- Carrying on our experimenting with @The Army Painter new Speedpaint range we are building up to painting a very large, very cool miniature.
In this video I take a crack at the scenery it stands on, while testing out the new WHITE Speedpaint, the Speedpaint medium, how dry brushing looks on top of the Speedpaint and finally, how well they paints work on flat surfaces.

I'd wager that since the Speed Paints are meant to be put on a white primer, that Holy White color didn't pop right because it had no white to work with from the primer. Turned out fantastic, btw!
I think you hit the nail on the head! My bad! But yeah loved how it accidentally worked perfect for me :-D
That was my thought while watching it. It looks like the "white" paint is actually very light grey and is designed to pull away hard from edges giving virtually no tint to the white undercoat (which provides the actual edge highlights) and it then pools in the recesses to give a bit of contrast to the areas where the white undercoat is showing through (with a bit of a grade between high and low tones).
Really late on this comment, but for anyone who sees it, the lack of contrast on the Holy White paint is because of the grey colored primer. The speed paint pulls away from the raised edges, revealing the primer color. When that primer is white, it reveals white, and shades the recesses grey. With a grey primer, it reveals grey....and then shades the recesses grey.
I always dilute Holy White with medium, otherwise it's still grey, even with white primer.
Big fan of these experiments with Speedpaints. Can't wait to see more content like this
Got a set of these on pre-order. Can't wait for them to arrive!
Great videos!
I wonder if you need a really bright white primer under the "Holy White" to get that bright white edge highlight? The edges of the stonework after painting with Holy White don't look much different from the primer color.
Yes you do
Yeah speed painter says that you are supposed to prime with white not grey. So over white the holy white speed paint should leave the primer color on the high areas and then fade to grey in the recesses.
Probably the same as Apothecary white, even over corax white it doesn't really work.
I wonder how that will look over a zenithal prime then
Should be as simple as dry brushing or painting in your bright white highlight before you paint Holy White over it. Really no different than under highlighting a glaze layer, wash layer , ink layer contrast layer etc... Personally, I think it looked just right. Very light grey, with just a shade darker in the recesses, but still very noticeable contrast/shading as compared to painting that with a normal paint..
Thank you so much for making this video, love all these experiments you are doing, can't wait for my mega set to arrive..
If they work like contrast you should try doing either a warm, cold, or even neutral zenithal first. Since I switched to that love the results.
do you apply primer with airbrush or rattle cans?
@@elbitxo5945 Both, one or two guys I'll airbrush but a squad or more I use a can.
@@13Robzilla and do you get that spotty finish with the rattle cans? which colors do you use as base undercoat and zenithal? I don't really like how black undercoat with rattle can works with contrast for what I've seen (looks great with air brush, tho), it may be look OK on futuristic minis, but looks too gritty and dirty for fantasy. I was wondering if anyone tried to use the specific contrast wraithbone spray as zenithal and some other dark neutral/warm as base undercoat instead of black. I also wonder if rattle cans using fine diffuser help to avoid dotty transitions between light and shadows.
Hey Rob - Mike here - glad you're still watching! That's definitely on my to-do list - putting contrast paints and inks over various colors with an airbrush.
@@elbitxo5945 Since I switched to using artist spray cans I love the finish. Still cheaper than branded paint by at least half and so much better results.
Is it Teclis? Holy white probably didn't work as well because greyseer is already grey, still a cool effect though! Loving these speed paint videos, very informative!
Nope not Teclis! But you’re spot on with the grey seer. Realised that this morning! They probably recommend over Matt white for a reason! Good shout
It's Krondys, son of Dracothion.
Sand Golem is my favourite Speedpaint. It's so versatile, depending on how much Medium you add.
I love that colour too! Was using it just today and thinking the same
@@WatchItPaintIt I have a centaur model where I used it for her blonde hair, palomino horse coat and the sandy ground and it looks like three different paints. :)
Looking good Ben! Can’t wait to see the Dragon.
I 100% blame you for all the moaning you will hear during that video :-D
@@WatchItPaintIt 🤣🤣🤣 I can’t wait!
Looks great
Knew it was Karazai's base instantly... He's on my shelf
Yes indeed, that "Holy white" isn't a "white exactly. It looks more as a stone like color. I was expecting it to be white on the edges and greyer on recesses . Anyway the end result was really good. Honestly I would love to test them my self, cant wait 😁😁
Thanks for this! 👍👏
That piece of terrain is from the Karazai/Krondys kit
10 internet points to you sir! Well done
Genuinely enjoyed your content
Glad to hear man! Hope you keep enjoying it!
