  • We are driving our NV200 camper around Ireland. In this episode we drive through Killybegs, take a wrong turn into Donegal Abbey, meet the Travel Trolls, endure park up hell on Donegal waterfront, find a bin and loo in Belleek, explore Creevykeel tomb, Mullaghmore harbour, the Gleniff horseshoe drive, Drumcliffe cemetery to see the grave of WB Yeates before spending the night at Glencar Lough.

I admire your fortitude with those unrelenting grey skies and bad storms. They'd be enough to send me packing! The only thing I'd say about over zealous traffic wardens and lack of places to put rubbish etc is that there has been a long time negativity to camper vans by local authorities because there are Irish people who live and travel permanently in vans and who have unfortunately caused problems. However the Covid situation has seen an enormous increase in staycationing including campervan holidays which will hopefully lead to a change of attitude by local authorities and better provision of facilities for this sector of the travel market. Maybe in time for your next visit! 😁 In the meantime you're most welcome to Ireland and do enjoy your holiday.

I am sure that is the case Martin. Its a shame that governments have allowed several groups to obtain a protected status which makes it difficult to target the real problem so everyone suffers. 👍

One of my favorite instances of our trip to Ireland was when we visited Christ Church in Dublin. As we entered the gentleman at the information booth asked us in what language we would like our brochure. I told him we were from Texas, and he stated "Aaah, ya' know the Queen's English, ya' just don't speak it." A good laugh followed.

Morning both. I enjoyed this film. Feel cross for you about the whole Donegal carpark experience. How frustrating! I’ll check that video out. Glad it didn’t spoil the trip and soon forgotten. I purchased a Radar key on eBay for use of disabled loos such as the one you stopped at. Worth the £3.50 investment! I wonder when you get home if you’d consider doing a short video of how you both prep for the longer trips you do, if you haven’t done one already (equipment, food, first aid, toiletries- all and anything really!). I for one would really appreciate it. Safe onward journey and wishing you a rain free few days!

I am going to have to get one of those keys Bernie 👍. Sometimes that is the only option left as all the others are locked. It is about time for an update on what we take with us as guess what we still are taking too much stuff. Yet another first class video. I am so sorry for the crappy experience at the hands of the parking Himmlers in Donegal. You were clearly irked by it and it came across - I sincerely hope you didn't pay the fine (no need to answer that)! I find Donegal town is far too touristy and it gains huge revenues from American tourist buses - it's had an adverse effect on it. I'm very familiar with all the other places you visited in this video and have visited the grave of W.B. Yeats on numerous occasions - but never knew that I was standing there paying respects to what are most likely not his remains. It seems fitting that someone pretending to be literate has been paying tribute to bones pretending to be his! Your research is a credit to you. We took a drive to Sligo today (12th Sept) from Enniskillen and passed Glencar Lake from across the lake - the wind was actually blowing it upward!! I'm so sorry you are having such poor weather to explore this beautiful part of the country but I hope you are still having a fantastic time. Looking forward to the next one as usual.

We are back home now John but there are a few more episodes to come. We didn’t get a ticket as we were legally parked so they couldn’t give us one. I wish he had told me to take my rubbish home though instead of Carol as I am not as polite as her when shoved. The episode didn’t spoil our trip one little bit and neither did the weather really as we still have fun. We will have to return at some point to see all the stuff we missed 👍

    • @uptowndisco2

to keep thing amicable the Wardens could have simply knocked on Dans door and advise them to turn and park facing the other way , it was not like they had walked off and left the van , they were both sitting in the van at the time , I would probably have made the same mistake with the overhang on the back of my van , I wont now though , an easy mistake to make .

you were on the right track with the fishing boats in Killybegs....it's one of the largest if not the largest fishing port in Ireland. The swan on the door of the church in Drumcliif is significant too with regard to Yeats as he wrote a well known poem "the wild swans at Coole". His poetry is embedded in the area although not restricted to it. The Waterboys did an excellent musical interpretation of his poetry called "An Appointment with Mr Yeats" which is well worth checking out. Oh, and another great video!

I've read that about 70 to 80% of all fish landed in Ireland are landed in Killybegs Adrian. Dunmore East in Co Waterford is 2nd biggest but a long way behind. I'm trying to verify it now but can't at this moment. The trawlers go as far as Greenland from there. During the cold war it was reported that some of the trawlermen from the big Russian factory ships operating not far offshore would go into Killybegs on tenders for a few pints at night and nobody bothered too much. We are talking late 70's early 80's when times were very different.

