- NO one warned me about this before I started camping in a roof top tent. I thought I would share this info with the hopes of helping anyone who is looking to buy a rooftop tent. Don't get me wrong, I still LOVE my roof top tent. This is just a small annoyance :)

This is why you put your rooftop tent on a trailer. That way you have the best of both worlds. The quick setup and security of being off the ground, and the ability to go and explore without packing up your camp
That for sure. If you are living out of a vehicle with or without a rtt you still have to pack up. You are so right, besides what you said it also allows to carry more needed things like food and water.
That's exactly what i'm doing. I bought a small atv trailer 5'x8' and I'm modifying it. I reinforced the frame, removed the fenders and fabricated new ones to accommodate bigger tires, did a spring over flip, and I'm building the upright frame for the tent. With 22" between ground and the frame, it has plenty of clearance for off road. I also have leveling jacks on rear corners, all led lights, and all wiring ran through conduit.
RTT is basically for someone that's constantly on the move from one place to another. You set it up at the end of the day to sleep with all your essentials to avoid making trip out of your campsite. It's not for everybody and does requires planning ahead of time.

This is exactly what we do, with a cheap cooler full of rocks sitting outside to boot! Works great!

laws might be different for different countries, but why worry about losing your spot? rooftop tents give the advantage of pulling up anywhere and camping
In the US, many places have designated campsites, even for "dispersed camping," so if you leave you can easily be fucked, especially if you have one of the only nice sites available. Here in the US, the powers that be, even with millions of acres, cram people into tiny areas to camp. The National Forest Service, especially, is filled with the dumbest people imaginable.
I'm kind of surprised you needed someone to tell you this before you bought a roof top tent.

It seems like it would be obvious, but sometimes it's the obvious things (like being used to your tent holding your camp site) that don't occur to you.

Thanks for sharing. We found that using a very small cheap $30 Walmart tent and a couple 15 year old crappy folding camping chairs that our kids used to use always holds our spot for us when we leave our spot.

It also is one of the benefits as you always have your home with you. I did most of my camping before the RTT was around and we used a ground tent some pipe and tarp, the new RTT are a heck of a lot nicer and look a lot better. Thank you for your video, it may be an obvious thing but when you are doing this for the first time the obvious things are what you miss at first. i have a small 2 person Walmart tent for 35 dlls that i set up on my camping site so when i pack my roof tent to go somewhere the small tent serves to keep our camping site
I just spent an hour watching videos of different rooftop tents, I have always loved the idea of doing this, little boy treehouse kind of thing. I am now annoyed that I didn't see the obvious, thanks for pointing this out. I think it was possible that I would have bought one of these and then stood in a campground thinking what the hell, I can't use my truck without breaking down the bloody tent, so again thanks.

Agreed. Other people in the comments are saying this is pretty obvious, but honestly I would not have thought about this… So thank you for making the video!
The simple solution is you just mount the rooftop tent + 270 degree awning to a 4x4 trailer, leave the trailer in your campsite...then you can use the truck without breaking down camp...this doesn't work in remote single-camping areas of course, you may return to find a vacant spot with a missing trailer. But camping with a group, one person remains in camp to guard your belongings.
Pros to a rooftop tent:
1. Can go to more secluded areas and not worry about ground type
2. Less if an issue of bugs, insects, animals
3. Easier to setup
No need for air mattress since usually comes with a pad.
4. Less space in trunk
The argument that you don't want to leave a table/chair at camp ground to reserve spot is pretty dumb as you'd still have to leave your tent at minimum.
I agree. I've even left a cheap ground tarp in my spot with a couple of ALDI folding chairs and have never had my spot taken.
You could even take the rooftop tent off and put it on the ground if you truly love a spot.
I can't agree,, the beauty of a RTT is that you can drive around and then find a spot where there is nobody, my truck is customised with a heat exchanger and shower with 120l of water and a 250w panel that feeds a 200amp/hour battery and 1500w inverter to run a fridge freezer , tv and charge batteries for my fishing kontiki.I really love my RTT.

