@@StaxReacts Even the name Rage Against the Machine evokes the band’s political stance, a pushback against socio-political injustices, and inequalities. This type of music is called rap-metal. It's a protest against the abuse of power. Released as the first single off Rage Against the Machine on Nov. 2, 1992, “Killing in the Name” was a rap-metal song of protest against the abuses of power. Initially, the lyrics-written by singer Zach de la Rocha, along with Morello, bassist Timothy Robert Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk- were inspired by the Rodney King beating by Los Angeles police in 1991, resulting in riots across the city in 1992 after the officers involved in King’s beating were acquitted. Those who died are justified, for wearing the badge, they’re the chosen whites You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they’re the chosen whites Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses, sings De la Rocha, linking the LAPD to the white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan, and continues in the song refrain You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they’re the chosen whites. Now 30 years after the release of “Killing in the Name,” the song continues to be as relevant as it was in 1992. Most recently, the song made a resurgence with the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd in 2020.
This song condemns white supremacy and police brutality. The lyrics were "Some of those who work (police) forces are the same who burn crosses" and "Those who died are justified by wearing a badge (police) they're the chosen whites." Most Rage songs are about injustice or oppression. "Know Your Enemy" next! As a black man, you need to hear that one.
I see someone mentioned Bulls on Parade, I definitely suggest that as well. You might also want to check out the lyric videos for the song, wake up, down rodeo, know and take the power back. I promise, you will be mind blown. Zack De La Rocha is an excellent MC and the band is unmatched in talent, especially the unique guitar styles of Tom Morello.
Rage isnt just a rock group they're heavily influenced by other types of genres including rap. Zack is one of the most important people to bridge it between hip hop and rock Tom Morello guitar can do basically scratch like a DJ. Plus they take on issues that a lot of band wont touch. Plus you got to pull up the lyrics for rage. The saying those that work forces are the same that burn crosses are the Police "force" akin to the KKK for cross burning. There's no demonic meaning to it. They're a band that speaks about real life issues in the community
"no samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this record" this was the statement printed on the back cover of all the CD liners, to let you know those crazy ass sounds are all Tom Morello on guitar, and nothing else. You want to be really amazed, check out "Bulls On Parade," where Tom's guitar solo sounds like he's a DJ scratching and mixing on the turntable. Wicked!!
Well, I had to check. That was on the "Rage Against The Machine" album, "Battle of Los Angeles" had "All sounds made by guitar, bass, drums and vocals". Evil Empire did not have any statement that I could see. Still... They were/are amazing group.
“Does this have the same effect on y’all?” @2:44 This song has never failed to have an effect on me. Ever. And that effect is multiplied and justified when I watch someone experience it for the first time.
Tom Morello on guitar, he is also a Harvard grad with his degree in Political Science. I saw them live for the 3rd time of my life last summer, I saw them back in the 90s and one show the Wu Tang Clan opened for them. RATM is one of my top 3 bands of my life time.
Thank You AND, you're welcome. All their songs RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE... that is: the government, corporate greed, police brutality, the rich elite, etc, etc... ALL their songs fight the machine. 4 members, formed in LA in 1991. They are the best rock/rap fusion of all time. You should watch live performances with lyrics pulled up on a phone. The lyrics are powerful, the vibe is intense and the riffs are tight (thanks Tom Morello). BULLS ON PARADE, DOWN RODEO, WAKE UP, PEOPLE OF THE SUN... all on the list. This song is great, but it is the most redundant and simplest song they have. The one's listed above have deeper content, but we here to help if you need it. Thanks again
Corporate greed that is laughable, considering over recent years ticket prices to to their shows has been in excess of $400 a ticket. Look at the areas that were affected by the actions that he was singing about. MLG had the Detroit riots, LA had the Rodney king and a few other areas, Minneapolis after George Floyd, the areas never recovered. Total shit holes. Sucks because I loved rage when they came out but after they prove themselves to be hypocritical to their message, and didn’t provide any type of positive inspiration
Key lyric to understanding this song...."some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses." This came out shortly after the Rodney King beating and racial tensions were high. A lot of us were questioning authority for the first time and this song was an anthem. You'll have to give Bombtrack by Rage a listen after this one
New to your channel, I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your Beasties reactions, and now you're headed down the RAtM rabbit hole. This group is amazing, anti-establishment and socially conscious. This song is more of a protest anthem after the Rodney King beating in '92. They regularly spit bars in most of their songs that really make you THINK. Tom Morello on guitar is a BEAST with his creative effects, too. "Bulls On Parade" is worth a listen - you'll hear Tom use his guitar and effects pedals to replicate a turntable in that one. Enjoy the journey with RAtM, it's worth it!