Food shopping in ROI = most people do a big shop for items with long shelf life at SuperValu- Aldi, Lidl once a month ( if they live in rural area) fresh produce is either growing in their garden or bought from local stores. Very few Irish people will buy tinned meat as the local ham etc in the local store is so much healthier and tastes better. Meals are generally Fresh meat, fish, vegetables potato’s, homemade is the normal in ROI. Our children are taught from very young to eat what is dished up.
Wherever you are in ROI you can find a SuperValu or Aldi, Lidl one or more of these will be not that far away. A quick drive once every few weeks will help you get your lightweight food ( I appreciate your in a small van). You are doing great trying the local food, soda bread lasts a long time at least 10 days ( not in my house ! ) fresh, toasted, fried, potatoes cook more than you need and fry up next day ( saves gas / electric) not sure if you like fish? Mackerel is plentiful and the freshness is excellent in Ireland (tip cook outside the van- it smells but tastes amazing). Love your videos & Carole is a genius with the cooking in such a small space. 👏👍

I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant experience with the "boy racers" in Killybegs. I'm afraid it's a problem in many parts of Ireland and most unfortunate for those folk who have their permanent home next to these race tracks. Not so long ago one of these "boy racers" was accidentally killed in Belfast and at his funeral some of his friends arrived to pay tribute to him by performing "doughnuts" and other stunts much to the disgust of the deceased's family and friends. It's unfortunate that you had such dreary weather during your visit. Most of out weather comes charging in from the Atlantic and is therefore moisture-laden. Many of my friends are farmers and they have to struggle through the rain to bring in their crops.
I do hope you return and inspire others to follow. As mentioned before I extend a warm welcome to base yourselves at my home in County Down close to Strangford Lough, the largest sea water lough in these isles. It gets its name from the Viking invaders who called it "Strangford" as a derivation of "Strong Fjord" as it has a very narrow entrance from the Irish Sea when the water rushes in and out twice a day.
    Haste ye back.

Thanks for your kind offer Alan. We missed quiet a bit on this trip so we will be back to see the rest. If only we could put old heads on young shoulders that lad would still be alive. What is strange is the further South you go the less the problem of boy racers exist. I wonder why that is.

@@LifeistooshortCK I don't know the why - but I do know having driven at length all around the whole island (for work) that driveways in Donegal have a dramatically disproportionate amount of rally cars parked on them. Also Northern Ireland has a very disproportionate amount of motor cyclists (with an impressive racing heritage which I'm sure has an influence). By the way Ken, snap Alan's arm off along with his hospitality - he lives in a beautiful part of the country.

Just subscribed to your channel. Love your clips and the music, also the drone shots. Sorry about the lack of rubbish receptacles, they have been removed almost nationwide because household collection (which used to be free) is now another expensive utility bill that we have to budget for. People started dumping their household waste in outdoor bins in parks, laybys etc rather than pay for collection. It has created a massive problem for Ireland in the form of illegal dumping. Anyway, keep the videos coming and pay no attention to the few meanspirited people that you will encounter. Be safe and know that you're welcome in Ireland. Joe Dunne Kilkenny.

The van has one that can live under the main seat. Very small capacity for waste and a much bigger problem when its time to empty it. Having said that it’s the space it consumes that is the real problem in such a small van so we don’t take it. In ROI finding bins is the bigger challenge. 👍

I was at Glencar waterfall, Mullaghmore & Bundoran just a week ago. I see that you went to the same "car park" in Mullaghmore that I did. That field is very dodgy to get into and out of without wrecking your suspension! I'll know for the next time to continue on up the road a bit to the harbour area. Plenty of "on street" parking there. Having wrecked a clutch in a Mondeo in Glencoe, I'm now very wary of "off roading" :)

It's such a shame that Donegal gets such a battering even from the Irish in other counties, it's like the forgotten land. It is the last county to get any funding from the Irish Government, no wonder the facilities are lacking.
I don't condone the actions of those youths in cars, but that is a problem I have even seen here in Scotland also. Youngsters doing donuts and burnouts on public roads.
Some of the travel videos I have watched from Donegal lately have been rather negative and depressing and it angers me as I know my family and neighbours from Donegal are decent hard working people.
I now wish the Wild Atlantic Way and the NC500 here in Scotland were never marketed as tourist routes as they were much better as just coastal routes in the past with less traffic, I'm sure many of the locals feel the same.

