  • Our search for Seldom Seen Slim takes us to Tonopah, Nevada where we uncover the birth of the town and seek out evidence of Slim in its early mining days. From the Tonopah Mining Park to the earliest residents in Tonopah Cemetery, we continue to ask "Has Anyone Seen Slim?"
We traveled the desert Southwest from Calico, California to Tonopah, Nevada where we sought out evidence of what life in the early mining days was like for early Tonopah settlers such as Seldom Seen Slim.
The silver-rich area was discovered in 1900 by Jim Butler and named Butler after him. Before the rush of more prospectors came, much of what the town would have looked like was a simple settlement of crude wood cabins and canvas tents that could be quickly constructed. While at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park we explored an example of what one of these looked like and what conveniences these early settlers would have had at their fingertips.
Butler leased out claims to other Tonopah area miners and these men became known as the Leasers. The Tonopah Historic Mining Park is a wealth of information about the start of Tonopah giving visitors a chance to explore the Mizpah Mine's headframe, hoist house and walk around peering into some of the deep stopes. These relics are some of the closest evidence of life in Tonpah's early days.
Within the Pioneer Cemetery, located next to the very unique World Famous Clown Motel, is the Old Tonopah Cemetery where some of the pioneers from Tonopah's past are buried, even as far back as 1901. Signage and a pamphlet located at the gate provide more details about life in the mining days. From victims and a hero of the Belmont Mine Fire to other tragic accidents and violence, one can really get a sense of life in Tonopah, Nevada.
After all that exploration one can stay at the historic Mizpah Hotel where the contrast from a boom town tent city to a thriving community can be felt. Tonopah's Mizpah Hotel features a bar, restaurant, historic elevator, and casino all in a rich and lavish Victorian style.

Never knew Slim was associated with Tonopah. Learn something new everyday. Great video.

Thank you very much! Glad that you're enjoying them! We have more to come in the series. They just take a while to edit because of that historical aspect. Lots of old photos to dig up and find! 😅

Great video. I moved to Tonopah recently, and you covered some high points really well. The real highlight of Tonopah is not the town itself, but rather, the expansive desert around it.

Well said! We love the desert up there and thank you so much for watching. 😊

Love this. I can't travel to the sites while visiting AZ for the first time. I'm covid vulnerable. This video made me feel like I "know" Tonopah. Thank you❣️

The tent looks better than some of those old wooden buildings. Tonopah looks amazing. Definitely want to check it out sometime (but I'll stay as far as possible from that clown motel).

It does. Which leads one to wonder about the age honestly. Either way, it's really cool to get to look inside as there's so many photographs of cities of those tents but few to none with any insight as to what life was like inside. Tonopah is amazing though. I have a feeling you'd love it. 😄

As you and I well know, living in Arizona in the 1800 would be a terror, truly. Not to mention zero air conditioning but just imagine living in a cloth tent like that wow. And that was the best accommodations and the most technologically advanced at the time 🤷‍♀️👀 Your search continues! 😊

I imagine some of the inmates in Phoenix could tell tales about tents during summer. 🤐 But yeah, life would have been pretty rough in some ways that we don't experience now. As for the search... keep an eye out. It might continue in a couple of hours today. 😉🤫

Thanks! I do have plans to go back to Tonopah and have another video I made there about a year ago in our back catalogue. Also, in a few weeks, maybe sooner, we’ll be releasing the next in that series focused on Goldfield, NV. I just need to finish editing it.

Interesting video! I am a ghost adventures fan so I remember that creepy clown motel and cemetery . That area where you could explore those deep ravines- interesting ( I already forgot what they were called!) I can’t imagine living a miners life! Tough!

What... no haunted clown ghosts? 🤣 I feel like almost every old mining town around here has an old hotel reported to be haunted. So far we've experienced nothing during our stays.

So I thought I heard that 10ft = 1 story, so 100ft would be a 10 story building. Regardless those were some deep shafts. That clown stuff is freaky…ever since I saw Tim Curry as Pennywise as a kid clowns just suck! 🤡🤡🤡🤡

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  2 роки тому +1

That sounds about right. Since the Mizpah is five stories, I guess that would be two Mizpah hotels. And yes, the clown motel always gives me a weird feeling.