I think the downside for these folks is losing a good spot. I don't think the time lost is really an issue.

@@MountainManGuy It is hard to believe that as bid as this country is that it is necessary to "save a spot". Also perhaps little better planning would prevent moving for supplies, etc. 2 light scooters might be a solution.
Get a cheap popup tent.
And put it up.
Empty.
Saves your spot.
Problem solved.

Great point. While camping in the middle of nowhere in Montana, deep in the woods using a lifted AWD to get there, I've had my camping area ransacked when I drove out to target shoot, about 2 miles away... All within a matter of 2 hours at most. Obviously, I was pissed, but luckily we took many/most of our more expensive items with us to shoot. The crazy thing is there were absolutely no signs of anyone being around us for quite some ways in all directions... But it still happened unfortunately.
I kinda like the idea of being able to have everything with you at all times.

Why would you need to constantly drive away from your camp site? Your problem is your moving all the time, not the rooftop tent.
Thank you, you have helped me make a decision to get the utility trailer and mount the roof camper on top of it and also get the additional enclosed tentage that gives you a additional room on the ground. The I was looking at locks everything up and it shows how to make it so no one can steal it. Anymore you almost have to setup booby traps to protect your property.

really? you didnt come across this in any of your research? I bought my RTT 3 years ago and found this aspect in many pro/con comparisons. I don't normally return to the same camping spot so it works really well for me. Like others have said....seems like you need a different style of tent.
I have an RTT, and when i was tent camping, I had never left anything behind to go explore. Extra five minutes is nothing compared to the entired 24 hours in a day.

It’s a good point that might be obvious to some and a sudden realisation for others... it’s worth thinking about whether you plan to set-up a base camp and hang out, or you need to drive every day (and might even lose your spot at the campsite!). Then you can decide if you need the comfort of a rtt, or if you might need a cheap cubicle or ground tent to either use or just hold your spot. Some rtt’s are really so quick to set up that the whole issue is diminished (like clam shell style hard tops). And if you’re also packing away tailgate kitchen, two chairs, a fridge, a grill... then you’ll be breaking camp every time you go get a Starbucks anyway. I take a small tent too. We can use it if we like, maybe store folding chairs and tables out of the rain, and leave it there if we drive off. The ikamper skycamp 2.0 folds down in about 60 seconds.

After losing some amazing camping spots and also dealing with taking the tent down every time we want to drive around, we're building an off-road trailer for our rtt!

What part of Idaho? I've experienced trouble with this in Colorado but when I am in Idaho I feel like this is not an issue.

probassfishing a decent trailer setup will follow you just about everywhere your rig is capable of going.
Thx for your nice video. If that's your worst thing, finding a spot, I think I can live with it. My (narrow) experience say, start early, stop early. A small bragging. In,Sweden, where I live, it's a thing named "allamanratten", traditions of camping almost everywhere but with respect. Stay away from houses, stay just one night in new ce place, leave it our site probably cleaner and nicer then you arrived. Se yourself as a guest in nature. Skip bonfire's, campfire is ok, just pick firewood around you (not any living things) I wish you all safe and nice and safe tours. Oh yeah, you can drink running water almost everywhere, use some sense will be enough. X-a: this is not written in any way, just a good tradition. Anything written down will tease people to nitpick and find loopholes. Have many relaxing and nice nice trips.
Each to his own. I love my RRT for camping/hikes cos I have a very roomy safe space in a few minutes with no tent pegs to trip over and don't need to go popping into town all the time. My vehicle is a small 3dr go-anywhere Suzi so cabin space is at a premium.

Good thought. I found this out while driving a rented Winnebago with a kid - had an emergency and had to unhook to get across town. What a pain. From then on, we went with a towable camper. Hadn't really thought about it tent camping.