I may be 63 years “young”, RATM was introduced to me by my first “cougar” b/f. I was 34 and he was 27. I was hooked b/c I love Punk. This is a mash up of Punk/ Rap/and Rock. Look up “mosh pit” and “crowd surfing”…90’s concert (Rock) staples. I have a RATM hoodie. I love their message.
Lot hip hop fans love nu-metal, because its a fusion of punk, metal, and hip hop, rap vocal deliveries, etc. . lol. Nu Metal bands like Korn, Slipknot, Rage Against the Machine, Limp Bizkit, Drowning Pool, Systems of a Down, Incubus, etc. The WWE D Generation X, was done by Chris Warren Band. WWE tends to use a lot of nu metal/rap rock in their events and themes. lol. Musis subgenre was popular during the '90s and '00s. BTW, RATM is a very political group, you are right.
That's Tom Morello on guitar. He's a virtuoso who pioneered electric guitar for the 90s and 00s and still plays today. He's also a positive political activist (like this entire band) and this band later played behind Chris Cornell as Audioslave. Worth checking them out too.
The reason it’s such a bop is because of the swing beat. It’s not a straight 8ths beat, but it swings. Gives it a jazz/hip hop vibe even though it’s hard rock. Brilliant writing.
The energy of the protesting 90s was incredible in the concerts..A form of neopunk...There was a rage of awareness of the world around us with these injustices. In rap, rock, techno...Yes underground techno was very violent at one time...
The head bobbing in the rock world is called head banging. You're a natural. The burn crosses thing was a reference to some police being the same as the KKK. This was a written in response to the police beating Rodney King, which was caught on video from someone's balcony before everyone had cell phones to record everything. It was a big deal at the time, and the officers were acquitted in well publicized court trial, which led to major rioting. I lived in SF at the time and it wasn't just Rage Against The Machine raging. Looks like you just saw stage diving for the first time? Stage diving, crowd surfing, mosh pits and head banging are some of the fun of high energy rock concerts.
I love artists like RATM who don’t give AF & are prepared to put their careers on the line to remain true to themselves! I first heard this masterpiece when it came out in 1992 - I immediately went out and bought the 12" vinyl, and played it to death! Others in the comments have explained the song & the band's legendary status🤘 *FUNFACT* About 10 years ago in the UK, someone randomly started a campaign to get this to No.1 in the charts for xmas - AND IT WORKED! The BBC shat themselves as they had to transmit THIS into UK homes on crimbo day!🤣(even tho they only played about 20 secs!) Best protest song bar none - still love it! ✌
Stack , you gotta go down this rabbit hole with rage , they have a message . The guitar player is a Afro American “Tom”, does stuff with the guitar that will blow your f-ing mind !!👍🤗👌
That was Hip Hop. And this is merely an introduction to a completely anti establishment movement. With Rock instruments. You should listen to more from these guys. It gets deeper. Enjoy!
Rage Against the Machine evokes the band’s political stance, a pushback against socio-political injustices, and inequalities! This is about government!!
I like some rock, mostly classic rock and up til the 90s. I listen to a bit of everything. But RATM is in a class all their own. I'm new to your channel so I was super jazzed when I saw this. And yes I was banging my head with you. I get goosebumps everytime I hear this song. But when I watch the video it's so much more amazing. Glad you did the video. I wish you luck on your channel. You do an amazing job, and that's coming from a 48 yr old woman 😊
Man .. I feel almost priviledged to have been in my late teens/early 20's during the 90's. So much good music. RATM, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, Primus, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry... I think that I have forgotten more good artist/songs from the 90's that I have heard in the 2000'ds.. xD
Zack de la Rocha, the lead singer, is a rapper/poet. The rest of the amazing band are rockers. There's a reason for this band, as indicated in the name of the band. RAGE! Hell yeah🔥🔥🔥 was going to recommend you react to these guys and you already did🙌 “Fuck you…I won’t do what you tell me” became our middle-high school anthem when the teachers got on us😂 Hey side note the guitarists here T. Morrello & the guitarist from TOOL A. Jones grew up, went to school and played together before moving to LA✌️ Also these guys and Wu-Tang toured together and both say F the gov😂
Listen if you want to be absolutely Blown Away not only by the song but the lyrics and the song and it is a lyric video you need to check out their song called wake up
Not sure if anyone said it, but the original lyric was "Some of those that hold office are the same that burn crosses". Record execs made them change it.