    • @LifeistooshortCK

The problem of boy racers is widespread across the U.K. and is only one aspect of today’s antisocial behaviour. It has to be nipped in the bud just like graffiti and broken windows which takes money to police it.
The problems are caused by a tiny minority including a tiny minority of officials who have created the policies.
Everyone would benefit from eradicating the boy racer problem, especially the poor residents that live just over the trees from the car park. The Garda station must be able to hear it themselves as it is so close. I doubt it was a camper that called the Garda.
I didn’t mention it in the video but the couple from the Irish van had not had a disturbed night. They had been told to park at the opposite end from the Brits by the warden. Normally we would have picked a different spot but wanted to say hello to the Trolls.
We have always shared where we have had problems and praised places which have been great. We have to do that as others will follow in our wheels.

    • @irishrover63
      @irishrover63 4 роки тому

I can't stand youths who terrorise neighbourhoods. It all stems from a very relaxed up bringing in my opinion and should have been nipped in the bud years ago.
As for the traffic wardens, they are also taking a chance as our vehicle registrations are marked the same as yours. Wonder if I would get the same treatment if I stepped out the van with a Scottish or Irish accent?
It does look like discrimination for sure.
I did advise Danny not to pay the fine in a comment when I first saw the video.

I think ye guys are having problems most Irish people never experience. The larger service stations have toilets. Lots of people use those. But most Irish people will just pull into a hotel and use the toilets there. For example, in Donegal town, you could have walked over to the large hotels on the diamond (just five mins walk away from your van). There is a large tolerance for the public using the toilets in hotels and bars. For the waste issue just ask locally or ring the council for the nearest disposal facility. I'd be surprised if it's far. Donegal town definitely should have one. In general, the council doesn't provide these facilities everywhere in case they attract illegal dumping. Lastly, if the kids are causing havoc beside your van just call the police. That's their job. Enjoying your videos.

Interesting to know the Irish entertainment premises approach to people just walking in to use the loos. That’s frowned upon in England so we didn’t even consider that. We got by with the rubbish in the end. No storage for that in the van so we get rid little and often. Do your traffic wardens enforce the rubbish fines or was he bluffing my wife ? As for kids I had 30 years dealing with them in the job so I am pretty used to that. Not good for the towns image though. 👍

    • @seanshannon907

@@LifeistooshortCK In general there is not an issue in the larger hotels and bars using toilets. Nobody likes or uses public toilets in ROI (that I know). No need to get by with the rubbish. Phone council or ask locals. Traffic wardens are a pain everywhere. He may well enforce the rubbish fines in that area. I don't know the bye-laws. Sligo is lovely county. So enjoy.

Can't get my head around the fact that the "Traffic warden" wouldn't allow you to place your rubbish in a rubbish bin. What are you supposed to put in there? I would certainly have reported them. And for a detective to show up? It must have been a slow day in his office.

No shower or bath in our little van so we have flannel washes just like our ancestors did. We can rig a shower up at the back but I doubt we ever will unless its a really hot climate. Every now and then we book into a hotel and pamper ourselves for a night. We save an average of £25 per night wild camping so it soon mounts up and easily covers the costs of that.

Life is too short for some reason all the border counties have a ‘boy racer’ culture/problem. As you travel south you see less and less boy racers and from midlands down they are few and far between. Not sure why this is? Possibly it might be more of a thing among UK kids and not so much Irish kids?
They can really spoil your enjoyment of a place - and can be particularly upsetting if you have small kids to worry about 😕

Disgraceful what happened you and the Trveltrolls in Donegal Town. As a Motorhome owner I would like to say Ireland and indeed the UK generally is totally lacking facilities and French Aire's type overnight camping. The growth of this type of holiday has been massive, especially this year, and Local Councils will need to plan for this and increase on the already tiny amount of Aire's.

    • @LifeistooshortCK
      @LifeistooshortCK  4 роки тому

I agree with you on the need for councils to embrace the community rather than going to war with them. There is good money to be made for the right facilities and once covid recedes lots of spending to be had in the towns which also benefits the locals 👍