Agreed, my friend bought one for his Tacoma. It was nice being off the ground and comfy but take down/setup Everytime we left was a pain, never popped the window things out, oh and putting the leather cover back on Everytime was a pain. I am about to buy myself a SUV tent so I can camp out of my CR-V, the Napier one. Can't wait

Ahhh, I was just thinking about that part. But more around just the packing up moving part. I would never leave anything expecting it to be there when I got back. But if you are at a paid site (provincial/national park) and need to take off for a bit, you still need to pack up. No base camp, so to speak. Thanks!

For the price of your roof top tent the tepui you could have got a trailer and left that roof top tents are for people that travel from place to place every time a new place there not for people that want to stay in the same place
Four years in a roof top tent now same tent
For me, not having a fly over the thing while you are setting up is the worst. In the rain, you take the wetness into the tent, and there is no way not to track it up, if you have to go from an unflyed area to the tent itself. The remedy would be to mount fly eyehooks onto the top of the hardshell case, maybe string a fly through there before popping it up, then staking it so that you create a dry space underneath to crawl in and out. The moving issue, I think you hit the right thing: a cheap pop-up tent, staked out, with a note inside, "THiS IS OUR SPOT!!! WE ARE COMING RIGHT BACK" and a phone number even, would deter any nice people. Thanks for the video. Look forward to more.

I was thinking about a rtt but in the end we converted out landrover defender 110 van into a camper. Means it’s a quick pack up and move.

If you don't wan't to lose the camping spot just buy small ground cheap tent for one person in Walmart and leave it on the spot if needed.
But if you leave your tent unattended, don't you risk losing your stuff?
I bought an expensive soft sided RTT ,it's mounted on a roof rack on top of a lifted Tacoma and what a pain in the ass . I carry a 5ft step ladder just to make it easier to close, you have to climb up on top of the tent to close it and then try and force all the canvas and then struggle to put the bag on . Last time i used it i got so pissed off i swore i will never use it again so i have gone back to a swag and ground tent so much easier .

Allie, knowing what you know now about rooftop tents is there anything you would change about your setup like truck? Or maybe a different brand tent? How do you keep it cool I live in south fl so you know it’s hot down here lol
It isn't very fun in FL LOL. The bugs and heat are next level!
I'd like a truck bed rack for the tent.
In S FL you will need a fly over the top of the tent, with ~2" of airspace between tent roof and underside of the fly. The fly will work best if light-colored, lightweight nylon. Makes several degrees of difference. I would also hang battery-powered fans in the tent. I have lived, camped and canoed in S FL for many years. Your tent may also need no see um screens.
Thanks for making this video! I hunt too and have thought about getting an RTT, but I like to make 1 camp and drive my truck to different high spots to glass. Your post convinced me to just stick with my wall tent, cuz packing up the tent every time I want to go out to scout would be a real downer.

Losing your spot is a fair point, but the setup time doesn't make much sense to me, TBH. It is literally the quickest thing I have done while camping since I bought one. It takes me longer to setup to cook. I would say a more understated drawback is you have to have a level parking spot to fully make use of the thing. I have remedied this with two jackstands on pads that I use with a 4 foot level to make sure we aren't sliding around in the night. This is more of a pain in the ass if you aren't in groomed campgrounds with leveled lots. Good to get more input on pros and cons of roof tents though, thanks for the video!

What's better than a rtt or a camper shell? GO FAST CAMPERS. Look it up. They're an amazing camper that solve almost all of the complaints of a rtt and a camper shell. Great video!

They should make one with legs, that way you could run to town and when you get back, just drive under it and hook it back to the rack..

You run the risk of someone driving off with your RTT. Just saying.

Doesn't fit your style of camping... if you were to camp at a "normal" campground... you know where you reserve spots, this wouldn't be an issue.
yeah, but if you camp at the suburbs of the wilderness, IE normal campgrounds with reserved spots, is it really camping? I mean it serves its purpose like if you want to camp while going on a road trip and need to be sure you have a spot, or at the grand canyon or something. But most of the time, the reason many of us go camping is to get as far away from other people and into nature as possible.

