these days.
TRUUE
I might buy this
This is such a dope translation , like a unicorn with flemmy chesty cough in a pedal 👾 then the engineering / programming of Chase Bliss fusion with digital bits is bonkers 🤪
Wait when the hell did they put Lossy in a pedal?! I've had the plugin for many years, I love a lot of the more extreme sounds it can do, the digital raindrops type stuff. I'll use a few different flavours of Lossy instances in chains in Ableton and get a whole soundscape out of them. People have been asking for a Vulf Comp pedal for years, to get that 303/404 comp without having to use one of those samplers on their pedal board. Hopefully that'll be next!
It just came out today, you didnt miss it 😅😅
Man, this seems like the perfect yin to the Gen Loss's yang. Thought I had all the lo-fi tools I needed, but may be demoting something from the pedalboard for this. 😬
Hey Bloom_Music good to see you hear. I remembered your video about programming the JX-03 from a while back… you inspired me to make some cool patches from that video! I wonder If you will do similar for any of the other Boutiques from Roland. Also, your music is really cool too.
@@Wil_Dsense Thanks! I've done a couple more boutique videos since then if you want to check them out. If you'd like to see other synths covered, please reach out to me on my channel so we don't jack Jorb's chat! ✌
I thought you said Lawsuit. That'd be a great pedal name for JHS.
I forgot you had a D-50 until I saw it in the background at the beginning. Hope we get to see more of you playing that in future videos.
Also, this effects pedal sounds cool as heck!
It was under my opening monologue, early digital seemed like the move.
It'll get it's own video eventually!
Yay!~ So hype to see a new chase bliss pedal!
Out of curiosity, what do you prefer more? The Gen Loss MK II or Lossy?
They're both all about signal degradation, but go bout it in very different ways
Realistically if I just want texture, the terminology & what controls are on the panel will lead me to gen loss.
But when I want to sound like a video embedded on ebaums world, only lossy will do
Ohhh, that's a great way of putting it. Thanks Jorb! @@JorbLovesGear
@@JorbLovesGear Ok, sub-question, Gen Loss or Ribbons?
beautiful!
🙏🙏🫡🫡
I’m so happpy with the Gen Loss mk2, this seems chase bliss is pushing it a bit? Funny that we’ve reached “perfection” and now there is gear to break it down again, 450€ in the EU is kinda bold if you ask me 🤑
Reminds me of the syntax error 2
Hey Jorb, I’m back.
Lossy Plug-in $50
Lossy Pedal $400
Hard to justify x8 the price for the same effect.
For a lot of people, I totally agree
yeah, especially since theres no "analog magic".. its just a DSP in a pedal box.. I mean for those dawless folk it might be great.. but for me I love running audio from my audio interface, out to my analog pedals and back into my daw for a little magic.. It's the analog part that makes the whole processing of pedals for me worthwhile. so i like running out to saturation pedals and analog delay pedals particularly , digital based pedals just achieve what i can do in my daw.
but yes, this might be handy for the dawless folk.
.
only useful to play live shows
$400 I'm out.
Hello! Great vid again Jorb! For anyone wanting the Lossy, but being a bit tight on cash, I would highly recommend the plugin called 'Digitalis' by Aberrant DSP.
24 bucks, great lossy early internet vibes!
Damn it’s like you stacked a lofi FM-synthesis holographic layer on top of an analog duvet of warmth .
I come for the “hello my name is Jorb”
And stayed for the??
the loss knob is adding aliasing
The new EHX attack decay also does this sound somehow. albeit you can't obtain it without the swells, but its poly mode tracks semi poorly and produces those terrible digital artifacts and it was always super interesting to me. Super cool to see a pedal dedicated to that sound.
Wish you'd thrown in a bit of a vocal demo-- doesn't seem like any review has so far. Specifically im curious if the packet effects track well with plain voice or not.
In any case really enjoyed the review! Something something Brian Eno quote about imperfections in mediums.
your totally right I even mentioned it in the video dammit
@@JorbLovesGear i know, what a tease!