Rage against the machine (gov institutions) says it all. This whole cd is fkn insane great. Must have in traffic, screaming fuck u I wont do what u tell me helps get it out. And everyone around you leaves u alone.
They were supposed to start their tour in 2020 in my city El Paso Tx. but covid hit and it was canceled, and they never came and now they are going to stop touring. I was ready to buy my tickets and it just didn't happen.
Time to go down the rabbit hole to the School of RATM. Your life will never be the same! Take the time to learn about everything they mention and you’ll learn more about history and politics in this country than you ever did in school. And Tom Morello’s son may pass him in the mad guitar skills, so you should check him out, too.
You asked about the band, after creative differences (Zack only wanting to do political songs), the band reformed with lead singer Chris Cornell (after he departed from SoundGarden (amazing music) to create the band Audioslave (amazing music). Tim Commerford's bass is so, so good.
At a live show in Phoenix during the Battle of Los Angeles tour, Zach the singer pointed to Tom the guitarist who was starting his solo in the song Bulls on Parade and said “This is my DJ”
Slipknot -duality Tool-sober NF-hope Ren-Hi Ren Tom MacDonald - no response Nova Rockefeller - hey you Project wyze- nothings what it seems Beastie boys - no sleep till Brooklyn NF - clouds Korn- freak on a leash Metallica - disposable heroes Black Sabbath - war pigs Iron maiden - hallowed be thy name Judas priest - victim of changes Pantera- walk Nf-lost
Tom Morello on guitar, he's a goddamn wizard or something. He can make it sound like anything. This particular song is about police abuse of power, racism in the police system, and the necessity of passive resistance. And this came out in 1992. Nothing has changed since.
RaTM were primarily concerned with racial and other societal and global injustices, and Zack's rage was absolutely for real. They're the only band to successfully and consistently fuse hip hop and rock in a way that fans of both genres can appreciate. Oh sure, other groups have done it well, but It was RaTM's whole sound and it's unique and enduring.
@@StaxReacts Annoyingly, I can't find the BBC live session of this track, presumably because they refused not to curse on a live broadcast of Killing in the Name, which stirred up a huge controversy because it was broadcast at prime time. But People of the Sun is my favourite RaTM track. This isn't the best rendition, just the best on UA-cam. Enjoy! (and maybe even react!). ua-cam.com/video/scyC9A6o_Ts/v-deo.htmlsi=wW_4_MyfCbP5v5D2
Totally forgot how much DX’s entrance song sounded like RATM. This was the sound they were going for with that theme song, but they used the Walmart version of the band to record it.
RATM is another GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD (yeah, there are some bands like this :) ). Next ? "Know Your Enemy", "Bullet in your head" (and the live at pinkpop 93 or 94), "Wake Up"... In fact all tracks from the first album... You can also try some tracks from "Renegades" album: hip hop songs covers by RATM... Try "Street Fighting Man", but there are also a couple worth listening.
@@StaxReacts You're welcome. And... Welcome into the rabbit hole... I'm waiting for the moment you'll dive into a complete different style but also a rabbit hole: Pink Floyd ;P... I'll be there. Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine, Pink Floyd... And some more are ready for the "rendez-vous".
H Blox were a “sound-a-like” band. If someone doesn’t want to pay to license a song for TV or commercials, they hire studio musicians to record a song that sounds like the one they want. Then they only have to pay one flat fee to the studio musicians instead of having to pay a royalty fee every time they play the real song on TV. Thats why it’s rare for wrestlers to have popular songs from big name artists as their entrance music. And if they do have music from a well known artist, it’s usually a song that’s written just for them that they’ve negotiated a rate for ahead of time (still rare though).