Literally takes 5 minutes at most to set up or take down. Not a big deal. I'd spend double that and then some on some ground tents.
Hell it takes me 35+ minutes to set up my hot stove tipi tent
If you’re moving around, isn’t the problem of losing the spot a potential problem regardless of whether or not you have a rooftop tent? Just bring a cheap spare to hold your spot like Allie said. If you don’t wanna do this then you’re screwed with or without the tent. Great video though....now I know to bring a just in case spare ✌🏽

I’d sell the tent and put a topper on the truck. More dry gear storage and less set up take down time. RTT are fun in theory, less fun in practicality.

I say just be cognizant of where and when you're camping. If you are going into the sticks or just one night in each spot epic road trip style, RTT FTW. If you are camping in an established campground for multiple nights, then just use a ground tent. Seems like it's a different tool for different jobs. Plan your trip accordingly.

We take a floor tent for multi day camping....
We use the rooftop for one night stays, or for camping if we don't plan to move the Jeep. I know others who do the same.

If you have to stop camping constantly to head back into town are you even camping?
So what is the advantage of these tents? They costs more, less portability, more weight, less options, less areas you can travel to and use than a regular tent. Top it off with they cost 10x that of a decent tent. Is this just a novelty to have or is there some real benefit?
There are some benefits, however it does come at a high price tag.
Opening the windows IS overrated. I think the RTT is still worth it.

I might be wrong but the point of a roof top tent on your outlander vehicle is that you can park and camp anywhere your truck can get too. Soooo whats the real con here? BTW new to your channel and your smile is beautiful!

Come on, that’s not a problem. You leave your screen or wall kitchen tent, a couple lawns chairs, camp stove, etc. in your site. Ya fold the roof top closed and off ya go for the day. Another option, you mount the roof top tent on a n inexpensive little utility trailer (that also carries much of your kit), then you leave the tent and cargo trailer setup in your site as long as you want. This also allows for carrying bikes, kayaks etc on top of the vehicle. There are +/-, trade offs to every situation, half the fun is finding and testing solutions that work best for you.
Curious as to why you mounted on your cab and not on the bed? Interesting setup. :)

I'm building a RTT on top of a Kayak Trailer, so I can leave the trailer IN my spot. That was the biggest reason for using the trailer, vs on my vehicle.

A canopy for your pickup might suite you better. I would much rather leave a gazebo/old cheap pop-up tent on the spot than my expensive tent with everything in it. Or get a couple of bikes on the back of the pickup! :)
You mean a camper shell, right? A canopy is a cloth like covering that goes over your bed in your house. Think kings and queens.
@@travelinman482 Yes, if that's what you call it where you are from :) I have never heard it called that, always truck top canopy (canopy for short) or hard top/shell. If you ask for a camper shell here you'd get something that turns the pickup into a motorhome or that's got a build-in tent - think Ursa Minor J30
Seems like loosing your spot would happen if you were ground tent camping if you were not comfortable leaving your stuff behind.

Roof top tents are for bivouac, not to camp in same spot every day. Or Only to hike around this spot.
I would throw a crappy tent on the ground as my normal spot not just to mark my spot. 😅I will still hold onto my dignity

Roof top tents are horrible because you cannot leave your tent behind to reserve your spot! A solution is to bring an extra cheepo ground tent that you can leave behind to reserve your spot but that’s not really a solution if your are worried about leaving your tent behind to save your spot. 🤣😂🤣
Bring more supplies so that you can stay longer!!!
You should try Red Roof Inn. Inexpensive, no setup, no takedown, and you don’t have to mark your spot.

Rooftop tents are great for people on the move, not so great for Campers who want to stay and enjoy the area.
Actually that's a plus for rooftop tents cause you can camp where no ground tent could... like middle of a shallow river lol...

Thy set up fast n take down there great for hunting survival etc a camper you need pay for storage which is $600 a year you need buy insurance and you need to winterize it every year that's $100 there more hassle
