- In this video, I share my round 3 chess game against GM Baadur Jobava from the 2022 Abu Dhabi Masters Tournament. The game featured the Lion Variation of the Philidor Defense and an insane checkmating sequence.

The way Eric describes his opponents ideas as “really cool” and the way he smiles throughout the entire video really shows how much he enjoys just playing chess no matter the result. He’s just such a wholesome guy.
Couldn't be me,but then again I haven't played chess long enough to not care when i lose
if i lose im cool with it but my bank account and rating points really dont like it
@@fnbehrad3474 why would your bank account not like it?
@@AntiquatedApe I think you need to be a special kind of chill like Eric for that.
@@randomname9291 Various costs associated with playing in a tournament.
I wouldn't be able to resist playing the Jobava London against Jobava, that would just make me feel so cool
_Blunder: Checkmate is unavoidable_
It's like playing Stafford against Eric.
Suicide Mission!
lol imagine inventing an opening, and being stuck playing that same opening cuz everyone thought it would be funny
@@Hasan... after all, as everyone knows, Eric’s middle name is Stafford.
Jobava would feel cool too, seeing an opening on his board and knowing it's named after him
Jobava was in the 2700 super GM club at some point and he's a complete madman on the board. This game was awesome to watch, I bet it was an honor for both of you to have the chance of playing the other x)
shocking he lost to Irene!
@@whoisbhauji not at all. Her TPR is currently 2600+. F.E., She draw Wang hao
@@FIFA1999PC She is an IM and he is a strong GM, former Super GM; gap is bigger than you think. And you used a DRAW to prove your point which means it's really weak. Be real, it is a shock. Which only gives her more merit :)
I really enjoyed this game… when it seemed Jobava was playing safe, he turned things around. And your humble and calm always make you evolve, Eric, and i learn a lot with your videos. Im wishing you luck in the competition! Thank you for posting
That's one of the most bananas combinations I've ever seen, I couldn't find the rook sac and he saw it before he even moved the knight.
*Two* empty square sacs!! He must have thought - The black squares are too weak and found a way!
Dam that knockout combo was vicious can tell it hurt you but stay strong Eric glad you trying to make content like this
That was an amazing mating line! I'm impressed by the way you approach the tournament--just trying to play good chess without focusing too much on the results. We can all learn something from that. Good luck in your next game!
this Jobava fellow is a very good chess player, I wonder if he’s familiar with the London.
I wonder has he played Jobava London specifically
Crazy coincidence that there's a GM named Jobava, and also an opening named Jobava London!
@@DarkSideChess his parents loved this opening so much that they named their son after it
Not funny
@@alon3304 about 74 people (as of writing) found this funny
Ahh in the "pause here to find the move" position I thought Qg3 immediately, but Re1+ first is brilliant to disconnect the rooks and prevent sacrificing one for the bishop. Very instructive!
a great example of the "when you see a good move, look for a better one"
This is the birth of the puzzle.
I very much admire your sportsmanship. This is a trade that is not embraced and shared enough in competition. Also really enjoy your post game analysis. Thank you for sharing.
Genius Jobava may be but Eric you are a treasure. Well done in the review/explanation.
The value of this teaching is high. YES Eric took his Queen out of play by considering the attack employing a grim gal.
I have developed a new chess tool here today called "Bava brain and the scooch."
Twice Jobava employed the scooch method of removing the opponent's pawn obstacles.
Making the pawn take his piece and vacate the rank needed for the attack.
I do not think like that, or perhaps I did not in the past, however ?
Jobava saw that he wanted the bishop to corner the King and needed the rook to be on the same diagonal of his Queen once the fan was hit. Knowing Eric's defense required using his d rook to block on h3. Jobava knew the e rook would be flopping in the wind cold and vulnerable... harvesting helpless hanging Castles can be emotionally rewarding.
Jobava created a symphony in this game, all in his dynamic brain while Eric watched on amazed and drooling.
I want to play it out later, but at 4:37 I would love to see the calculation of Nxe4 at that moment since black's Queen is tied down to defending the pawn. Knight would still have access to the g6 square.
Eric I’m so proud of the way that you play chess, I take so much inspiration from your play style
9:43 i felt like he is litterly talking to me personally lol
(Btw thanks for the photo u gave me after the game Eric ur even more wholesome in real life):
FYI - Simon Williams (aka the GingerGM) has a series of videos and a Chessable course on the "Black Lion".
Playing a guy who has an opening named after him is pretty cool.
Eric, you are such a good man. I hope you find a way to revolutionize your thinking. Looks like jobava has spent his time working endgame puzzles.
The rook sac is so cool At that moment you may as well resign without even doing the calculations as it's clear your opponent sees the win. GG
Thanks for the followups, it's really cool that you're able to do this.
Beautiful tactic. It is also great to see someone who is clearly competitive and cares about winning, but respects his opponents and enjoys the game too much to get salty or bitter about a bad result. If you're hiding extreme inner turmoil under that even keeled demeanor, you are an excellent actor as well as a genial and mature individual
Wow. What a spectacular finish... and all during the final sequence white's queen is just chilling waaaay off to the side.