Oh...another fun rabbit hole to go down. It's like you're just going through my old CD case at this point. This song is about racist police & was in response to the Rodney King beating & subsequent LA riots. And yes all of their music is pretty anti-establishment themed (govt/police/military/etc)....I mean, it's in the name: "Rage Against the Machine"
Know Your Enemy. Try to watch lyric videos on your Rage journey, or pull up lyrics on your phone to follow along. It’s important. I once made the mistake of cranking Rage for the entirety of a 45 minute drive to a court date. I was so ready to burn the damn courthouse down when I got there I had to sit in the car for another 20 minutes listening to Pink Floyd to mellow out.😂
Subbed for Tool and I wish I could sub again for Rage. Literally two of my biggest musical foundations. And both with incredibly powerful and meaningful lyrics, and generational artists. Please do more!! They’re all good ❤️🔥 (With lyrics😊)
Interesting observation because I always felt they had more of a hip hop swing to their sound. Like if someone was in their car bobbing to this and you couldn't hear what it was, you'd assume it's hip-hop. Talented group of men.
I’m in my 60s this style of music we used to call headbangers it’s headbangers music.. and it’s not just in this is kind of a rock rap… try, listening to kid rock in his early years
This is in response to the Rodney King beating in 1992. Next "Rolling Down Rodeo". ❤
It's Tom Morello on guitar.
I’ll check it out 🙏🏽
The opening lyrics that makes everyone pause with a hold up moment and a did he just say what I think he said

🔥🔥🐐🐐
Down Rodeo, Fistful of Steel should be next for the Rage rabbit hole...
Doin it right so far bro. I like the genuine reacting and understanding
Thank you so much brother🙏🏽❤️
Not sure if anyone said it, but the original lyric was "Some of those that hold office are the same that burn crosses". Record execs made them change it.
Ahhhh ok🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Rage against the machine (gov institutions) says it all. This whole cd is fkn insane great. Must have in traffic, screaming fuck u I wont do what u tell me helps get it out. And everyone around you leaves u alone.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
They were supposed to start their tour in 2020 in my city El Paso Tx. but covid hit and it was canceled, and they never came and now they are going to stop touring. I was ready to buy my tickets and it just didn't happen.
🙏🏽🙏🏽‼️‼️
Time to go down the rabbit hole to the School of RATM. Your life will never be the same! Take the time to learn about everything they mention and you’ll learn more about history and politics in this country than you ever did in school. And Tom Morello’s son may pass him in the mad guitar skills, so you should check him out, too.
🙏🏽🙏🏽‼️
You asked about the band, after creative differences (Zack only wanting to do political songs), the band reformed with lead singer Chris Cornell (after he departed from SoundGarden (amazing music) to create the band Audioslave (amazing music). Tim Commerford's bass is so, so good.
🙏🏽🙏🏽‼️‼️
At a live show in Phoenix during the Battle of Los Angeles tour, Zach the singer pointed to Tom the guitarist who was starting his solo in the song Bulls on Parade and said “This is my DJ”
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Check out “Bodies”by Drowning Pool… it’s an old favorite of mine…
Betttt
The lyrics to down rodeo hit hard.
Also maggies farm.
I gotta check it out
Tom Morello is the guitarist, and he was heavily influenced by Vernon Reid from Living Color. Check out Cult Of Personality
🙏🏽💯🙏🏽

Do Bulls on Parade 🙏🏽 another Rage Against the Machine jam 🔥🔥
🙏🏽🙏🏽‼️
Rolling down rodeo next…..great reaction
"Some of those who work forces" (police) "are the same who burn crosses." (KKK)
Terrifyingly true. And more than just some.
Wow 🙏🏽
"They justify those who die, for wearing the badge they're the chosen whites"
Rage Against the Machine is light the fuse and find out, they do a great cover of Renegades of Funk with Tom Morello wicked sounds .
🔥🔥🙏🏽
Tom Morello on guitar, he's a goddamn wizard or something. He can make it sound like anything.
This particular song is about police abuse of power, racism in the police system, and the necessity of passive resistance. And this came out in 1992. Nothing has changed since.
Thank you so much
I saw them live way back in the day.
Check out Bullet in the Head or People of the Sun.
Coming soon, thank yku
RaTM were primarily concerned with racial and other societal and global injustices, and Zack's rage was absolutely for real. They're the only band to successfully and consistently fuse hip hop and rock in a way that fans of both genres can appreciate. Oh sure, other groups have done it well, but It was RaTM's whole sound and it's unique and enduring.
Thank you so much, I can definitely hear it
@@StaxReacts Annoyingly, I can't find the BBC live session of this track, presumably because they refused not to curse on a live broadcast of Killing in the Name, which stirred up a huge controversy because it was broadcast at prime time. But People of the Sun is my favourite RaTM track. This isn't the best rendition, just the best on UA-cam. Enjoy! (and maybe even react!).

