Don’t know what you all are talking about. I have owned Lexus SUV’s since 2000. They were fantastic. I had an order in for the new 24’ Lexus GX550. After looking at so many videos, I cancelled the order. They took all the luxury out of the thing and it looked like an everyday truck. Just bought a 24’ Genesis GV80. Absolutely love it. It has so much luxury and drives like a dream. I positively made the best move.
For all the people comparing Genesis to Lexus and Acura, here’s the thing to understand.
Genesis models do not share ANY COMPONENTS with their Hyundai counterparts. They are built on their own unique platforms with unique engines for the most part. Thus, they do not target the Japanese luxury cars.
Meanwhile, Lexus has no model except the flagship LS and flagship LC coupes (who nobody buys anyways) that are actually built from the ground up to be luxury models. So in essence, all their cars are just mainstream Toyotas dressed up in nicer clothing. Same applies to Acura.
I think knowing that, you have to set expectations for this car properly since the RX/TX/MDX aren’t really comparable to what Genesis is doing with this car, or their other cars.

@@KNRS927 it doesn’t matter who they are targeting when Genesis aren’t selling as well as Japanese, Americans, nor German luxury brands. They need their own brand identity in order to compete with these folks and the heritage and prestige of more established luxury competitors. Volkswagen/Bentley has not stamped Hyundai as a subsidiary of theirs, so the expensive “budget friendly” and unoriginal lineup from Genesis are nothing more than *wannabes.*
It’s a hard sale trying to convince Americans a gussied up Hyundai/Kia is as nice as a Korean Bentley Bentayga. Most Americans will just opt for the real thing from Bentley if that’s what they actually wanted.

To all the commenters saying Hyundai and Kia are junk, maybe the ones made in the USA are but the South Korean ones are very reliable.
This is from statistics. You know, facts.
Genesis is doing something right to get people talking, whether it's negative or positive. I always admire the Koreans for taking leaps with design and technology. Making their Japanese counterparts feel like their missing features for the money. If anything, the Koreans are pushing their Japanese rivals to be more competitive. I appreciate them for not making their models look all the same and no parts sharing between their mainstream and luxury models, unlike Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, and Honda/Acura.
I will head to the Genesis dealer once the GV80 gets a PHEV version with compatible range as the X5 and GLE PHEVs
Gotta wait a couple years for that
I heard that they are working on hybrids now, so probably by the end of this year or next, we will see their most popular G/GV cars getting hybrids.
I don’t get the Bentley reference other than Bentley being suggested in its styling. It doesn’t drive, perform, or feel like a Bentley. Its interior is nice but it isn’t Bentley grade in the least. This nonsense about Bentley caught on and it’s now one of these things people just repeat from a place of ignorance.
The reviewers only do this for views; Genesis never made their cars to compete with Bentley. So it's seriously annoying.
Through the 70s and 80s I heard people say a Chevy Caprice with leather was “just like a Cadillac.” The people saying this could not afford a Cadillac.
Except they really weren’t to far off .. same engine same chassis- maybe same leather- back in the VW Passat was a audivA4
@@reserva120 I think you need to check your facts and get back to me. Until the 90’s Fleetwood Brougham was released, a Caprice shared little with any Cadillac (except those dark times when you could get the same engine in both).

@@reserva120 Not really, considering most cars spend most of the lives at idle. Until travesties like the Fleetwood Brougham, Cadillac was a different experience than a Caprice. The FWD models were not just Bonnevilles with more chrome. Only small-time cornpone hustlers deliberately confused the two.
I do want it to corner carve. It’s so beautiful and I’d honestly let go of my msport bmw if I could get a go fast version of this that drove well cus I like the interior more than my bmw. But they won’t bring that fast version they are building for the uae , to North America

When that first Lexus grille came upon us… I figured the designer was inspired by the first generation Battlestar Galactic Cylinder Warrior helmet lower half.

The Bentley interior you speak of isn't as good as it used to be. The material quality while still high is not as high as it used to be. It is, after all, a tarted up Audi which is just a more expensive Volkswagen
Theres a huge difference between saying Bentley and Audi are fancy VWs vs saying the bentayga is just a gussied up VW Tiguan or atlas.
Notice Bentley and Audi don’t recycle fwd VW platforms in their more expensive models . That’s the big difference

The A4 is RWD biased so it doesn’t share anything with VW. The engines are oriented differently and they use RWD transmissions and the Quattro system in those models are rear biased so in normal conditions most of the power around 60% goes to the rear wheels

No not at 80k on a Hyundai … nope
The price and features are nice. But lets be real, 80k for that name doesn't equal LEXUS.
Is Lexus even that special or anything anymore? Their cars have started feeling really mainstream, cheap and not that special with the latest redesigns, especially for the RX, new TX, new GX, and new NX. The absence of the silky smooth V6 and V8 engines, wood trim in their cars, and those nice soft touch headliners all while replacing them with cheaper plastics just is a dealbreaker for me now. I think Genesis actually feels more luxurious and brings that special factor that Lexus lacks now, even if the Lexus will sell more because of name brand now.
I’m sorry but the modern Lexus vehicles are not nearly as impressive as they used to be.

@naveenthemachine Well said. There are more parts/platform similarities between Lexus and Toyota, or Honda and Acura, than Genesis and Hyundai/Kia. Where a Lexus NX for example may feel like a dressed up Rav4, a Genesis GV70 won't feel even remotely similar to a Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage.

Great review but all we heard is about the exterior and the interior, how about the engine the heart of the beast any idea what is the liability like on this thirsty SUV, if I'm gonna spend $80,000 I wanna know how long this gonna last. If you are in the market for a real SUV consider the BMW X5 xDrive 40i which will cost around 70k with 23/27 MPG.
But you’re not going to get nearly the same amount of features as the bmw. Comparably equipping the x5 to the gv80 would cost you significantly more

The 8 speed auto is made for smoothness not performance like the 10 speed auto in the MDX. The GV80 Coupe will do better with the e-superchaeger and slightly more sporter transmission, but its gear ratios will never be that aggressively low like the MDX. And truth be told, that 10 speed auto in the MDX is one of two saving grace outside of SH-AWD is the reason you buy it cause the engine is not it.
Good point. Another reason to not buy the Genesis and buy the MDX.
And who wants to go back to a Hyundai dealership for anything. And the 2:32 Acura will hold its value better while giving a better ownership experience

The designer of the Bentayga, is the same designer of the GV80: SangYup Lee, who is now the Chief designer for the Genesis brand. That’s maybe why they found some resemblance. I think Genesis designs are far better now that MB, BMW and Audi

MDX is more practical, better resale value, cheaper, nicer to drive, faster, and more reliable. This GV80 is just a hunk of uncompetitive car.
MDX is a three row, this is a two row. This compares with X5, GLE, Q8. MDX competes with q7(a stretch), qx60, RX, TX and cx90(a stretch). The Genesis still is more refined, offers much more, and it’s quicker. It’s been proven for the past 4 years that the gv80 is a great product. 5.3 secs to 60 vs 5.5 for the mdx type S, which isn’t much of a difference. The only reason I bought the mdx over the gv80 is because I needed the third row, wanted the massage, and air suspension at a slightly cheaper price…although it’s not as luxurious.
The GV80 is not targeting the MDX, or the RX for that matter. This has been explained numerous times.

Car and Driver ranks the GV80 #1 in this segment, while they rank the MDX #17. The Genesis is the better vehicle. Their test data also showed the GV80 to be faster, though if you're buying in this segment for outright speed you should be shopping Porsche and BMW.