We can clearly see the difference of Levy vs Eric in losing games. The former is too salty to lose while the latter acknowledges mistakes and congratulates the better player
I feel your pain, but I can't help admiring Jobava's ruthlessness.
Oh, that was painful... you can't snooze against the best! Here, here, Eric! Don't beat yourself down, you'll get 'em next time. we're rooting for ya. cheers.
joe London got bava'd
Enjoying following your games and the recaps! Good luck!
That was unbelievable finish
This recap felt like deja vu with the computer complaining about you giving up the bishop pair too early.
WOW. What a game by Jobava. I would not feel bad losing in this way to a player like him. Congrats on win in your 2nd round. This tournament is not easy considering how many 2600+ young indian talents are playing.
3:01 Qb1
when an IM plays it: Wow, such a cool idea!
when I play it: *WTF*
Always fun to play in a brilliancy prize game, even though you were on the wrong side
Every jobava london that eric has played and used to crush and to instruct has culminated to this very matchup
Hi Eric, why did you not take BxF7 after Be7? I think you can get a very good compensation from the sacrifice, Rook-2 pawns-opponents center pawn...
Unbelievable that he found this OTB. What a beast.
At 4:31 wondering what you think of Nxe5 Qxe5 Bf7+ Kh8 bxe8 Qxe8?
4:33 could Kxe5 be played to add another attacker on the f7 pawn? Queen is tied down to it so cant take the knight, so you would have been up material? correct me if I am wrong.
if queen takes knight on e5 than Bxf7 forking king and rook, getting a rook in exchange of pawn and knight, still up material
At 4:20 why couldn't you have played Nxe5? After queen takes, Bxf7+ and you're up 2 pawns and a rook for two minor pieces no? I could be missing something as it's the middle of the night here...
love the concept of using strategys of online blitz on 90min games
I thought u were saying Jobaba london lol
That was really brilliant play by Jobava.
10:54 "Careless Blunder" -- sequel to Careless Whisper?
Jobava will have his name permanently remembered long after we are all gone
historical game !! EPIC
He is in another level
Tough game! Better luck next round Eric.
You're still a legend.
I'm only 1100 rated player right now. It was so hard for me to realize all of this. GM's are incredible crazy.
Seems like Eric is trying to play how he does online: not playing critical positions or sticking to best principles (like keeping the bishop pair - also gave it up vs Predke) but instead going for interesting sidelines and trying slightly dubious but tricky ideas in the midgame. Unfortunately that's going to get you crushed when playing a super GM in classical OTB...
what does the rook sac achieve?
that photo is really nice, you should take up photography!!
its a selfie...
@@Fliiy is a joke... Eric has photography as a hobby
4:19 after Qe7 why doesn't Nxe5 work?
Sad I didn’t get to see a nice Jobava game, but I did see the real Jobava play a fun game!
Wow, nice tactical win for black there... nearly impossible to see it coming.
Really instructive. Once he countered your threat with the q and bishop then your queen was just out of position. Interesting.
Top masters: mate comes out of nowhere
Nice game man
I’d be honored to be bested like that
Wow! What a finish! 😳
That's nasty. Good game
Here when the title said Jobava is insane
Never heard such facts out of rosens mouth
4:31 why not Nxe5?
4:35 is it possible to take the pawn on e5?
Great game Eric.. I woulda loved to see the Jobava against him but yea ur right about it prolly being a horrible idea. Haha. Congrats tho, you did great.
So is it already forced mate after hxg4?
Georgian exotic king of chess
After watching this game I think that the dude playing black should try the Jobava London, he might like it
Unfortunate that the dark squares became so weak some time later after trading the dark square bishop
Jobava is a cool person, that's a well-known fact.
That was such a nice rook sac
You should value ze two beeshops! Vat else?
Crushed.
That's why Ginger loves him, isn't it?
When I saw the ending of this game I thought you would go "My Queen is sad all by herself in the corner".
Next game you'll show them!
Pretty nice to watch you trying to diviate from theory making non standard moves, it didnt work pretty well this time but i hope it doesnt affect your effort to win the games. Good job and keep going :)
9:26 Wasn't Rook h3 a mate in 1 ?
Wow so brutal
Had Eric moved Queen d2, it would probably have led to a win. Eric tends to outsmart himself against stronger opponents.
9:46 i was one of these people lol
It must have made you stronger somehow.... Good luck in the next round!
I'm a Rosen fan, and I'm a Jobava fan!
Brutal but you still genius in my book
knight g4 is a genius move dude...!!
Can someone post the pgn for this game?
sick
This title hasn't aged well.
jobava is monster :D
Today lesson: never think you have advantage no matter what
Baaadurr 🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪
While it is embarrassing getting blown off the board, at least it makes good UA-cam content.
Also, 12:27
I was so ready to comment “as if you didn’t play the Jovaba London” but it was legit the first thing you said 🫠
First Predke, now Jobava .....not an easy schedule for sure
I tuned in and you were +9 and you were thinking then i started calculating and i realized nooooo!
Hi. 🙂
Engrossed and then you get a mid roll and totally spoils it
Unlucky Eric! Maybe too much Ben Finegold made you play "Knife F5!" :D
Didn't Jobava rage HARD after losing to a girl in a TT? Wonder how he was after his Sukandar game
I wonder did Andrea ever met him ? 😀
