for as much as I am adept at playing, when it comes to this computer type stuff, I am woefully challenged, but you made it as clear as could be, and I just successfully updated the Fantom to 3.01.......thanks as always, Ed!!!
How did you do it? I repeated the process with two different jump drives and it won’t work for nothing. Any advice?
@@2bSolo certain key elements: 1. make sure the thumb drive is formatted on the Fantom first 2. make sure the download file is properly unzipped. 3. most critical of all: make sure you transfer all three of the unzipped files to the drive 4. make sure the thumb drive is inserted into the USB socket first! 5. make sure you press down and hold the Write button when you turn the Fantom on with the drive inserted into the USB 6. After doing the initial load the screen actually prompts you to take out the Thumb drive and re-insert it into one of the 3 external sockets 7. Then, after the prompt says it is over, once again re-start the Fantom.........I have summarized the steps, and believe me, it is VERY easy to skip or miss any one of them.....Also , one other tip: certain thumb drives have to be pulled out an extra notch until you actually hear/feel it "click" so that it is fully open...I have fallen a victim to this several times. Hope all this helps!!!!!!!!!

It would be nice in the future for Roland to team up with a professional musician to really demonstrate the power of the Fantom. DKS Synth Lab is one existing example. Would you consider getting in touch with Dom Sigalas? He's done great and extremely professional videos and I think that Roland would greatly benefit from someone like him.

Excellent instructions, but I had a mishap (my fault).
The power button was accidentally hit while doing the 2nd part of the update (don't ask), resulting in the Fantom not powering down afterwards even though the power button was off. I unplugged/replugged it back in, then redid the update from the beginning, and am happy to report that all is well. Whew!
I would have tried "factory reset" if that didn't work.

Ok the Fantom 6 and the Fantom 06 have different system updates. The 6 has 3.01 but the 06 has a system update of 1.02. Didn't know that
OMG! I was starting to update to 3,01 with a San Disk Thumb Drive for 2 hrs. ... brought out my NEW LEXAR Thumb Drive ( Formmated It! ) AND NOW I was ABLE to to Update to 3.01 ( i'm sharing a Switched Receptacle)
that's the same Power ( all my Studio Hardware runs through a FURMAN POWER CONDITIONER. Still wondering why the happened?
Hey quick question I notice on my Fantom that some scenes have usb midi out and some don’t why is that. Is that how suppose to work or is that an error? For eg. When the fantom just turn, on the first scene it doesn’t send midi via usb but the scenes with patterns or songs sends out midi via usb to my DAW
Updated Ed ;).Thank you and continue to support especially, recording automation ( rec should be record all the knob movements such as cut off or resonance) it can be on mc-707. Because for long bars such as 16 bar. It is too difficult to draw effects with touchscreen. I expect copy entire row & at least 16 row improvement on sequencer. These are in mc-707 why we are waiting so much for fantom ? ☺️. Please Roland please :)
You can record automation. Not from the high resolution cutoff and resonace knobs though. The sequencer is midi based (128 steps), while the zen-core engine has 10 bit resolution (1024 steps). So the sequencer cannot record from that. What you can do is select Assign 1/2 from the zone control panel, and assign a knob or slider to cutoff and other parameters. Those knobs and sliders are midi resolution so once the parameters are assigned, you can record the automation from them.
@@ablesam Thank you for the detailed information. But how it is possible on mc-707 ? I can record knob movements (cut off , etc) when i press automation buttton, sequencer records very well. Thank you for the alternative solution but it would be very difficult to set cut off etc with s1, s2 knobs :(
@ That's because the knobs are sending Midi CC data. You will notice they are not as smooth when turning the filter of a sound in comparison to FANTOM's dedicated cutoff potentiometer.

My instrument's memory USB isn't recognizing the thumb drive. It does see the thumb in ext but there is no file. Any thoughts ?

Hi ! Congratulations for the post! I followed the steps to install the expansions on my Fantom-0, but I'm getting the following error message: "Incorrect file!".
I have my equipment registered on Roland's website, this could be a problem in generating the expansion files, from what I've heard. However, I don't think this is the problem. Please could you help me? Thank you !

Hi Ed . I just got my fantom 6 and try to update 3.01 today. But the update keep running didn't moved forward just stay there i tried very things very careful but still no luck. I already changed 3 USB drive.. I checked the currently on the new famtom version just 1.0 wow been long time ahh.. Maybe have to return to guitar center today feel bad....
I formatted the usb, Turned off the power held down write then turned power on and I do not get the "Preparing to update" page. I just get the insert usb page. But I get the usb insert page even if I don't insert a usb. Wonder what I did wrong

how do i delete the backing tracks off the pad i deleted 16 mp3 track and it saying internal memory is full please need help

I did exactly same thing as the video said, but still problems found me. the update stopped at board2 (time is 7:33 in video) and nothing happened for next 30mins. I got nothing to do but reboot to check what's going on, finding out screen says "programs version error."
It didn’t work for me, fantom 8 still at first set of drivers 1.0.
I'm trying to update my Fantom from 1.0 but it's not seeing the thumb drive. I just bought the keyboard a month ago. it's the 06 is there a different way to update. It keeps saying insert usb drive when the usb drive is inserted. Can you help
I'm having this exact same problem. I've looked through the forums and have found no answers that work. There is no "preparing to update" it goes straight to the screen and endlessly waits for a thumb drive that it can't read.