Liking this, though the tufts (roots?) look a bit like carrots. =D Don't paint hungry, they say... or is it shopping? Don't shop hungry? Either way, loving the final result. I wasn't going to get speed paints because I prefer the look of traditional layering techniques to these faster methods, but might have to think about them for terrain.
Haha. Yeah I should maybe dull them down a little! Wasn’t quite what I was going for but still interesting. Also, you made me hungry, thanks for that :-D
@@WatchItPaintIt Happy to do my part, mate! =D
Recently found your channel, great content! I'm very interested in speed paints, have you found a mixture you like for ork skin yet? Oh, I've bitten all kinds of cheeks... 😏
I have actually! 50-50 with gravelord grey is the kind of green I like! But I don’t want to admit that on camera :D way more fun hating on it :D thanks for your comment! Welcome to the channel
You used a light grey paint on a grey primer and expect it to become white? Try it on a white basecoat instead.
I mean, that’s how the white contrast paint works isn’t it!! But yep this explains it, I forgot they recommended a white primer! Ty
Love all the detailed SP videos.
Wouldn't call the white, white. But it'll make a great job in painting stone. (-: (Might be whiter with a white undercoat?)
I love how this turned out. I was wondering if you had any reactivation issues with the speed paints. I use them but I’ve been varnishing between layers. It would be nice to skip that if possible!
I have had the occasional issue. But I’m learning to just dodge the problem in various ways. Dry brushing seems to have less of a problem, very quick layering is okay. I’m careful what order I paint and how wet the paint is I apply on top of Speedpaints. I have to varnish something’s but I can mostly avoid it or use the reactivation to my advantage
Yes, I've bitten my cheek while painting....and it hurts! Damned be Slaanesh for that.
Haha :-D so random while we’re painting!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
hey ho and nerdy greetings!
I've been following your speedpaint videos all the time because I really want to get the paints when they come out here in Germany! *.*
since you seem to have all sorts of colors from army painter with you and like to experiment, i have a test suggestion for you (this is how i would like to paint my figures :P):
1st step: a zenithal undercoat with medium gray light gray and white
2nd step: exclusively speedpaints for painting (except the metal parts)
3. dip the painted figure in the quickshades (strong or darktone) again and remove the excess "dip" with a brush.
I'd be happy if you could do a test like this.
because in Germany the colors won't be available until the end of March and I can't test T.T. myself until then
cheers, fraenky
hey! for what you can see at Pete The Wargamer's latest video, Speedpaints tend to desaturate a lot when washed with quicksade or similar (he uses Agrax, but it will be the same with Strong Tone). Considering either contrast or speedpaints give a glossy finish, and quicksade even glossier, you will have to use some matt barnish, that will take a little bit of saturation as well. I'd look for an alternative, or not using quicksade at all, I mean, if your color scheme is good and make decent use of color theory, you shouldn't need that wash at all and you will end with brighter miniatures. Medium or dark gray undercoat + zenithal white should be enough also, most people use black + white zenithal anywats, I think you wouldn't notice any difference using two different grays and will end up taking detail from the miniature. Hope it helps!
@@elbitxo5945 hey!
Yes, that helped me a lot, thank you!
cheers and happy sunday!
fraenky 🙋♂️
Awesome, more Speedpaints video's!
I've bitten the inside of my cheek. It is especially annoying when you keep biting the same spot over and over again.
YES! THIS! I keep catching it ever since and it stings like mad :-D
Amazing result for such a quick job. There aren't much tests layering over the speedpaints yet, Is it true you have to barnish before applying regular paints to avoid reactivation? Doesn't look like you had that issue. I've seen it happening with red, IDK if it's a problem that specific color or the paints itself, but would be nice to have some tests regarding that issue before the mega set is released. Thanks for sharing these videos!
I've heard people say not to use your good brush with contrast paints. How did you find using the speed paints with the good red grass brush ?.:)
Not gonna lie, my RGG brushes are ruined and I bet it’s because of contrast. Having said that I still use them for almost EVERYTHING, like contrast or not (and I even have brand new sets but I keep using my wrecked ones…). I won’t say they give me perfect results? But maybe judge for yourself check out anything I’ve painted in the last year all this brushes! Also, I think they are the best brushes I’ve used for contrast paints so far too… I tried cheap ones, small ones, big ones, these just seem great for this job. I expect there’s cheaper great choices but I’m not gonna bother finding them!