Bulls on Parade should definitely be on the list of Rage songs you react to
If is for sure
Totally forgot how much DX’s entrance song sounded like RATM. This was the sound they were going for with that theme song, but they used the Walmart version of the band to record it.
Lmaooooo facts
Tom Morello is melting your face off!! 👍🏻
Without a doubt 😳
You gotta listen to he lyrics with them! Much love
I know from here on out, thank you ❤️🙏🏽
RATM is another GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD (yeah, there are some bands like this :) ).
Will do thank you so much
@@StaxReacts You're welcome.
The band that did the DX intro were called The H Blox if memory serves. They did X Pacs solo theme too I think. Very Rage esque but not Rage. Cheers!
Ahhhhhh okay thank you for clarifying
H Blox were a “sound-a-like” band. If someone doesn’t want to pay to license a song for TV or commercials, they hire studio musicians to record a song that sounds like the one they want. Then they only have to pay one flat fee to the studio musicians instead of having to pay a royalty fee every time they play the real song on TV. Thats why it’s rare for wrestlers to have popular songs from big name artists as their entrance music. And if they do have music from a well known artist, it’s usually a song that’s written just for them that they’ve negotiated a rate for ahead of time (still rare though).
You are going to love this rabbit hole❤❤❤ you should pull up the lyrics
I will for next time 🙏🏽
All of that is done with just the guitar as well
You'll have to do one for Bulls on Parade as well.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Best bass line ever
Facts
O F yeah starting on ratm dive head first down the rabbit hole every songs a goat and their lyrics are as on point today as when they came out
🙏🏽🙏🏽🔥‼️
I always thought that “those that burn crosses” was a reference to the Klan. You should listen to And The Funk Never Dies.
Betttt
Just wait till he finds out that the lead singer is now with Killer Mike in Run The Jewels.
Check out Run The Jewels - JU$T
Bettt
cant go wrong with with rage! can pic a random song and its gonna be 🔥
🙏🏽🙏🏽🔥🔥
Oh...another fun rabbit hole to go down. It's like you're just going through my old CD case at this point.
This song is about racist police & was in response to the Rodney King beating & subsequent LA riots.
And yes all of their music is pretty anti-establishment themed (govt/police/military/etc)....I mean, it's in the name: "Rage Against the Machine"
Ahhh ok thank you
Ahhh ok thank you
Know Your Enemy.
Try to watch lyric videos on your Rage journey, or pull up lyrics on your phone to follow along. It’s important.
I once made the mistake of cranking Rage for the entirety of a 45 minute drive to a court date. I was so ready to burn the damn courthouse down when I got there I had to sit in the car for another 20 minutes listening to Pink Floyd to mellow out.😂
I will for sure next time. Omfg that’s crazy lmaooooo
Your face in the solo is the only face to make 😂💯💥🎸
Factssss lol🔥🔥😳
"Roll Right" by RAGE has the best bass line. There's plenty of great RAGE songs to react to.
I’ll hear it for sure
Rage sound like the guy from the DX song but they didn't make it
The guy that sing the DX song is Chris Warren
They sound very alike
So similar, glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that
Ratm is an awesome group! Nice reaction
Thank you so much 🔥
Testify.
Bulls on Parade is another great song by them
Will bring soon
Subbed for Tool and I wish I could sub again for Rage. Literally two of my biggest musical foundations. And both with incredibly powerful and meaningful lyrics, and generational artists. Please do more!! They’re all good ❤️🔥 (With lyrics😊)
Welcome to the family 🙏🏽
Listen to C.I.A. by Zack De La Rocha, KRS One and The Last Emperor. It's from one of the Lyricist Lounge Albums back in the day.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Interesting observation because I always felt they had more of a hip hop swing to their sound. Like if someone was in their car bobbing to this and you couldn't hear what it was, you'd assume it's hip-hop. Talented group of men.
🔥🔥🙏🏽
You may want to check Sevendust, Denial is a good start. Keep going, so much more great music out there!!
Thank you so much, I will do🙏🏽
Reaction Life lesson... #NeverDoRATMWithoutTheLyrics
🙏🏽🙏🏽
I’m in my 60s this style of music we used to call headbangers it’s headbangers music.. and it’s not just in this is kind of a rock rap… try, listening to kid rock in his early years
Betttt