This didn't work for me, the piano doesn't seem to be reading the thumb drive, and yes I did all the other steps, but when I press write and then the power button, it takes me to a section that says insert your USB drive board 1 and board 2

I have done all the steps, tried two (if not three) different perfectly fine thumb drives.
Still, the same spinning forward slash followed by the non-flashing text cursor

You need a USB 2.0 drive and format it in the Fantom. When put into a PC, it should have the name "FANTOM" in all caps and be formatted as FAT32. The Fantom will recognize and pretend to format some USB 3.0 drives larger than 32GB that are exFAT, but I think this is actually a silent failure. In any case, any USB 3.0 drive is going to give you the endless prompt for Board 1. When the process works, it goes almost immediately to the updating text with the [=====> progress bar.
Done this on the Fantom 0 but it will not restart. The only thing is see is Fantom 06 07 07.
Can I use this in my Fantom X6? Or is this a Separate Keyboard?
X6 is a older keyboard this is the new fantom
I've followed the instructions EXACTLY. . when i turn on my FANTOM 06 and hold write i do not get promped for an update. . . it just stays at Insert memory to usb port 1. . .

You might have downloaded the wrong update. There are different updates for Fantom-6 and Fantom-06. At least that was the problem in my case. Hope it helps

upon second stage of updating it gave an error message. Board 2 Error !!! (1). Any idea what could cause it?
Probably you removed the thumb drive too soon from the USB port. Make sure the 1st process has ended before removing the thumb drive.
@@ricardojsgw thanks for feedback. I managed to fix the issue. For those who may have the same trouble, here is what I did. In the video it shows that the thumb drive with the backup files is used. I got another thumb drive. Cleaned it. Copied the update files there and started the operation from scratch. Basically, i switched off the Fantom; kept the Write button pressed with the thumbdrive in the memory slot. The rest was as per Ed’s video. 😀👍
@@MicLab_Music Shouldn't be a problem using the same drive with the backup files. Those are stored inside folders and shouldn't interfere with the update process. Maybe the problem was that the first drive's format was suitable for making backups but not for doing updates.
It fails for me on the second stage. It works for the first part of the update, but when it's time to switch the USB drive to the other USB port, it just doesn't do anything. I've tried with different drives, all formated in the Fantom. I'm on 2.11 and I don't know what else to do to make it work.
I'm also have Fantom 8 problem like you, don't know how you fixed it. Please give me advice, so grateful to you
@@HuyNguyen-md2zi I tried with different USB drives, and eventually one of them worked fine. Seems like not all devices are compatible with the upgrade process in the Fantom.

No, unfortunately it does not.
Wavetables must have 16 steps as the korg wavestation. 4 is very poor..
Which Fantom? 08 latest is 1.04 not 3 plus
Pro Tip: Reset your date and time BEFORE you take a backup! This way, when you're trying to figure out what backups are what, your timestamps are at least close to reality. Go into System, go all the way to the bottom, and put in the current date and time. Then don't forget to "Write" it, so that your backup will be properly timestamped!
And this is the biggest oversight for this keyboard. Why doesn't it just have a damned clock chip in it with a 2032 watch battery for keeping the clock going when the keyboard is not plugged in to AC power? For crying out loud, it's 2022 and this is really a computer, no matter what anybody says. It's high time it had a working date/timestamp clock inside. I still have to set date and time every time I want to save something with this keyboard. If I don't, then every single change, every export, every backup would be dated 2021-03-15 at 00:00! Bring it, Roland. You could even call it Roland Fantom: Tempus Fugit Edition, right?
Is the model expansion costs $149? No free download?
Yes, it costs $149. The reason being this model (n/zyme), the JD-800 and Vocal designer on the JP-X is the only way Roland can continue to support the development of new model banks. The first 4 were free, but if everything is free, no money can go into R&D for the Zen-Core engine. I wish the price were less ($75-$100).

@@XPJV The money Roland makes from selling this new model, goes into the development of newer ones. Projects Roland are still working on. If you feel that this 'n/zyme' is not worth your $149 dollars, then no need to buy it. The money people spent on FANTOM might not be enough to go into developing a new engine. So that's why Roland charges for these new ones. Hopefully they continue to improve the sequencer, sampler, synthesis technologies and other features in FANTOM with the next update. They improved the sequencer and added 3 new MFX with OS 3. N/zyme is just one highlight of this update. Useful to some, and useless to others. Enjoy!

@@XPJV True, that's why I wanted the price to be lowered to the $75-$99 range. Much more affordable but Roland still gets the money for R&D to improve Zen-Core.