Starter in february, mega set is coming out in march =)
You are correct! I thought I’d try and sneak that mistake past you all :-D
@@WatchItPaintIt hahaa =D
Have you checked out the Warcolours version of "contrast" paints?
I ordered them, I'm waiting for them to arrive. Hopefully they arrive OK, it was -4 degrees farenheight this morning dropping my son off at school.
They should be ok. I (Mike) live in Canada and I've had my paints in weather that cold. Their freezing point is pretty low. Neither Ben or I have tried the Warcolors version, but I've heard good things about them.
Hi 👋
Did you not have any problems with speedpaint reactivatin or bleeding in to other colours 🤔
Where do I find a cutting mat like that? Big, Black and Army painter branded with the logo.
I think they were just as a thank you for content creators a few years ago! Shame cos it’s one of the best hobby tools I have! Very handy and looks great on my desk. Sorry I can’t help more
From all the stuff I’ve watched on speed paint it’s intended to be used over a bright white primer not grey.
Yeah it is! But it appears a little grainy in the tests we did. So I like the contrast primers a little more. Evidentially white doesn’t work so well!
@@WatchItPaintIt that’s good to know. I’ll have to try it out over some grey seer myself. As soon as I can get my hands on them in Canada haha
I have cheeks ... im excited about speed paints
I wish I didn’t. Mine still bloody hurts :-D
Krondys, Son of Dracothion…. AKA, The cheek biter
Spot on! Keen eye! Can I ask why the cheek biter? :D
Not used the speedpaints yet, but what is the medium used for?
Thinning/lightening the colours. Have a look at the video where we show how it effects the Speedpaints -

@@WatchItPaintIt I will watch this. Thank you.
I've bitten my cheeks so many times, you don't even know.
I don't think ever while painting, tho.
That's what you get for not using the Games Workshop official cheek protector screen while painting. Rookie mistake, really.
10/10. Please comment again! A++
Is it the stormcast dragon? The name escapes me
It is! Even though I have it, I can’t remember it’s name! Definitely not why I made y’all tell it me :-D :-D
Krondys, Son of Dracothion
3:48 Harvey Dent: it's complicated...
That time I had a break down while recording :-D
@@WatchItPaintIt stay strong, I hope u are in a better place now 🙏. Jokes aside good on u for letting us peasants get an insight on the speedpaint line!
Are you experiencing the pint rehydrating during drybrush(I know it’s “dry” just wondering if you varnished it in between)
I didn’t varnish between, and I didn’t see any of that issue. But I’m sure it’s a real issue, just either I got lucky with the light application or dry brushing isn’t too bad? I think the rehydration is avoidable depending how you paint… for instance I’ve painted quite a few things now and didn’t even know this was a thing!!! But, others it will be a serious issue for :(
@@WatchItPaintIt I played with it today and seems like dry brushing I guess because no thinning is happening or because it’s well..dry lol doesn’t seem to do it for me either! Great video I’m enjoying playing with these
I just want to give army painter money, but everywhere is sold out for pre orders, it seems. Anywhere in US to get it?
how can you paint over without reactivating the speedpaint ?
I have no idea? I did it here no problem! They only reason I know about the reactivation issue is because others have said. When I made this video I didn’t have any issue… maybe I was just lucky with the dry brushing?
@@WatchItPaintIt yes Many channels are sayng That is Impossible to put normal Paint Over speedpaint without reactivating it
Any chance for a test over zenithal undercoat?
We did one!
Ah found it
may i ask, can i use this speedpaint for 6 inch action figures? thank you.
You can, though if you have an airbrush that's likely the best way to apply it. It works best over textured plastic surfaces, or ones with lots of nooks & crannies (fur, wood, guns, clothes with ripples/folds, etc). On flat surfaces, it can look splotchy, unless you spray it on with an airbrush.
@@WatchItPaintIt thank you so much
Lot of cheek in this vid ;)
Slightly less inside my mouth right now!
Its from the new Krondys model
its where hes standing
Nice!!! Keen eye
Your poor cheek
I don’t have cheeks :(
Its teclis
Saga of cheeks. What about buttcheeks? I didn't bite mine...
I don't have cheeks.
Using a grey prime? a grey speedpaint? why is it grey - who knows?
Hahaha :-D good point, well made
*uses a grey paint over a grey primer* I SURE WONDER WHY IT DIDNT TURN OUT WHITE! ò.ó
:-D
In my defence, I use the white contrast in the same way and the edges look white!
