Love that truck set-up Austin - very practical. With the amount of rain we get here, almost every welder goes for an enclosed van - tools don't do good uncovered in our climate - but that truck set up is super cool IMO.
Certainly some great ideas, my truck is maxed out on weight. I have a welder, air compressor, oxy/acetylene set up, plasma cutter and many hand & air tools. I only carry my picker when I am going to need it. I mostly do mechanical work, but when people see a welder they always find stuff to be welded. I have rigged up several things that I can add or subtract as needed. I will be copying the set up you have for the saw. Thanks!
Its set ups like these that makes you more versatile and more dependable. I have a air compressor and paint gun with a small sandblaster along with my welding rig, gets me more work and i can charge the customer a bit more for a paint job on their fences or rails. Beats calling another guy to outsource the work and pay.

Thanks for all the helpful info and some motivational advice. I was doing wat you are doing, building gates, fences and livestock equipment for equipment here In my hometown. I hve developed some clientele but I haven't been welding for almost a month now due to the fact that my wife has been diagnosed with cancer and it really Hit me mentally and took the wind out of my sails. So watching your video and the words you use an how you use them it very inspiring to me to get me back under that pancake hood amd start welding again.
We are very sorry to hear about your wife. You and her are in our prayers. Thank you for sharing and for watching the videos. We are glad they are inspiring and motivating.
I like the mods you’ve done. Nice thing is that it won’t be hard to take it all off when you go back to the pipe line. Storage and function is the key to doing mobile welding. I keep my rig loaded down with a little bit of everything. Never know what you might need when you bounce around to multiple jobs every day. Keep up the good work and be safe!
A really slick move could be to make your next bed detachable (heavy bolts, heavy pins, even vertical sockets with pins or bolts so the fasteners never take the bed weight) and have fork lift pockets so you can pick it up. That also wins when you need to replace a fuel pump if you didn't make the bed with an access door over the pump or want that space for something else.
I had my portable welding business from 2007 to 2013. It seemed like my truck was getting cut apart and rebuild every 3 weeks when I got a break between jobs. I thought it was a blessing when I sold my portable equipment in 2013 but part of me wants to jump right back into it. I currently buy and sell crude oil and the money is good but it feels too much like a job anymore. Miss my old days of every days different
Love the new add-ons. Not only do you have me saying "That-a-way" this week repairing/ welding pontoon boats I'm now saying "COFFEEEEEE" in the mornings. Keep up the videos! 👍
Got a tip on picking a truck? Do mainly repair and maintenance work on docks and equipment. And I’m starting the journey of building a truck to get away from the trailer set up I currently have. Ideally would want something similar to IC weld but not quite that extravagant. Don’t have all the tooling he does. So I don’t need that big of a bed. Would like a crane or gin pole.
Hey Austin, good to see you have changing your work focus to survive the current work dynamic. I've also been doing my best to make ends meet since the economy has changed. I'm not a pipeline welder, but I am in a parallel industry. All the best, dude. Take care.
Get yourself a service bed and a used service truck crane imt or tiger or the like it will change your life and you won't have to move your truck to move stuff around and won't be down too long as you will just have to swap beds.
love this, i am new to structural welding from a long time of heavy/agricultural equipment. joined the union as per the companies request and have had a fair amount of down time. ive built a skid unit for my truck. made two 42x24" toolboxes and its almost fully assembled for side work. currently running a Lincoln ranger. i aspire to have your level of versatility and production!
@@alphadog6114 honestly it's a little slower paced than what I'm used to but the difference in the quality of work and insuring safety is definitely MUCH more of a priority to them. my union dues are minimal and so is the down time / stand by time.
Nice set up brother. But here in Canada everything you do, you have to think about winter. The jack stands you have for example, in the winter it won’t come out until you sledge hammer all the ice off of it. Then you have to worry about the MTO. They pull you over give you a warning first time then next time $1000 ticket.
Myself, i made a gin pole off my gooseneck hitch. So far i’v lifted 3000lb. I did have to block the axles though. For quick and dirty i’m going to fix one off the reciever as well.
Awesome going back to the pipeline👍 if you ever decide to build a new back bed. Please show us every step of how you build it. I’m in the process of making my own business for welding and seeing your videos are very helpful and full of ideas Thank you, God bless you
If you add a fuel pump access hatch above the fuel tank it makes the eventual fuel pump replacement (and troubleshooting) MUCH easier. If that's not convenient right now keep it in mind if you ever have to pull a fuel pump.
Looks awesome. A word of advice, you may want to secure your chop saw with a ratchet strap when it's in transit. I'm not sure if you fall under commercial DOT but they could grab you for an insecure load as most governing bodies don't recognize bungees as cargo securement. No idea what the laws are in your neck of the woods but as a truck driver I use ratchets for everything to save myself a possible headache. Thanks so much for what you do, you helped me realize it was time to ditch the truck and follow my dream of being a welder and fabricator. I finish school next month.
Love your videos of your current and more recent work life but looking forward to the pipeline videos we once saw. If it weren't for your more recent videos I probably wouldn't have done one of my current projects. Since its been so long off the pipeline you might have to review your pipeline jargon videos.
You almost need another truck one with a 12 foot bed for the extra stuff and fitted more for that line of work , and keep that truck you’re using currently, rigged out for pipeline on stand by cleaned and serviced up ready

I am planning on having two trucks rigged out at some point for different types of work. Although it probably isn't very practical for all you have going on, but I think if you keep that desire to pipeline again, you might rig out the old Ram as your local mobile welding rig and your black Ram as your pipeline rig?
