Had to take a long 30 hour road trip. 14 hours in my lady took over the driving for a spell. Never heard this song before. She had it playing as i tried to sleep while she drove. Now it is permantly embedded in my soul. Pure bliss.
"The secret's in the cheese", lol. What a brilliant song. Awesone arrangement, cool licks, Mark's resonant voice.... all beautifully guild a gorgeous, merciless satire. Love this band.
The lyricsare fantastic; I can picture this country club king with a tumbler in his hand and an oily smile on his face, oozing around the crowd and showing off his pad. "S'cuse me while I mingle - 'Hi, how are you?'"
Has Mark ever said what his real life inspiration for this song actually was? Was it someone he knew, or maybe a dig at rich people, or hippies or suchlike.
I liked this song since the first time I heard it about 1998, and just now I found out it was Jeff in the drums, I don´t know how I didn't noticed it... It makes absolutely sense!!!
Dear friends, I would like to recommend some more songs from this album with Jeff Porcaro on drums: "When it comes to You", "You and your Friends" and "Calling Elvis". No shuffle-grooves, but amazing examples of Jeff's feel and groove. Jeff was a true master.
This is one of my favourite DS.. What they call SWAG these days (or.. is it something else already by now) it has this casual and coolness about it that makes me feel so welcome, relaxed and chilled out. I can almost believe the whole scene happening right here in front of me... As i listen 😄 the backyard, weathervane, food, brass, doorbell and all.. Everytime i listen and Mark Knopfler mingling around with his drink, bling and cigarette.. 😎
It is underrated and I think it's because it had the bad luck of being in the shadow of Brothers In Arms. It was always going to be in an uphill battle to equal it and never would which is a pity because there were some great songs on it.

Couldn't agree more. They've left a us with some of best songs ever to be made by mortal man. Nothing shall touch the greatness that these lads have accomplished.
I only discovered this song by accident about 4 or 5 years ago, but I'm glad I did. A nice departure from the gritty Dire Straits sound of earlier years.

Why do all best songs never make it to FM or Sirius? They play the weakest tracks, I’m going back 50 years, they wear us out with hooks but you have to buy the album to find the gems. So, why not now bring to gold out?
when this album came out i really didnt like it much, i was disappointed. i loved/love Brothers In Arms and Making Movies so much, it just didnt have the same epicness Brothers had. when my local rock stations started playing Heavy Fuel i was just underwhelmed and let down. it took years for the album to grow on me and now i think it is another classic album though subtle, i still dont really like Heavy Fuel that much though and dont know why that was the lead single. of course Money For Nothing is also by far my least favorite track on Brother In Arms.

What a great song about a home party..no politics..no religion..no world conflicts...just a casual evening and total relaxation...just how I love it..
This song is criticizing the rich upper class who spend a bunch of money on parties, without caring about what goes on around the world.
