Same, but I was like 13 in Tennessee. I dove into the lyrics and then the history books.

The lyrics were inspired by the police brutality suffered by Rodney King and the subsequent 1992 Los Angeles riots.
The refrain "some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses".

As an American, even with all that our country is going through I’m still proud to be from the U.S., but the only thing that truly scares me is how many Americans are afraid to face the reality of our past and in some respects our present. There are people in our nation hard at work trying to rewrite and candy coat past and present issues in our nation. Rage Against The Machine gave people a much needed hard ass slap of truth up side the head.

This was the UK Xmas number 1 in 2012 thanks to an Internet petition to stop that year's Pop Idol winner getting to the top spot, like they had for about 4 years running. Funnily enough, it never gets played when radio stations have a run down of Xmas number ones. Wonder why?!😊

Was lucky enough to see them at the Download Festival along with 111,000 other fans, after they had topped the British Singles Chart at Xmas in 2009, after a social media campaign to keep Simon Cowell's X Factor winner off the No 1 spot.
They were still amazing live, despite it being 18 years on from their debut album.
The atmosphere for their Headlining set was absolutely electric. I was there with my mum & Dad along with several family friends and we loved every minute of their show.
The ground was shaking as 111,000 people jumped in n unison and screamed the lyrics out word for word.
It was a real gift to be there and to share that experience of musical joy, which contained as relevant a social message then, as the day the songs were originally written.
The really sad thing is that the messages contained within the RATM songs are more needed and relevant today, a further 13 years later.
We need bands like RATM to spread the message that societal change is needed and to fight against corporate greed and those who abuse their power and authority.
Hoping RATM and others will continue to fight until we achieve the changes that will make society better and fairer for everyone.

Interesting ... REN and RATM are covering similar themes in their lyrics and with the passion behind the message. Bob Dylan did the same in the mid 60's . He spoke truth , but very directly. Where some artists use artistic / poetic modes to carry the message in a subtle way, all the above artists speak directly, clearly and with passion. The message carries through to the listener .