Yeah, this seems great for vocal things
Oh no, that's gonna cost me. 😱
jorb fix tiiiime, if you see this, where did you get the pads on those M50's? They don't look stock and i'd love to get a set!
I have 2 sets from I think they're called brainwavz
@@JorbLovesGear thank you!
Just missing the Real Au--buffering--buffering--dio 🤣
This is neat, I wish more plugin developers would find a way to release physical effects like this.
Lossy has a special place in my heart, it's definitely the first widely known "bad internet" effect if not the actual first, but IMO Aberrant DSP's Digitalis blows it away. It's almost an apples to oranges comparison though because Digitalis has so much more going on.
Thanks for the shoutout. That cat is so cute! I may or may not have just downloaded the demo.
Does it have line level inputs?
Yup! Stereo in and out
Nice use of Lisa Frank 420 in the opening.
I can see the use case for this. But is vaporwave still being made in 2023?
Oh you have no idea =]
Yes, but it’s more post-vaporwave these days. There were only so many cheesy 80’s R&B songs that could be slowed down, chopped up, and run through a low pass filter before it got stale, so now it’s more original compositions with the vaporwave sound/aesthetic/composition approach.
Oh man it took less than 3 minutes for me to want it like so bad! Can't afford this price though.
Plugin is on sale right now!
Did you skip the entire Reverb part on purpose?
I dunno, I feel like the Generation Loss Mkii has more of a ‘mood spectrum’ to it, and having straddled the VHS and the shitty mp3 eras, the GL is pushing my nostalgia buttons more and seems more usable overall
(IMHO) This one seems to be mostly better with guitar and other instruments. Maybe it was the preset on the synth.
Really? I haven't really liked any of the Lossy demo's paired with guitar. I played around with the plugin last night and it sounds really good on synths and drums. Guitar, not so great to my ears.
Chase bliss make great pedals but $399 for a pedal is hilarious, when we all run back to Boss pedals in a few years and let's hope they forgive us
well when i save up the 400 it will be coming home
Jorb why do you want to return to old VHS? Having gone through every media since the 60’s i never understood why you miss the wobbly sound.
I think it's the sound of childhood & the lost positivity & hope of the 80s/90s
This isn't VHS though, that is analog media. This is purely digital artifacts taken to the extreme.
I love this kinda stuff. But I know more than a few old synth guys my age (56) here on the UA-cams who are like “Grumble grumble, bah hum bug. Why would you degrade the sound of your tracks?!? Don’t you want it pristine and mixed and mastered within a micronometer of its enjoyability??!! Bah hum bug I’m a “composer”(waves fist) the record company blah blah blech!!” But did I mention I love this kinda stuff? Well I do. But for $400!!! I think I’ll stick with my free Tape MELLO-FI from Arturia.
The original plug in is on sale right now, it is a pretty steep premium for hardware
Oh god, Millenial Tape Mod
oh my god it is
Vaporwave not so much as someone whose been making it since 2014. But for sure a good tool to add texture. 😊
Like getting a prison tat for your instrument. Does the crisis of authenticity demands everything be f’ed up?
If you're not literally going back in time to leave your recordings on used tape in a damp shed only to be recovered now, 40 years later, you're not doing it right.
Or, you know, you just just buy a pedal. Whatever.
😭😭😭
I think this pedal sounds awful, but horses for courses...
too much talking
Watch it on mute damn
Uhhh hopefully they go back to making mood mkii/blooper/thermae pedals. Im done with audio degradation. I have so many plugins and pedals doing this now.
i mean, mood mk2 and reverse mode C came out since gen loss, they didnt like pivot to only degradation processing
.
@@JorbLovesGear i didnt say they pivoted i just said i hope they do because im audio degraded out with all the gear i have for thst purpose. mood mkii was a remake of original into stereo so not a new invention and reverse c is just a remake of an already made algorithm. Not arguing wit ya just saying. To each their own buddy.
